Title: Jerry Krause Red Auerbach story; perfectly sums up Ainge today
Post by: slightly biased bias fan on February 27, 2017, 05:18:15 PM
Listening to The Vertical Podcast with Woj, he had a fantastic interview with Jerry Krause (former Bulls GM) he told a story about how afraid he was of trading with Red Auerbach, this seems the contemporary situation Ainge has.

Jerry Krause,

"My first year, morning of the draft, I get a call from Red...and Red wants to make a deal with me. He'll give me a second round pick, he'll give us, at that time Sam Vincent, who was a rookie with him...for a second round pick, he had a guy he wanted to take. And I'm thinking, boy I like Sam Vincent...somethings wrong, my antenna went straight up, wait a minute now. We had four to five hours before the draft started, I started making calls, I called Michigan State about Sam, I called his agent about Sam, I called anyone I could get a hold of about Sam Vincent. I could not get a negative thing about him, great kid, great young player...and I was still scared of Auerbach...and I backed out of the deal, Red called about four or five times but I said I was keeping the second round pick because I was scared of Auerbach...Auerbach had beaten so many people, so badly in trades, going back so many years that I was afraid of him......he could have offered me more then that and I wouldn't have dealt with him...I was too afraid to deal with Red."

Auerbach would be proud of the job Ainge has done

So we're going to need a little history behind this.

This is the 1986 draft and the C's didn't have a pick in the 2nd or 3rd round (this draft went 7 rounds).  They did nab a player named Len Bias in the 1st round though, but people around here probably aren't too familiar with that pick  :P

Bulls were picking #28 (remember, only a 24 team league at the time).

Bulls selected Larry Krystkowiak but traded him along with 2 future 2nd round picks ('87 and '92) to Portland for 2 year vet Steve Colter.  Krystkowiak was then traded again 2 days later in a package with vet Mychal Thompson for vet Steve Johnson.

Here's the career comparison of the three main players here. (http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.fcgi?request=1&sum=1&hint=Sam+Vincent&player_id1_select=Sam+Vincent&y1=1992&player_id1=vincesa01&hint=Steve+Colter&player_id2_select=Steve+Colter&y2=1995&player_id2=coltest01&hint=Larry+Krystkowiak&player_id3_select=Larry+Krystkowiak&y3=1997&player_id3=krystla01)  Vincent probably had the least spectacular career of three, finishing last in total games and minutes, but he did have the highest career PER!  Overall, it was really much ado about nothing from the Bulls perspective.

Funny thing is, Krause eventually did trade for Vincent (after the C's eventually traded him to Seattle the next year) for Sedale Threatt.

But who was Red targeting?  Notable players still on the board include: Johnny Newman (#29), Nate McMillan (#30), Kevin Duckworth (#33), David Wingate (#44), and Jeff Hornacek (#46).  Also Arvydas Sabonis (#24), Mark Price (#25), and Dennis Rodman (#27) went right before the pick, and since this call took place several hours before the draft, perhaps Red was targeting one of them?

Just a guess, but I think it was Kevin Duckworth he was targeting.

I remember hearing an interview with Larry Bird talking about Len Bias and Larry says that if Red got the first pick he was going to select Brad Daugherty, so perhaps because he missed out on Daugherty  he was looking to move up for another skilled seven footer.

I seem to remember another Krause story from the 90's when the Bulls had it going - Krause was contemplating some moves towards the end of Jordan's career and mouthed off about how he didn't want to end up like the Celtics after their great players from the 80's retired.

Larry Bird heard this and responded, "He sure wanted to be the Celtics when we were kicking his ass every time out"
