Title: ETA on fixing the board?
Post by: LarBrd33 on June 27, 2014, 05:46:39 PM
Just curious when some of the nagging problems of this forum will be fixed.

It seems like it's been well over a month now and still every time people cut-and-paste text from other sites, it turns ' into ?

Example:

Quote
The Celtics. What?s the plan here? The Celtics tanked this season, and it wasn?t until they tried to trade for Love that we all realized quite how barren that roster is. Beyond draft picks, all they had to offer were guys like Kelly Olynyk, Jeff Green and his gigantic deal, Jared Sullinger ? It was a pretty depressing reality check.

Also, what's the deal with the "quote" and "modify" buttons being hidden unless you mouse over them?  Not a problem if you're using a desktop, but kind of a pain in the butt on a mobile device, because you have to guess where those buttons are.

I think the quote thing has something to do with ' getting turned into `  ... but weird that ` converts to "?" once you post.

Is the quote-to-question mark thing ever going to be fixed?  It's pretty annoying.  I did a really brief google search and it looks like it's a common issue that should be fixable.

Am I really the only person who cares about this?  It's been a year.  Every time I cut and paste an article it turns the quotes into question marks.  I think I'm mildly OCD or something, I always end up having to fix it manually.

I did a google search... there's a bunch of threads about how to fix this issue.  Who is your web developer?

It's certainly annoying, I've gone through and manually changed everything in multiparagraph posts before

Good news, bad news here I guess:

Good News: the post has been read 578 and counting times.

Bad News: Crickets

 :)

Sorry for stating the obvious. Couldn't resist. TP for your persistence.

EDIT: I type slowly...Q made the "crickets" thing not quite as telling, but telling nonetheless.

I'll cut and paste IMDB's top 25 movie quotes of all time, but I'll leave the question mark conversion in-tact for maximum annoyance.   It changes all of the famous quotes into unsure questions.  They all sound so pensive and uncertain.  Read them with the question marks... it's delightful.

Quote
Sudden Impact (1983)
    ?Go ahead. Make my day?

    Casablanca (1942)
    ?Here's looking at you, kid?

    Casablanca (1942)
    ?Round up the usual suspects?

In the Heat of the Night (1967)
    ?They call me Mister Tibbs!?

    The Wizard of Oz (1939)
    ?There's no place like home?

    A Few Good Men (1992)
    ?You can't handle the truth!?

    Grand Hotel (1932)
    ?I want to be alone?

    When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
    ?I'll have what she's having?

    Apollo 13 (1995)
    ?Houson, we have a problem?

    Jerry Maguire (1996)
    ?You had me at 'hello'?

A League of Their Own (1992)
    ?There's no crying in baseball!?

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    ?Mein F?rher! I can walk!?

    Chinatown (1974)
    ?Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown?

    Goldfinger (1964)
    ?A martini. Shaken, not stirred?

    Pretty Woman (1990)
    ?I want the fairy tale?

    Jurassic Park (1993)
    ?Life will find a way?

    The Wild Bunch (1969)
    ?If they move, kill' em!?

    Babe (1995)
    ?That'll do, pig. That'll do?

A Cry in the Dark (1988)
    ?The dingo took my baby!?

    The Fly (1986)
    ?Be afraid. Be very afraid?

    The Hustler (1961)
    ?Eddie, you're a born loser?

    Kings Row (1942)
    ?Where's the rest of me??

    The Maltese Falcon (1941)
    ?You're good. You're very good?

    Scream (1996)
    ?Do you like scary movies??

    The Warriors (1979)
    ?Warriors, come out to play!?

Would anyone like to offer answers to the above questions?

It's not a high priority issue for SB Nation.  We'd have to hire a subcontractor to fix the issue, and for a fairly minor issue, that won't happen.  Most likely, we're going to just have to live with it until the next round of forum upgrades, whenever that may be.

Has anyone found a work-around?

Seems if you cut-and-paste your quote into notepad/textedit and then find-and-replace all the fancy quotes with basic quotes it might work.

 I'll try:

Quote
Sudden Impact (1983)
    "Go ahead. Make my day"

    Casablanca (1942)
    "Here's looking at you, kid"

    Casablanca (1942)
    "Round up the usual suspects"

In the Heat of the Night (1967)
    "They call me Mister Tibbs!"

    The Wizard of Oz (1939)
    "There's no place like home"

    A Few Good Men (1992)
    "You can't handle the truth!"

    Grand Hotel (1932)
    "I want to be alone"

Yeah... it's the pesky superquotes that cause the issue.  My google search showed it had something to do with the forum's defined font and how it interprets those special quotes.

can we still hang out here and get a little more off color than usual?

that far research is amazing. I have shared that with a lot of people. Interesting implications.

Yeah, we partially fixed the issue, to the point where not every cut-and-paste gives the error.  However, there are quite a few sites that still present the issue.
