Game Notes

The Celtics and Bucks meet for the 2nd of 4 games this season.  The Bucks came to Boston for the Celtics home opener.  It was the day after the Celtics lost Gordon Hayward to the gruesome injury and the Celtics were playing in back to back games and just didn't have enough to overcome the Greek Freak and company.  The Bucks won that game 108-100.  They will meet again on December 4th in Boston and on April 3 in Milwaukee.

The Celtics have had time to regroup somewhat and try to gain some cohesiveness to the team after losing Hayward.   Marcus Morris still has not played for the Celtics and has targeted the October 30th game vs the Spurs for his return.  Marcus Smart has missed the last two games after rolling both ankles in the first game against the Bucks.  He remains day to day and will be a game time decision for this game.

The Bucks three wins have been against the Celtics, the Blazers and the Hornets.  Their lone loss was at home to the Cavaliers.   Thirteen players have returned this season from the Bucks team that won 42 games last season and was the 6th seed in the East.  They are mostly healthy, with just Jabari Parker out  as he rehabs from a torn ACL.  He is targeting February for a return.

Key Matchups
(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Irving_Kyrie_cle1617.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/nba/players/full/2566769.png&w=65&h=90&scale=crop&background=0xcccccc&transparent=false)
Kyrie Irving vs Malcolm Brogdon
Brogdon, last year's surprise Rookie of the Year, is averaging 16.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.  In the first game against the Celtics he had 19 points, 1 rebound and 4 assists.    Kyrie's stats from the first game are close to Brogden's with 17 points, 4 rebounds 3 assists and 3 steals.  For the year, Kyrie is averaging 20 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6 assists.  He has had some time to get more acquainted with his new teammates and hopefully he will win the matchup with the Bucks' second year player.

(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Horford_Al_bos1617.jpg)  vs  (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Antetokounmpo_Giannis_mil1617.jpg)
Al Horford  vs Giannis Antetokounmpo
"The Greek Freak" is a tough cover for anyone and Celtics' veteran Al Horford will get the job of trying to slow Antetokounmpo down.  Horford is coming off a big game against the Knicks where he played excellent defense on Kristaps Porzingis holding him to just 12 points.  Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 36.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game,  will be an even tougher cover for him.  Hopefully Al is up to the task.

Honorable Mention
Jayson Tatum vs Khris Middleton
Both players are coming off 20 point games and will be looking to continue the momentum in this one.  Both players are good defenders and will look to make it difficult for the other to have a big game in this one.  Middleton is averaging 15.3 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while Tatum is averaging 22 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals.  Another early test for the Celtics rookie.

Keys to the Game
Defense - Defense is always a key to winning.   The Celtics have been playing good defense so far this season, in spite of having to work in 11 new players.  The Celtics have a defensive rating of 97.4, good for 7th in the league.  The Bucks' defensive rating is 105.8, which is 19th.  If the Celtics continue to play tough team defense, they have a good chance to win this game.

Move the Ball - The Celtics have shown some very good ball movement at times and at other times, the ball seems to stick and players try to do too much.  When the ball sticks and when players try to do too much themselves, it rarely ends well.  In their win over the Knicks on Tuesday, the ball moved very well and they were able to find the open man.  They have to continue that in this game.

Rebound - The Celtics can't score if they don't have the ball.  The Celtics struggled to rebound last season but have looked much better on the boards in the preseason.  It takes effort to rebound and when the Celtics put out that extra effort to get rebounds, it usually translates to other areas of their game.  The Celtics are 9th in the league with 46.3 rebounds per game while the Bucks, in spite of having Antetounmpo attacking the glass, are last with just 37.8 rebounds per game.  If the Celtics continue to crash the glass as a team, they give themselves a much better chance to get a win.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team from start to finish.  They have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and on defense and going to the basket and grabbing rebounds.  The more aggressive team usually gets the benefit of the calls also.  They need to be the team that wants it more for all 48 minutes.  No let up.

X-Factors
Continuity - The Celtics have just 4 players returning from last season and one of those 4 players has been out with an ankle sprain.  On the other hand, the Bucks have 13 players returning from last year's team.  The Celtics also have to refigure their sets after losing Gordon Hayward in the first game.  Hopefully, the Celtics are getting it together and finding their chemistry.

Road Game - The Celtics are on the road and will need to block out the hostile crowd and focus on playing Celtic basketball.  The Celtics are a young team and typically, young players struggle on the road.  The Celtics' young players so far have shown maturity beyond their years and hopefully that continues as they hit the road for this game.

With this being held in Milwaukee...id say we lose this one.
Hope the refs would give Jaylen some slack...i mean he couldn't touch the Freak..foul trouble killed any momentum Jaylen had.

the Bucks will be pulling out all the stops when they return to play at the MECCA, their home from 1968-88, for their Oct. 26 game against the Boston Celtics. Not only will they be wearing retro jerseys, but they will also be playing on a replica of their old court which was designed by artist Robert Indiana in 1977

Wow, Theis starting tonight instead of Baynes. Seems like Brad wants Baynes off the bench for Monroe. I worry about Al covering Giannis, though, especially the leeway he's been getting with the refs lately.

The more I think about it, it probably has as much to do with Baynes guarding Monroe as it does for giving us 6 more fouls with Theis, given that Brown's playing time was limited against the Bucks last week due to all the foul calls Giannis was getting on him.

I would imagine that Al is the one guarding Giannis starting off, but it'll be interesting to see if Theis gets a crack at him, too.

I like this, theis has some speed and size to maybe still with greco and has a few fouls to give.  You really have to step back and appreciate Gianni's improvement and how he seems to be a good guy/attitude

Good. This is what I was calling for in the last game vs Milwaukee = Theiss.

The team needed more size and length at the forward slots without Hayward. Stevens instead went small and used more small backcourts and three guard lineups. Which opened up our defense too much and did not provide enough extra offense to justify it. Theiss won't give that offense either but he will allow the C's to stay bigger and retain more defensive & rebounding integrity.

Happy to see this adjustment made.

As written by FL, Giannis is averaging 36.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game on 65.9% shooting.  Just ridiculous stuff.  He could win MVP this year depending on how much his teammates step up and help the Bucks secure wins.

Need to find a way to at least make him work to get his points without fouling.  I was thoroughly disgusted with how many favorable calls he got against us when we played them a week ago (he shot 13 free throws on some questionable calls).

We're lucky to be in this game with all the turnovers and being ice cold from 3, even though we've had great looks.

Welp, not a bad place to be all things considered. If Brown can come back and shot better then 0-8 from the field we have a good shot at his game. Gonna need his scoring to supplement Kyrie. I do like that even when he's struggling he kept playing defense and pulled down six boards. Playing good defense so far, the Celtics have kept Giannis in check. Rozier needs to get his head in the game. Baynes has been good, Smart looks less dynamic out there, maybe still working through the ankle issue.

The Celtics turn down too many open 2's between a seam, to search for wild contested 3's and contested dunks at the rim.

Yeah, the bucks are a really bad matchup for us.  They are long, fast and we don't really have anyone who can consistently stay with the greek freak.  You try to double Giannis and you get the other guys from the bucks hitting 3s.  They are utilizing the IT clev cavs defense right now on Kyrie.  Blitz doubling him, daring other guys to beat them.  Right now no one is stepping up.

This bucks team could be very scary by the point they get Parker back....It feels like the bucks are better than Wash / Toronto right now.

In 2-3 years after Lebron is gone will it be Bucks / Celtics battling it out to get to the finals?

Yeah, the bucks are a really bad matchup for us.  They are long, fast and we don't really have anyone who can consistently stay with the greek freak.  You try to double Giannis and you get the other guys from the bucks hitting 3s.  They are utilizing the IT clev cavs defense right now on Kyrie.  Blitz doubling him, daring other guys to beat them.  Right now no one is stepping up.

They're good, but they're looking better than they are because we can't hit any threes, besides Kyrie.  If Brown hit some of those shots it'd be a different game.  And it'd help if we had more shooting.  They are long so you have to make them play you to three and we aren not.

much as i like kyrie on offense, that was way too much hero ball at the end.  :P

Really?  he is the only one doing anything.  He passes the ball off when he gets doubled or tripled and no one can help him out.  Not the person to blame.

Exactly, the guy getting the ball out of the Kyrie doubles needs to take the ball to the rim, or at least make someone else rotate, and look for the open man.

yeah Brown hitting some shots would help, or Smart, or Rozier, or Tatum...we just aren't playing smart basketball right now.

Yeah I agree, we are lucky to be this close.  Bucks missed a lot of easy looks.  We need to ramp up the defense in the 2nd half, and crank up the offense execution.

That Jabari Bird guy is a shooter, right?

Play him. We need someone who can knock down some jump-shots.

Larkin is too small and is a poor matchup defensively against everyone on the Bucks.

The rest of the C's are struggling. Give Bird a shot.

Yeah, and he's such a nice guy that you want to root for him (when we're not playing him), but it's hard to overlook how much leeway he gets with the refs. So unfair, especially as much as he charges into people and uses the left arm.

Missed the first half but from what i am seeing Tatum is hesitating to take his shot like he did before. Against NY he would just grab and shoot. He needs to understand that his shot is really difficult to block and he will be okay.

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. He needs to go straight up with it.

Man, Kyrie is absolutely incredible. Even those two misses were in and out. He'll be such an asset at the end of games with his iso offense.

AND due to him relying on his elite ballhandling instead of speed, he should be able to continue doing this for a LONG time.

Obviously a young season, but this is a really, really good win against a good, young, and long team in their building.

Man, if it wasn't for Hayward, Smart, and Morris injuries, we would probably be 5-0 right now.

He took a couple of bad shots that turned out inconsequential, but shots you don't want him to take nonetheless. At least the shots he did make were huge.

Reggie was right on one thing, this chemistry developing between Al and Kyrie is pretty awesome to watch.

Seem like we have a few pairs right now goind well, Tatum Brown, Kyrie Al, Rozier Smart...

Yo crownsy, havent spotted you in a long time!

Nice team Ainge has put together. Wouldve been nicer if he had all pieces available so we could really develop chemistry.

Good to see you too man!

Ha been real busy with work, last year i didn't really get a chance to be around as much as I wanted. I'll try to be home for more games this year

MVP - Horford
Unsung hero - Baynes for timely baskets and FTs in the 1st half, rebounding and solid D on Monroe

Props to Irving for a very solid game.  Efficient shooting and did a great job creating some looks for others.

Three things:

1. Having Aron Baynes sure is nice. Finally, someone can get a rebound when we need one!
2. Marcus Smart's shot selection is still infuriating.
3. I won't be disappointed if I never see Shane Larking play another minute.

Oh, and also, did I mention that Marcus Smart's shot selection is infuriating?

Very good win.

Props to Horford and Irving for great games.  Baynes and Tatum did work.  Brown struggled from the field and missed some looks he usually hits, but he still found a way to help with 10 boards.

Early impression of this team is that their athleticism and interior physicality are much improved over last year.  Good to see.

Nice win with Brown, Rozier, Smart going 6/29. Like that even tho Brown's shot was off he still had 10 rebounds and some good d. Smart had a very Marcus Smart game with some awful shot selection but some clutch 4qrt plays. Horford was a beast, Irving was efficient, Tatum was quiet, Semi had some nice d on the freak. Good overall defensive effort, starting to think our d may be pretty good this year.

The defense for the last 5 to 6 minutes of the game was money. The guys were on them for real.

Mid fourth quarter the "Smart Rozier" brigade got them up 7 and that was it. Get Kyrie in there and run the blendah.

He drains clutch threes. Can't take that away from him. That's one thing that has earned him so many minutes despite his historically bad shooting.

Regardless, he still takes way too many bad threes that he has no business shooting. They are horribly annoying, and set the team back. Guy has the smarts of a piece of rock sometimes.

I got the opposite feeling.  Even when the Celtics were down points.   It seemed to me the Bucks were treading water the whole game .  The Celtics seemed to be ready to drown them any minute .

Bucks , caught the Celtics in the first game at very very bad point , huge emotional distress over Gordons injury , Morris injury , upsetting of whatever fragile amount of team cohesion had been built in preseason .  Bucks took advantage of a crippled , emotionally down team .

I think the better team won and there was nothing the Bucks could do to stop it .....being a special day , special place, special court , etc .....etc ....  Better talent prevailed.

You've gotta understand though, that taking a contested 3 6 seconds into the shot clock is not good.. especially with what brad is running here. Make a couple passes, swing the ball, then if there's nothing going I'm sure everyone is fine with that shot selection then. Love Marcus and what he brings to this team but those shots are the one complaint I have with his game. Heck even when kyrie does it I'm not too fond of it.

I didn't watch the home opener so this was the first of Giannis I'd seen this season. Is anyone else shocked by how much muscle he has put on? He looks like a much taller Corey Maggette, for those who remember him. He makes some of his teammates like Middleton and Henson look like toothpicks.

Well, I said one thing :) But honestly, the fact that he plays nearly 30 a night for a very good team despite the fact that he's one of the poorest shooters in the history of the game is a testament of how strong his contributions are in other aspects of the game.

Still, some of those shots... SMH.

Yup, agree with all comments.  His gunning for shots and waiting til the end of the shot clock drive me crazy, but his chances of hitting 3's seem to double in the last 2-3 minutes of games, and he obviously brings several other skills and great intangibles to the table.

One thing that stuck out in my mind that was different than last year's teams was the Kyrie block on Middleton on the post up. Last year the C's would have 100% helped IT early in that situation.

Kyrie is still getting targeted by opposing teams like IT was but the degree hasn't been as extreme so far. Nor have the C's helped in such an extreme manner.

according to my eye test, Kyrie Irving is perhaps the worst defender Ive ever seen when it comes to fighting over screens. Outside of that, hes not been too bad. Hes really active in passing lanes etc. and I havent noticed him as especially bad off-ball.

I think he's substantially better than IT, and isn't undersized.  It matters.  It improves the defense that he is the smallest guy out there a lot of times.  Teams could base their whole offense around going at IT and I don't think it's the same with Kyrie.  He's been holding his own.

I agree. I just think he has a better ability in space. Thomas, despite his size and quickness, wasn't really exceptional in staying in front of people or playing the passing lanes.

Kyrie doesn't seem to enjoy contact too much, but effort, positioning, and reaction haven't been an issue so far. We've upgraded his position defensively this season, without a question.
