Title: Which NBA player are you most similar to?
Post by: Celtic Fan Forever on May 05, 2016, 08:24:39 PM
I thought this would be a fun exercise, as I assume a good portion of us play in some sort of rec league if we're not ultra-talented collegiates or professionals.

For my NBA comparison, I have to go with Goran Dragic mixed with a little bit of Ginobili.

I'm a small lefty guard who's not overly athletic, but quick and decisive. I'm not going to jump over you, however I still manage to get to the rim a lot due to craftiness and some deceptive moves. I've been working on my floater since I was a small child, as I was always short and needed to get my shot over bigger defenders.

I was raised by a father who was a basketball coach, so I think my IQ is fairly high and I'm comfortable handling the ball and running the point. My jumper is not always consistent but when it starts falling I get into a rhythm pretty quickly. I guess I'm a little streaky you could say.

Anyways, curious to see how some of you guys play. Who's joining me on the Celticsblog all-star team?  ;D

They called me Wildthing back in the day.   I made so many unorthodox shots.  My mid range game and ability to score around the basket lead to All San Diego/Southern California in 1995!   Yep the count down to 40 begins!

Now I'm shorter and 250.  Now they call me Jay Diggles, the only moves i have now is on the dance floor.  Out there I have more moves than a U-Haul.

So basically, I still have the foot work.   I'm a little bit of Even Turner/Bird and Paul Piece!   Its not always pretty when it comes to Paul and Bird.....    But my handles and spin move are pretty like Turner.

Cheers.... Happy Cinco de Drinko!

Eddie house before i injured my wrist. Tried emulating PP's game but sadly only could manage the step back. I could shoot with very quick release even with a hand in my face, i defend better than eddie(was known for my d) but like eddie, cannot play point or dribble drive or backcourt pass or rebound

Honestly I think I'm a hybrid of Marcus smart and Avery Bradley.

I pride myself on my defense, and I always take on the scorer or the main ball handler (more Avery than Marcus)
I am a very streaky shooter, and I might go on super long cold streaks, but when I'm hot, boy am I hot (Marcus)
I'm admittedly a little chubby, but also I feel I'm somewhat built/swole given my height (5'10") (Marcus)
I'm a little out of control when I drive to the rim, and I feel I'm fouled a lot but don't get calls (Marcus)
I have a normal haircut and I don't flop (Avery)

I guess you could say I'm mostly Marcus smart, with a touch of Avery Bradley too

This is a fun post, OP. Here's a TP

I think my game is pretty similar to gerald wallace's with a post game.
I'm a good defender and shotblocker and not afraid to dive after loose balls or to take a charge.
But I'm not a great shooter or ball handler and I rely mostly on my athleticism to score.

I'm kind of like a non athletic tony Allen who can't really jump. I'm 6'4 with a 6'10 wingspan, and I can't shoot. I pride myself on "containment" defense, namely making sure their shot is contested. Not big on steals, but once in awhile it's a block party out here. Can play bigger than my size on the boards due to good fundamentals on boxing out (grew early so I was always a undersized center or big forward at medium sized schools) and my nutty long arms.

My offensive game is mainly cutting hard to the basket. If I have a big size mismatch I can take it in the post and do post fades pretty well.

Mostly I'm used as a roll man on the wing because I can set hard screens. If I'm feeling good that day I can also dribble and pass pretty well. If we are up I like to do no look passes lol. Was addicted to rondo fakes for awhile.

Steve Novak.  Deadly 3-point shooter (although I wasn't that deadly) but otherwise basically worthless if the shot wasn't falling.

I was very competitive and did give 100% effort on defense even if I was getting repeatedly torched by others guys though.  So what the heck, toss a little bit of KG in there  :D

Ha! This is a good thread.

This is going to sound really awkward, but here it goes - a much better offensive version and lesser defensive version of Smart.

When I was at my best (after getting tired of being a benchwarmer in college and just playing pick-up and rec ball), I was 5'10" 210 lbs. with 10% body fat. I'm built much more like a football player than a basketball player. I can't jump, I'm slow, and I have t-rex arms, but I have a quick first step.

Offensively, I'd try and overpower the defense on penetration and drives (like Smart), but I was a better ballhandler than Smart and a much, much better shooter. I had 50/40/75 seasons my junior and senior years in basketball, and I averaged 24 and 8 and 22 and 8 those years in points and assists (small school and conference, obviously).

Defensively, I'd play the physical, on-ball D like Smart, and I've always been a good team-defender.

If I played now, I'd look like Sully out there  :P ;D

Tyler Hansbrough.

Good post game, with solid midrange game.

Good positioning on defense, but lack athletic ability to make a lot of big plays.

Quality rebounder, though height and lack of jumping sometimes hampers that.

Will not back down from anyone, and am not afraid to get a little dirty. I also can set a mean pick.

But an extremely,  extremely poor man's Hansbrough.

See, I'm just the opposite. I was a skilled player who had 0 athleticism to work with. It amazes me how much basketball relies on good athleticism. I've always cursed my parents for ultimately making me shorter and not very athletic.  ;D

I'm average height, below average wingspan, I try hard to box out, stay with my man, play physical defense, and keep the ball moving, but I don't have very good athleticism aside from decent speed and endurance for my size. I can handle the ball a little bit and finish a little bit but I have zero moves and I'm purely a straight line driver. I have no range beyond fifteen feet or so.

I dunno, who does that sound like to you?

I always aspire to play like guys who get by in the league on the strength of hustle and defense and passing... Raja Bell and Shane Battier were my favorites once upon a time. But those guys could shoot.

I should say, I never played organized basketball beyond age seven and I didn't start trying to play basketball again until I was a sophomore in college and I was shooting hoops over the summer with friends from home.

But I've now reached a point where I don't totally embarrass myself when I play pickup, so that's something.  :)

Great topic, as it is one we have always thought of. I am also glad to see people taking it seriously, rather than just going with the biggest stars.

I used to say I played a lot like Jamison - a little unorthodox, solid rebounder, but could handle the ball and score off the dribble (for a bigger guy) in a number of different ways. I think in the current NBA, I would say Paul Millsap for similar reasons.

I am 6'5" without shoes, not overly athletic and shorter wingspan, but can still dunk at 36; hate when people make me play center. I consider myself a 'forward' (I guess they call it a 'swing' nowadays). I prefer to make my move off the dribble, but have a killer hook shot down low  :P Defense is also solid, but unspectacular.

I absolutely hate going up against some of you Marcus Smart types. See how effective Smart was against Millsap - that would totally throw me off my game, too.

That's interesting Future of Stevens. Do you buy into the theory that Really long arms make it harder to shoot from deep, but better for Rebounding and defense.

IT to be honest.  We're similar heights, and I'm a scoring PG (at the old man pickup level now, of course) who drives aggressively, finishes well at the rim from creative angles, and can hit 3s off the catch and dribble.  I'm a lot streakier, though.  I can't finish with my left like him, or at all,  but I've got a step-back midrange bank shot that he can't touch, so 1-1 baby  ;)

At 5'8" and with a rugby background, my job was as a guard who could pass, run all game and defend (except against hight). I could intimidate. It was best I didn't dribble or shoot too much, other guys did that. So I don't know if that is like anybody in the NBA?

Ok, take Spencer Hawes' game, right.. now put it in Isaiah Thomas' body. There you go.

But that's when I'm rusty (right now). When I practice I'm sort of a Marcus Smart/Avery Bradley hybrid. Better shooter than Marcus (relative to my competition), worse handles like Avery. Always a good defender.

Take pride in my defense, capable of guarding 1-5 on the courts that I play on. 6'2 with a 6'8 wingspan, I try to run my matchup ragged with long strides. Not afraid to mix it up, set good screens, but lately I've gone cold from the field. I can pass well and try to be a high steals and blocks guy. When I saw footage of Bobby Jones from the 70's and 80's I thought it was a pretty good fit.

More modern I'd probably say Andrei Kirilenko.

Well yea they as you know are better for rebounding and defense. I don't really know where I fall on the long arms debate. Most of my life I kind of used the big hands shooting argument to explain away my shooting woes. Interestingly enough, I could never shoot the deep ball, but my senior year of high school I shot 86% from the ft line. I don't really know where that fits into the long arm theory.

I think that shooting is mostly mental/repetition. I never developed a long range routine, because people saw the 6'0 6th grader, and believed the doctors who said he would be 6'11.  Well once I stopped growing in 8th grade, I never had developed any shooting skills, so I never got that shooting from deep foundation down to pump up the repetition.

So long story short I'm on the fence with it, I know of the correlation that exists, but I'm not sure it effects much KG.

This one is interesting haha... I'd say a mix of Durant, Lavine and Curry. I've got Curry's release and am very good at threes, which is my calling card- but I'm long and athletic like Durant (6'3 with 6'7 wingspan) and love playing in transition/dunking. Still, I love shooting threes so I'd say more Curry.

When I was younger my game was very similar to Shawn Marion except I am 6 feet and didn't quite have the hops he did. I am a great rebounder for my size and shot better than Marion even though my form was exactly the same as him.  My game changed when I was about 27 getting undercut hurting my back.  I lost some hops after that injury. Ever since then(I am 42 now) I pretty much am just a shooter. Game very similar to Peja Stojakovic.

Hmmm. That's a tough one. I guess I'd say Marcus Smart if he could shoot. I never stopped hustling on the court, and it infected my teammates. Getting rebounds I shouldn't, a couple hustle-driven possession changes a game. My defense is lockdown if I do say so myself. I pretty much always matched up with the other teams best player.

I'm an adequate driver, adequate passer, adequate handles. Strong shooter from all over the floor, I shot 85% from the line senior year. Great at moving without the ball, but limited ability to create my own shot although I have a mean turn around jumper I hit consistently. I can read the P&R well and have tight enough handles to be the main ball-handler when need be.

So yeah I guess kind of like Marcus with a better shot if Marcus played Mass HS ball.

Proportionaly thin with long arms, solid shot block timing and anticipation, good lateraly, willing passer, not much of an agressive scorer or a long range shooter. I love to play defense. Heck, we even bare the same initials :)

This was my life in the late seventies/ early eighties at Southie High (during busing) and Dorcherster Men's open Leagues: I only played high school and men's open league ball but I would have to say Dave Cowens (even at 6'1"). I lived for rebounds and hustle plays. That Cowens play where he's eating the floor and the ball trying to get possession, THAT WAS ME.  The rule on my summer league teams was, If your not willing to dive for loose balls on concrete, I don't want you, no matter how good you think you are. We three-peeted then we retired the squad. We had some ex college players and some who should have gone to college (if they could keep their sh**together and stay off drugs) I was the sm. forward/2 guard that was in your face and up your shirt, p---ing you off and getting in your head and you off your game.  +/- 12PTS AND 12-14 RPG and 2 or 3 cuts/scrapes PG.. One of the most fun time of my life.  Great memories, Absolutely loved it!!!!

I rebound, can score some around the hoop, cant shoot worth a Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline., and have some otherworldly passing ability once every blue moon. Mostly I rely on out-working and out-hustling opponents and my superior athleticism (which is no longer superior now that I'm 30)

I'm basically 2010 Avery Bradley.

- Bad, heavily streaky shooter

- Pretty much no offensive game at all, bad at finishing, bad passes all over the court, can't run a proper offense, some good cuts once in a while

- Skinny and quick as hell

- Good defender, also guarding bigger guys and getting steals. Defense pretty much the one thing I'm in the game, getting all my confidence from it.

Although it depends a little bit who I'm playing against, if it's just my good friends, then I'm playoff Rondo :)

I am Brandon Bass.

Like, I wish I could pass and I move ok without the ball, but I'm horrible at seeing the floor and finding cutters so all I can really do in that department is move it along or stick and make my own move.

I can hit my short-to-midrange jumpers and I take them in rhythm with zero hesitation.

I set good screens. I compete hard on the boards and on defense. Somehow this always gets me lined up opposite someone who is either way faster than me or way bigger.

I would have to be a combination of Dennis Rodman and a great shot blocker. I could rebound better then about anyone else my size. One day I blocked a guy's shot by simply touching the ball and letting him catch and shoot again and then I blocked it again. I thought about why it happnd this way and it hit me that it was too easy to just block his shot so I would just barely touch it, eough to alter his shot, let him catch it and shoot again and then block it again.

On the other end, I could not shoot to save my life. I once air balled a free throw on a shot that came on a foul as the halftime buzzer had gone off and no one else was on the court. Man that sucked!
