One wants to be the man, the other doesn't mind the idea of playing with LeBron. Irving goes to Portland to be the man, Lillard gets those deep playoffs runs (and possibly rings) he's always wanted in Cleveland.

This would be the best case outcome for Cleveland in my opinion...

I thought about this yesterday after reading Lillard's comments about playing with LeBron, and while it makes sense for Cleveland, I really hope this doesn't happen. I absolutely adore Lillard and would hate to see him on the Cavs.
If he wants to be in the finals, he should come to Boston instead ;)

They just signed a true PG in DRose. Plus the Cavs have decent backup PGs.
They may not need an All-Star PG but an All-Star SG or SF who would help LeBron in the scoring.

Lillard loves Portland. Talks very highly of it and has pit down tremendous roots there. I think if those teams make a trade McCollum is the main piece going to Cleveland

I don't see the benefit for Portland. Irving is basically a lateral move but they like Lillard and he's established there. What's the incentive for Portland?

Portland is already has two all-star guards who can light it up but do not defend or facilitate enough to contend.
I don't see how swapping either CJ/Dame for Kyrie helps their situation.

I'm not actually sure of Portland's luxury tax situation anymore with the Crabbe trade, but just to save money.

Portland will see their current luxury tax bill drop from $48.3M to $4.4M with the Allen Crabbe trade to Brooklyn. The Trail Blazers now have $122.2M in salary and are $2.9M below the luxury tax. The Trail Blazers currently project to save $60M in salary and taxes for 2017-18.
How can a team below the luxury tax still have to pay $4.4m? Is it from stretching Nicholson?
Either way, swapping Irving for Lillard gets them a younger player and further reduces salary (which is always important for a team who might not even make the playoffs). Also shakes up a team who finished a disappointing .500.
Not saying Portland does it, but I can see some reason why they might.

I didn't realize the disparity in their contract was so big.
And it's kind of amazing that Kyrie is still that young.

I don't see Portland doing this. They have DL under contract for another 4 years. Why would they trade for a player who is no better with only 2 years left on his deal? They've largely fixed their luxury tax issues, so this trade makes zero sense for them, especially since CLE has nothing else to send them other than KI.
