And a TP to csfansince60s for being the first to post in the game thread!!!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Celtics!
Going to be a really important game for us to try and take. Toronto plays Washington tomorrow, so if we lose, then the winner of that game will only be a game behind us in the standings. At least a win would guarantee some separation from one of those two teams and keeping the status quo with the other.
This game is going to be a blowout if LeBron James is playing. Thanks for the encouragement. :(
He played on Monday vs Bucks. so why wouldn't he play today? This game is going to be a blowout if LeBron James is playing. Thanks for the encouragement. :(
I don't want LeBron to play but for a different reason: He could give strep to our players.
tonight i can stay up late so im def watching
as usual, however, and after coasting most of the game LeBron wills them to a win at the end...........
as usual, however, and after coasting most of the game LeBron wills them to a win at the end...........
This has been his game plan for past several years . Kinda watch 1 st quarter , warm up second quarter, start asserting himself during the third . Play full out as much as needed to secure the game the last 12 minutes . He drives to hoop and gets ALL the calls his way .....game over for the opponent. It's the same rerun every game.
This will be like a scrimmage for the Cavs. We will play hard and be in it for 2-1/2 quarters and then LeBron & Kyrie will take over. We added nothing to help against a team that we can't beat.
AND they got double D-Wills ;D
Sad but true you could see it watch us come out on fire hitting everything and build up a nice lead. We win the rebound battle early Al/Amir snagging everything. Good energy. Then the Cavs pick up their intensity and we completely fall apart. The threes stop falling and we continue to jack them. Our old bigs get tired and killed on the glass eventually. We get it within 10 at some point then the lead balloons back to 19.. Olynyk a no show. Al 4/12 with 11 points. IT smothered into a terrible night. Jaylen Brown with a couple nice dunks and defensive plays. Panic ensues on the forums. This will be like a scrimmage for the Cavs. We will play hard and be in it for 2-1/2 quarters and then LeBron & Kyrie will take over. We added nothing to help against a team that we can't beat.
Combine it with triple teaming IT and out rebounding the C's by 20, and yeah this could be a blowout.
Horford seriously needs to step up. Hopefully Bradley and Brown can contribute well also.

But we can just put Kelly on him, right?
I feel good about our chances.
Ive got no idea why. But I feel good.

heard in here first.
Getting AB's shooting back is going to be so huge for us.Tp
Once he gets the chemistry with that first unit back, we're going to be so much better, especially with Smart and Brown breaking out in the second unit!
IT is really, really struggling with the long D on him by Shump. He can't get anything going. And hell, Shump is taking advantage of him on the other end, too.
Is AB on a minutes restriction tonight?
What is IT complaining about the ref?

smart covering shooters like korver makes no sense...

Seems like Smart's on Williams now with IT on Korver, makes more sense.
Anyone know what that call was against jaylen on that turnover....the ESPN guys suck at their jobstepped out of bounds.

DWill's size might create some bad, bad matchups for us in the playoffs. If they play Kyrie, Dwill, Shump, Lebron, Love, then that's a really hard lineup for us to defend with IT in there. They'd just iso Kyrie on IT all day long, and you couldn't really help off due to how good their shooting is elsewhere.
Here comes a Cavs run with Rozier in ::)
He already bricked 2 shots. Here comes a Cavs run with Rozier in ::)
Bet your thinking he ll jack up a mess of bricks
Extremely low BBIQ out there.
See even though the Cavs are the defending NBA champions they went out and got help
Rmener celtics fans Danny said we're gonna love rozier :o
Nobody would want to play in Cleveland if LeBron was not there .
Brown has to start taking g over
Did someone decide that IT doesn't get fouled anymore?
Did someone decide that IT doesn't get fouled anymore?
Been this way since the ASG
Rozier out = run madewe were doing well.
Im looking forward to this minutes restriction being lifted on AB so I no longer have to watch Terry Rozier play basketball.
You can tell Jaylen Brown is just deferring to these vets because he is a rookie. Once he gets that rookie tag off him and starts to come into his own. He is going to be something special.you are right.
Kelly doing work!
Jesus get brown involved!
Smart is probably my favorite Celtic
Does Jae Crowder ever make long twos?
Well, at least Horford is rebounding and playmaking tonight even if he isn't scoring.
Horford's really holding his own against Thompson on the boards.
It4 letting it come a bit more natural tonight.
Who is boxing out TT?

How about KO

Yes, but only when it's an attempted 3 with his foot on the line

well looked like a pretty hard elbow to the face

well that didn't go too bad. both teams had good moments.
once Love comes back for Cleveland, that roster is really really deep. Not sure they are even going to keep everyone in minutes once the playoffs hit. a lot of talented guys getting DNP's

1 point game? not bad.
I just realized that Cleveland's roster is a Who's Who of players who are past their prime: Korver, Frye, Deron Williams, Derek Williams, Jefferson, James, Jones, and now Bogut.

Derek Williams seemed to be pretty effective in the first half regardless of if he is his prime or not.

Derek Williams is NOT past his prime
He never had a prime ;D
IT got his groove back a bit, too.
Kyrie is schooling Bradley.
Irving is just too good.
I love travel calls in the NBA. I mean, how many times a game can you legitimately call them, yet they hardly ever happen?
You got to post Marcus with Kyrie in foul trouble.
Don't know how Ainge still has a job after watching us get destroyed on the boards for the last 6 YEARS
These effing refs are so incompetent. They don't even know what a box out is. So dumb.

I don't understand Brad's thinking with Rozier back in. He doesn't deserve the minutes and isn't ready for even a bench role at this time.

OMG BROWN AND ROZIER JUST HAVE NO FREAKING BBIQ AT ALL RIGHT NOW...
Why would they force that crap? This is why you have freaking Al or IT out there with this terrible bench!

It's called "player development." This is a high-leverage situation and is great experience for them.
And as Tommy noted, they are just barely missing. They will be good, and I'm sure they will enjoy proving the haters wrong.
Get this unit off the [dang] floor asap
IT IS CHOKINGThis whole game is disjointed because of the 3 clowns reffing.

Beginning to understand LBJ's frustration with CLE management. No one there appeared to have tissues ready for him after that foul call.
Be nice if al horford would show up
Jerebko is such a poor defender. Game in an out he gets toastedJerebko has been bad for a while now. Doesn't deserve the minutes he's getting.

Boston against the top four in the east struggle. Have to show they can beat these teamsThis one tonight is very winnable if they can just make some plays.
Screw the minute restrictions get Bradley in the game
Screw the minute restrictions get Bradley in the game
That's such a stupid take by Brown and Crowder. Don't force that crap. Set something up!
Horford's wife just tweeted 'Was wondering if anyone else has noticed that when Al rolls he gets zero looks or a super late pass.;

Horford with the great pass and Brown with the finish!! One more score and he has the triple double!
So any time a cav goes to the rim it is a foul...and another surprise -- gravity still works
When Lebron cleared out Jae how was that not a foul?
When Lebron cleared out Jae how was that not a foul?because its lebron
Why are we not going back to Smart in the post or PnR and just relying on freaking IT isos the entire time? Why does Brad allow IT to do this, especially now when he's clearly in a rut?

Thomas is clearly a scrub. let's trade him back for Marcus Thornton so you have nothing to complain about. ::)
Tommy's on the verge of a heart attack. I love that old ****.
Maybe one day Danny will get some rebounding
Maybe one day Danny will get some rebounding
Nobody but me still believes in rebounding.
"Don't force it," they said.
Bradley can't guard IrvingProbably the best in the league at it.
Bradley can't guard IrvingRefs won't let him.
Bradley can't guard Irving
Bradley can't guard Irving
"Don't force it," they said.
Huh? Those last two plays just proved my point many of us have been saying all along - don't force it up at the rim. Kick it out on penetration.
How the hell did IT get this cult-like following on here where you can't even criticize the guy for a bad play without being wrong?
Bradley can't guard Irving
Of course he can't when Kyrie have refs on his side.
good lord. a horrible shot from 5 feet beyond the arc and he hits it. unreal

That Korver shot there is why you need to have Bradley covering him. He's the only guy that can follow him over all the picks
Welcome back, AB. What a play.
Amazing win against a truly great team
I'm currently in a hotel in Tokyo, standing outside my room while the housekeepers finish up. I'm "watching" the game on ESPN Gamecast, which consists of scrolling texts telling me what happened.
The demure Japanese housekeepers are wondering why the gaijin is jumping up and down, screaming and pumping his fists.
Mike
Wow. That last sequence of AB guarding Irving was incredible.
Good win.
Smart is just great though.
Nobody guards Irving as well as Bradley. He'll have good scoring nights as he's a special offensive player, but Bradley makes him work and he's forced him into tough shooting nights in the past.
absolutely great D by AB on that last play. great team D by the rest of the guys as well, running down LBJ trying to bury the game winning 3. we got a bit lucky on the missed 3 by d will but who cares, great win!
Wow. That last sequence of AB guarding Irving was incredible.
It was unreal! We have the best defensive guards in the NBA.
Beating Lebron is always the best
Good win.
Smart is just great though.
I could watch Bradley retire in green. Along with Smart, Brown, Jerebko (who has been playing bad since the face mask), he is one of my favorite Cs. Glad we gave him a chance even though the fans were calling him a bust on his first season.
What a great game! Jaylen was great on Bron. Avery was insane on Irving. Smart had 2 drawn fouls in 2 positions in a row.
We were in it the entire game; keeping them close. We looked like we could hang, and they weren't taking it easy on us.
LETS GO C's!
Cavs were a little soft tonight... and Love wasn't even playing... I like it!!!
And LeBron... honestly looks a little slower this year than before
Just wait until the Celtics get Jackson. The defense will be incredible. ;DYipppieeeee

I thought so too. Maybe it was my imagination, but there were a few possessions where it looked like LeBron didn't want to drive the ball against him.
We beat Cavs and the refs. Nice !!!!
after , we're never out of the gameUntil Rozier enters

Glad we gave him a chance even though the fans were calling him a bust on his first season.Normally, I'd guess Ainge would trade his grandma if it served him. But Bradley is special. Stevens said, without hesitation, AB is our starting SG. i.e. it doesn't matter what anyone does over the course of 15 games while he's hurt. He's part of our culture. He's been the hardest working guy over the course of 7 years.

He only really went at Jaylen like one time that I remember.
A lot of things had to go right down the stretch, but I'll definitely take it. Great defense is wonderful to watch.
I fear thy the additions of Bogut, Love, and JR will put our slim chances out of reach; however, we have a very resilient team and it's not like the Williams' didn't play great tonight.
C's need to find a way to keep Brown on the floor, kid is really making a difference.
Always nice to get a scheduled win here and there, fellas. We'll be sitting pretty at 39-22. :D

Loved it when the crowd cheered as well, as Jaylen locks in on defending LeBron. That may have given him an extra confidence boost.
I'm starting to doubt bit by bit if we should actually trade him. Dude played well tonight while being passive. I can't imagine what he can do when he has free reigns.

I don't think we win this game without Avery Bradley.
Pride of Tacoma.
You know, I used to live in the game threads years ago. There was just nothing like watching the game while talking the game in the game threads. But as the Celtics started to get old during the Big 3 era, the game threads started getting nasty because a very negative set of characters came in and just loved antagonizing those trying to cheer on the team. I stop participating in the game threads because of it. It just wasn't enjoyable anymore.
But one thing I loved was when the Celtic won, especially big wins against good teams, those negative participants in the threads disappeared at the end of the threads. They could never hang around and congratulate the team. They could never post positive stuff about the players they always harrassed. God forbid they ever say that Doc ever made a good move to help win the game. They just disappeared and reappeared the next game ready to spread their dissatisfaction.
So this year I haven't been participating in these game threads but I have read them. What I have seen is that not much has changed. Oh there is a new set of antagonists but things just haven't changed. Big win tonight and I see the usual 2 or 3 guys spouting off negativity have disappeared and aren't here celebrating over the win.
The more things change....the more they stay the same. WTG Celtics. Best game of the year. Loved watching it.

Didn't get to post during the game, but what a win!! And a blast to watch, that was a playoff level competition.
Crowder, Horford, Bradley, Brown, even Jerebko made big plays down the stretch and IT adapted to the defense to kick out for 3s and draw FTs instead of getting overaggressive toward the rim. Brilliant stuff.

TP as usual Nick, what I've been saying lately.
Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else. Especially the first one. He basically took a straight on full speed tackle from a huge mofo in Derrick Williams. That seriously had to hurt. Definition of taking one for the team.
Actually no, jpotter, you aren't one of the people I had in mind. You praise as much as you critique and I don't think for an instant that you are doing it to simply spout off negativity and get a rise out of people. There are others I am refering to. Surely, you could probably hazard a guess as to who some of them are.You know, I used to live in the game threads years ago. Yeah, an echo chamber is clearly better to protect fragile feelings. ::)
I don't know if Nick was referring to me as one of these "negative" posters or not, though I assume he was since I'm one of the more vocal posters in the game threads, and I don't really care. This is ultimately just a game that we all enjoy watching and discussing about on this blog. None of this ultimately matters in the grand scheme of things.
But what I've noticed though lately on this blog is that you cannot criticize this team, coach, or management/ownership this season without someone jumping down your throat labeling you as a "pessimist" or a "hater" or a "negative character," just because you have have a different opinion than them and disagree with something that was done by the team or player. These people need to grow up and stop being so dang sensitive and overprotective about their own opinions and favorite players/teams. Everything isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and even your favorite people err at times.
IT is a legit MVP candidate this year, and he's been beyond excellent offensively for us this year. However, the last half dozen games or so he's played selfishly and with bad decision-making, and he's been a pretty consistent poor defender his entire Celtics career. It does not make you a "pessimist" or a "hater" to criticize him when he plays like this or plays bad defense. As long you give him his due praise when he deserves it, then it's totally fair for you to criticize him when he deserves it, and the same is true about all of the other players, Brad, and Danny, too. It just makes you a biased homer if you think you can only praise our players and not criticize them when they do things they shouldn't do.
I feel like I am fair in my criticisms, because I give our players, coach, and GM their due praise when they deserve it. Look at tonight and IT. When he forced possessions, didn't play through the offense and trust his teammates, or played bad defense, I criticized him for it and said he needs to be better. But I was also the first to praise him as soon as he did the right things, too, like the last half of the fourth quarter when he started penetrating and kicking to the open guy instead of forcing up bad shots, which he hasn't been doing the last several games.
And I think there are several other posters here who do the same things and are similarly justified doing so, yet many of us who dare to even justifiably criticize certain things about the players, coach, management, or team's play are still lumped in with those posters whose sole goal is to be negative on here (we all know who I'm talking about). Some of you need to stop being so sensitive and realize that people can have different opinions on the team and players than you, and that's okay. As long as you're fair in both your criticisms and praise, there's nothing wrong with holding players accountable.
That being said, I think I'm going to cut back posting on here, certainly the game threads, for awhile, because large portions of this blog have become toxic and major echo chambers that can't deal with anything but irrational optimism and blatant homerism about our players, team, and overall direction. It's just ridiculous having to defend yourself all of the time simply for having a contrary, critical opinion, even when you give out just as much praise to players as criticism. It doesn't make you a "hater" or "pessimist" or "someone who thinks they can coach or GM" better than Brad and Danny just because you disagree with one of their moves.
TP as usual Nick, what I've been saying lately.
Yeah, an echo chamber is clearly better to protect fragile feelings. ::)

Just getting back from the game. Fun night at the Garden. Pretty amazing action fur just of the second half - especially the first 8 minutes or so of the 3rd and the last 6 off the 4th. Kyrie was a treat to watch in person.Irving is a special special offensive player.

Are you actually reading the blog? Its ridden with negativity. "You cannot criticize" ::) every little thing has been nitpicked around here.
Read your posts tonight. It goes like this.
1) Go back to smart in the post
2) Why arent we going to Smart in the post
3) Some Horford praise
4) IT is losing us the game
5) Why are we isolating IT
6) IT is forcing etc etc
Now tell me, if you are a fan trying to support your team and enjoy the game, and you see this, are you going to be happy?!
Also you call me a blatant homer? I for one do not believe we would beat the Cavs or the Raps in a series. I do not believe Smart will be an all-star despite how much I like him as a player. I do not believe Rozier should be in the rotation, or that Ainge should not have traded for Cousins. Or that Zeller received playing time today. Do I have to mention them 5x in a row?
I echoed nick's sentiments because it is what Ive said lately (go look at LarBrd farewell thread). You may not be one of those guys nick mentioned, but I called you out today because there was a stretch where you had nothing but negativity that you have to wonder if you are in the game thread or the "we shouldnt have traded for IT" thread.
Thereeeeeee you go, IT. Keep attacking Kyrie's D if he's going to do the same to you.
Yep. Shump is clearly bothering him [IT], but he's doing a pretty good job of picking his spots. We win more games that way than when he tries to hero ball too often.
IT got his groove back a bit, too.
LOOK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PENETRATE AND KICK INSTEAD OF FORCING CRAP UP, IT!
Keep up the great work and smart decision-making!!
IT takes good shots that aren't forced, they go in and we go up.
IT drives and kicks out to the open guy when they collapse, we get good shots that go in.
IT plays hero ball and forces possessions, they don't go in and we lose.
Funny how that works. Keep up the smart play, IT!
That was a good, open shot for him [IT] off the side dribble. No problem at all with that shot. That's pretty much what was drawn up. It was a bit long, but he has that range.
THAT'S A W, BABY!
Great play all around to get the win!!
IT played EXCELLENT, SMART basketball down the stretch, just like we need him to.
Al had a great all around game, even if he didn't score as much.
Smart, AB, and Jae all did their things, too.
Great needed win. The addition of AB is going to be so huge for us down the stretch.
Horford with the great pass and Brown with the finish!! One more score and he has the triple double!
AMAZING D by Bradley right there!
Boy, I love Brown. He makes rookie mistakes, but he's clearly a much better player already on both sides of the ball than he was at the start of the season. The sky is the limit with this kid. His intelligence has really helped him pick up things quickly.
FINALLY, BIG AL IS BACK!
Excellent D by KO and Smart there!
I repeat, Smart is so, so special.
AB and Smart, and to a lesser extent Jae, are some of the absolute best at making things difficult for the opponent with smart, sound defense. AB's is the classic "ball hawk" that just absolutely drains you when you face him.
Yep. Love AB. Perfect professional. Sucks that he's probably the odd man out right now

And there's at least 10 more positive/praise posts throughout the thread. So, yeah, not quite as negative as your cherrypicking makes it out to be, and clearly that post is hyperbole.
EDIT: Deleted the rest. Not worth arguing over. Just know that I don't intentionally try to be excessively critical of players, if that's how you or others perceive it. I love the C's and all of our players, and, strangely enough, I'm actually an unabashed optimist in my real life. So take that for what it's worth.

Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else. Especially the first one. He basically took a straight on full speed tackle from a huge mofo in Derrick Williams. That seriously had to hurt. Definition of taking one for the team.
We really need a statistic for "things that make a difference but don't show up in the box score." I'd love to see what Smart looks like there.

I think people should be free to express their positive or negative thoughts on the game and team as they see fit. The problem is too many people take it as a direct attack on them or their family and can't separate themselves in the moment. If all it takes is an anonymous poster to rile you up, I'd say you have a deeper issues with obsession. People may not agree but if it's not a personal attack then the personal retaliation is completely uncalled for and I think those people are more of the problem of the board than anything else. If it doesn't pertain directly to you or you can't respond without being vindictive yourself, there is always the option to just ignore And move along.
After rewatching some of the stretch plays from last night, I still don't like our chances vs Clevelan but I'd love to opportunity to see a health AB + Kyrie match up over a 7 game series.

Exactly..well said
Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else. Especially the first one. He basically took a straight on full speed tackle from a huge mofo in Derrick Williams. That seriously had to hurt. Definition of taking one for the team.
We really need a statistic for "things that make a difference but don't show up in the box score." I'd love to see what Smart looks like there.

Advanced stats try to do exactly this, measure a players actual impact on winning. VORP, BPM, Win Shares, RPM, all have their pluses and minuses. RPM for instance, has Smart just behind IT in the point guard rankings.
actually, that is not at all what nick is saying. he is referring a generalized activity, mood for the blog, not him being attacked as a person. You know, I used to live in the game threads years ago. Fair enough , BPM/RPM use game flow info (i.e. you have to know who was on the floor when). But the only true quantifying of "things that don't show up in the box score" I think is done by the NBA's video analytics program, whatever its name was.Every single one of these is a boxscore stat, so they measure things that do show up in the box score. Those back to back charges taken by Smart was really something else. From my understanding, both BPM and RPM are outcome based and not on anything that shows up in the box score, except for +/-. The others combine box score numbers with outcomes. Feel free to enlighten me more, with specifics.
I think some of the strong disagreements between posters here are because this team is really in uncharted territory with having such a fast rebuild with a vet core, but still having a core of great prospects and picks. On top of that, our best vet player is 5'9. There is no precedence for this, nothing to really support arguments for the path the team should take, and its not even clear what the team is trying to really do. This will naturally bring up strong arguments on all ends.
There is nothing wrong with expressing criticism or support , that's what the forum is for, right? The problems come when people are too extreme on either end, and then take attacks on the team or on a certain path the team should take or on players or prospects personally. In line with this, there are also too many instances where people want praise for "being right " or "calling it". We all get things right and wrong in our predictions, that's not what this forum should be about. Who cares if a group of anonymous posters think you were right about a trad or prospect? What matters is if Ainge and the team management are right. If we all keep things in perspective and not lean to either extreme, we can have great discussions and learn a lot from the can other. We each bring different perspectives and different knowledge into this forum, we don't have to all agree but we can learn something from each perspective.

Yep, this kid bleeds green already.
After rewatching some of the stretch plays from last night, I still don't like our chances vs Cleveland but I'd love an opportunity to see a healthy AB + Kyrie match up over a 7 game series.
