Game Notes
The Celtics host the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2nd of 3 meetings this season.   The Celtics won the first meeting in Milwaukee on January 28 without both Avery Bradley and Al Horford.  They will meet one more time on April 12th in Boston.

The Bucks are playing in back to back games, winning 118-108 in Charlotte.  The Bucks are 7-10 on the second night of back to back games.   The Bucks have been playing very well, going 12-4 in the month of March. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games.   The Bucks have now moved into 5th in the East, half a game in front of the Hawks.

The Celtics have won their last 3 games against the Bucks and 5 of the last 6.   The Celtics are 8-2 in their lasts 10 games.  The Celtics are 27-9 at home.  They have won 7 straight and 14 of the last 15 at home.  They have won 11 of the last 12 against playoff teams.

Jonas Jerebko left practice on Tuesday with a knee injury and is listed as questionable for this game.  They will miss his versatile defense if he can't play.  For the Bucks, Michael Beasley (knee),  John Henson (thumb), and Jabari Parker (knee) are all expected to miss this game.

Standings Reset
The Celtics have forged ahead of the Cavaliers by half a game to take sole possession of first place.  Washington and Toronto keep winning and Washington is 2.5 games back while Toronto is 3 games back.  Milwaukee has jumped half a game in front of Atlanta and is 10 games out of first place.
Games to Watch:  3/28  Wizards at Lakers (10:30)
3/29  Hawks at Sixers,  Hornets at Raptors,  Wizards at Clippers
3/30   Cavaliers at Bulls

Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/amir_johnson.jpg) vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/giannis_antetokounmpo.jpg)
Antetokounmpo, aka the Greek Freak, is like no other player in the league.  He is 6'11" tall and very athletic.  He is averaging 23.1 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists.  He often brings the ball up the court and acts as they point guard as well.   He will be a huge challenge on both ends of the court.  In the first meeting, he finished with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/jae_crowder.jpg)  vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/khris_middleton.jpg)
Jae Crowder vs Khris Middleton
Middleton is finally hitting his stride after being out with a ruptured hamstring earlier in the season.  He is averaging 14.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game.  He is shooting 44.3% from beyond the arc and 46% from the field so if Jae leaves him open, he will more than likely have a big game.

Honorable Mention
Kelly Olynyk vs Greg Monroe
Monroe is a former starter coming off the bench and will be a challenge for Kelly (or Jonas or whoever) to guard.  He is averaging 11.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists off the bench.  In the first meeting between these two teams he finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Keys to the Game
Defense - Defense is always a key to winning.   So far this season it seems as though the defense of the Celtics has been up and down.  They are beginning to show their defensive mettle though as they head down the home stretch.  They have had one of the best defenses in the league since the All Star break and they have the top rated defense in the 4th quarter.  They must come out with a defensive mindset and make that their priority.

Run! - The Celtics are very effective when they run on every possession and run on defense as well.  They need to run on offense to get easy shots before the defenses get set up. They also need to run on defense to get set up to prevent the Bucks from getting easy baskets.   With the Bucks playing back to back,  if the Celtics can have more energy to keep up the pace,  they may be able to wear the Bucks out.

Take Care of the Ball - The Bucks are very long and athletic.  The Celtics need to make careful passes and take care not to allow the Bucks to force turnovers.  This also includes hitting their shots and making the extra pass to find the open man.  In their 4 game winning streak, they have averaged 16.5 turnovers for 22.8 points.  They have to tighten that up and take better care of the ball.

Rebound - The Celtics can't score if they don't have the ball. As was said, the Bucks are long and athletic and so the Celtics are going to have to work to win the battle of the boards.  It takes effort to rebound and when the Celtics put out that extra effort to get rebounds, it usually translates to other areas of their game.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team from start to finish.  They have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and on defense and going to the basket and grabbing rebounds.  The more aggressive team usually gets the benefit of the calls also.  They need to be the team that wants it more for all 48 minutes.  No let up.

X-Factors

Fatigue vs Rest - The Celtics have been off since Sunday and so should be rested.  The Bucks played in Charlotte and had to travel afterwards.  Hopefully the Celtics can play with more energy and wear them out.

Focus and Motivation -  With the Celtics in first place, it's hard to picture them losing focus in a very winnable game.  The Bucks are fighting to stay in 5th place and so they are going to be motivated to stay there.   The Celtics need to draw energy from the home crowd and keep their focus on playing their game.  There are no easy opponents and the Celtics need to play like it.

Officiating - The officiating is always an x-factor. Whether because of the tendencies of individual refs, or an agenda on behalf of the refs or the league, each game is officiated differently and that can favor or throw a team off on any given night.  The Celtics have to be able to shake off bad calls and just play their game.

Middleton makes them a much better team.

We ll need a healthy energetic Bradley to offset Middleton .

This team is a hard out ,  we'll see if Celtics want to keep the 1st seed.

Milwaukee is a really bad matchup for us with their length and Giannis at the 4, which Horford can't hardly guard him at.

8 games until the playoffs, we're in sole possession of the first seed for the first time in roughly 8 years, and we're still regularly coming out flat in games... Not a great sign.

It's been a routine that i'm used to it.  The thing is we can't come out like this in the playoffs.  And it's what BS has been talking about.  We've played full 48 minutes only in handful of games.

Good freaking grief, sit the starters on the bench and put the bench in. They don't need to be playing if they're going to be this lackluster on the defensive end. Ridiculous that we're having this type of effort and game starts this late in the season still.

Smart's passing and D has really helped this first unit out of that early slump. 2 assists already and some good D on Brogdon.

Luckily, I don't see us playing Milwaukee in the first round, but I bet we'd play a ton of small ball against them with their stetch bigs, basically out of necessity to guard them. This is why I thought the Bucks were one of our worst potential first round matchups. Their length really bothers our smaller guards, and Giannis is a walking mismatch.

So if Milwaukee would fall or we would happen to meet them in the second round, who would you start?

I think I'd primarily play small and slip Brown into the starting lineup in place of Amir. I think you have a much better chance of matching up with them defensively with a lineup of IT, AB, Brown, Crowder, and Horford than with Amir, along with giving you better overall spacing.

I'd then essentially only play three bigs in Al, Amir, and KO and use a lot of smaller lineups with IT, AB, Smart, Brown, and Crowder all getting bigger minutes to support this small ball.

Teams are going to playing us hard because our record demands it.  If we can't match their intensity then i won't be surprised if we drop down in seeding before the end of the season.

He's a rookie on the number one seed in the East with the 8th best offense and a top-5 offensive player in the league on his team. That's going to happen. It's happens to a lot of rookies on good teams like this. I'm as big of a Jaylen fan as anyone, but he has to assert himself more if he wants the ball more. That's just how it works in the NBA, especially for young guys.

So, let me get this straight:

The ref incorrectly calls a foul call on Smart;

Smart calls him out on it and is hit with a technical foul;

Then they have the balls to go back and be like "Oh, you were right, it wasn't a foul on you."

The incompetence of NBA officiating, folks. It's just so ridiculous. No rational person calls a foul on Smart there, especially since he tipped the ball in the first place and Middleton was the one coming forward.

We're not in this game without IT's scoring, but he has to rein in his TOs. He had like 7 the other night, and he already has 3 TOs tonight. That's going to be big for us in the playoffs. We can't give up extra possessions to the opponent like that.

Our number one priority this summer has to be to get a secondary scorer, especially since we'll probably not have AB's services next year. We rely on IT's scoring way too much for a number one seed. One of Hayward or Griffin would be nice, along with Fultz off the bench.  ;)

If Parker wouldn't have got injured, I really would've loved to see a Parker for AB swap. A Brogdon, AB, Middleton, Giannis, Maker lineup is really athletic, and AB adds needed shooting to the lineup, along with great perimeter D.

Is that from the play where Terry stripped Smart? Odd choice by the official scorer (similar to Smart's late-game steal last week)

Olynyk is literally an 0'fer across the board with a -14 +/-, yet he continues to play. Rozier at least has an assist and is only a -4, though he hasn't played nearly as much.

Rozier is simply unplayable because his BBIQ is so bad. He follows up a good play with a terrible, rushed 3.

Zeller just got away with a walk there, which makes up for just one of the dozen terrible calls we've got tonight, including two bogus charge calls on Crowder and Smart.

We know how to close, they don't.

This kind of situation is exactly how the Celtics may end up losing games in the playoffs, where margin of error is less. C's need to start holding leads better, and in cases like this, someone other than IT has to actually step up and score (paging Horford and Bradley).

A ref is gonna get hurt someday because of this stuff and nobody is gonna feel sorry for them.

I crap on IT's D at times, but at least him and Smart have the attitude that exemplifies Celtics basketball. They're not afraid of anyone, and they'll do anything to win the game, including hit big shots and put their bodies on the line for the W.

Absolutely terrible loss. This is what they get for being effing entitled and not coming out to play at the beginning.

In a lot of ways, I'm just ready to be done with this season. This team is so infuriating. Other than a select few players, they think they're much better than what they are, and every single time they lose that chip on their shoulder, they play terribly.

Just a terrible, terrible loss and really shows where this team is at. It's not the best team in the East, not when it can't even put together 48 straight minutes of hard work, intensity, and solid play 7 games before the playoffs.

Brogdon was defended well in that last aequence. Plus avery didnt play for almost a week so he is a bit ruaty.

What will Brad draw up?

I'm betting on IT as a decoy and Smart or AB taking the shot (probably AB after a screen by Al)

If Smart takes the final shot, Stevens should be fired on the spot.

Wow. Smart DID take the last shot. Please tell me it was a broken play and he had no choice.
yeah inbound pass (by smart) got batted away and Smart caught it and had to throw it up.

stupidly he tried to leap back into a defender and draw a foul rather than just hit the three.

looked pretty broken.  IT bobbled the pass, punched it to Smart who took a rushed but awful shot.  tried for contact but should have tried to make the bucket

Or, you chalk it up to the fact that "it's basketball" and that losses can happen and you move on?

I had a bad stream, but was Bradley not wide open for a corner 3?

Broken play, Giannis got his long arms on the inbound pass, deflected it, there was a bit of a scramble, and Smart ended up with it with chance at a heave from well beyond the line. He did try to get fouled on the shot, which threw him off. But it was very unlikely to go in no matter what.

Definitely not as good as their record. They let their foot off the gas every time things start to go really well. Playing their hearts out against GS doesn't mean much when they turn around and coast to losses against the Bucks and Nuggets.

People need to stop overrating this team so you can be prepared for what's about to happen in the playoffs. Most of these players won't be around in a few years they will be used for trades. Ainge and Stevens are doing a masterful job playing up these players that are nothing but role players. They will be used as chips in trades. The team is a 5"8 superstar with a bunch of role players do people really think they are going to go on a run in the playoffs?

When you come out the way we came out tonight, which is the way we've come out against teams all season, you deserve the L.

Number 1 seed and they blew it.  This was their chance to prove they earned and deserve that spot and it wasn't due to some unfotunate situation with other teams that put them there and they still couldn't pull it off.

If they need some kind of prophesy, this is how tough and gritty every team will play us come playoffs.  It's up to us to take it to another level as well.  But i've been on Brad Stevens on this one that we're not as good as our record.

You can't keep playing catchup in games and expect to win.

Yep. And Brad has been saying this exact thing for like a month now.

We're simply not good or talented enough to not play with that chip on our shoulder. Hopefully we can "turn it on" in the playoffs, but I'm just confident in that if we can't do it 7 games before the playoffs even start.

This team ain't winning any championships for sure this season even with the #1 seed, but it's good to see them thrive from last year to this year. Plus, we got the Brooklyn pick.

C's haven't gotten past the first-round since 2012, so we've yet to see how capable they are in the postseason.

team coasted early on and it bit them in the butt.  on top of that:
Crowder: 4-12
Smart: 4-15 (although some were end of clock/quarter heaves)
AB: 5-14.
Can't have that many players taking double-digit shots laying bricks.

Also:
Brown: 13 minutes --  -21
KO: 7 minutes --  -16
Young: 5 minues --  -12
that group of players killed us on the court in a very short amount of time.

That, and a lack of players being kept in their proper roles.  Smart was 1-7 from three and, yeah, Bradley and Crowder sucked from three as well but that's just a bad night.  Smart is just a bad three point shooter.  If he's shooting 7 threes it means he and the rest of the team are not playing the right way on offense.

And, of course, letting a team shoot 52% from the field will also usually get you beat.

Um, Milwaukee just did tonight. Miami does every game. That's why those teams are so successful right now. It literally happens all of the time.

I keep hearing this same excuse, but did people not watch us the last two years? We don't play with half of the intensity that we did in the past two years, and it leads to terrible losses like this.

Disappointing loss, but as others have mentioned, we aren't your typical 1-seed. In fact, if we do end the season with the best record in the EC, we might be the worse (or most flawed) 1-seed of all time. This is a great bunch of players who have an incredible cohesiveness, but the top-level talent just isn't there.

I recommend just sitting back and watching what this team can do. We should absolutely make it to the 2nd round and have a great chance at knocking off Washington, but it would be unfair to expect anything more out of this current group.

IT, Horford, Johnson and Crowder have been playing really well.  If you look at the past few games they get in trouble when the bench doesn't produce.  Olynyk has been terrible for a few games now, Rozier has struggled, Brown has for the most part hit a wall, and Jerebko looks like he's fallen out of favor.

A loss that exposes this Celtic team. Other than Thomas, the shooting percentages were terrible.

Kelly was MIA, Green got zero minutes, Marcus went 3 for 15. Add in Crowder and AB being less than mediocre, and you can see why they lost.

Rookie guard on the Bucks had a nice fourth quarter.

Smart shot 18% from 3 in the month of March 11/60

Smart is a very good role player that plays great defense and has a knack for making certain plays at certain times. He will never be a very good offensive player let alone a great one. His ceiling is a Bruce Bowen San Antonio years. Great defender who developed a good 3 point shot. That's what I see Smart as at some point. He's an atrocious shooter currently so he even has some work to do to get to Bruce Bowen level.

Eh, while it might be different now without Gibson and Wade playing, Chicago has actually matched up very well with this Cavs team since James has come back. I think they're like 3-0 against them this season, though at least one of those was a rest game for Lebron and company.

With how Cleveland is playing right now, it's not a guarantee that they beat Chicago in Chicago.

More lack of clock awareness/loss of composure due to the broken play.

This might have been a game where the length and higher release of Green and Jerebko might have helped, at least more than Young, who actually checked into a close NBA game. Their length bothered our shooting.

This might have been a game where the length and higher release of Green and Jerebko might have helped, at least more than Young, who actually checked into a close NBA game. Their length bothered our shooting.
yeah, if Im blaming Smart on that last play, Im blaming his inability to get the ball in to IT or trying to draw a foul instead of just going for the shot.

hard to blame a guy for not making that pass.

Why do you say that?  He gets crunch time mins because he generally makes smart, winning plays.  I'd blame him for not making the right pass, if AB was wide open.

What will Brad draw up?

I'm betting on IT as a decoy and Smart or AB taking the shot (probably AB after a screen by Al)

If Smart takes the final shot, Stevens should be fired on the spot.

I re-wound it and he had PLENTY of time to hit a WIDE OPEN Avery in the corner for a tying three!!!  How did he NOT see him???  Hero ball???????

Just caught the replay and Smart landed with around 2.8 seconds left and immediately went for the shot.

Middleton left Bradley in the corner to go contest.

The better play would have been to pass the ball to Bradley, but I certainly dont think its egregious for a player to catch the ball in a broken play with under 3 seconds left in the game and assume he has to shoot it.

Ive got a bigger problem with his inability to get the ball to Thomas on the inbound.

Olynyk was a huge turd once again.

Refs treat Greek Freak like he's MJ

Bucks are better than their record...C's are worse than their record.
I dont think we are.

Id say we are just about right what our record says.

I missed a lot and could barely see that last play, but yeah, we're probably nitpicking anyway.  Rest of the thread reads like we came out flat and never corrected for it.  Oh well.  As long as we make it out of the 1st round this year, we'll be fine.

I was going to watch the game, but I think I'll just press delete on the DVR.

I'm guessing Milwaukee's length really bothered the C's.

For what, the seven minutes he was on the court?  Gimme a break!

I feel for IT.
The man is consistent. It must be very frustrating to lose a game like that.

Smart got owned by the refs tonight. The charge when the guys foot was in restricted area. The technical foul when all he did was stop Giannis from hitting him in the face with his shoe.

So crap.

Yes. Consistent in offense and consistently owned in defense.

Ulis, Teague, Brogdon... Every opponent PG doubles his PPG average against us. This is as terrible as fantastic are IT's 29 PPG.

it did some.   But the refs had it in for Marcus.  We just did not play with fire or well.  Their bench owned ours, we had like two players show up.  We are going to have off nights, I wonder if rising to first place went to our heads.

I didn't watch the game and I can't see it on the replay, did Brogdon dribble the ball over his shoulder on that last shot play vs AB. I am not sure, did Marcus tipped it on that dig? If not it is a missed call. Not looking for an excuse for our loss, just curious.

That's why they took his personal away (I'm not even sure this conformed with the rules for video review), and gave him a bogus Flagrant-1 so as not to toss him? The refs didn't have it in for anyone, they just had a bad night for the most part.

He made many mistakes as well.  I wouldn't absorp him of blame because he had the most points.  His terrible defense alone, especially in the first half, is enough to lump him up as one of the reasons we lost.

Marcus did not look happy with them at all.  Its partly the way he plays, he flops and pushes the envelope.   When a close call can go either way and you have that rep, you can bet a lot will go against you.
