Title: My Hayward-like Injury
Post by: tarheelsxxiii on December 05, 2017, 03:04:32 PM
Hi all.  I had a nasty injury on Sat. a.m. that seems very similar to Hayward's.  Thought I'd share in case any one is interested and b/c I can't really do much else right now.

I was undercut in the air and came down hard and awkwardly on my right (dominant) arm.  Immediately knew something was wrong, and once glance was almost enough to make me pass out.

I had a clean, complete break of my radius, near-complete break of ulna, and dislocated wrist.  My wrist had flipped upside down and generally just hanging from my arm like Hayward's ankle.  I've honestly never experienced so much pain.  Like Hayward, some of the discomfort subsided after they shifted the bones and wrist into a semi normal state.

They performed surgery yesterday, inserting pins to attempt to realign the bones.  Sounds like it's going to be a very long rode to recovery.  It's scary to think my right arm may always give me issues b/c I love basketball, and the majority of my woek involves typing.  Can't imagine how Gordon must be feeling given the importance his phyical health has on his career.  Thus far, the psychological components (e.g., fear) are just as bad as the physical pain.  Hope he's well on his way to a healthy recovery.

TP and man that is awful.  I really hope you have a speedy recovery.  People getting undercut in pick up and rec league is unconscionable, the games are just not important enough to get people hurt like this.

I wish you a speedy recovery and I hope that you are back to playing the game you love soon.  You will be back and better than ever my friend!

I have broken both arms, my right collarbone, my left ring finger, and my right pinky(and then re-broke it) for a grand total of 6 arm/hand/finder injuries.

Fun fact: when I broke my pinky in a game, I scored 22 points in the second half! Thank God I'm a lefty!

Mentally it can be tough, but remember that the bone is no more or less likely to break once it heals.  Just thinking about this and saying this to myself over and over got me through the mental apprehension of playing after the injuries.

One piece of advice is to make sure it is healed before you play.  I missed half of my senior year because I re-broke my pinky by not waiting it to heal properly.

It stinks that someone undercut you.  I always hate hard fouls in pick-up games and sometimes I just stop playing if it happens more than once in one day.  I grew up playing outside in the projects so as you can imagine, this was an issue at many courts around my neighborhood.  It's just not worth it and honestly gets me so angry.

Last note, I was supposed to play basketball the day after Gordon's injury.  I felt sick to my stomach afterwards and texted my buddies that I was not going to play.  Injuries like that freak me out.  I actually witnessed a similar injury in person at my high school last year.  It was a practice.  Two players dove for the ball, and one landed on the other's leg and snapped it.  His foot was bent exactly like Hayward and he was screaming "am I gonna die, coach!"  He was freaking out and I felt so bad for the kid because the basketball season was 3 days away.

Bottom line, injuries suck and we are all rooting for you buddy!

That sucks man. Sounds like it was pretty brutal. Hope you get back to 100%.

BTW, as long as we're talking about Hayward-like injuries, I suffered a high ankle sprain playing basketball literally the day after Hayward's injury. Recovery has been super annoying.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Any tendon or ligament damage? Because the good news for breaks is although they suck, bones tend to heal rather well if it's a clean break and if it's an area that gets good blood supply.

Ugh man.  Best thoughts for healing and a full recovery.  I can’t imagine.

And seriously, who undercuts in a pickup game?

The arms and collarbone was mostly bad luck when I was younger.

The fingers were also weird injuries.  The pinky got broken off of a deflection that I tried to catch.  The ring finger was broken because I had my arm/hands extended while a 250 pounder tried posting me up aggressively.

As I said in a previous thread, tarheels, I wish you all the best toward a speedy and complete recovery. Had no idea it was from such a bush league type move as an undercut on the local courts. That ain't cool.
