Here we are again. A very stressful summer later, let's goooo!!!
I hope Baynes does start. Part of me wants to buy a Baynes jersey and go play without regard for human life at my local YMCA.

I can't wait for the first (preseason) game of the season and seeing us all rage about our "weak centers not rebounding" and "our ball-dominant PG being a ballhog" and "refs being trash"!!!  :laugh:and dont forget how the entire careers of the rookies will be decided and etched in stone from this first pre-season game!!! it's not a cb game thread without that. ;D

will be so odd to see them without IT, AB and Crowder - I loved those guys

Brad says Kyrie, Gordon, and Al not likely to play after halftime tonight.
Like, I knew this was coming given how's he treated the preseason in the past, but why in the world would you not take advantage of these preseason games given how much roster turnover we had this summer? This just doesn't make sense to me.

Because it's the first pre-season game, and any value gained by those three playing 10 extra minutes tonight is outweighed by the downside of one of them getting hurt is they ramp up for the season, even tho the chance is small. The goal is to have the team firing on all cylinders in April, not October. 10 minutes now will have no impact on that goal.

I mean, I guess, but I think that's being overly protective given our roster turnover and the fact that the preseason was legitimately cut in half this year.
Brown is starting. CBS Said smarts experience and impact is needed off bench for now.

Baynes for tonight
i'm excited! you excited?
Marcus Smart 20 points you heard it firstI'd be sooo happy.
This feel so wierddddd
Man is the defense really going to be better than last season?! :o
ahh Tatum
Hayward is an underrated passer. The ball movement is beautiful
Smart looks like Steph Curry out there ;D
Marcus Allen!!
Oh man, Smart is going to have a breakout year!!
Hayward is not over rated...hes freaking aggressive on defense
Oh man, Smart is going to have a breakout year!!
Good ol' Celtics Blog, where you can always expect the most reasonable and measured takes :).
Is it me, or is Al even much more fit this year?

Nothing but completely objective and rational analysis from this guy, especially regarding Smart. ;)
OMG an offensive rebound by Yabusele! I forgot what those look like.
Tatum is rushing things. Both Jayson and Gershon are going to be fine.

Hornets bench beating Celtics bench.
no reason our bench cannot be strong
rozier
smart
tatum
semi
yabusele
morris (if baynes starts)
Hope we get to see a bit of the deep bench tonight. Theis / Nader / Semi
Not even close on those shots by Tatum.
Kyrie's D hasn't always been the most fundamental, but he's been pretty active and aggressive so far.
Need to have at least one of Hayward or Horford on the court. But really only because Morris is not available. Baynes came back in and stabilized the front court.
Man Baynes is a good defender.Yeah, I'm liking him a lot, compared to what we've had there the past few seasons.

it is first pre season game at garden for the guy. give him time.
Did Lamb become good when I wasn't looking?
Baynes is like a mountain.

How does Haynes look? The box score says he is active.
That is vintage smart. Drains one three, airballs the next one.

I am definitely overacting to how good this team looks!

He does more than just the dirty work...solid player.
Baynes mid-range game is wet.
Come on, Smart. That's a bad shot.I would like him to stop looking for his 3 every frickin time he has the ball beyond the arc.

Come on, Smart. That's a bad shot.
They have missed a lot of wide open shots. I don't expect that continue.
Walker is a pretty dangerous player. Easy to forget.
Preseason I know, but the best stat so far? We have 27 rebounds at the half, including 8 offensive rebounds.
This team will end up a much better-balanced team than last year. This team will be flat out deep by the end oof the year.
Wow. Smart has taken SEVEN three pointers in the first half...and made three. So far so good. Maybe he will be curry II. ;D
Talent is there but you need to have consistency. it's a function of talent. Young guys are rarely consistent. This team will end up a much better-balanced team than last year. This team will be flat out deep by the end oof the year.
yep. whoever said we had no bench is living in fairy land. we will have a good 1st and second string before it is all said and done. the talent is there.
Kyrie has already shown that he's a much better passer than people give him credit for. I think he's even been a bit tentative tonight trying not to shoot too much and trying to facilitate more.
we know hayward, kyrie and horford will scoreGood summary of my thoughts too, tp. Tatum is going to get open looks with GH, KI and AH on the floor.
if marcus and brown are much improved
and tatum learns fast with others. baynes looks rock solid.
wow
What’s with all these nothing fouls they’re calling
Hate that we're not playing our starters and they're keeping theirs in.
Jaylen made the mistake of going under the pick again after Batum made a 3 on the previous possession. Luckily Batum missed but it's not good to make the same mistake twice in a row.Batum is schooling Jaylen. I hope he steps up and matches his offensive intensity with some focus on defense.
Is it Theis time? And some other deep bench players too.

I am not sure that 3-8 from the field is really schooling someone, but it seems like Batum is hitting shots when Brown is on him....

It's middle school...
...the 3rd quarter, from which we learn that once we hit the regular season, one of Al Horford, Kyrie Irving or Gordon Hayward must be on the floor at all times.

Not overall in the game, but Nic hit like 3-4 shots in a row there. Brad should tell Kyrie that he needs to score when Hayward and Horford are out.
Howard getting a star call...
Howard getting a star call...
Yabu overcommited. We're lucky that Howard was fouled
Tatum is pushing.
Yabu isn't very good, but I love his hustle and activity out there. He's big and he knows how to use his size in rebounding and physical play.
3rd string looking better than 2nd string....

Theis has to be ahead of both Yabu and Semi. Also, dare I say that Larkin's ability to run the offense is a much better for the second unit than Rozier's athletic/reckless game.

Agreed, Larkin looks like he can run a team.
baynes with 10 points so far!So, is it too early to put him in the HOF? ;D
THEIS IS NICE AGAIN! ;DI sense that we will be seeing this a lot this season. ;D
THEIS IS NICE AGAIN! ;DI sense that we will be seeing this a lot this season. ;D
We have some rebounders this year!
Looks like Kyrie is an impressive 4-11 from the field in 19 minutes. Solid efficiency. Bet he looks super cool doing it though, right?
this team is 15 deep! (:
I think Theiss might make this team's rotation. He is bigger than I thought. Much bigger than Jerebko.
day-um. Larkin, Theis, Nader all playing really well...competition for minutes might be tougher than we all thought for our 2nd string guys.
So far Danny looks All-NBA GM.
Theis an athletic Olynyk?
Theis will sign with Jordan Brand this week in Charlotte. The Jordan brand is changing its name to Theis brand.
Jordan brand can’t hold Theis’s jockstrapTheis will sign with Jordan Brand this week in Charlotte. The Jordan brand is changing its name to Theis brand.
All these rebounds are making me dizzy!
Yeah, going to have to get me a Theis jersey. :P
I know it's just the first pre-season game, but these dudes are making Danny Ainge look like a genius.

Finding a 25-year old rookie in Germany who is a Hall of Fame lock is his coup de grace.
How's Irving, Smart, Hayward, Horford, Theis for a starting lineup?Baynes played well. Even better is Theis as backup secret weapon off the bench.
Yabu looks overweight.
Semi plays with a little motor. Aside from the 3, he was practically invisible. Yabu made a lot of mistakes, but he does have a motor.
Larkin could get more minutes than Rozier, more of a point guard.
Abdul Nader playing better defense than I remember. Also his length really helps him when he switches to cover a big.
Jesus Theis! that lob

I’m good with a starting lineup of just Theis playing all five positions at once

Theis could start for this team...he came in and just destroyed the second unit.Said it earlier, I would start Baynes as a more traditional center who can bang with anyone, then bring Theis off the bench against 2nd units. He did well that way tonight.
theis and baynes............................
i just..............i just.........................man
Gordon's hair is glorious.Got got bumped a few times early in the game. Completely unaffected.
Im still on the floor roll n
Tommy checking Baynes out " in the shower".
LOL..i was like did he just say that.
;D ;D ;D
I do think he has a chance to get in the rotation and stay there - because he can score. Obviously he has to prove he can do it consistently against better talent than he saw in Maine but he certainly looked good tonight.Larkin could get more minutes than Rozier, more of a point guard.

Our frontline of Horford / Morris / Baynes / Theis is starting to look really impressive right now, no matter how we arrange them.Baynes had a good shooting night, and played Howard really well on defense. Not sure who should start, but there's no question that Morris is a better overall offensive player. In a lineup with Horford, Kyrie, Hayward, they are ALL getting better looks, more single coverage. Now add Tatum and you've got 5 legitimate scoring threats on the floor. I'm just salivating at that prospect.
And I was worried about that being our biggest weakness!
I initially thought Morris was the clear cut starter up front, but starting to question that now. If Theis can keep rebounding like this then it might make more sense for him to start alongside Horford, and then bring Morris/Baynes off the bench. I feel they'd be a nice combo with Morris bringing an offensive spark on that second unit.
Banes may well turn out to be a better version of current day Andrew Bogut. Seems to have a similar style of game and similar skill set, but without the health concerns.
Of course this was just one game, so I'll try not to get TOO excited about our 2nd/3rd unit guys - but if they keep this up then this team will be a lot better then I thought.

CBS done a nice job in such a short time.. He has got the guys buying in to playing defense.

If Theis keeps this up, Id be fine with Baynes starting alongside Horford. My biggest concern with that duo is if they have to sit there's no one to play 5 reliably.Theis looks big enough to play the 5. He's not a bruiser like Baynes but does a lot of other things well. I feel A LOT better about the frontcourt rotation after this game.
I loved Theis aggression. How is Yabusele playing ahead of this guy?I wouldn't pay much attention to the rotations in the first few pre-season games. CBS is going to mix it up a lot and get a good look at everyone. Expect to see Theis in the game much sooner on Friday.
