Game Notes
The Celtics welcome Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to the Garden for the first time since the trade.  It will be an emotional homecoming for them and for the fans who will undoubtedly show them much love when they are introduced.

This is the second of 4 games between these two teams.  The Celtics lost the first meeting in Brooklyn 96-104.  They will meet two more times in March.

After a very slow start, the Nets have been one of the hottest teams in the league.  They have won 9 of their last 10 games and have won 4 straight.  They are coming off a 1 point win over the Mavs on Friday while the Celtics are coming off an uninspired loss to the Thunder and have lost 8 of their last 10 games.

The Nets have climbed into the playoff race and are currently in the 7th spot.  They are just 2.5 games behind the Raptors for the Atlantic Division lead and the 4th seed.   The Celtics in the meantime have dropped in the standings and are tied for the 3rd worst record in the East.  They are also just 4 games out of the playoffs.

This game will be all about the return of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and to a lesser extent Jason Terry. They will be emotional on their return, but are also competitive enough to want to beat their former team.  I'm also sure that Gerald Wallace and Kris Humphries will want very badly to beat their former team.  It should be a good game.

The Nets are mostly back to healthy with the exception of Brook Lopez.  The Celtics are struggling with injuries to Avery Bradley and Jerryd Bayless.  Jared Sullinger dislocated his finger in Friday night's game and knowing him, he'll probably be ready to play in this game,  but the injury is on his shooting hand and is bound to affect him.

Brad Stevens has said that the Celtics may have a lineup change vs the Nets.  My guess would be at the power forward spot if Sully is still hurting.  But we won't know until he gives some specifics and that might be at game time.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/jared_sullinger.png)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/paul_pierce.png)
Jared Sullinger vs Paul Pierce
The Nets have been using a rather unconventional lineup with Paul Pierce at the power forward spot.  The matchup between Pierce and Sully should be a good one if Sully is able to play in this one.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/kris_humphries.png)vs(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/kevin_garnett.png)
Kris Humphries vs Kevin Garnett
Just when KG thought he'd get to go back to his preferred position at the 4, Brook Lopez injured his foot and KG is back at the center spot.  Humphries has been playing very well but whether he can get the better of the old master remains to be seen.

Honorable Mention
Phil Pressey vs Deron Williams
Deron Williams has been coming off the bench for the Nets and this matchup doesn't seem at all fair.  Phil will have his work cut out for him against either the 6'7" Livingston or Deron Williams.

Keys to the Game

Defense - When the Celtics have lost, their defense has been in disarray.  They haven't been playing defense as a team and have been allowing teams to score way too easily.  They must get back to making tough team defense as a priority.

Run- The Celtics play best when they set the pace and run on every possession. They can get easy shots when they beat the defenses down the court. Now, the Celtics are the team with the young legs and should be able to tire the older Nets if they use that to their advantage.

Rebound- The Celtics have been doing a good job of crashing the boards as a team and they need to continue to do so. When they rebound as a team, including the guards, it gives them a much better chance of winning. The Nets have a lot of size and so it won't be easy.  The Celtics will need to put out extra effort if they want to win the rebounding battle.

Go to the Hoop - The Celtics have been shooting the ball well at times, but they tend to fall in love with the long jumpers.  And invariably they hit a dry spell when they can't hit any of their jumpers.  When they take the ball inside, good things happen. They either get an easy basket, draw a foul or have an open man to pass out to.  They have to get into the paint and not depend on jumpers.

Take Care of the Ball - Whether it was a lack of focus or the Thunder's defense, the Celtics turned the ball over way too many times on Friday.  They need to keep their focus and take better care of the ball.  Turnovers lead to easy baskets for the opponents.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics were too laid back and didn't put out the effort in the loss to the Thunder.  They need to get their aggressiveness back and drive to the basket, dive for loose balls, go after rebounds, and be aggressive on defense.

X-Factors
Focus and Emotions

Emotions will be running high on both sides and the team that can keep their focus and control their emotions the best will more than likely get the win.

I'm told the #Celtics will have two tribute videos tomorrow, one each for Kevin Garnett & Paul Pierce.

Videos tributes should go early, as there's still a game to play. KG first, Pierce second. Emotions: guaranteed.

LarB33d reminds me of a user on a different web forum that concluded, in order to justify their stance on a row they were in, that the whole of Ireland is part of the UK in the same way that Alaska is part of the states.  Post prime Rondo, gosh.

Had no interest really , but I would stay glued to the TV when he was on....i kept the faith one day somehow he'd be a Celtic and return them to their glory days.  How many years I watched KG and Celtics struggle , and finally having them together was a basketball dream come

If there's one good thing about this, it's that Red is not here to see it.

And it would NOT have happened if Red HAD been here.

Before the starting line ups, the crowd was chanting "Paul Pierce".

Announcer called KG and Pierce last.

KG got a huge applause/cheer.

Then Pierce even got a bigger applause/cheer.

Jason Kidd was announced next and crowd booed heavily.

Awkward when Rondo was announced as captain.

I see you got a previous run-down ... they were both clearly choked up.

I'm trying, trying, TRYING, to watch this game, NG, but to see these two guys in this building without green on ... it's killing me.

They just chanted "KG - KG - KG" when he sat down ... jeez, man, call me a sap, I'm having big trouble with this.

Don't think I'll make it through watching this entire game.

They'd better find some way to retire these guys in Boston ... honestly don't care what it takes.

Yeah, I know it's all "good business", I know all the "upsides", but I say screw the upsides and good business, player loyalty is worth more to me than any of the justifications.

That's my opinion ... let me choke on it.

I think you underestimate the era in which we're playing currently, the competition, the effects of the current CBA, how long of a career Pierce had as a Celtic compared to past Celtics, and how productive currently he's as a player in particular with how high of a salary he has.

So, I can easily see Red making this sort of move in this era as much as it would've pained him to make it.

I'll say this, if Ainge hadn't put the faith he put on our team 2 off-seasons ago, maybe Pierce doesn't get traded. But in order to give KG and Pierce another go as a Celtic, Ainge sacrificed our much needed future flexibility. And in order to regain it, they had to be moved in part because they underperformed, the team underperformed, and was severely unhealthy.

"That's all I can stand, and I can't stands no more."

If there's one good thing about this, it's that Red is not here to see it.

And it would NOT have happened if Red HAD been here.

This sucks.

I just tuned in and missed the pre-game.  I assume there was a tribute to KG and PP.  I'd appreciate if you (or someone) could provide a quick synopsis of the pre-game and crowd response.

It's killing me that I wasn't able to go this game in person.  I'm one of those people that was willing to suffer through another frustrating season with an aging team and delay a rebuild just to see PP and KG retire in green.

yes

KG has been my favorite NBA player period , since Bird .   It may be tuff  on me too. :'(

Pierce and KG being on another team

Just will never feel right. To me anyway

 :'(.........more tears

definitely my favorite celtic since larry legend as well. To only have two favorites over that long of a span is HUGE. It means a lot.

Yup.......was weird how devoted i was to watching KG  on a team I
Had no interest really , but I would stay glued to the TV when he was on....i kept the faith one day somehow he'd be a Celtic and return them to their glory days.  How many years I watched KG and Celtics struggle , and finally having them together was a basketball dream come
true .

That whole team in the 80's was very special to me. Larry, Chief, McHale, Ainge, and especially DJ. I really liked DJ.

RIP.  :'(

You aren't alone in feeling a sense of loss in seeing KG and Pierce tonight.  It's more than strange -- there is a feeling that it just isn't right.  I am not unhappy about the trade from a future perspective; but as for the present it is very hard to watch these guys not in green.

That said, it was an absolute pleasure to watch them play as Boston Celtics.  They personify a Celtic era -- a lasting tribute.

"That's all I can stand, and I can't stands no more."

If there's one good thing about this, it's that Red is not here to see it.

And it would NOT have happened if Red HAD been here.

This sucks.

I think it's safe to say that we can move on from the Ainge is evil incarnate and Red is infallible rhetoric.
Feel Free!

I never called or even intimated Ainge as evil incarnate or Red as infallible, (wow - he'd get a kick out of that one, lol).

However, the cool thing about being an individual is that I don't have to let go of my bitterness at this move, or believe that we would somehow have been worse off than we already are if they had stayed.

Or believe that Red would've ever let Paul Pierce play in another jersey ... not in my humble opinion, ever.

To each his own, but this sucks big-time.

Emotion cares very little for rationalization, and that's where I'm at presently, and make no apologies for it. ;)

His main problem is he gets lost on D but I like what I see in Fav he got solid offensive skills and can improve his D. Needs to be more focus on the court. I would like to trade Bass and Hump we need minutes for the young bigs.

Yeah, the away feed they're talking about that being one of Jeff's "flashes of brilliance". I'm sorry. Are you talking about a steal as a flash of brilliance? Obviously you can't be referring to the dunk on a 1 on 0 fast break...

Humphries is really trying to pad his stats...

He's already fought with Rondo (on a couple of occasions) and Green for rebounds. That turnover to Kirilenko was on him.

I don't blame him for wanting to pad his stats though, his trade value and next season's salary depend on it.

I hope we trade Jeff Green before the next game.
sadly, Chris Johnson is looking like more of a keeper than Green lately   :P

Why do I have NBA League Pass??? this game in particular I wanted to hear our announcers but noooooooo!!! had to watch ESPN who really killed the tribute.

Any hint of Jeff Green coming out of hibernation and we win this game. I'm so tired of wondering every game as to which Green hits the floor. Danny, pull the trigger and get rid of this guy before the whole league figures out what a phony he is. if he would come out and say something like my heart condition prevents me from giving 100% every night I would never say another bad thing about the guy but then again I guess he would be committing financial suicide if that actually was the problem.
it seems some of the players are becoming aware of just how good Rondo can pass the ball but it will take the rest of the season for them all to get on the same page.

Darn right I cried, first time I saw KG that emotional!!! just a shame that with a little bit more effort from Green, we could have put one in the win column.

With some more court awareness from Rondo we could've won, too.
