Game Notes
The Celtics come off of their 3 game home stand to take a quick trip to Brooklyn to face the Nets.  The Celtics can thank the Nets for their quick rebuild in that the Celtics could win and bring in good players as the Nets were tanking for for the Celtics' lottery picks.  The final Nets pick is now in the hands of the Cavaliers by virtue of the Kyrie Irving trade.  But I can imagine that the Nets would love to pay the Celtics back for all those lottery picks that they didn't get.

The Celtics are 6-1 on the road and have won a league best 12 straight games.   The Nets aren't the worst team in the league that they were when the Celtics received their last two draft picks. They are crawling back to respectability once again.  They are 3-2 at home and are looking to get back in the win column after losing their last game.

The  Nets lost more than just the game, they lost their best player, point guard D'Angelo Russell, who was averaging 20.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.7 assists.  He left their last game with a knee contusion and has been ruled out for this game.  They will also be without Jeremy Lin who, like Gordon Hayward suffered a devastating injury early on and is out for the season.  Jarrett Allen is day to day with a foot injury, but he was able to participate fully in Monday's practice so will likely play.

Kyrie Irving missed the game against the Raptors after suffering a facial fracture when Aron Baynes caught him with an elbow against the Hornets.  He went through shoot around and has said that he expects to play vs the Nets.    He has been fitted with a face mask and we are about to be treated to masked Kyrie, who has become somewhat of a phenomenon on Instagram and Twitter.  Gordon Hayward also remains out with the ankle injury.

I have included the starting lineup with Horford at power forward and Aron Baynes at Center to match up with Mozgov and Marcus Morris off the bench.   However, as we have already seen this season it's hard to predict who Brad will go with in the starting lineup.  I've also included the Nets' starters from their game notes.

Key Matchups
(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1628369.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/201960.png)
Jayson Tatum vs DeMarre Carroll
Carroll is the second highest scorer on the Nets now that both Lin and D'Angelo are out.  He is averaging 13.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal in his last game vs the Jazz.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/201143.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1626178.png)
Al Horford vs Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
Hollis-Jefferson is averaging 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.  In his last game, against the Jazz, he had 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.  He is also one of the better defenders on the team.  Al will need to make him work on both ends of the court.

Honorable Mention
Daniel Theis vs Tyler Zeller
This should be an interesting matchup between a former Celtics big man and a current Celtics big man.  Zeller is averaging 9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 15.8 minutes off the bench while Theis is averaging 4.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 14.2 minutes per game.

Keys to the Game

Defense - The Celtics have been playing incredible defense and it isn't a stretch to say that it is their defense that has been responsible for most of their 12 straight wins.  Their defense will be tested against the Nets, who are averaging 110.6 points per game (4th).  The Celtics are averaging just 102.2 points per game and so in order to win they are going to have to continue to make defense their priority and slow down the Nets' 4th ranked offense.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to be the more aggressive team in going after loose balls, rebounds, 50/50 balls, and in going to the basket.  They also have to be aggressive on defense.  They have to be the team that wants it more and they have to play that way for 48 minutes.  They can't let themselves play with less than 100% effort because they are playing the Nets.  They have to be the team that plays harder.

Rebound - The Celtics need the ball in order to score.  They need to rebound on the offensive end to give themselves extra possessions and to keep the Nets from getting fast break points.  They also need to rebound on the defensive end to keep the Nets from getting second chance points.  The Celtics are averaging 47.5 rebounds per game compared to 45.5 for the Nets.  They need to continue to crash the boards as a team.

Take Care of the Ball
- The Celtics have to stay focused and take care of the ball.  They  have to value every possession and make good passes and find the open man for the best open shots.  They can't get sloppy and give the Nets extra chances by allowing them to steal the ball.  The Nets are averaging 17.2 points off turnovers and so the Celtics need to limit their turnovers to keep them from getting extra points from them.

X-Factors
Trap Game -  The Celtics have won 12 straight games and at the top of the league while the Nets are below .500 and fighting for every win.  Both teams are missing a key player for the season and both may be missing a star point guard.   But the Celtics can't take this team for granted because they are capable of pulling out a win if the Celtics let down their guard against them.

Road Team/Home Team -  The Celtics are back on the road after three home games.  They have to ignore all the distractions that come from playing on the road and in a hostile arena and focus on the task at hand of playing hard and focused and getting a win.  The Nets are back home after a 5 game road trip and the first game at home after a road trip is always a tough one.  Hopefully we see the best of the Celtics and the worst of the Nets.

Masked Kyrie
- Needless to say, if Kyrie can play it will make it a lot easier for the Celtics.  He participated fully in the shoot around and is expected to start.  If the past is any indication, this should be fun.  Kyrie has worn a mask twice in his career so far, once for a broken jaw and once for a broken nose.  He averaged 24.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 2.1 steals over 25 games in the mask.  He shot 46.4% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc.  He also scored 40 or more twice over that time.

Not sure about general stats, but he performs well in New York when he dons the mask. The 41 point game comes to mind

Might be yet another advantage of having a young team. They don't really get trap games yet. They just know they have to play hard and prove themselves every game.

I think that does play a part in it.  with so many young players looking to prove they should get/keep their playing time, they seem to be less likely than vets to just go through the motions and overlook the weaker teams on the schedule.

would really like to see them get off to a good start on offense tonight for a change

Baynes is a monster in the middle on D.  How long under contract for -- just this year, right?  How much to keep him?  Need him.

WE NEED BAYNES NEXT YEAR. he is a starter.

What a terrible quarter.  It's amazing how we've been able to sustain a win streak despite consistently poor offensive play from our bench unit, including when they're mixed in with starters.  We need to find a way to produce when Al is resting.

Our offensive rhythm always dies when he goes out.  Now we can't get back into it.  We have 5 points 8 minutes of play this quarter.

2-8, again.  We will get his 1 good quarter hopefully in the 4th.  But this habit really has to stop.

Al saves him from a turnover.  You've now got a 3.5 min drought with an "elite scorer" and "franchise player."   That's pretty incredible.  Now they're running PnR with Smart-Al late in the shotclock, and Al takes a horrible shot.

But hey... that's not happening.  Fake news.

Nope, and the worst part is that he isn't even hustling to the loose balls. On two occasions on the defensive end, there was a loose ball (horribly missed lay-up on Baynes and another that bounced right in front of him) that he easily could have gotten, but Nets players got to it first and they hit 3s on both occasions. The obvious goal-tend was pretty dumb, too. If Smart isn't hustling, I am not sure what he offers.

Rozier is awful tonight, too. If just one of them shows up in the 2nd half, we should be good to go - not too much to ask.

Yeah, I really don't understand it either. I think with Brad going bigger with two of Al, Baynes, and Theis out there at a time tonight it has hurt his playing time, but that doesn't really explain why he's played so little in most of the other games.

Yes Morris is on a minutes limit still, he's stated it annoys him and disrupts his rhythm.

Lots of Kyrie iso tonight that I'm not a fan of, but it also seems like we're just standing around watching him. Reminiscent of last year with our guys standing around watching IT make plays for us. That's not how we've won 12 straight.

Hmm, are we tired or what? Lots of loose balls that we're just not getting to or even looking like we're wanting to get to.

It kind of makes me wonder if a) this streak has taken a physical and emotional toll on us, or b) we just simply didn't get up for this game due to it being Brooklyn.

I agree. I think that's why Stevens and Ainge have been so careful bringing him back slowly, they know he's critical for the playoffs. He's like a mini Rasheed Wallace in his prime.

Similar to our team a couple years back (and unlike last year), our success is directly tied to our defensive effort. When we lock down and play D, which is most of the time outside of spurts, we're very, very difficult to beat.

Scal is literally gushing over Kyrie right now.  He has been all game.  Dude is shooting 37% from the field (again).  Every starter is in double figures on way fewer shots.  Two of these guys are practically children.  And Horford has played another complete game.  This 'star' thing is absolutely hilarious to me. It borders on insanity.

If this game proves anything, it's that having good shooters (Crabbe, Harris) can make any team competitive

Smart can't run an offense. Love the guy but he's a great sixth man on this team forever.

He can. The problem is he is not running anything tonight and forcing ill advised shots.

No he can't.

Brad disagrees with you.
Yes, and that's precisely why the team blew the lead.

It's not rocket science. When you have Irving, Brown, Tatum and Horford, you can afford to have at least one of them on the floor at all times.

Ok after 3 or 4 years I am over Smart . At list for now.
Can’t wait for the next offseason videos of smart shooting 20 3s in a row

I can live with his bad 3 pt shotting, but it's the 2 pt shooting that's frustrating me.

Not nearly as critical of Brad as Koz, but there are certain peculiarities with his rotation that drive me absolutely nuts.

Need a real offensive player on the court.  If I have a gripe with Stevens this year, it's that we have spend too much time running units with nobody who can create good looks.  On a Smart/Rozier/Ojeleye/Morris/Theis unit, your only hope of a decent shot is a Morris iso.

Shameless plug.

Thank you, MM!

Smart is a master bricklayer, we all know that.  But he usually makes up for it with everything else he typically does on the court which happens to be absent tonight.  There's a reason Stevens, widely acknowledged as one of the best coaches in the league, plays him 30 minutes per game.  You're free to ignore the good things he brings to our team but it gets annoying when you try to bait other people with your tireless anti-Smart hate.

Well if it was me I'd want to play Al and KI together as much as possible to develop more chemistry. Its Hayward that's better suited to play with the bench more. I think he pairs nicely with Rozier and Smart.

The difference this year is the C's have MULTIPLE scoring threats and MULTIPLE closers.

Poor Isaiah last year had to do it all alone (and was fairly successful), but they weren't a team someone looked at and thought "championship" because of no other true scoring threats/closers.

There's our best iso scorer -- Tatum!  The offense is at it's best with Kyrie either penetrating and dishing, or in the PnR with Horford.

They need to get a guy who can shoot/score for the bench with that DPE

The way they have this set up now isn't bad. Sub Morris out early so he can hold down the bench unit. That's how OKC is using Melo.

How do you spell it?   J-A-S-O-N Space T-A-T-U-M.

Yeah. Duke.   No. Not like the royalty. The school. Yeah.  Thank you very much.

I would like Kyrie's shot distribution to be more like IT's last year, though. He needs to take more threes instead of those long twos.

He's the type that could bother Draymond. We will need that....

Yeah, I think he's doing just fine.

I'm glad you're happy, I'm not.  25 points on 20 shots, too much iso basketball, and continued inconsistency is not "franchise" or "mvp."  But you guys can knock yourselves out.  Must be fun.

I don't remember last years team winning 13 in a row.

I remember them having a weak defensive team and a terrible rebounding team.

Yes. He almost did even after the double take.

It's only 15 games in, we do have a lot to clean up. 13-2 is an excellent record! This team is very exciting!

LOL, yeah, who likes 13 game winning streaks anyways?

I don't get why it is so hard for you to see Kyrie is better than IT.

Did you post like this after every inefficient game IT had his first year and a half with us?

I am pretty sure you didn't.

Kyrie is playing great ball, even with the poor stats.

Thank the good lord we have him on the team, and realize he was an immediate, and large, upgrade.

You can continue to henpeck, but it will just continue to take away from your credibility.

Ya but he pulled it back down realizing he hadn't heard the horn sound yet.  Probably re-living that last second steal where he blew that dunk.

Either CBS or, preferably Kyrie, needs talk to him about not getting down on himself.  Kyrie may also be able to get him to relax and get some rhythm which JB lacks naturally.

Guys coming back from injury, on a new team, playing with that annoying mask while all the attention are on you, are given leeway to try to get into rhythm. You dont know squat, you are just a frickin hater whose mouth spews nothing but hatred for Kyrie.

Im not a kyrie fan, but it just bugs me that people dont even give a chance to a member of the Celtics. Some people decided from the get go that he is bad/mediocre. People telling that Kyrie is "hyped" when in fact there are more posts and threads dedicated to thrashing him.

Great win with almost no production from our bench. Several guys had moments in the game where they just seemed to take over.

Still, the highlight of my night might be the Brooklynettes. No, not because I care about their choreography, but because that might be one of the best names [for anything] I have ever heard. Their creative team really nailed that one!

Loved what I saw from the starters except there wasn't enough movement of the ball and off the ball. Brown, Tatum and Morris with excellent all around games.

13 in a row and this team isn't close to playing their best ball of the season.

Just love this Celtic team.

Kyrie has been a big part of our 13 game win streak, and has been our best player, and undisputed leader.

Excuse people for finding the fact you hate him and wish to see us fail because of him, somewhat intolerable.

Best ball handler ever was Cousy, he had to dribble with his hand on top of the ball only. Amazing! Kyrie is incredible too.

Edit: Is it specified somewhere (e.g., sticky) how many personal attacks result in a ban?

I'm not sure you are noticing a 13 game win streak.

I can see already this season that Jaylen has improved his passing and is more spatially aware, big jump from last season.

needs to improve handle. once he does. watch out
lock him up in the gym  for a month with Kyrie, the best ball handler to ever play the game. Teach brown to handle and don’t come out until he’s as good as Kyrie. Problem solved

Best ball handler ever was Cousy, he had to dribble with his hand on top of the ball only. Amazing! Kyrie is incredible too.

That is something, isn't it?

Almost two different categories of ball handling, in my opinion.

I feel Kyrie would have been a he'll of a dribbler, even back in the day, but I also would love to see what Cousey could have done if he had grown up with today's allowances on handling the rock.

Watching Cousy is crazy looking but Kyrie is amazing with modern rules. That's why you can't compare eras. The rule changes and conditioning and sports medicine, etc... My favorite what if is Bird in this modern era when you can't touch anyone.

My favorite, is what would the 3 or. record books say if Larry was encouraged to out up 5-10 a game.

But that is so true on How you can't really compare across eras.

Tarheels is entitled to his opinion. You can debate his stance and disagree. But name calling and disrespecting others is not allowed. If it continues in this thread or others, there will be repercussions.

At what point does an opinion become trolling, or is trolling just allowed because its too difficult to police? He has consistently taken over topics with his negativity and made obvious inflamatory statements that are factless or heavily skewed. Its getting difficult to have conversations with others due to his trolly interactions.

When he gets a response, he cries for the mods to penalize people. This is kinda' like when Draymond Green instigates a fight with someone, but the other guy gets T'd up for his reaction.

You think you are credible? Whatever you say isnt going to be worth a [dang] thing. You are a hater from day 1.

Tarheels your bias is shining through. 0 credibility, 0!!

I've noticed that this seems to be a pattern of yours with respect to questioning another poster's credibility, so my question, here, is what gives you the right to determine the, well, credibility of the poster of your choice?  Is it like a credit score?  Do you work for Moody's?  What kind of rating system do you employ when making these assessments?  What are the criteria?  Are you one of the guys from freecreditreport.com?  What instrument do you play?  Are you the driver or the dude who serves chowder and iced tea, not to mention fish, to tourists in t-shirts, or is your scene more of a Renaissance Fair?

That aside, I know that we've had our squabbles in the past, but I have to admit, even for you, this is beyond the pale, imo.  Settle down, brotato chip.

You think someone who has deep hatred of a single player has credibility with his opinion regarding said player? If he talks about Ojeleye sure it has bearing, but about Kyrie? In the court of Law you impeach a witness by proving his bias. You are just defending him because you are in the same boat, him with Kyrie and you with Ainge. We all know nick disliked Kelly, do you see him thrash him every post, at every move Kelly made? Is the name CELTICSblog just for show?

Mods here are quick to defend these guys, punishing and reprimanding the few who choose to speak out against them with their constant hate posts. Sometimes a single thread meant to appreciate certain players gets hijacked by these guys and turned into endless complaints about players of the team they are a "fan" of. These so-called "fans" look at their choice hated personalities and look for every flaw they can find, do their spin on them and never give them the benefit of the doubt. Who is the true fan, Nets fans who appreciated what their team gave tonight, or Celtics fans who maliciously tracks mistakes of certain personalities so they can thrash them?

OFC all these people can do is cry and ask for defense from the mods.

You have people who thrashed IT for playing poorly after her sister died, or the team right after Hayward got injured. And Celticsblog defended these people, protected them!

Can we expect CB to restrain these people? Of course not, they will shelter them, protect them and encourage them like usual. How else do these people become braver and bolder every single day?!

Sure ban me for protecting the CELTICS in Celticsblog at the same time sheltering the bashers. If that's the way this is ran now then I am glad I wont be a member anymore. Sayonara!

We've won 13 in a row! Irving is a leader on the team and the leading scorer.

We get that you hate him, but until Boston starts losing you're gonna be hard pressed to find too many Cs fans willing to jump on the hate train.

Well, that's a heck of a goodbye.

I find it best to ignore that which I do not like.  I'm far from perfect at it, but I try.  But if it's too much, sure, leaving is probably the best thing.

I do feel like maliciously attacking Celtics players can go too far, and shouldn't be allowed (it's guaranteed to rile up a lot of fans), but that's not my line to draw.  The mods here do a fine enough job I'm not going to complain either way.

I'd guess that Tarheel is still taken aback from the IT Trade.

IT was essentially used and tossed aside. That is still the rawness of it all.

Admittedly - for ME - it is STILL a bitter pill to swallow. I get that. I was ONCE on Tarheel's train. While I may not be the Conductor anymore I'm still waiting on Kyrie to take us past CLE.

To ME - this is the only thing that matters...in the playoffs. That is not an unfair expectation, right?

Take this team farther than your predecessor did. I don't even care if it's THIS year or NEXT...I'll give him time to get GH back.

Just because someone doesn't like a particular player doesn't mean that they can't offer valid criticism.  It's not an either/or thing, imo.

Court of law?  Impeachment?  Do you even hear yourself talking/see what you're posting?  Since when is tarheels on trial, here, let alone for impeachment?  Besides, you're not even a fan of that point guard ;).

Also, don't put words in my mouth.  If you had bothered to pay attention, I've actually given Ainge credit for Semi, taking Brown over Dunn (although I'm not giving up on Kris), and readily admitted when I have been wrong.  That's not a big deal to me.  Do I like Ainge and his practices?  Absolutely not, but that doesn't mean that I can't recognize when he makes the better move, as he should, btw.  I wasn't for Tatum, either, owing to concerns over his quickness and athleticism, not to mention his penchant for being a black hole, but again, he looks great thus far and I've never been so happy to be so wrong, even though I still like Jonathan Isaac.  See - is that really so hard?

As for nick and Kelly, well, I don't know about every single post, but the former wasn't the only one to voice his dismay at many an opportunity.  I never liked KO, either, as you know, although I don't see your point regarding the name of the site.  Are you arguing that because this is a Celtic blog that the players on our team are exempt from criticism, or is it more to do with the overall negativity?  A combination of the two?  I honestly don't know where you're going with that one.

I understand your frustration, but people being reprimanded by the mods for "choosing to speak out" aren't typically being punished for that reason, unless something has changed.  It all has to do with how a poster goes about it.  If you're going to call them a hater or a troll, attack their credibility, and give them the "you know nothing Jon Snow" treatment, then yeah, you're most likely going to be flagged because personal insults are against forum rules, of which you still seem to be unaware, but if you rebut them with, say, humor, go about it in an entirely different and non-personal fashion, or even just flat out ignore them, you'll be fine.

I realize that things do get quite heated on here in terms of basketball and current events, for example, but you don't have to cross the line.  Just step back, relax, go to another thread, or even go attend to your cat for a little while :). All I'm trying to say, here, is that there are plenty of other options available to you.  Vent to another poster via message, idk.  Whatever floats your boat.

As for what constitutes as being a true fan, we all have our ways, but again, I don't think that it's your nor my place to be lecturing people on that.  Unless, of course, we're talking about bandwagon fans, lol.  This is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable fan bases in all of sports, so people having strong views, with which you agree or not, shouldn't be at all surprising, imo.

I missed the game, but just watched the "9 min 40 sec" highlights replay on YouTube.  The Nets look like a better team this year even without Russell or Lin, and limited minutes for Mosgov.  They just seem more athletic and got some nice sharpshooting from multiple players.  I am trying to convince myself that this was a quality win, not a gimme.
