Hope it's OK to create a new topic for Patriots playoff talk apart from the NFL 2016 season thread. We've had dedicated Patriots threads in the past and I feel like the NFL thread is targeted to fans of all teams.
Wondering who you hope the Pats will play next week. The Texans-Raiders game contains the likely opponent, but if the Dolphins somehow knock off the Steelers tomorrow, it will be Miami in Foxboro next week.
Texans, Raiders and Dolphins all are flawed, especially with the Carr injury. No elite quarterback there, though Tanehill has been a thorn for the Pats in the past (not sure if he'll be healthy). Watching the Houston-Oakland game -- both have weapons, but the QB situation is rough for both teams. JJ Watt probably back for Houston next week.
As an aside, not considering who would be the best match-up next week, I would love to see the Steelers go down.
I realize the Pats will be highly favored no matter who they play, but every NFL team makes me nervous to some extent. Who do you want the Pats to play?
-
Ideally the Patriots play Miami, and then the winner of this HOU/OAK game miraculously beats KC next week so that New England have an EASY road to the Super Bowl.
That being said I doubt MIA beats Pittsburgh. I think I'd rather face Houston, because we seem to have their number and if you can contain Hopkins (like they have the past few times they've faced Houston), then Osweiler will STRUGGLE. Houston's defense is really shaky as well, but they are benefitting by playing an Oakland team with Cook instead of Carr and McGloin.
Anyways Oakland is struggling big time so I think Houston will come to Foxboro next week.
-
I just didn't want to see the Steelers before the AFC championship so I am happy no matter what. There will be two opportunities for them to be knocked off before then so am hoping for the best. The Pats are massively favored, otherwise, and if they can just go out and execute as they have all season (besides the stupid Seahawks goal-line situation), then we should be good to go.
Not trying to be overconfident, though - still having a tough time with those two Giants SB losses as well as the 21-pt blown 2nd half lead to Payton game which gave him his first undeserved SB win (last year's was super-annoying since Osweiler essentially led that team during the season).

Considering that there are about 173 Sixers threads (on a Celtics blog), this thread should be acceptable. ;D
I know that any team can beat any other on any given day, and the Patriots have had a couple of playoff klunkers during the Brady-Belichick era (bound to happen with so many playoff appearances), but I think the Chiefs and the Steelers are the only AFC teams that could reasonably be expected to give the Pats a struggle at this point.
OAK's chances have been obliterated due to injuries, and the HOU offense is pretty terrible. MIA has played better of late, but is clearly inferior to NE. I see KC as the main hurdle, primarily because of its D, but PIT has just enough pieces to maybe be a challenge.
So, whom do I want facing the Pats? I guess I don't have a preference. NE's D has started to click, the Brady/Bennett combo appears to be getting comfortable, and the Patriots have been adding weapons—signing Floyd, getting Lewis back from injury a few weeks ago, and now Amendola is back. I think they're loaded for bear.
-
Other than Richard, Oakland has been completely hapless. It may be Houston's defense, but I don't think so. Oakland is just done. So I want to play them next week!

I really do think Oakland is cooked. In my opinion, Carr's injury ended their hopes of even making the Super Bowl, and McGloin's injury just about ended their hopes of even winning a playoff game, which is too bad, because they had a great season. They may be able to beat Houston, because Houston's offense is that bad, but that's the most they can hope for.
-
So it's Houston next week. Hope KC can put a wrench in Pittsburgh's Superbowl hopes. I'd rather see KC in the AFC championship game if the Pats get past the Texans.
Giant's defense currently stagnating Green Bay's offense. I'd hate to see NYG in another Superbowl. That match-up would render either the most satisfying or most disastrous outcome. I'd rather see the Pats not have to risk the latter. But.... that's thinking too far ahead -- just hoping they get by Houston for now.
-
Giants really dominated the 1st half, but now down 7-6. Jordy Nelson injury will be huge if he's unable to return
-

Crazy play to end the half!

Wow...make that 14-6
-

Crazy play to end the half!
Packers with a huge beeak on the previous play - dropped pass that would have run the clock out if caught. I doubt it was dropped on purpose. Hail Mary works and Giants complete the best half they could hope for down 14-6.
-
Rodgers looks unstoppable right now. Have a feeling the Packers are going to another Super Bowl.
Matchup with the Texans looks pretty good for the Pats. Hopefully the Chiefs take out the Steelers. I want no part of them in the championship game, even at home.
-
Any 49ers fans out there, watching Green Bay, wondering "what could have been" if the 49ers had picked Rodgers instead of Smith?

I'm not kidding, but right before that pass was made, I thought, "The Packers seem to have more success with Hail Marys than any other team," and they did it again.
As much as I'd love to see the Pats finally beat the Giants in a Super Bowl, I ain't sad to see them eliminated.

I think the Texans are the easiest matchup for New England, though I hope the Patriots don't take them lightly. Osweiler is terrible (I think his performance against Oakland was a fluke), and New England is firing on all cylinders right now.
-
As a lifelong Patriots fan, I have no love lost for the Giants (even though I've lived in NYC for the past 8 years). And I am thoroughly enjoying this beat down.
-
Q: How many points did the Packers score?
A: Take the Giants score and, uh, multiply by 3...
-
Nightmare scenario possibly playing out in Foxboro -- at least the 1st half. Pats D has been on the field for 90% of the half. Geez.
-
Patriots started well—14-3 lead while having the ball only a handful of plays—but then turnovers from Brady/Floyd and Lewis set up opportunities that even the semi-hapless Texans couldn't screw up.
-
They'll be fine, should pull away in the 2nd half. Hopefully without injuries, though.
-

Getting denied after 1st and goal at the 1 to close the half is pretty bad though. Houston smells a huge win, they will come for blood.

For sure, not a good half after a hot start. HOU won't have the firepower to keep up as long as the offense can figure out a way to start opening up the field. That deep play to Edelman looked encouraging.
-
I think Houston smells blood. I would not be surprised to see them pull this off if NE doesn't start playing smarter
-
Never seen them make so many bad mistakes. The penalty on Rowe was unbelievable. HOU QB keeping Pats in the game.
-

All the signs are there for an epic loss by the Pats.
-
Now that's more like it!
-
Now that's more like it!
Yes! Now how about a 3 and out.
-
Here we go. Way to bounce back!
-
Yeah, foolish play by Rowe, and the two turnovers were bad. Houston's D has been pretty good, but it's kinda ridiculous that the Pats haven't rattled Osweiler, who was one of the worst QBs this season.
Kinda typical post-bye performance for the Pats. They've often struggled after having that week off to start the playoffs.
-
Unfortunate turn for the Pats—fumble recovery returned 71 yards for a touchdown but then the call was changed to an incomplete pass.
Then again, they got lucky immediately after that when the Texans beat them deep but Fuller dropped what would've been a touchdown.
And now another INT for Brady. SMH
I was just about to say that the Houston D has been good but the Pats O has looked discombobulated.
-
Nice sack Malcolm Brown
-
Costly drive - Bennett with a knee. Would be a big loss moving forward
Hogan also hurt.
-
If Bennett is out, I'd write the Pats off to win the SB. Hogan would be a tough enough loss. Wow, what a horrible sequence of events.
-
I hope Hogan is alright, but a win is a win! this game almost gave me a heart attack
-
I hope Hogan is alright, but a win is a win! this game almost gave me a heart attack
Way closer than what the score indicates.
-
Assuming Bennett and Hogan are healthy this could be something of a best case scenario. Team will come out flying next week.
-

Sorry to spoil your dramatic spiel, but Bennett only missed one play. Hogan sounds like a thigh bruise.
-
New England's going to have to be a LOT better than that next week, regardless of the opponent. They need to stop listening to the oddsmakers and the hype.
-

yea our defense stepped up big time, or else i don't know how close the score was going to be
-
I know I'm a spoiled Pats fan, but that might've been the least inspiring playoff win they've ever had. I actually feel less confident now about their Super Bowl chances.
-
So who are you guys hoping the Pats face next week, Pitt or KC?
-
Wow, what a game and a W by Green Bay.
-
Wow, what a game and a W by Green Bay.
Go Pack Go! Such a big win, I was nervous all game
-
So who are you guys hoping the Pats face next week, Pitt or KC?
KC. Pitt is tough, talented, been there before.
-

On the flip side, BB will use all of those miscues as fodder to motivate the team this next week.
-
That AWKWARD Moment when Houston were the only Texas team to register a W in the playoffs
-
So who are you guys hoping the Pats face next week, Pitt or KC?
KC. They're maybe a better all around team, or at least more consistent, but Pitt's QB > KC's and has more big-game experience.
-
So who are you guys hoping the Pats face next week, Pitt or KC?
Unless the Pats get their act together, it won't matter.
Wow, what a game and a W by Green Bay.
I hate Dallas almost as much as I hate the Giants and Jets, so it was great to see the Cowboys lose.
-
So who are you guys hoping the Pats face next week, Pitt or KC?
KC. They're maybe a better all around team, or at least more consistent, but Pitt's QB > KC's and has more big-game experience.
I agree. Bell is great, Brown is great, Ben is experienced and good..
KCs defense is good - they are probably a better balanced team overall. But Steelers scare me and they are a team I always root against.
-
And Pittsburgh here we go...not what I was hoping for as they put up six scores today (along with an interception in the endzone), but you have to go through the best to win the Super Bowl. At least it's in Gillette.
Let's go Pats!!
-
I am hoping the Pats are healthy v. Pittsburgh.
Anyone hear anything today about Pats injuries? I know Jabaal Sheard was hurt, Hogan was hurt and Bennett looked like his knee was hyper-extended (though he continued to play). Malcolm Mitchell also didn't suit up. Hope these guys will all be ready for the Steelers. Should be a tough game.
-
My biggest concerns against Pittsburgh:
- Lack of pass rush means Big Ben will have time, be able to evade any pressure
- Run defense, which was decent this year, dealing with a big play back in Bell
- Offensive line needs to give Brady enough time to throw against Steelers' interior rushers
Feels like it'll be a shootout. Pats need their pass-catching backs (Lewis, White) to make up for the lack of big play threats in the middle of the field / red-zone (no Gronk, Bennett hurt).
-
I think one of the teams will score 30 plus points, and hope it's the Pats. Not having Gronk, recent injuries to Mitchell, Hogan and Bennett, and lack of Brady trust in Floyd after Saturday, gives me pause to predict Pats will win. The NFC has been far crazier, especially the Dallas-GB game. Aaron Rogers is playing out of his mind again.
-
So anyone else worried for tomorrow night's game?
I still think the Pats will hold on for the win, but it will be CLOSE.
No Gronk hurts (he usually terrorizes Pittsburgh), but Bennett can hopefully have a big day.
My gut tells me that despite Floyd's bad game last week, he will be due for a big game tomorrow.
As long as the defense keeps Big Ben out of the end zone more often than not, it should be a NE win.
My Prediction: 28-20 Patriots (leading to the New England - Atlanta Super Bowl)
-
Well, here we go. Atlanta plays a perfect 60 minutes against what is either a very injured, sick, overrated Green Bay team. Whoever wins the AFC will have their hands full with Atlanta.
I am afraid of this game today. Hope the Pats can put some pressure on Ben and limit Bell somewhat.
-
The only defensive player that Pitt has that scares me is Shazier and he is inconsistent. LBs with speed always scare me though.
-
I expect Bill to sell out to stop Bell and pray that Butler can remain competitive with Brown. You shut down Bell and keep Brown from going off and you win.
-
Carved 'em up but dropped ball hurts a lot. Nice to get on the board though. Plenty of time for Brady -- big difference from last week. Go defense!
-
Edit: Steelers responding well (reverse jinx)
-
Logan Ryan's getting abused so far. But the Pats offense has looked pretty good.
-
Logan Ryan's getting abused so far. But the Pats offense has looked pretty good.
Yeah. Rough half for him.
-
The defense did better when the steelers were more predictable with the run.
-
The 3rd and 10 early in that drive was an opportunity lost. Ryan should have been able to get through the "screen" and made the tackle.
Crisp and balanced drive for the Steelers. Pats need to respond.
-
Big play missed there by Brady. And now 3-10.
Pats not getting anywhere on the ground.
-
A flea flicker? Are you kidding me?
-
Tom/Bill know something the rest of the world does not.
-
2 Huge third down plays on that drive.
-
A flea flicker? Are you kidding me?
That was an incredible play. I was fooled, along with the whole Steelers defense. Brilliant call by McDaniels.
-
A flea flicker? Are you kidding me?
The safeties won't be breaking in so fast on run plays now
-
A flea flicker? Are you kidding me?
The safeties won't be breaking in so fast on run plays now
Great point. That play could've been designed as much for that purpose as for the touchdown.
-
Let's go defense. Stop 'em.
Huge play coming up. Stop here would be great. Steelers with a chance to score on either end of the half. Getting no pressure.
-
That zone D is not effective without any pressure.
-
Let's go defense. Stop 'em.
Pats D has gotten a couple of lucky breaks with two Pittsburgh drops that could've easily been touchdowns. Seems like the Pats are playing to not give up the big play, but Big Ben has taken advantage with the short game and is just marching the Steelers down the field. A big play or two from the Pats D would be nice.
-
That zone D is not effective without any pressure.
Typical lack of pass rush from NE. And yeah, I'm not liking the zone D, either.
-
Dang that was bad. Pats getting absolutely nothing on Rothlesberger. Stands there and waits.
-
Ah great. Speaking of getting hurt by no pass rush ... Ben had all day to make that pass. Might not be a TD on review, but I doubt they'll fail to get in from a foot.
-
Bill better use his timeouts so we give Brady another chance to score.
No time to play conservative in AFC championship game.
-
Dang that was bad. Pats getting absolutely nothing on Rothlesberger. Stands there and waits.
They're giving him WAY too much time. But this is nothing new—the Pats have never been much of a pass-rush team, unfortunately.
-

Yeah and he's making it look a lot easier then what we're doing.
-
Ah great. Speaking of getting hurt by no pass rush ... Ben had all day to make that pass. Might not be a TD on review, but I doubt they'll fail to get in from a foot.
Wow. Negative TP for myself. ;D
-

But they do!!! Great stand by the Pats. If Pats can move the ball now, that is a fantastic turnaround heading into the half.
-
There's that 35 percent Redzone offense on the road. That was awful by the steelers.
-

TP for self-improvement -- now you break even. :) What a big goal-line stand, man.

How do you not trust the best QB in history to run a 2 minute drive. I hope that doesn't come back to bite us.
-
Disappointing end of half drive. Pretty much nothing went right there.
Defense is going to have to somehow make stops in the 2nd half. That means getting some pressure on Ben.
-
Funny halftime show. You can pick up they are rooting for Steelers.
-

Yep. Let's hope Pats can create a turnover or two (and not give any up). That could be the difference in this game.
-
Also, let's hope the Pat's youngsters (e.g., Rowe) don't commit any boneheaded penalties.
-
I got a bad feeling we are going to look back and wish Bill let Brady sling it to end the half.
-
I got a bad feeling we are going to look back and wish Bill let Brady sling it to end the half.
Yeah that was a totally wasted opportunity
-
Logan got away with one there
-
Yes! Nice stop.
Go offense!
-
I got a bad feeling we are going to look back and wish Bill let Brady sling it to end the half.
Yeah, they could've at least run one more play to try for a touchdown. And it seemed that every Patriot who touched the ball on that drive couldn't keep his feet and/or get out of bounds.
-
Yes! Nice stop.

Putting up 7 more on this drive would be fantastic for their momentum.

Bobbled balls and slippery feet. This can't end soon enough.

Bill is the Best but simetmes the conservative play calling gets predictable. As soon as the first play went bad I knew he would try killing the clock.
-
Nice play Blount getting 2-3 extra yards but let's get the first

Agree.
-
This tv timeout sucks.
Show us the replays.
-
Gigantic ruling coming up. Hoping they can't see the evidence to overrule.
-
Nice FG.
Mitchell should have been able to get that first foot in.
-
I'm getting more uncomfortable as the game goes on. Can't get to Ben and can't run the ball.
Receivers are getting open.
-
Gigantic ruling coming up. Hoping they can't see the evidence to overrule.
According to the TV analysts, the referee saw the fumble happen. Then that same referee said a Pittsburgh player came out of the pile with the ball. So I don't know what the thinking was on the review. I'm just glad the Pats kept it.
-
Chung gives this defense some very needed toughness

This happens to me a lot with Pats playoff games. Missed play here, dropped pass there, they don't stomp on their opponent's neck, and I get nervous.
-
The zone again
-
Terrible pass rush again, terrible pass coverage again.
-
The zone again
It's as bad as the prevent defense.
-
Logan's best play there.
-
Ben going for those bombs is helping us. He has the underneath stuff.
-
Logan's best play there.
I noticed that too.
Boy, if the Pats hang on, they're gonna get shellacked by the Falcons offense unless they figure out a pass rush.
-
Logan's best play there.

We should be able to score 30 on them. You know Bill is taking Julio Jones out. Someone else will have to beat us.

Yeah, their pass D is awful, so the Pats SHOULD score a bunch in that situation, but Matt Ryan is a better QB (right now, at least) than Ben, and has more weapons at his disposal. Though I guess a shootout Super Bowl win would be pretty entertaining.
-
You really got to vice grip that ball vs steelers
-
Wow Blount is a bad man
-
Wish we could get more of a run game going....

Heh heh, the old "reverse jinx"

No run game tonight -- except that one where Blount carried the entire Steelers defense to the 2.

Wow, Hogan.
That was a fantastic play, as was Blount's big run.
-

It's the postseason, time to pull all the tricks out of the bag. ;D
I also want to highlight James Develin's awesome catch and run for a first on that drive.
And now a fumble recovery! Van Noy has proven to be a great addition.
And how much are the Bills kicking themselves right now watching Hogan rack up the yards?
-
Almost party time.
-
Almost party time.
Now they're clicking.
-
Someone check them balls. Brady must be cheating!!!
-
And of course the only thing I can take from that is that the Steelers are within 3 touchdowns due to the missed extra point. Dang that.
-
Someone check them balls. Brady must be cheating!!!
He's been cheating for 17 years. ;)
-
And of course the only thing I can take from that is that the Steelers are within 3 touchdowns due to the missed extra point. Dang that.
LOL
-
Ben wasting plays on those bombs has been huge.
-
Not great D by NE on this drive. I hope they're not assuming the W.
-
I wonder how loyal Matt Patricia will be. It would be nice to keep him for a while.
-
And of course the only thing I can take from that is that the Steelers are within 3 touchdowns due to the missed extra point. Dang that.
They are within striking distance for a TD now, and then another quarter to go, so no time for the Pats to let up.
-
Not great D by NE on this drive. I hope they're not assuming the W.
Ditto. Got to play 60 mins.
-
Not great D by NE on this drive. I hope they're not assuming the W.
Unfortunately, Pats offense still has to make plays if the Pats are going to win. Steelers very efficiently driving for a TD here.
-
Stopped a TD there and now steelers wasting time
-
Much better second half for Logan.
-
Another gigantic stop.
Pats just run the ball -- take the time and boot it out of there. No clock stoppage.
Though the Steelers have been in the backfield on about half of Pats run plays, so maybe not.
-
Much better second half for Logan.
That guy is about to get a $40M/4 year contract or something like that from some team not named the New England Patriots.
-
I would take Lewis out. Don't risk injury.
-
Much better second half for Logan.

that seems like too much.
-
Huh, Pats only able to run off 2 mins of the clock?
-
Cyrus Jones making his presence felt in a positive way -- a couple of good special teams plays.
Now -- at least make them take some time off the clock. Come on Defense!!
-

He'll get paid as a starting CB (albeit a #2).
-
Rowe has had a fantastic game.
-
Rowe may have gotten a couple of breaks on drops earlier, but he's hung in there and that was very nice.
Run the ball!
-
Got to be careful. Some ankle twisting going on there.
-
Run the ball. A FG makes it a 4 score game. Run it
-
We'll take your castoffs, your:
LeGarrette Blounts
Chris Hogans
Chris Longs
Eric Rowes
Alan Branches
Kyle Van Noyes
Heck, even your Barkevius Mingos and Shea McLellins.
Send them our way!!
-
Bennet is a warrior playing through injuries
-
Got to be careful. Some ankle twisting going on there.
I can't imagine the Steelers would intentionally play dirty, though. I mean, that would compromise the integrity of the game, and all.
-
Why not just run it. Instead we risk Brady to injury twice. Crazy
-
Sorry, but they could have taken an extra minute and a half off the clock if they just run the ball . I'd rather have kicked the FG with 5 minutes left.
Glad Brady kept that ball rather than throw away -- but risky play and unnecessary.
-
Get Brady out of there. Next time Pats get the ball it should be in JG's hands.
-
Pats run defense definitely in good form today. I know Bell was hurt early, but Williams is a strong, crafty RB.
-
For better or worse, Belichick and Brady will never change. Can't really fault them too much given their track record.
-
I don't really care about football but I want very much to see Brady win after that whole ordeal about his balls.
-
Belichick is a genius then again you all knew that already.
-
Please just field this on-side kick cleanly. I really want to be able to relax.

it's been over for the last 10 minutes of the game clock. The only worry is if someone gets injured.
Never relax.
I can see that. I actually feel bad for you. I thought I was bad.

seven Super Bowl appearances in 16 years? Just incredible.
eat that Steven A and all the other haters
I wonder if the league has been measuring the PSI of the balls used tonight?
I wonder what mini scandal will erupt over night?
EDIT: Was it BB who had the fire alarm pulled? Time for a league investigation! Integrity of the game!

Nice Win. Good night all..

So happy for Brady and the Pats. Also pretty glad it's the Falcons. I know Atlanta looked like a machine today... Pats back in the game!!

Has the league confiscated Brady's phone to see if he was involved in the fire alarm?
-
Bennett dancing with the pom poms was pretty special.
Really solid performance tonight.
Well earned trip back to another SB.
GO PATS!
-
Just can't say enough about the organization. Really just a well-oiled machine. Bob Kraft's speech was a bit worrisome in terms of his slurred speech. Hopefully it's not a sign of something wrong in the health department.
-
This team, man. Just absolutely incredible.

HAHA TP for you sir
-
I know that Pats have had a pretty easy run to the SB but to do this without Brady for 4 games and essentially without Gronk for most of the season is extraordinary.
-
Great overall performance in this game. I really, really, REALLY hope they can win another SB.
-
Congrats guys.

Congrats guys.
Are you not a Pat's fan LB?

i don't really follow the NFL. All my family root for the Pats. I root for them whenever they are on, but most years the only game I watch is the SuperBowl. I'm happy for those of you that are true Pats fans. It seems it would be fitting if Bradley won after the nonsense that happened this year.

Avery Bradley is on the Patriots?
I joke, I kid, I know you meant Tommy Touchdown..

Lol I didn't do that intentionally. Good ol Tommy Bradley.

I guess that shows how focused I am on the Celtics compared to the Pats.
-
Bradley threw for 384 yards and 3 Touchdowns. The yards were a career high in the postseason.
TP for the awesome picture.
-
BTW. Matt Ryan, You can Have the MVP.
Meanwhile, Brady will collect his fifth Championship, in seven appearances.

Ryan will win MVP and he deserves it. Fantastic year for him.
Hopefully Tommy can get #5. That should solidify him as GOAT. And hes not done yet!!!

Nah, he was just having a good time like many other fans and was a bit sauced.

Probably why he missed the last few games.

I noticed that. I was wondering:

- rain freeze
- couldnt hear anything

Bennett on Goodell
"Where is he? It's like Waldo".

Saw this on reddit, found it funny, and thought the right place to share is probably.
Apparently Gronk manipulated his FT shooting at high school bball to keep the score at 69.

Not going to lie. REALLY nervous about this game.
Two years ago, we played a SEA team with an ELITE defense + pretty good offense.
Now we play an ATL team with an ELITE offense + pretty good defense.
Should be a fun battle but I'd really hope the Patriots can win a Super Bowl by a margin greater than 4 lol (all their SB games are won/lost by a margin of 4 or less).
PREDICTION: 31-23 Patriots (Defense makes a clutch stop LATE in the 4th)
