Game Notes
The second place Celtics host the East leading Cavaliers for the 3rd of 4 meetings this season.  The Cavaliers are 2-0 after winning 128-122 on 11/3/16 and 124-118 on 12/29 with both games in Cleveland.  They will face off one final time on April 5 in Boston.

The Cavaliers are 8-2 in their last 10 games and are coming off a win over the Bucks on Monday.  They are looking to win their second straight game.  The Celtics are 6-4 in their last 10 and are coming off a loss to the Hawks.  They have lost 3 of the 4 games they have played since the All Star Break.  The Cavs are 15-11 on the road while the Celtics are 20-9 at home.

The Celtics stood pat at the trade deadline and have not made a move to pick up any of the players who have been waived and they still haven't addressed their need for more rebounding or a consistent scorer to help Isaiah.  There are still a few players available who may be able to help but Danny has said that he's happy with the team as constituted.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, have greatly improved through a trade and free agent signings.  They traded for Kyle Korver to address the need for more scoring off the bench with JR Smith out.  They also signed Deron Williams, who will debut in this game, to address their need for a playmaker off the bench.  And Andrew Bogut has committed to sign with them as well.

Avery Bradley returned to the starting lineup against the Hawks,  but the Celtics didn't seem to get a boost from it as they lost to the struggling Hawks 114-98.  He was on a minutes restriction and will be eased back to playing a bit at a time and so will more than likely be limited in this game as well.   Gerald Green will miss the game with a heel injury.

JR Smith (thumb) and Kevin Love (knee) will both be out for the Cavaliers, but they didn't sit around worrying about how to fill in for them.  They traded for Kyle Korver to make up for Smith's scoring.  Korver  is 2nd in the league in 3 point % at 45.5%.  He is shooting 51% in 22 games for the Caves since the trade.  In February he averaged 15.5 points on 60.4% shooting from the field and 58.9% from beyond the arc.  Now, with a 3 time All Star in Deron Williams leading their bench,  he should be even better.

Standings Reset
The Celtics need a win in this game to keep pace with the improved Wizards and Raptors.  The Wizards beat the Warriors on Tuesday to come to just 2 games behind the Celtics.  The Raptors are also just 2 games behind the Celtics and host the Wizards on Wednesday.  The Hawks are 4.5 games behind the Celtics and are hosting the Mavericks.  The Celtics are 4 games back of the Cavs.

Key Matchups
(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/203109.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/lebron_james.png)
Jae Crowder vs LeBron James
James is averaging 25.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 8.9 assists and shooting 54% from the field.   Jae has been effective against LeBron in the past and hopefully he can slow him down in this game.  In 44 regular season games vs the Celtics, James has averaged 29.5 points, his highest average against any team.  He scored 30 points in the first meeting between these two teams and 23 in their second meeting.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/202738.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/kyrie_irving.png)
Isaiah Thomas vs Kyrie Irving
Irving is averaging 24.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists  In the first two games against the Celtics he averaged 29 points and 10 rebounds.  The Cavs have so many weapons it will be tough to stop them all but Irving is one of the key players to try to slow down.

Honorable Mention
Marcus Smart vs Deron Williams
Williams is expected to make his Cavaliers debut in this game.   He is averaging 13.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 6.9 assists this season for the Mavericks.  The Cavaliers bench becomes much more dangerous with a starting caliber guard leading the offense.  Marcus needs to make sure that Deron's debut isn't a rousing success for the Cavs.

Keys to the Game
Defense Defense Defense!! Defense is key to winning every game.  The Celtics must concentrate on getting stops and keeping the Cavaliers from scoring at will.  The Cavs are 3rd in the league in scoring, averaging 111.1 points per game. The Celtics average 108.0 points per game and so they must play lock down defense and keep the hot shooting Cavs from scoring at will.

Rebound - The Celtics can't score if they don't have the ball. They must crash the boards as a team to prevent the Cavs from getting second chance and fast break points.  They also need to rebound to give themselves extra possessions and to fuel their running game. The Cavs are averaging 44.0 rebounds to 41.2 rebounds for the Celtics.  Against the Pistons, the Celtics proved that when they gang rebound as a team, they can win the rebounding battle.  They have to do that every game if they want to win.

Run, Run, Run - The Celtics need to run on every possession in order to get some easy points before the Cavs defense sets up.  When the Celtics walk the ball up and slow the game down they struggle.  They have to run and they have to move the ball.  The Cavs are a good defensive team and so the Celtics need to try to beat their defense up the court.

Be Aggressive  -  The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to beat the Cavs to every loose ball and win the 50/50 plays.  They have to be aggressive on the boards and in driving into the paint and to the basket.  They have to be the team that works harder and the team that wants it more.   They allowed the Hawks to play harder than them and the results weren't good.  The Celtics have to be the team that plays harder in every game.

Stay Focused - The Celtics were careless with the ball against the Hawks to the tune of  18 turnovers.  They have to be more careful and focus on making crisp passes and stay focused when dribbling and not allow the Cavs to intercept their passes or steal the ball off the dribble.  The Celtics must stay focused and not get sloppy with the ball.

X-Factors
Motivation -  The Celtics currently have a tenuous hold on the second seed in the East but there are 3 teams who could very easily overtake them.  They have to be motivated to play their best if they hope to keep home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.  Danny kept the team together and that should be motivation for them to play as one and to get back to their one against the world attitude they had last season.

Officiating - As always, the officiating is an x-factor. Every crew officiates differently and teams never know what to expect. Sometimes they let them play and other times they call a foul on every possession. Some games they call evenly and others they favor one team or the other. It's like Forrest Gump's box of chocolate... you never know what you are going to get. In most games against the Cavs, however, the Cavs seem to get the benefit of way too many calls. The Celtics must play through it and not let the officials take them out of the game.

Kind of ironic that with the Bogut drama fresh that we play his new team.

That should make our win all the sweeter.

go Cs!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Celtics!

Thanks for the hard work, and everything you do!

TP!

Lets win this one.

It'll be a easy one. Isaiah Thomas will score 41, and Smart will grab the winning rebound, and get the and one with the crucial free throw to end the game.

I'm calling it how it is!

Going to be a really important game for us to try and take. Toronto plays Washington tomorrow, so if we lose, then the winner of that game will only be a game behind us in the standings. At least a win would guarantee some separation from one of those two teams and keeping the status quo with the other.

TP for the info.  Bad timing for this one.  Hope to see a lot of Jaylen out there, he played really well against them earlier in the season.

I don't want LeBron to play but for a different reason:  He could give strep to our players.

Actually expect this game to stay close with Love out.  TT will kill us on the boards, as usual, however, and after coasting most of the game LeBron wills them to a win at the end............or, they come out and totally trash us, with a "putting us in our place" statement!  Either way a loss, as this season slowly starts circling the drain.  As well as a large number of us fans feel, I believe the team also feels DA has left them for dead by not getting them some kind of help!

I actually think the opposite will happen. The Celtics will come out with a sense of urgency that imo lacked last game. There offense will be more crasp and for this game the Celtics will want the game more than the Cavs.

I got a Celtics win tonight.

This has been his game plan for past several years .  Kinda watch 1 st quarter ,  warm up second quarter,  start asserting himself during the third .   Play full out as much as needed to secure the game the last 12 minutes . He drives to hoop and gets ALL the calls his way .....game over for the opponent.   It's the same rerun every game.

Over/Under on how many MORE rebounds the Cavs grab than the Celtics?

25? 20?

Probably will be another one of those games where they out rebound us by a big margin.

We only lost by less than 8 on both occasions though so hopefully we can get it done tonight.

No Love definitely helps a bit.

This will be like  a scrimmage for the Cavs. We will play hard and be in it for 2-1/2 quarters and then LeBron & Kyrie will take over. We added nothing to help against a team that we can't beat.

Combine it with triple teaming IT and out rebounding the C's by 20, and yeah this could be a blowout.

Horford seriously needs to step up. Hopefully Bradley and Brown can contribute well also.

Sad but true you could see it watch us come out on fire hitting everything and build up a nice lead. We win the rebound battle early Al/Amir snagging everything. Good energy. Then the Cavs pick up their intensity and we completely fall apart. The threes stop falling and we continue to jack them. Our old bigs get tired and killed on the glass eventually. We get it within 10 at some point then the lead balloons back to 19.. Olynyk a no show. Al 4/12 with 11 points. IT smothered into a terrible night. Jaylen Brown with a couple nice dunks and defensive plays. Panic ensues on the forums.

I hope I'm wrong but I've seen this story before LOL

If it wasn't for how we've played since the All-Star Break, I would say that we have a good chance of beating the Cavs this game. No Love; we're fully healthy; and at home? But I'm less confident with how we've played lately. I give it a 50/50 shot, depending upon how IT and Al plays and how "up" our guys are for this big game. We really need it.

Getting AB's shooting back is going to be so huge for us.

Once he gets the chemistry with that first unit back, we're going to be so much better, especially with Smart and Brown breaking out in the second unit!

Both smart and brown have looked very good against starters, against second units they should flourish.
I really expect come playoff time the c's should be able to wear teams down, our first squad is good and our second unit nearly as good.  Come fourth quarter that should matter.

DWill's size might create some bad, bad matchups for us in the playoffs. If they play Kyrie, Dwill, Shump, Lebron, Love, then that's a really hard lineup for us to defend with IT in there. They'd just iso Kyrie on IT all day long, and you couldn't really help off due to how good their shooting is elsewhere.

When AB is back to full stength and Green gets back, Rozier better be riding the bench. He clearly just does not help us out there. Only like once every dozen games or so does he actually make a positive impact out there. Otherwise, he's a major hole defensively, and his offense/shot is spotty, compounded by a very low BBIQ and a bad iso style of playmaking.

Got to keep taking advantage of Smart on Kyrie down low posting up. If they double, then kick it out to one of our shooters. Smart is great at that.

That's one of the few issues with starting AB instead of Smart or Brown - there's no post up opportunities like that.

If healthy, they're better than they were last year. I'd still take GSW over them, but it's close enough that if Durant is only at 75% or so I'd bet on Cleveland winning

Beginning to understand LBJ's frustration with CLE management.  No one there appeared to have tissues ready for him after that foul call.

Probably gotta be a wet wipe!

Watching this game p---es me off more that Ainge didn't make any moves. How much better would it be to see Ibaka out there instead of soft Kelly? Would have helped this team big time and they didn't have to sacrifice much to get him.

He hasn't done much in the past few minutes because Brad wasn't playing him

Is it me, or is LeBron shying away from lesser talent thats guarding him. He's settled for jumpers at least 3 times against KO, and a couple on Brown, and then when Brown got down on D and clapped his hands LeBron deferred.

You'd think his mouth would be watering having KO or a rookie on him.

This whole game is disjointed because of the 3 clowns reffing.

They read the league memo. Their doing exactly commissioner  Lebron wants them to do.

Huh? Those last two plays just proved my point many of us have been saying all along - don't force it up at the rim. Kick it out on penetration.

IT takes good shots that aren't forced, they go in and we go up.

IT drives and kicks out to the open guy when they collapse, we get good shots that go in.

IT plays hero ball and forces possessions, they don't go in and we lose.

Funny how that works. Keep up the smart play, IT!

Smart, AB, and Jae all did their things, too.

Great needed win. The addition of AB is going to be so huge for us down the stretch.

Yep, and that's what defense is all about. It's not about always getting the steal or the block. It's about making things difficult for the opponent.

AB and Smart, and to a lesser extent Jae, are some of the absolute best at making things difficult for the opponent with smart, sound defense. AB's is the classic "ball hawk" that just absolutely drains you when you face him.

absolutely great D by AB on that last play.  great team D by the rest of the guys as well, running down LBJ trying to bury the game winning 3.   we got a bit lucky on the missed 3 by d will but who cares, great win!

D Will shot 2-8. That's the the guy you want taking the last shot.

I fear thy the additions of Bogut, Love, and JR will put our slim chances out of reach; however, we have a very resilient team and it's not like the Williams' didn't play great tonight.

Normally, I'd guess Ainge would trade his grandma if it served him.  But Bradley is special.  Stevens said, without hesitation, AB is our starting SG.  i.e. it doesn't matter what anyone does over the course of 15 games while he's hurt.  He's part of our culture.  He's been the hardest working guy over the course of 7 years.

Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else.  Especially the first one.  He basically took a straight on full speed tackle from a huge mofo in Derrick Williams.  That seriously had to hurt.  Definition of taking one for the team.

One good thing a matchup with Cleveland does for us is it allows us to play small a significant portion of the time.

When they go to that small Kyrie, DWill/Smith, Korver/Shump, Lebron, Love lineup, we can actually counter with a lineup of IT, AB, Smart/Brown, Crowder, and Horford.

They can only play 5 guys at a time and depth is overrated in the playoffs as coaches usually go 8 deep in crucial games so even if they add all them players its still just the 5 on the court that will give you the victory

I'm starting to doubt bit by bit if we should actually trade him. Dude played well tonight while being passive. I can't imagine what he can do when he has free reigns.

Never trade Jaylen or Marcus unless it's for an a Anthony Davis level player and there's like 5 of those in the NBA.

What a disgusting human being. Nothing but passive-aggressive comments, left-handed compliments. No class at all.

And eager for excuses - which his media toadies eagerly feed him.

Great win for the C's. Everyone stepped up. AB on one-on-one defense is spectacular. I have to say that the rookie impresses me more and more each game. I think he will be a beast next year. Kelly was playing some decent defense tonight also. I can go on an on about all the individual great games for each of them and what a team victory. They needed this and this could be what they needed to ignite the 2nd half stretch run.

I wasn't high on Jaylen at the draft, but he's made a believer out of me. Smart, as well. Unless Danny's presented with a deal that no one in his right mind would refuse, I'd like him to hang onto those two.

Tonight's game was fantastic, a HUGE win. With about 3.5 minutes left, I was prepping to blame some bad calls and noncalls for a Celtics loss—most notably Horford's alleged out-of-bounds turnover, and LeBron's pushoff against Crowder to grab an offensive rebound—but the Cs came up with some great plays down the stretch:

Great work by Boston.

You know, I used to live in the game threads years ago. There was just nothing like watching the game while talking the game in the game threads. But as the Celtics started to get old during the Big 3 era, the game threads started getting nasty because a very negative set of characters came in and just loved antagonizing those trying to cheer on the team. I stop participating in the game threads because of it. It just wasn't enjoyable anymore.

But one thing I loved was when the Celtic won, especially big wins against good teams, those negative participants in the threads disappeared at the end of the threads. They could never hang around and congratulate the team. They could never post positive stuff about the players they always harrassed. God forbid they ever say that Doc ever made a good move to help win the game. They just disappeared and reappeared the next game ready to spread their dissatisfaction.

So this year I haven't been participating in these game threads but I have read them. What I have seen is that not much has changed. Oh there is a new set of antagonists but things just haven't changed. Big win tonight and I see the usual 2 or 3 guys spouting off negativity have disappeared and aren't here celebrating over the win.

The more things change....the more they stay the same. WTG Celtics. Best game of the year. Loved watching it.

Crowder, Horford, Bradley, Brown, even Jerebko made big plays down the stretch and IT adapted to the defense to kick out for 3s and draw FTs instead of getting overaggressive toward the rim. Brilliant stuff.

This is true. The game tonight was too close all night for any total negative rants about how the Celtics should made a change and this team has no future etc. We are second in the East and have a top 4 pick in the next two drafts, how anyone can spin this as bad is beyond me. I love this team and tonight was special!

On one play in the last minute or so, IT kept dribbling around, fighting against a double team and looking for an opening, then he managed to shake loose and get into the paint and the defense collapsed on him, so he kicked it out to Bradley I think, who hit a 3. To me, that was a brilliant play by IT; it seemed like he knew that if he could get into the paint, the D would collapse and someone would be wide open, and he was right.

I agree with you nick. I see threads where there is so much negativity and anger....and the celticsare winning.

What fun is that? Even wins are turned into pools of anger and accusations. I join. The game threads less nowadays.

It is almost as if some. Posters are afraid to be supportive or positive for fear of disappointment.

But. You are always welcome to be positive here.  ;D and a tp to cheer you up.

TP as usual Nick, what I've been saying lately.

Yeah, an echo chamber is clearly better to protect fragile feelings.  ::)

I don't know if Nick was referring to me as one of these "negative" posters or not, though I assume he was since I'm one of the more vocal posters in the game threads, and I don't really care. This is ultimately just a game that we all enjoy watching and discussing about on this blog. None of this ultimately matters in the grand scheme of things.

But what I've noticed though lately on this blog is that you cannot criticize this team, coach, or management/ownership this season without someone jumping down your throat labeling you as a "pessimist" or a "hater" or a "negative character," just because you have have a different opinion than them and disagree with something that was done by the team or player. These people need to grow up and stop being so dang sensitive and overprotective about their own opinions and favorite players/teams. Everything isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and even your favorite people err at times.

IT is a legit MVP candidate this year, and he's been beyond excellent offensively for us this year. However, the last half dozen games or so he's played selfishly and with bad decision-making, and he's been a pretty consistent poor defender his entire  Celtics career. It does not make you a "pessimist" or a "hater" to criticize him when he plays like this or plays bad defense. As long you give him his due praise when he deserves it, then it's totally fair for you to criticize him when he deserves it, and the same is true about all of the other players, Brad, and Danny, too. It just makes you a biased homer if you think you can only praise our players and not criticize them when they do things they shouldn't do.

I feel like I am fair in my criticisms, because I give our players, coach, and GM their due praise when they deserve it. Look at tonight and IT. When he forced possessions, didn't play through the offense and trust his teammates, or played bad defense, I criticized him for it and said he needs to be better. But I was also the first to praise him as soon as he did the right things, too, like the last half of the fourth quarter when he started penetrating and kicking to the open guy instead of forcing up bad shots, which he hasn't been doing the last several games.

And I think there are several other posters here who do the same things and are similarly justified doing so, yet many of us who dare to even justifiably criticize certain things about the players, coach, management, or team's play are still lumped in with those posters whose sole goal is to be negative on here (we all know who I'm talking about). Some of you need to stop being so sensitive and realize that people can have different opinions on the team and players than you, and that's okay. As long as you're fair in both your criticisms and praise, there's nothing wrong with holding players accountable.

That being said, I think I'm going to cut back posting on here, certainly the game threads, for awhile, because large portions of this blog have become toxic and major echo chambers that can't deal with anything but irrational optimism and blatant homerism about our players, team, and overall direction. It's just ridiculous having to defend yourself all of the time simply for having a contrary, critical opinion, even when you give out just as much praise to players as criticism. It doesn't make you a "hater" or "pessimist" or "someone who thinks they can coach or GM" better than Brad and Danny just because you disagree with one of their moves.

Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else.  Especially the first one.  He basically took a straight on full speed tackle from a huge mofo in Derrick Williams.  That seriously had to hurt.  Definition of taking one for the team.

We really need a statistic for "things that make a difference but don't show up in the box score." I'd love to see what Smart looks like there.

Actually no, jpotter, you aren't one of the people I had in mind. You praise as much as you critique and I don't think for an instant that you are doing it to simply spout off negativity and get a rise out of people. There are others I am refering to. Surely, you could probably hazard a guess as to who some of them are.

Are you actually reading the blog? Its ridden with negativity. "You cannot criticize"  ::) every little thing has been nitpicked around here.

Read your posts tonight. It goes like this.

1) Go back to smart in the post
2) Why arent we going to Smart in the post
3) Some Horford praise
4) IT is losing us the game
5) Why are we isolating IT
6) IT is forcing etc etc

Now tell me, if you are a fan trying to support your team and enjoy the game, and you see this, are you going to be happy?!

Also you call me a blatant homer? I for one do not believe we would beat the Cavs or the Raps in a series. I do not believe Smart will be an all-star despite how much I like him as a player. I do not believe Rozier should be in the rotation, or that Ainge should not have traded for Cousins. Or that Zeller received playing time today. Do I have to mention them 5x in a row?

I echoed nick's sentiments because it is what Ive said lately (go look at LarBrd farewell thread). You may not be one of those guys nick mentioned, but I called you out today because there was a stretch where you had nothing but negativity that you have to wonder if you are in the game thread or the "we shouldnt have traded for IT" thread.

Just getting back from the game.   Fun night at the Garden.  Pretty amazing action for most of the second half - especially the first 8 minutes or so of the 3rd and the last 6 off the 4th.  Kyrie was a treat to watch in person.

Lol that's clearly cherrypicking and an inaccurate representation. Let's not also forget to mention these praising posts, too:

Quote
Thereeeeeee you go, IT. Keep attacking Kyrie's D if he's going to do the same to you.

Quote
Yep. Shump is clearly bothering him [IT], but he's doing a pretty good job of picking his spots. We win more games that way than when he tries to hero ball too often.

Quote
IT got his groove back a bit, too.

Quote
LOOK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PENETRATE AND KICK INSTEAD OF FORCING CRAP UP, IT!

Keep up the great work and smart decision-making!!

Quote
IT takes good shots that aren't forced, they go in and we go up.

IT drives and kicks out to the open guy when they collapse, we get good shots that go in.

IT plays hero ball and forces possessions, they don't go in and we lose.

Funny how that works. Keep up the smart play, IT!

Quote
That was a good, open shot for him [IT] off the side dribble. No problem at all with that shot. That's pretty much what was drawn up. It was a bit long, but he has that range.

Quote
THAT'S A W, BABY!

Great play all around to get the win!!

IT played EXCELLENT, SMART basketball down the stretch, just like we need him to.

Al had a great all around game, even if he didn't score as much.

Smart, AB, and Jae all did their things, too.

Great needed win. The addition of AB is going to be so huge for us down the stretch.

Quote
Horford with the great pass and Brown with the finish!! One more score and he has the triple double!

Quote
AMAZING D by Bradley right there!

Quote
Boy, I love Brown. He makes rookie mistakes, but he's clearly a much better player already on both sides of the ball than he was at the start of the season. The sky is the limit with this kid. His intelligence has really helped him pick up things quickly.

Quote
FINALLY, BIG AL IS BACK!

Quote
Excellent D by KO and Smart there!

Quote
I repeat, Smart is so, so special.

Quote
AB and Smart, and to a lesser extent Jae, are some of the absolute best at making things difficult for the opponent with smart, sound defense. AB's is the classic "ball hawk" that just absolutely drains you when you face him.

Quote
Yep. Love AB. Perfect professional. Sucks that he's probably the odd man out right now

And there's at least 10 more positive/praise posts throughout the thread. So, yeah, not quite as negative as your cherrypicking makes it out to be, and clearly that post is hyperbole.

EDIT: Deleted the rest. Not worth arguing over. Just know that I don't intentionally try to be excessively critical of players, if that's how you or others perceive it. I love the C's and all of our players, and, strangely enough, I'm actually an unabashed optimist in my real life. So take that for what it's worth.

So what? Even your compliments to IT had criticisms attached to it. They stand out because of how overly complimentary are you with the other players. You make it sound like IT is having a miserable game.

TP as usual Nick, what I've been saying lately.

Good morning everyone!
Good win.

Smart is so freaking good at the game of basketball. Now that his offense has advanced past the "train wreck" category, he looks to be a phenomenal player.

The 2 charges were huge for this team, and on a few possessions he utterly shut down Kyrie, arguably the hardest guard to stay in front of in the league.

His progress as a complete basketball player has been a joy to watch, and I hope he is a celtic for life.

I think people should be free to express their positive  or negative thoughts on the game and team as they see fit.  The problem is too many people take it as a direct attack on them or their family and can't separate themselves in the moment.  If all it takes is an anonymous poster to rile you up, I'd say you have a deeper issues  with obsession. People may not agree but if it's not a personal attack then the personal retaliation is completely uncalled for and I think those people are more of the problem of the board than anything else.  If it doesn't pertain directly to you or you can't respond without being vindictive yourself, there is always the option to just ignore And move along.

Good thoughts.... keep in mind haters are going to hate.   90% of the casual fans think they know how to run a team.  AKA Their team.......  Truth they don't have enough information to be serious, so I don't take them serious.    They have no clue....  But most want to see the Celtics win.

So its cool to be in here with the real 10% of level headed fans.    Those same people tend to be more intelligent, have a good job, family, life etc.  And for those people I love this Blog.  People I'd love to go to a game with...... Been coming here since 2004.    I didn't post a lot and must have 5 or six email accounts.

Anyone going to the PHX game this Sunday?

It's actually one of the forum rules too. I'm always shocked when people are allowed to attack!!!

Maybe we need a new sheriff in town. No one seems to moderate the game threads anymore.

Having said that, most are very respectful to each other.  :)

I think some of the strong disagreements between posters here are because this team is really in uncharted territory with having such a fast rebuild with a vet core, but still having a core of great prospects and picks. On top of that, our best vet player is 5'9. There is no precedence for this, nothing to really support arguments for the path the team should take, and its not even clear what the team is trying to really do. This will naturally bring up strong arguments on all ends.

There is nothing wrong with expressing criticism or support , that's what the forum is for, right? The problems come when people are too extreme on either end, and then take attacks on the team or on a certain path the team should take or on players or prospects personally. In line with this, there are also too many instances where people want praise for "being right " or "calling it". We all get things right and wrong in our predictions, that's not what this forum should be about. Who cares if a group of anonymous posters think you were right about a trad or prospect? What matters is if Ainge and the team management are right. If we all keep things in perspective and not lean to either extreme, we can have great discussions and learn a lot from the can other. We each bring different perspectives and different knowledge into this forum, we don't have to all agree but we can learn something from each perspective.

Macolm Gladwell- is that you?  Great post! TP

Advanced stats try to do exactly this, measure a players actual impact on winning.  VORP, BPM, Win Shares, RPM, all have their pluses and minuses.  RPM for instance, has Smart just behind IT in the point guard rankings.

Now comes the lovely West Coast Trips! (ugh)

Hopefully the C's can go 3-2 in that stretch. West Coast trips never easy.

Should beat Lakers, Suns, and one of Clippers/Nuggets.

But knowing how this season has gone, we'll probably lose to the Suns but beat the Warriors.

If it doesn't pertain directly to you or you can't respond without being vindictive yourself, there is always the option to just ignore And move along.
actually, that is not at all what nick is saying. he is referring a generalized activity, mood for the blog, not him being attacked as a person.

And that's why I frequently referenced people and not nick specifically

Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else.  Especially the first one.  He basically took a straight on full speed tackle from a huge mofo in Derrick Williams.  That seriously had to hurt.  Definition of taking one for the team.

We really need a statistic for "things that make a difference but don't show up in the box score." I'd love to see what Smart looks like there.

Every single one of these is a boxscore stat, so they measure things that do show up in the box score.

From my understanding, both BPM and RPM are outcome based and not on anything that shows up in the box score, except for +/-.  The others combine box score numbers with outcomes.  Feel free to enlighten me more, with specifics.

Fair enough , BPM/RPM use game flow info (i.e. you have to know who was on the floor when). But the only true quantifying of "things that don't show up in the box score" I think is done by the NBA's video analytics program, whatever its name was.

After rewatching some of the stretch plays from last night, I still don't like our chances vs Cleveland but I'd love an opportunity to see a healthy AB + Kyrie match up over a 7 game series.

I'd love to see that matchup too. I think Bradley could give Kyrie some serious fits over the course of a series.
