Title: Should NBA enforce traveling and palming rules more consistently
Post by: Ogaju on April 19, 2018, 07:39:34 PM
or do think it would make the game less entertaining? Is the euro-step a legit basketball move, or is it a traveling violation? If it is a violation, should it be enforced as a violation more effectively?

Yes, The rules should be enforced. Letting these things go is another thing that makes it so hard to compare eras in basketball. Cousey had to dribble with his hand on top of the ball and was amazing.

I think there are things they could and should tighten up that wouldn't kill the flow of the game.

When someone like Harden develops a move that is obviously a travel, don't let him get away with doing that move. It's one thing to let players slide on fast breaks and the like, but something like what Harden does on his step back does bother me.

You gotta remember that we as fans have a birds eye view of the action. Refs dont. We have the benefit of multiple replays, free frame, the ability to zoom in on an inch of court, ect. A lot of the stuff fans complain about are very, very difficult to enforce in life NBA game action. Refs have to make a split second call, often without a perfect view. In some cases trying to enforce every NBA rule to the letter of the law is simply impossible. I'm fine with the way NBA rules are now, I think all things considered refs do a pretty good job.

No, the game is more entertaining the way it is.

We were talking today at work how badly Harden travels, especially his "take a giant step backwards, plant both feet and shoot" motion. I can't believe it doesn't get called.

But I've given up on lay-ups being called for travelling. that ship sailed a looooong time ago

It's frightening how travelling is becoming widespread. In a league I play in they're testing out this new interpretation of travelling where, if you catch the ball while you're moving, you can take 3 steps and shoot. Furthermore, if you pick up your dribble you can take 3 steps off of that.

Insanity

I am okay with how the game is played, I just want to make sure that these sliding rules apply to all players and not just superstars. Obviously this applies to fouls, as well.

All rules should be enforced, but I'm fine with the gray area and bang/bang type calls being ruled not infractions.

the bigger problem is the NBAs selective enforcement.  If we’re gonna enforce rules that’s great as long as they’re enforced for everybody....and not just for a certain game

All that being said, to answer the question.   I’m in favor of enforcing traveling.....not so much for enforcing palming

Traveling should indeed be much better enforced. Palming, I don't mind much. With palming there's less science to it to get it right consistently. But traveling is quite clear, and too many players get away with it, and it makes zero sense to keep allowing.
