Game Notes
The Celtics host the Pelicans before heading out for their west coast trip.  The Pelicans (or Hornets) have won the last 3 meetings between these two teams.

The Celtics have lost their last 2 games and 5 of their last 6.  They have fallen to 3.0 games behind the Raptors for the Atlantic Division lead and are now 1/2 game out of the playoffs behind Chicago who leap frogged them into 8th.

The Pelicans lost their last game and are 4-6 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are 3-7 in their last 10.  The Celtics are 8-9 at home while the Pelicans are 5-11 on the road.  The Pelicans are in the 10th spot in the west, 4 games out of the playoffs.

Key Matchups

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4750.jpg) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4469.jpg)
Avery Bradley vs Eric Gordon
Gordon is averaging 15.4 points, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game this season. He can put up points quickly if he gets open.  Even if he is tired, Avery should be able to contain him, however.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/5055.jpg) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/5007.jpg)
Jared Sullinger vs Anthony Davis
Davis is a handful and will definitely be a tough matchup for Sully.  He is averaging 19.2 points, 10.3 rebounds and an impressive 3.2 blocks per game.

Keys to the Game
Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics have got to play all 48 minutes of every game.  They play so well at times and then seem to forget how to play at other times.  They have to figure out how to stop the lapses and play as a team for the whole game.

Move the Ball - The Celtics must do a better job of moving the ball and finding the open man.  They had just 15 assists against the Bulls.  They have to stop over dribbling and get back to passing the ball and getting everyone involved.

Rebound
- The Celtics have to continue to crash the boards as a team.  Rebounding takes effort and the Celtics have to show that effort on the boards.

Defense - The Celtics seem to go through offensive droughts at times during games and it is essential that they continue to play tough defense to keep the Pelicans from scoring at will during those droughts.

Run and Go to the Hoop - The Celtics need to run on every possession.  They also need to get inside and not settle for outside shots.  When the Celtics build leads, they are running and going to the hoop.  When they lose leads they stop running and settle for outside shots.

X-Factors
Fatigue and Home
The Celtics are playing in back to back games and so fatigue may become a factor.  The Celtics are playing at home, however, and they may get a boost from the home crowd.

Bold Predictions: Somebody unfurls a massive WELCOME BACK GREG STIEMSMA! Banner in the crowd. Would probably have been me but I won't be at the game, Sullinger to go to war with Anderson at the 3pt line and Davis in the post.

Pelicans are such a fun team to watch.  Anthony Davis is legitimately the second coming of KG.  Or is it the second coming of Duncan?  Dude is a superstar.  He should eat us alive in this game.

I don't totally understand their team, though.  They gave Tyreke Evans 11 mil a year to back up Eric Gordon... and Evans has been playing fairly well.  That really sounds like a team poised for a trade.  I thought paying Green 9 mil a year to come off our bench was a sure sign of Pierce eventually getting moved.   Paying Evans 11 mil... something has to give.  My guess is that they'd give up Eric Gordon for just about anything.

Eric Gordon seems like the perfect fit for any team wanting to make the next jump. Like if Danny picked up a very solid center [like Monroe], would it make sense to then go get Gordon on the cheap? There are obvious questions with his health, but it is not every day that you have the opportunity to get a scorer like him for basically expirings / picks...maybe Avery, too, but that would be expected.

KO has so much work to do to not be a defensive liability.

He just can't defend NBA bigs right now.

Anderson is going to destroy Wallace this game.  His whole game right now is trying to get Wallace to switch onto him and then he just calls for the ball.

And still, he gives you more than he takes away.

There is a reason the ball moves better with the second unit.  There is a reason Humps gets so many touches when KO is out there.

I'd let KO learn on the job and foul out.

Rather hard to question taking out KO for Bass when Bass accounts for 25% of your points so far and KO's bad defense accounted for 20% of the Pelicans points

Yeah.....it's a learning deal for KO,   And rebuilding for C's .......let him stay in and foul out .......learn on the job training

Stevens wants this one bad ....may be lean times for a while this month

DeMar DeRozan is just awesome.  I really love his game.  I'm so glad they blew up after Rudy Gay left, UM really turned that team around quick.  Hopefully they don't demoralize the Wizards too bad though, we need them to make the playoffs

I am pretty sure that if KO gets as many minutes/touches as Bass does, he would not not only have as many points but more rebounds and 3X as many assists.

And as for his defense, yeah it needs work, but can't blame every game we lose on KOs defense

After next season...yup. I stand by that statement I made that you so proudly display and except for maybe 2 games this year, seems like I was right on. If he can't play defense and can't get his shot off, things I openly worried about, then he will be headed to Europe or China after next year.

Nick's not the only disbeliever in Olynyk.

I really didn't want Danny to draft him and tried to buy into the hype of Summer league but it quickly faded.

I don't think he's a complete scrub but I think his ABSOLUTE ceiling is a poor mans Spencer Hawes.

Hopefully Danny fools some GM into taking Wallace by attaching Olynyk :D

It I funny as some seem to say KO has no defense...then when he is out...we get killed inside...lost rotations...easy layups, many inside points.....how can he be on the bench..and causing defensive problems then..? He showed a better game than most when he was involved as he should be the other night.....that was no accident...shooting, passing, and defense....they don't often look to him as he rolls from his pick.....

This is when you can really tell if you're a pro-tanker or not. One possession game. Entering the 4th quarter.

Are you actively rooting for a win? Or a loss?

Don't think they collided heads.

Andersen probably complained about loss of sensation to his extremities considering the precaution they're taking. This has no looks of a concussion.

Just in time to see the final few plays.

Those were both poorly executed IMO. Sully has the range, but he should not be taking that three.

Jcraw: 2 for 14
Sully: 3 for 17

5 for 31 between them.  Ugh.

Well atleast he had 11 assists and only 2 turnovers. But yep, he sure hit a wall shooting wise.

Get rid of all the brick laying guards ..

That is why CP 3 is great......he can hit the game winner ......we have no shooter on this team

Just brick house builders

that has been the killer in a number of games - poor execution by the celtics. sometimes at the end of games. they are not consistent in execution.

but a good effort tonight by the team. a good game to watch, though a disappointing ending.

Not Stevens fault ...he has no consistent shooter on the team

Maybe we need Wiggins ...for the last minute shots and dels in game.

AB and Crawford just can not be counted on to hi a shot in last five minutes of a game

At what point do we just sit Sully down for a few games so he can get his hand right? His shooting numbers have been horrible lately. 3 for 17? Come on man.

i think they would become more effective if there was a better scorer for the celtics, as pierce used to be for them. the defense would then focus on the scorer and allow more space for bradley and crawford.

but this was known at the start of the season. ainge will get a good scorer sooner or later for the team.

Tough loss, but I really liked the fight that our guys showed tonight.  This is a likable team.  Let's go steal a couple out West.

Seems pretty similar to what was happening to Kevin Love last year (recovering from a broken hand).  Skilled, soft-handed big men like Sullinger and Love with very limited athleticism are especially hindered by hand injuries.  Their superior touch around the basket is a big part of what enables them to produce.

PROBABLY at the point where we do not want to tank?

Regarding Sully's shooting numbers the last two games, at what point do we say the hand isn't the only problem but that the guys guarding him have done a tremendous job.

Sully is a PF playing against centers. The last two games with a hurt hand he play against arguably two of the better defensive centers in the league. They are taller and longer and more athletic than he is and I am sure that affected his shooting as much as a bum hand.

Enough with the let's sit Sully stuff. He is cleared to play. The trainers and medical staff say that if he plays it will not make his hand any worse because if it did that would make him injured, not just hurting.

Did his hand cause him to be off in his shots? Sure. But my guess is playing against Joakim Noah and Anthony Davis, two extremely tall, long and gifted defensive centers played a much larger role in his shooting poorly than did his hand.

Let's give some credit where credit is due. My guess is if he was matched up primarily against Carlos Boozer and Ryan Anderson because we had a real center that needed to be guarded, he would have had much better shooting nights.

Not to hard to figure latest loss to pelicans!!!  34.8% field goal shooting and 24.1% from 3 point land.
it's not too bad rooting for the Green Machine out here in LakerLand considering the Fakers are not doing much better right now.
I have no idea what the state of this team will be after this west coast road trip but considering we are getting beat in games we should be winning, this trip could be UGLYYYYYYY!!!

You know, it occurs to me now that Anthony Davis was pegged as a can't-miss #1 draft pick. Seems like he's been a pretty positive player for the Pelicans.

It's not just the last 2 games though. It's been the last 5. I didn't do the math but he must be shooting close to 30%. I get that he's been medically cleared but just because he's been medically cleared doesn't mean he's gonna be effective.

Agree, he is playing out of position.   He never had length and always has struggled against length.   When playing Center this is even worse as he is even smaller.   Being smart and savvy helps him but it can only go so far against a good defender who stays on his feet.

I actually thought he got a lot of bail out veteran calls last night against Steamer.   Some of those didn't look like fouls to me.  For me we got the calls folks.  It was a good thing because he was shooting horrible last night and was 3-17, probably another reason not to try to be the man and shoot a buzzer beater.  Your not 100% either.

The shot I thought was dumb by Sully was taking the final three.   Your a BAD SHOT anyways JARED!   You had a hurt hand!  Give it to someone who can actually SHOOT A THREE!  It was a selfish bone headed play  shooting that when you average  .27% from 3P line.  Jeff Green, Bradley and Crawford all shoot at least .38%, 41% and 32%.  Bass shots 67% from there.

Humph does not shoot them.  Out of the guys who do only Pressey shoots then worse than Sully.   Why he took this took this shot is beyond me other than he wanted to play with Wiggins.   It was a bonehead move that cost us the game.  Hero ball is zero ball!

Loved his rebounding effort though.
