Mike Moser
Quote
Moser has made a quality first impression, separating himself from some of his roster competition during four days of practice leading up to Saturday's summer league opener, then logging a bench-high 24 minutes, 33 seconds of floor time while putting up 17 points (on 6-of-11 shooting) with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and a block in Boston's 85-77 triumph over the Miami Heat.

Kevin Jones
Quote
The 6-foot-8, 251-pound forward has made a fast impression. On the second day of camp, Pacers assistant coach Dan Burke (who is running the camp and coaching the team’s Summer League entry in Orlando) was asked which players had stood out to him so far. Jones’ name was the first (and only) one he mentioned.

“Kevin, he’s got ability to use his body, create angles,” Burke said on Wednesday. “He runs the floor, he shoots the mid-range jumper. He’s a great rebounder…He’s that one that’s really jumped out for me.

Marcus Smart vs Donald Sloan
While Smart is a rookie, Sloan appeared in 48 games for the Pacers last season.   The 6'3" Sloan started at point guard in the Pacers' loss to the Nets and finished with 21 points, (6-11) with 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Smart started the Celtics win over Miami at the 2 but transitioned to the point when Pressey went to the bench.  He finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals.  While he struggled on offense at times,  Smart's defense was noteworthy.

Game Notes:  Summer League is a strange creature where getting to look at players and evaluate them trumps wins and losses.  While teams like to get wins, the goal is to evaluate players, especially the undrafted free agents trying to make an impression.

The Celtics had 4 players who did not play in the first game and we should see them play in this game with others sitting out this one.  James Young is doubtful for this game once again with the neck injury he sustained in a car accident before the draft.

The Pacers had 3 players who did not play and, as with the Celtics, we should see those players get playing time in this one, while others who played in the first game will get a rest.  Since game rosters aren't listed ahead of time, it's hard to list matchups or probable starting lineups.

After today's game, the Celtics next play at 7:00 PM ET when their opponents will be the Detroit Pistons.

Boston on a 9-0 run. Marcus Smart is everywhere on the defensive end. I think already has 2 steals.

Moser already has made a 3 pt shot, 2 reb, 1 assist

Is anyone else slightly disappointed that Vitor isn't playing summer league? Did he play last year? Since he's our only signed C other than Anthony, I'd like to get a look at what kind of playing shape he's in.

Maybe not the right forum but I suspect a lot of those horrible Knick moves he made were at the behest of Dolan. That Francis trade/pairing with Starbury experiment was beyond asinine and everyone knew it would be terrible before it even happened. I've never like Isiah(mostly for petty basketball rivalry reasons), but I give him more credit than to believe he thought that would be a good idea. Dolan, on the other hand.........

You can't foul out in summer league, I thought? No reason to be stingy with the minutes because of a few made up calls.

the celtics were terrible last year. why does the current situation surprise you? this is what bad teams do, they lose.

say what you will about Smart's Rondo-esque shooting ability.   I still think he's going to be a stud defender off the bench, a good long-term contributor with starter potential... and I refuse to believe that we would have been better off accidentally making the playoffs with a sub-500 record, getting swept by the Pacers in 4 games... and getting stuck with someone like Adriene Payne with the #15 pick.    Smart should be a much better asset heading forward.  We need all the assets we can get.

Seems like Smart's much talked about strength hasn't been much of a factor for him offensively so far. Having a lot of trouble finishing inside, keeps getting swallowed up by bigs. Hope to see him make adjustments for that as the week goes on.

He made some ridiculous comments in a game I was watching during the first day of summer league.

The game was a blowout and the losing coach had the main guys in at the end with far too little time to come back. Isiah explained this as the team having pride and not wanting to lose. This guy is clueless if he thinks keeping them in was due to ego. Not everyone is an egoist like you, Isiah.

The players were in because it is a summer league game and the teams want to see the guys play. The final score doesn't dictate lineups. Preparing for the camp is what dictates lineups.

Anyone who thinks Smart is doomed for his bad shooting % these last few days should take a look at MCW's box score from last year.

Honestly though his shot will come along. As long as he plays hard defense he'll get minutes and improve game by game this year.

Agreed... can't read too much into summer league.  Joe Forte won MVP one year... and Marcus Banks once dropped 42 points ((13-19 FG), 80% from long range (4-5 3FG) and 86% from the charity stripe (12-14 FT))... Smart, like Banks, might end up having a humbling season... we'll see how he reacts.  Maybe in a couple years he will drop 42 points in summerleague too.

I didn't condemn Smart. I liked the Smart pick but felt Payton had equal or greater potential as a prospect. Since the Sixers, Magic, and Celtics all had early picks and one in the teens, it would have been nice if we had gotten two top-level prospects instead of one and a half. However, I know it probably wasn't possible because Gordon had separated himself from the 6-7-8 range and Payton had elevated his stock way past 17.

The Celtics did the best with what they had but if the lottery balls had bounced differently or if some player had dropped just one pick later it could have made a huge difference in the talent haul.

It was brought up in reference to Lance Stephenson, and whoever Isiah's cohost was said Ainge was making a run at LS, then Thomas said "I was talking to Bird before the game, and Danny Ainge walked by and they didn't say a word to each other"

They came back from commercial to a Stephenson clip package and the announcer said ESPN reported the Celtics "have an interest" in Stephenson. Thomas joked that well he was talking to Larry before the game and Ainge walked past and he "noticed they didn't speak to each other. Now I know why," after which both Thomas and the announcer had a good laugh. Thomas went on to joke that "All is fair in love and war, and this is war."

Then the cameraman got a shot of both Ainge and Bird in the stands and the announcer said they were sitting 15-20 feet apart, then wondered "How many secrets are in this room right now in terms of negotiations and discussions." Thomas then said "everybody's plotting to get each other's players."

They were clearly joking but if the report is true you would think maybe there is some awkwardness there between both GMs during this particular free agent period. I'm sure they're used to it though since both are long time GMs who probably see each other around all the time.

Horrible game, for everyone. Olynyk was as bad today as he was good Saturday. dropping the ball, throwing it away. everybody just looked flat.
sort of surprised because with the players that Boston has on the floor for this Summer League you would think they'd have somewhat of an edge.
most depressing was they came out strong, had an 18 point lead in the first quarter and it just went to crap from there.

I thought that big of theirs, Reed killed us.   Iverson and Olynyk and our bigs were destroyed.   That had just as much if not more than the not shooting.   They imposed their will on us down low with a power game.  He had 5 blocks and this is what a rim protector can do for a team.

Many shots fell short and I think the lads were tired.

About us having an edge.  Sloan played like 40 NBA games last year for Indy.   Pressey had more games played  as did Olynyk.   Johnson and Babb played some too due to the tankage but they look like they belong in Summer League and D league the first too games.   Moser came back to earth.  The Anosuke kid was horrible.

Marcus and Pressey are not reliable shooters.

It was one game, going to enjoy the " sky is falling" on our guys playing bad that always happens at Celtic Blog.

I'm not really sure what people see in Pressey.  He's confident and tries hard, but for every smart play he makes he forces the ball or struggles with another.  I could have tinted glasses on but I felt like Smart did a better job at the point in both games.  Smart moves the ball, makes the drop pass in pick and roles and steps through doubles.  Pressey dribbles it out like he's freakin' Rondo.  Add in his subpar D and bad shooting and he doesn't have much to offer in my mind...maybe a good attitude?

Interested to here others thoughts...I try not to judge to harshly on young players and Pressey is still a young player.

Our bigs were awful...and if you watched the game through the Summer League App on your iPad you had an in game shot chart...it was force to the rack or a three every time.  Hopefully Smart learned some lessons about how much quicker bigs are at the next level...he needs a floater or to shield the ball better.

What I saw today....Pressey still can't shoot.  KO still can't guard anyone.  And he totally sucked offensively, almost from the beginning.  That doesn't bother me.  Getting abused defensively by D League talent does.   Smart I wouldn't be concerned about right now.  It's obvious his shooting technique needs work and I wasn't impressed by him playing the 1, but he's just starting out.

No one else who played did anything of note.

Well Moser hit a few shots but that's it.  I couldn't believe how bad KO looked. Missing wide open shots, evn close in, terrible defense on Willie Reed, turned the ball over, bad switching on defense...

I hope we see better of Smart soon.

This blow out was not KO s fault......the rest of the team just fell to pieces ....he couldn't bring them back when he is the only person on the court

and tomorrow's another day. i dont think pressey, olly, and smart(y) are as bad as their performance today. somedays a team stinks, and this was one of them.

onward and upward to another summer league game. heck, maybe even moser will perk up and play right.

i am not discouraged. it is fun to watch the kids play.

Pressy is a good kid who tries hard, but he sucks. I hope he gets cut this year. Besides KO Smart, and Young, who we are keeping regardless of their play in these games, the only player on this summer league roster who I would possibly consider keeping is Moser. Everyone else sucks badly.

I wouldn't say he sucks.  He's a decent NBA caliber PG who is undersized and unfortunately can't shoot.  His shooting is what's going to determine whether he stays in the league long term.  I can see him as one of those guys who bounces around the league, makes the veteran minimum and has to fight for his spot each year.   Right now whether he sticks with the Celtics or not is probably not in his hands.  It depends on what the rest of the roster's going to look like and how ready Smart and Young are ready to be part of a rotation - assuming of course that both are still here on opening night.  ;)
