Don't look now, but the Lakers are only 5 games back of the 8-seed out west, which would mean a 0% chance of a top-5 pick in this years draft.
The three teams that stand between them and the playoffs are The Pelicans sans Boogie, The Clippers sans Blake, and The Jazz sans anyone not named Gobert. The Lakers really seem to be hitting their stride, and I think it's at least more probable at this point that they make the playoffs than it is that they slide back 5 games and overtake that 5th-from-the-bottom spot in the league.
All that is to say, looks like we need to close the book on Bagley, Doncic, Ayton, Bamba, Porter, and Young and start looking ahead to RJ Barrett, Bol Bol, and Cam Reddish.
-
If we can’t get the pick I’ll be rooting for the Lakers to make the playoffs. We don’t need the Sixers getting a lottery pick.
-
I think they will take a bit hit by losing Nance and Clarkson. Clarkson particularly was huge for them in their wins. I just don't see IT off the bench having much of a positive impact for them the rest of this season.
-
don't look now, but the lakers are only 5 games back of the #5 spot in the 2018 draft which would mean a 25.% per cent chance at a top 3 pick.
see? it works two ways. ;D

Having IT there will make that at least somewhat bearable

That includes a 7.6% chance of it being the #1 pick which would mean the Sixers keep it.
See. Every silver lining has a touch of grey. ;D

Yeah, but in that scenario, the Lakers will have given up a #1 pick. That would be crushing to the Laker fan base. Well, that is unless they get Lebron....
-
Um we still have our own 1st, which has interesting prospects in that range. I really want Mitchell Robinson.

The Lakers don’t get the pick no matter what. It’s Philly or us.

Me too. Doubt he’s available by then though.

What can we possibly get with our own 1st? Another Nader? I don't want another Nader nor do I want the one we have. Let's close the book on this draft because the Lakers are sticking it to us.

Nader was the 58th pick in the draft. Our 1st will be between 27-29. It’s not the same thing.

Right. The correct guy to lament is JaJuan Johnson.

The problem with possibly having 4 picks in next year's draft is that it looks like it may be one of the worst ever. There may be a couple of good athletes at the top but after that.....oy! Makes me now wish that Bagley Jr. had stayed in HS this year.

To this day I don’t know why JaJuan Johnson failed so badly. He was the guy I wanted heading into the draft (behind Faried, who went earlier) and I was so excited when we got him. I’d pick him again tomorrow in a do-over and just hope it turned out better. A projected stretch 4/5 who blocked more shots than he committed fouls, college senior, major conference Player of the Year, 6’10” with a 7’2” wingspan, and one of the best verticals in the draft. He had the size and athleticism combined with terrific on-court results against the top college competition.
I will always lament JaJuan Johnson, and I will never understand why he flamed out so quickly.

Don't understand why people lament the late 1st picks that don't make it. The likelihood of late 1sts ending up a back bencher or worse is quite high. I lament Ainge taking Olynyk over Giannis. Or you could lament taking Young. Capella would look awfully nice in green.

And E'Twaun Moore is still in the league making over 8.5 mil the next couple of years. Who would have predicted their respective paths?

I really liked Moore also, and complained when the Lee sign-and-trade was made that he was included as salary-filler. (I hated that Lee trade — Moore, 3 seconds, Johnson, all for someone we paid another second to get rid of 18 months later. Should have just given Moore a shot.)

he played two years in my hometown and I've seen him play a lot; my guess is that has two limits he can't overcome:
1) he couldn't fill a role on defense (too slow for 4, too skinny for 5)
2) he's very good on the offensive side only if he's the focus of the offense and if he's free to shoot everything he wants to.
btw he has also added a nice 3-pt shoot and here in Europe he's simply unstoppable if he goes on fire;
-
It's been time for a while to close the books. Having said that, the history of the 27th pick (where we are now) is a pretty favorable one:
2017: Kyle Kuzma
2016: Pascal Siakam
2015: Larry Nance Jr
2014: Bogdan Bogdanovic
2013: Rudy Gobert
See? It's all part of DA's plan. :)

Thanks for the update. I always knew he had that 3-point shot in him. He was a good defender in college, but I guess that didn’t translate.

It would take a miracle to get the Lakers' pick at this point but SAC really has nothing, they are built around Zach Randolph. I am not too worried about the projections on the 2019 draft. There will be some good players or the pick may help with a trade.
It is unbelievable that we got Tatum and this Pick for Fultz.

Late 1st round pick and early 2nd round picks are very important for luxury cap strapped teams. These are cheap cost controlled players and landing even lower end rotational players with these picks really helps build a roster.
This draft may yield a few long shot higher ceiling bigs in the late first.
I would be happy if the Cs took a shot on any of the following with their own pick
Jontay Porter
Mitch Robinson
Brandon McCoy
Daniel Gaffod
Chimezie Metu
Their will also be a healthy crop of low ceiling rotation type players who could be plug in 10th-15th man type guys capable of contributing in case of injury. (look at Semi this year)
Bates-Diop big wing
Milton combo guard
Grayson Allen combo guard
Jevon Carter defensive point
Allonzo Tier scoring guard
Devonte Graham pure point
Vince Edwards combo forward
Mykhailiuk shooting wing
-
Like to see us get Mitchell Robinson dude was a top 10 player coming out of high school..he's around 6-11...

Bol Bol in 2019 here we come!

I will lament taking a late 1st round pick this year, when we could have gotten one of the better players in the league this year-----Tyreke Evans------and signed him to a relatively cheap contract after the season! Instead Danny will pick some long, long shot to even make the team or G League.
-
Bol Bol in 2019 here we come!
I agree. I'm thinking that they're ok with young guard/forward depth. Once Hayward returns, our final need is another talented big. Hopefully one that can bang down low, but also hit an open shot. Ayton, Bamba, and Bol look like the best opportunities for the Celtics.
Danny still has that valuable LAL/SAC pick, and the Memphis pick is looking increasingly interesting. The LAC pick might become a 2nd rounder, but likely a top 40 player. My guess is that Danny can use these 3 picks plus any number of Celtics 1st rounders to get one more top 5 pick over the next couple of years.

Really like to get Zion Williamson next year

Really like to get Zion Williamson next year
I think he look's like Jaylen Brown but thicker. I think they have enough young talent at the swing position, but he might be good enough to justify that pick. I'm sure they would be psyched to have the opportunity to draft this guy. If he continues on this hype train, teams are going to be clawing at the bit to draft him. That's when you make the trade for Anthony Davis or another top 10 player.

Thicker is the understatement of the year. However I will agree with you he plays a similar style to freshman year Jaylen Brown. However he is roughly 50lbs heavier.
Zion is going to be fascinating to watch in college. Assuming Bagley and Carter declare for the NBA there will be a clear path to Zion playing center in college at only around 6'7. Duke should have a very perimeter orientated team which should prevent teams from totally clogging the paint on Zion. This is where his decision to go to Duke may really pay off on the court.

Looks thicker than Smith as well. His shooting ability will prob dictate his draft position. Decent shooter? Top 3 pick all day.

Nightmare draft scenario:
Lakers finish 6th.
Lebron signs as FA with Sacramento.

Not sure he is destined for success, but you have to feel for the kid. His draft stock can only plummet since he is not playing at all this year. Perhaps he is a buy low candidate - I am sure Danny and Brad will do their due diligence.

Bol Bol in 2019 here we come!
well, even without a top pick in 2018, things look like fun in 2019.
let's all remember that the celtics will have the following 2019 first round picks, assuming the lakers's pick does not convey:
better of SAC/PHI (top 1 protected)
MEM (top 8 protected)
LAC (top 14 protected)
BOS
given ainge's ability to wheel and deal, i think the celtics will have a good pick in either 2018 or 2019.
-
Does anybody think that perhaps with the NCAA FBI scandal they will allow HS seniors to enter the nba draft starting 2019. That could be HUGE for the Cs.
