Was watching a game recently in which the announcers pronounced Daniel Theis' last name to sound like "thice".
My pleasure.

Yeah, it sounds like they are saying Dice....

I'm curious so see how he pronounces it. Based on the German language it could be pronounced as "zis', with the TH creating a Z sound.

/taɪ̯s/ is my best bet, and it is in moments like this I regret dropping German after a couple of years.
I'm p sure there is at least one German native speaker in the Forums though, I remember him commenting on Theis and the German national team a few days ago.

you are correct.. not native speaker (trying hard though).
th in german is pronounced as t
and ei as i in ice
so it is tice :D

Wouldn't it be a little bit more like 'tize', since 's' is usually pronounced less softly, but rather hard (as in 'Musik', 'super', 'sondern' and so on)??? ;)

Now that i think about it that is better.... But trying to find the right article , the right casus and where to place the verb leaves me no time to pay attention to pronounciation :D

No, that only applies when the S is at the beginning of a word and followed by a vowel, or when it's between vowels. Theis is pronounced like "Tice". It begins just like "type" or "tight", and ends just like "ice" or "mice."

It's actually more like "dice". I'm not a native speaker, either, but I have a degree in German and had phonetics as part of my Middle High German class.
My stereotype of Germans is that they're inclined to split hairs - and maybe people who find their ways into Middle High German classes fit the stereotype as well...
Perhaps Daniel Theis will show an obsessive attention to detail, something that will serve him well in the NBA.

If Borat was to respond to this post, does anyone know what he'd say?

"Theis, [dang]ed Theis and statistics" - Celtics fans arguing over Theis' advanced stats vs. the eye test.

I think Theis could be a Zaza like roll player for The Celtics. He's a defense first player and a good shot block/deterrer...

Wow Theis sounds just like Waldo Von Erich

Sooo I'm from Berlin, Germany and I can confirm that it is pronounced Tice ;D
Theis, Theis Baby meine Freunde!

Given the amount of playing time that he is likely to get, this thread could end up spending more time discussing his name than the announcers will for the entire season.

Im thinking of KFC everytime I hear his name.
