Game Notes
The Celtics return home from a 2 game road trip to face the Atlanta Hawks.  The Celtics lead the series 1-0 so far this season, winning 103-101 on January 13th.  Isaiah Thomas hit the game winner with 2 seconds left and Paul Millsap missed a heave at the buzzer to end the game.  They will face each other once more in Atlanta on April 6.

The Celtics are playing in back to back games, having played in Detroit on Sunday night.  Atlanta last played on Saturday when they lost to the Magic 105-86.  The Celtics have prided themselves on playing well in back to back games and are 9-4 on the second night of back to back games and 3-1 when the games are road/home.

Last season the Hawks won the series 3-1 with the Celtics winning the first game in Boston and then losing the final 3 meetings of the regular season.  The Celtics also faced the Haws in the first round of the playoffs, which the Hawks won 4-2. The Celtics are 7-3 in their last 10 games while the Hawks are 5-5 in their last 10.  The Celtics are 20-8 at home while the Hawks are 16-13 on the road.

The Hawks is another team that improved itself when they acquired Ersan Ilyasova from the 76ers at the trade deadline.  They also added Ryan Kelly and Lamar Patterson from the D-League.  Ilyasova has given the Celtics problems this season playing for the Sixers averaging 19.5 points against the Celtics this season.

Kelly played seven games, all starts, for the Celtics affiliate Red Claws where he averaged 27.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 35.8 minutes.   Patterson played 28 games, including 27 starts, and averaged 24.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 35.8 minutes for the Reno Big Horns. And just like that, the Hawks waived Patterson on Sunday.

Atlanta has no injuries to report at the time of this writing.   Avery Bradley is very close to returning to the Celtics' lineup.  He has participated in portions of practice and in the pre game warmups before the Pistons game and reportedly feels great.  He will be a game time decision once again.  Gerald Green is also a game time decision with a heel injury.

Standings Reset
The standings in the East are still up for grabs with several teams bunched up in the middle.  The Celtics pull to within 3 of the idle Cavs.  With a Celtics win and a Wizards loss, the Celtics are now 3 games ahead of the Wizards.  Toronto also won and remain 3 games behind the Celtics.  The Celtics are 5.5 games ahead of the Hawks.  The Raptors are also playing back to back and are at the Knicks.

Key Matchups
(http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=/i/headshots/nba/players/full/3213.png&w=230&h=185) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/paul_millsap.png)
Al Horford  vs  Paul Millsap
Millsap is averaging 18.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per game.     Horford should know Millsap's game well after playing with him in Atlanta for years.   Horford needs to stay with Millsap to keep him from having a big game.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/isaiah_thomas.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/dennis_schroder.png)
Isaiah Thomas vs Dennis Schroder
Schroder is averaging 17.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game.  Even off the bench, Schroder was a problem for the Celtics in the playoffs.  He is a very good defender and so Isaiah will need to work harder to get his points in this game.

Honorable Mention
Amir Johnson vs Dwight Howard
Howard is averaging 13.4 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks.  He will make getting to the basket difficult for the Celtics.  Amir has to somehow keep Howard off the boards and out of the paint.  Hopefully he will hit a couple of 3's and be able to pull Howard out to the perimeter.

Keys to the Game
Play as a Team - The Celtics didn't get a star at the trade deadline and so they have to play harder as a team.  They have to move the ball and find the open man who then has to hit his shots.  More importantly they need to work as a team on defense and get stops and turn them into fast breaks.  They need to remember their theme from last year's playoffs that they are One Superstar and play like it.

Take Care of the Ball - The Hawks are 9th in the league in steals with 8.3 per game.   The   The Hawks are 4th in the league in forcing turnovers with 15.3 per game, turning them into 16.5 points per game.  The Celtics have to make good passes and not allow the Hawks to get extra points off steals and turnovers.  If the Celtics get careless, the Hawks will make them pay.

Rebound -  The Celtics have to make an extra effort to crash the glass and not give the Hawks extra possessions.  Howard and Milsap are tough on the boards and the Celtics need to box out and aggressively go after the rebounds as a team to avoid giving them second chance and fast break points.  The Hawks are 8th in the league with 13.6 second chance points per game.  This may be the biggest difference in these two teams.  The Celtics are  averaging 41.1 rebounds per game while the Hawks are averaging 44.1 rebounds per game.

Defense
- Defense wins games.   The Hawks have players who can put points up in a hurry and the Celtics have to concentrate on defense to keep them from having big games.   Both of these teams pride themselves on playing tough defense.   The Celtics have to focus on playing tough lock down defense if they want to get a win.

Be Aggressive
- The Celtics must be the team that plays harder and that wants this win more.  They have to be aggressive in diving for loose balls, in going to the basket, in getting stops on the defensive end, and in going after rebounds.  They have to play harder and be more aggressive from start to finish.  Their best hope to beat the Hawks is to play harder from start to finish.

X-Factors
Focus and Fatigue
-   The Celtics are playing on the second night of back to back games after being on the road and so fatigue and focus may be factors.  They have to come out focused on the game and on playing their best against a tough Atlanta team.   They have to concentrate on playing team ball and  stay focused throughout the game.  Staying focused may help them stave off fatigue from playing two nights in a row.

Playing for Al - Every player likes to beat their former team.  The Celtics beat them the first time they played them and I'm sure he would love to get a win in this one and win the season series from them.  This should give the team added motivation if they needed any.

Officiating - Officiating is always an x-factor.  The Celtics play best when the officials let them play and don't call a lot of ticky tack fouls for incidental contact.    Referees with an agenda are always a possibility as well.   But the Celtics can't let the officials take them out of their game with bad or ticky tack calls.   They have to play their game regardless of the way the game is called.

Hopefully a game against his old team will wake Al back up offensively. We really need his shot to be hitting in order to be successful.

Going to need to have that team rebound mentality again tonight to have a chance on the boards against Howard/Millsap.

also, Jaylen Brown is in the starting lineup and the reserves
we lost to the bulls and the raptors, and almost to the pistons, it is time to really get back at playing that pre all star level.

Hoping Brad stops pulling the reigns on Jaylen after hot starts. Keep him in the game. Kid capable of 20 points a game with decent minutes, especially with other teams doubling IT.

Not to nitpick, but you don't have Tim Hardaway Jr. on the reserves.  Probably because he just got sent back to the bench for this game.

I wouldn't expect it, but it doesn't mean it isn't possible.

I do expect he'll see the court sometime this week.

Always enjoy your write-ups FL! Thanks!
One point I must contend on your matchups, however, is where you say Shroeder is a very good defender.  His defense, in actuality, based on points allowed to opposing point guards, is the SECOND WORST in the league, with only IT being the WORSE!  They should have a field day against each other!

AB to start on a 15-20 minute restriction.

Not sure I like starting him right off, and I honestly might prefer Jaylen to keep starting with how well he's been playing and the extra size and versatility he brings the starting unit. But it's certainly great to see AB back. He'll really help out offense.

What else are we going to do with the money? lol It's not like it'd be a trade that costs assets.

Seriously, though, if we don't spend it on one of those three, then more than likely we're just going to run it back with this same basic group, which I'm not a fan of. If we're just signing him with cap space, then you need to spend it somehow, and Milsap would be a significant upgrade for us.

Yeah, Howard didn't do anything wrong with that IT grab. So ridiculous. I don't even know what a flagrant is in the NBA anymore. It's so arbitrary and changes from game to game. 9 times out of 10 that's a flagrant foul any other game.

So after all the weak ass fouls the NBA calls as flagrants (See IT's "flagrant" on DeRozan the other night) they call a non-basketball play a common foul?

NBA officiating and its inconsistencies.

Yeah, Howard didn't do anything wrong with that IT grab. So ridiculous. I don't even know what a flagrant is in the NBA anymore. It's so arbitrary and changes from game to game.

Howard gets the same treatment as Smart . ..

They could be angels and still be the NBA s whipping boys

These games are the reason Ainge is not passing up the opportunity to choose between a dynamic 6'6 or 6'5 PG. I cringe every time IT drive into the lane.  Yeah I cheer when he makes the shot but I still don't expect him to.  He has a hard time aginst skilled guards with size and he plays too much hero ball.  Yeah he's the hero more often than not but I see more of these games as he ages not less, so I'm firmly in the no Brinks truck camp.  Watch with howard out IT will have a big 4th quarter and finish with a bunch of points yet again masking the real problem with giving him a Max contact.

honestly its as much Thomas's fault as anyone elses. Hes taken 17 shots tonight and made 3. I understand that hes earned the right to shoot through his slumps and that if we had another scorer he might not have to be as aggressive, but its tough to blame 3/17 on teammates.

We don't know that. Right now, he's the only one on the team that can consistently score. They are shooting 30%. I don't rhino he has any sort of confidence in anyone else on the team to consistently score.

Getting outrebounded by 16. But, once again, just another reminder that Danny said we didn't need another rebounder that might hurt this offense.

What's even worse is that the Raptors won tonight, too, so they'd just be two freaking games back of us now if we lose this.

This team is screwed if IT has an off night. Offense is nonexistent when he's off. Don't care what everyone says about getting a rim protector. Getting another scorer should be priority number one.
honestly its as much Thomas's fault as anyone elses. Hes taken 17 shots tonight and made 3. I understand that hes earned the right to shoot through his slumps and that if we had another scorer he might not have to be as aggressive, but its tough to blame 3/17 on teammates.
He's having a bad shooting night no doubt and the past couple of games. But the rest of the team ain't helping either.

The problem is IT becomes a blackhole if his shots are not falling. Even if there is another scorer, he wouldn't get touch because IT is forcing the issue.
We don't know that. Right now, he's the only one on the team that can consistently score. They are shooting 30%. I don't rhino he has any sort of confidence in anyone else on the team to consistently score.
He needs to trust more his teammates. His selfishness could lead to this team's downfall. Like I said earlier, he needs to learn when to pass and when to take over. If his shots are not falling, play within the offense and stop forcing the issue.

Seriously, when does Brad have a talk with IT about forcing shots and trying to do too much? The last half dozen games or so he's let all of this talk go to his head and has been forcing way too much. 3-17 tonight with 4 TOs is just unacceptable for our star player.
When he gets another player who can create their own shot?
tonight he's creating inflated block stats for the other team.  passing the ball around might resolve both issues

Yep. He can still penetrate and kick, which he should've done several times tonight instead of taking it amongst the trees.

He can't kick when he drives into the paint because Atlanta's too long, so he can't see where his players are.  That's part of why everyone stand still when Isaiah drives the lane so he can try to throw it to where he last saw somebody.

You take away IT's 15 MISSED SHOTS and we're shooting a shade under 44%... No excuse for him shooting that much, especially when half of them were forced possessions. He's got to be better if he's the leader of this team.

fixed that for you.  IT has always had issues passing from not being able to see over/around players in the paint to having to jump to make passes that other PGs can make without leaving their feet.

Al and Crowder deserve a ton of blame, too. It's unacceptable that our three current best players play like this.

It's game like this that just make you want to go with our youth and start over again. Our "stars" have such significant flaws that it's hard to put a legitimate contending team around them. When we struggle this much with size and aggressive, athletic D, there's a problem.

Bill Simmons isn't letting Danny off the hook for this deadline either.

https://twitter.com/BillSimmons/status/836403799468040192

Quote
Trade deadline guys that would have helped the Celtics bench...

Noel
Tucker
Bogdanovic
Ibaka
Gibson
Lou Williams
Ilyasova
Anyone

But, no, let's hoard all of these lesser assets so that we can field a D-League team and an international team.

None of those guys get us past Cleveland, let alone the Warriors.  Few of them would have any long term future with the team, so we'd be giving up assets for...what?  A couple more regular season wins?

And I'm not sure I'd want any of those guys over Bogut, but signing any of them would preclude getting him.

Mike

We have a milliion assets, and literally none of those players would've cost any of our main assets in the Brooklyn picks, Smart, Brown, or any of our main rotation players. We could've easily afforded it, and a couple of those players would've significantly gave us a better chance of defeating Cleveland, such as Ibaka. We can't use all of those lesser assets anyways, otherwise you're just getting a bunch more of James Youngs, Fab Melos, and RJ Hunters.

There's no point in putting out such a flawed, while still decent, team if you're not going to give them a legit fighting chance of making noise in the playoffs. At that point, you might as well get as many assets as you can and build from the ground up and look for actual franchise pieces and stars that don't have such obvious holes in their games.

Olynyk pulling another disappearing act. For those that think he is going to develop into anything more than a bench player, these last three games, and a whole bunch more this year and throughout his career are the reason he won't. He has a bunch of good games and then just disappears for another stretch of games. He does it all the time.

This officiating crew is awful.  Absolutely no consistency.  This is the same crew which was awful during the Golden State game.  The woman ref is horrible.  I remember her calling an unnatural act call on JB during the GS game. Is it mean of does Milsap push off before every shot attempt.

I only watch this team for Smart and Jaylen at this point.

100% with you.  I've not liked this team all year because again it's the same **** different year.  An overachieving team that's not good enough to get out of the second round.  I don't care how many 50 point games it has we don't have a team and we don't have a team because management hasn't tried to build one.  Smart and brown both ply team ball and agressive.  It has no idea how to play team ball and outside of Bradley and jerebko, everyone else is soft has pancake batter

IT was horrible tonight, and I'm glad the streak ended, because the way he was chasing it was dangerous, but the number of people killing him is ridiculous. Harden has bad games. Westbrook has bad games. Isaiah has bad games. It's okay; he's human. We're nowhere without Isaiah, and we should remember that.

the hate on this board has gotten a little ridiculous.

One bad game doesn't mean that IT sucks or that the Celtic suck.

It's a loooooong season. There will be days like this.

No, we're probably not a playoff team without Isaiah, but where would he be without the Celtics?

He's gotten to this point not only due to his talent but also due to this offense and playing within this system. He's been playing selfishly and it's hurt the team at times. He has to get back to playing more team-oriented ball.

The C's looked tired.

When IT struggles to score, he has little use. He's not a good enough of a distributer of the ball to decoy himself, rather he just keeps trying to score the ball. Only the NBA is starting to figure out how to defend him, everyone is using the same formula to do it too. Lets just call it an off game for IT.

We were out rebounded 42 to 31, not good.

On the positive side Brown is looking better and better.

Pretty much this. Let's not pretend that this system hasn't elevated his offense to this point by giving him all the freedom, touches, and shots he wants. But he's went overboard with that freedom lately, and Brad has to reign him in.

And let's also not forget the fact that IT is a MAJOR negative on the defensive end of the floor, so he's actually significantly hurting us on both ends of the floor when he has off offensive nights and forces up crap possessions all night long. If he wants a max contract, then he has to be better.

Max mentioned Russ and Harden, but neither of them are the major defensive negative that IT is due to his historically small size. They also do other things in the offense and rebound much more than IT, so they're not as limited to scoring as IT is.

If he wants a max contract, then these types of nights just can't happen for him. He's too incomplete of a player to do so. Missing 17 shots and having 7 TOs is just inexcusable, and it goes way beyond him just having a bad shooting night and gets into him forcing shots trying to get his. That's selfish basketball and has no place on our team.

I'm a realist!  If your ok with watching a team built to bounce in the second round year after year then maybe you don't understand the definition of a fan.  fans have passion for their team and don't just take what their given and accept it.  If I have passion for something and I see it possibly being harmed I'm gonna say something not just sit back and be ok with it happening.  If your ok with watching an overachieving squad get exposed in the playoffs year after year then so be it.  If your ok with a team sport being determined by the contributions of one player, then you enjoy it.  If your ok with watching teams around you get better and your team continues to struggle in glaring spots without it being addressed, then you enjoy that. But don't come barking at me about fandom when I want this team to be better while you and your kind are ok with whatever you get.

everyone is under the impression that they are a realist.

youve basically stated that if you dont win a championship its all pointless, so your standard is pretty ridiculously high.

If only 3% of the league can be succesful in a given season Id argue you have a rather pessimistic outlook.

Another awful game from IT. Let's hope the streak has ended, the title of top scorer if farther away and he realizes he need his teammates to succeed. Well, at least one teammate so that this is not a 1 Vs 5 game, especially in the fourth.

I've grown tired of him last weeks, as much as I love(d) him as a player. Let's go the right way again.

We played pretty poorly and shot poorly last night.   Optimist or Pessimist, I don't see how folks can deny that.  We were outrebounded by 15 and shot 39% and we let the other team shoot 48% not the recipe for success.  Another Bad Kelly night and he made it worse by whining to the refs though they made some bad calls.   Is it just me or do we never get homecourt advantage with the refs.

I thought Brown played well, Smart played really well and Bradley looked sharp in the minutes he played in terms of his shot.  Really excited about Smart's growth and Brown's!
