Game Notes
The Celtics face the Atlanta Hawks at home after a winless road trip.  This is the 3rd of 4 meetings between these two teams.  The Celtics won the first game in Atlanta 94-87 and then fell to the Hawks in Boston on New Year's Eve 92-91.  They meet once more in April.

The Celtics hope to get Avery Bradley back in the starting lineup after he missed the road trip to rehab an ankle injury.  They may also get to see Vitor Faverani once again.  It would be great to see Jared Sullinger in this game but he needs to pass the NBA's concussion tests before he can get back on the court.

The Hawks have some injury problems of their own with 5 players either out or questionable.  They are also playing in the second of back to back games after hosting the Bulls on Tuesday night.  The Celtics have had a day off after their 4 game west coast swing but the first game back after a road trip is always a tough one to win.

The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games and have lost their last 5 games.   The Hawks are 2-8 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are 11-17 at home while the Hawks are 9-19 on the road.

Atlanta is tied with Charlotte for the 7th and 8th spots in the East.  They are just half a game behind the 6th spot and 1.5 games back of the 5th seed.  The Celtics have the 4th worst record in the league and are 2 ahead of Orlando and 2.5 games behind the Knicks.  They are also 8.5 games out of the playoffs.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4624.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jeff Teague
Rondo returns from a rest in the last game along with a nice birthday party.  Teague is a good young point guard and leads the Hawks with 15.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 7.1 assists.  This should be a good matchup

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4247.jpg)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3754.jpg)
Jeff Green vs Kyle Korver
Korver is always a threat to put up big numbers.  He is especially dangerous from beyond the arc where he has a record 124 consecutive games with at least one 3 pointer.

Keys to the Game
Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics have yet to put together an entire game where they play well. They have periods where they play great and then they have periods when they can't hit a shot and can't defend.  They have to find some way to be consistent from start to finish.

Defense - The Hawks depend on the three to score. They are 3rd in the league attempting 24.9 3 pointers a game and they are 2nd in the league, making 9.4 3's per game and are making 37.7% of their shots from beyond the arc. They have several good shooters from distance and the Celtics must up their perimeter defense.  They also have to defend the paint better.  They have been allowing way too many easy points in the paint.

Rebound - The Celtics must crash the boards as a team, especially the guards. Rebounding takes effort and the Celtics must be the team that wants the win more and the team that wins the rebounding battle.

Set the Pace - The Celtics have to run on every possession. The Celtics have built leads in games by pushing the ball and getting easy shots before the defenses set up.  Part of the reason they have given up those leads is that they stop running, stop pushing the ball inside, and stop moving the ball. They have to keep up the pace for the entire game.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to be the more aggressive team in going after loose balls, in rebounding, in defending, and in rebounding.  They have to be aggressive in taking the ball inside and not settling for outside shots, especially when they aren't falling.

X-Factors

Injuries and Back Home
Both teams have been hit with the injury bug.  Who plays and who is still out could determine a lot in this game.
The Celtics are back at home and that should give them a boost.

I am taking my son and a couple of his friends to the game tonight.  Atlanta on a Wed night = cheap tickets.  He was hoping that Sully would play but I don't think that's going to happen.

According to twitter, Bradley and Sully are out tonight, you need a new prediction  :D

We win this one regardless, Atlanta is free falling and on b2b

There's NO WAY we lose this game. I guess its a win-win (or lose-lose if you're a half-empty guy).

We win, the Hawks record gets worse and enhances their draft position from which we gain. Hurts our own pick a little, but March will come in and go out like a lion, so hopefully our draft position isn't hurt too much.

We lose, and our draft position gets better, but theirs gets worse.

Their entire frontcourt, except for Brand is OUT.

http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/atlanta-hawks-injury-update-feb-26-2014

Antic, Ayon, Milsap and of course Horford as well as SG Jenkins.

Our frontcourt will destroy them. I think we win by 25. We'll be pretty angry after an embarrassing West Coast 0-fer and their so beat up, there's no way they can win.

Caveat: These were the types of games I would go broke on when I used to gamble.

Disappointed to hear Olynyk not playing.  One of the fun aspects of this season is to watch the progress of young guys and I think KO has been slowly improving his comfort level out there.  I know it is bad form on this thread to discuss rooting for a loss, so I'll just say I won't be disappointed by a loss.  Atlanta is irrelevant (IMO) in the race for the pick -- it's really all about Brooklyn.  I am very confident the Hawks will fall to the lottery with or without a win tonight.

Anyway, I hope JG continues to be aggressive and Rondo continues his climb to get back to 100%.

Rondo is shooting FTs at a 74% clip (higher than that if he continues his good FT shooting tonight) -- 12% above his career average.  Of course, sample size is far too small.

At what point will you begin to believe in his FT shooting?  I used to say that 70% was the benchmark I'd like to see from him.  It would be great if he is really getting there.

Or has the law of averages just not caught up yet?

Man, Rondo has got to make those layups. I don't know if it's because of the injury, but those kind of attack the basket moves is what made him very good.

A bit of an off topic question?

But where can I get those Anta shoes?

Never even implied we were. Just don't like us winning against better teams with no breathing room. And I hate the Lakers with a passion so if we dont finish below them OR beat them with the ping pong balls I will be pretty p---ed.
Hawks aren't better than us though, they're what 1-10 in the last 11 games and were tired?

Injuries and fatigue have crushed their squad, their record and point differential are all reflections of the team with Millsap and Horford. Without those two the team is every bit a bottom 5 squad.

Horrible win tonight. So close to having the Magic catch us and being in 3rd place. Now the lakers leapfrog us and we become virtually tied with like 3 other teams for the 5th worst record.

Hopefully the Pacers obliterate us and and squash any sense of team spirit this team has left.

True but Sullinger, Bradley, and Olynyk are all out too...And the Hawks are playing back to back so are probably tired.

Midway through the first, RR wasn't going to let us lose this one... he carried us then we woke up. Great job RR and Bayless. Good game by all who played once we woke up.

We're gonna get the W here! Yes!

Atlanta is fading fast, we could sneak into that 8th seed!

I wouldnt even watch the series. Anything less than the 5th worst record is a dissapointment honestly.

Would honestly be an awful series, would be a wasted year, and would set us up for further mediocrity.. How anybody could root for the 8th seed is beyond me

Good win at home. Rondo looks like's getting back to speed.

I wonder if Bayless will continue to start.

Im sorry but some of us thinks that the season being a wash is just the a bright side and still rooting for wins.

You play to win the game remember? I get the "we're better in the future" talk. I've heard that a ton from LrBrd33. And I agree, but we still root for winning, regardless if it's the 8th seed.

Knowing Stevens, he'll score 8 points next game and immediately be relegated back to the bench.

The Memphis Grizzlies play to win the game.

The Boston Celtics play (and in this case lose) to win Championships 8)

not too worried we won this. atlanta is horrible right now...and we have their/brooklyns pick. so any brooklyn/atlanta loss is a good one!

Plus, look at our upcoming schedule. pretty brutal.

Yeah other than the Knicks/Pistons games at home we're decided underdogs in every single game in March iirc.

Its the NBA so you never know what randomness is going to happen on a given night, but for those tankers upset at the win remember we managed to get swept by Scaramento, Jazz, Lakers immediately prior to this game.

We still suck.

No, that's more of a Stevens thing: dude has no rotation so people go on and off his starting lineup for no apparent reason.

Although ultimately this stems from having no real system: having a system means you know what you're trying to achieve on the court, and thus have a good idea which players can execute it best.

I'm sorry but the following two posts just baffle me as to why you would want the Celtics to lose out on a playoff slot.  now I understand that even though it's ridiculously improbable to advance from the eight spot, it is not totally impossible to win a championship because guess what, you just made the playoffs and if you caught Miami in the first round you know freaky things happen with the C's and the Heat.  tanking is one thing but to not want to watch your team in the playoffs, takes the cake!!!

You're right I did say that. Quote me on it all day please, because it's true. The only reason this team could make the playoffs is because the eastern conference is so awful and that's no way to win...

Guess what, you know what a 4 game series against the Pacers or Heat would look like? Pretty much the same way every game we play against a contender this year looks like... a blowout, embaressing loss.

So where does that leave us... this same roster and the 16th seed? Great we'll work our way up to medicore. We can just be the Hawks now.

Guess what...2008 wouldn't have happened without the 5th pick in the draft, getting Ray here and KG agreeing to resign. Guess what... we don't improve as a team unless we get a top pick, an asset, in this draft, which we either get an impact player or make a trade like 07. DA isn't stupid, he knows he needs the pick, and he isn't going to mess around with it like tank teams without a plan like the Cavs and Bobcats do. This is part of the plan.

I watch every game I can because I want to see the young players develop. So I'm not a fair weather fan. But I'd be foolish to root for a playoff spot. I want to contend again... not be a feel good story. This is the Celtics, it's championship or bust, not garbage team made it to the playoffs and got blown out. We don't need the playoffs to feel good like Raptors or Wizards or Bobcats do. We just don't...

Just because it's bad basketball in a Celtics jersey doesn't mean that it isn't bad basketball. I'd root for the Celtics to win if they grabbed the 8th slot, obviously, but it'd be hard to watch them get run out of the gym in a four or five game series against Indiana or Miami.

I think anybody who is posting here right now or during a weeknight game btw two subpar Hawks/Celtics squads would fall outside the realm of "fair weather fan".

Questioning their fanhood wouldn't exactly be the right route to go...

At one point I thought the tankers "losing" philosophy was for the possibility of getting a top draft pick but what we have here are people not wanting the C's to make the playoffs just because of their bad record!!!  I'm sorry but that's ludicris. do you know how many real fans are pulling for their team to sneak into the 8 spot.
at least the tankers have a end game to their theory but to just root for your team to lose because thier record isn't good enough for you....then yes, I am questioning your fanhood!!!
