3 on 3 is a different beast. I'm thinking players with quick transition defense and offense would thrive better. Maybe players than can play above the rim too.
Westbrook
Lebron
Davis
Backups:
Curry
Durant
Towns

Wait... transition defense? Is this 3 on 3 halfcourt? Or is the court just shorter?
-
Would it be on a full sized court? Or the more classic type where they only use the half of the court and you have to cross over the 3 point line? That changes the game drastically.
I'd send either a trio of:
Harden
Kawhi
LeBron
or
Curry
KD
Anthony Davis

Having fewer players opens up the court, too, so outside shooting would be less important than being able to score inside. I'd probably go with Harden instead of Curry

It's interesting. Are they going with free throws, 2pt field goals, and 3pt field goals? The percentage for 2pt field goals would seem to go up with only 3 defenders, possibly making the efficiency discrepancy between 2s and 3s less in a 3-on-3 game. But then again, helping out on defense is likely to leave an open shooter even more open than in 5-on-5 where you have more options to rotate. I've never seen 3-on-3 with high level players so I'm not sure how it would work.

Fultz
Kawhi
Cousins

FIBA 3-on-3 is three players plus one sub per team, half-court. 1-point FG inside the arc, 2-point FG behind the arc. No jump balls; a coin toss is used to start, and any jump ball situation is a turnover: defense gets the ball. 12-second shot clock. Sudden death to 21 points wins, or a two-point lead after 10 minutes. Overtime is a 2-point sudden death.

Based on the questions I'm seeing in this thread, I figure some of you haven't heard about the Big 3 League yet:
https://big3.com/
I imagine the IOC rules will be similar to this, but without the 4 point shot.
-
FIBA makes the rules, not the IOC.
-
Reading the topic I kept thinking this must be a joke.... They should also add 2on2 and 1on1... HORSE too
-
I just realized that these games will not be played by best NBA players as they'll be playing the 5 vs 5.
I imagine it'll be younger NBA players

Fultz Brown and Ayton, all representing Boston.

If it's 1 and 2 pointers then it will quickly become a 2 pt. shoot out.
-
hopefully they let the pros play, as I think this could greatly help some of the smaller countries that really only have 3 or 4 top flight basketball players and who shouldn't be fielding full size teams.
There will be 8 teams, 4 players each (men and women each have 8 teams). The participants are called "specialists", so I'm guessing that means they can only play in 3 on 3 and not the full sized team tournaments.
-
I would say shooters who are versatile deenders are the key to 3-on-3. If you want to make the best possible team in the world I would pick. KD, Klay, PG
Another great option would be retired players. Give me Pierce, Kobe and T-Mac not sure how they would be in 2020
For USA basketball I hope they stay away from NBA players for this and use Americans playing over seas. This would give a chance to some good players to rep their country.

So .. it sounds like the rules definitely favor shot making, right?
If a shot outside the arc is 2PT and inside it is just 1PT, then shots outside the arc have an even greater scoring efficiency advantage (100%) than they do in regular basketball (50%).
So this would seem to favor good shooters from outside.
What about fouls? How are fouls handled? Is there just one FT shot on a shooting foul?

Id imagine there arent free throws.
In most larger 3 v 3 tourneys Ive played in, theyve always had no free throws untill a team uses up a certain number of fouls. The number is usually decently high and there just to prevent people from hacking a ton.

Durant
Thompson
Curry

Starters: Lebron, Durant, Davis
Backups: Kawhi, Harden, Towns

Kawhi
James
Durant
3 best players in the league all happen to be able to defend a ton of positions and Kawhi and KD can really shoot it.
-
For team USA
KAT
Paul George
Chris Paul

This sounds like a really cool addition to the olympics! Do we know if this will be pro (NBA level) players or street ball legends of some sort? Maybe creating a whole new genre of pro basketball, 3 on 3 street ball style like beach volleyball?

Fultz
Kawhi
Cousins
;)
Swap Fultz for Lebron, and that's my team.
You can't play 3v3 without an athletic big man, and while Cousins may be an iffy choice for 5v5, him and Lebron are pretty much the perfect 3v3 players...and Kawhi and his defense is the perfect choice to complement that duo, imo.

true. Sounds good on paper but lebron has said he isn't good at 3v3. Also he's probably gonna be busy with the 5v5 team

Lebron, Durant, Curry.

Anthony Davis
Kawhi Leonard
Kevin Durant
