Game Notes

The Timberwolves make their only visit to TD Garden leading the series 1-0.  They also beat the Celtics in Minnesota 106-88 and they also beat the Celtics in a game in the preseason.

The Wolves played in Memphis on Sunday night, winning 101-93.  They come into this game looking for their second straight win.  The Celtics last played on Friday, beating the Knicks at home, and are also looking for their second straight win.

The Wolves are just 4-8 on the road while the Celtics are 6-6 at home.  The Wolves have dropped their last seven visits to Boston, dating back to a 99-97 victory on Mar. 6, 2005.

Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/brandon_bass.jpg)  vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/kevin_love.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs Kevin Love
Kevin Love is a tough cover for anyone and is a 20-20 threat on any given night.  He scored 30 points and pulled down 9 rebounds in their win over the Grizzlies on Sunday. He scored 23 points in the game in their first regular season meeting.  Brandon Bass has been praised for his defense this season and he will have a challenge in this one trying to slow down Love.

(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/jared_sullinger.jpg) vs (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/nikola_pekovic.jpg)
Jared Sullinger vs Nikola Pekovic
Pekovic is a strong and athletic big man and Jared is going to need to defend as well as to make him work on the defensive end.  Pekovic scored 20 in their first meeting.  We may see Faverani guarding Pekovic if he starts to have a big game.

Honorable Mention

Avery Bradley vs Kevin Martin
Martin is capable of putting up a lot of points in a hurry but Avery will make him work for his points in this game.  He scored 20 points in the first game earlier in the season.  Also,  Martin isn't known for his defense so Avery may have a big game. Bradley scored 27 in their first meeting.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- The Celtics must defend. The offense feeds off of the defense and if the Celtics can't get stops they struggle on the other end as well.  The Wolves have players who can hit the outside shot and so the Celtics have to guard the perimeter but they also have players who can get inside so they also have to protect the paint.

Rebound
- The Celtics must get rebounds to prevent second chance points and fast breaks. Rebounding takes effort and desire and the Celtics have got to show both and crash the boards as a team. Pekovic and Love are very good rebounders and the Celtics must box them out and fight for rebounds.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and rebounds and in taking the ball to the basket. They also have to be aggressive on defense. When they are aggressive in going to the hoop good things happen. The Celtics have to play like they want it more.

Set the Pace- The Celtics must run from the beginning of the game until the final buzzer. Running will allow them to get easy baskets as they get down the court before the defenses set up.

X-Factors
Home and Energy
The Celtics are at home and should get a boost from the home crowd and having had 2 days off prior to this game.  The Wolves are on the road and played on Sunday night in Memphis and had to travel overnight which could mean less energy for them.

Pek will beast our undersized frontcourt again, and Love will provide Sully with a demonstration of the very best that a rebounding, three-point shooting PF with a decent post game can be.

At least 2-3 highlight passes by Rubio around a bewildered Crawford.

Yup ...here we are again without a serious sized center to counter the BiG centers most good teams have.

I hope Hump can play , he doesn't mind banging hard under the rim with these giant centers.

We must learn how to win at home with more consistency and this would be a good game to start a 2-0 run.

When I saw Corey Brewer working out here in September, he showed talent and worked hard.  That said, although it was not a game situation, he reminded me a lot of Jeff Green.  Very talented and athletic, but maybe not quite aggressive enough.  Because it wasn't a game situation, that may not be a fair assessment.

Gonna miss the game.

Bam Margeras band is coming to my town, yes, I don't know what he's thinking with that one. But regardless I'm gonna go see it.

Hope we win. If not I'll try and slap Bam Margera in the face for making me miss a Celtic game.

But my Bold Predictions are

Jeff goes for 36
Sully wont miss from 3 point land.

We win by 7

Yeah this is an awful matchup for us... I expect Love and Pek to go off. Agreed on your points as well, need big games from Green, Sully, and one if not both of Crawford and Bradley. Hopefully some good rebounding by Bass, I'm expecting a lot of offensive boards for the Wolves...

And where was superstar game changing Kevin love going down the stretch? If you are an offensive all star, you have to demand the ball.

I keep hearing how the West has so many strong teams and how the C's would be like 12th out West but looking at the PPG and PP100 possessions of the teams out West and watching them play, I gotta say, not many of them play defense. Certainly not defense like many of the Eastern teams, Boston included.

I wouldn't be so certain that Boston wouldn't be in a playoff hunt out West because they actually do play defense, unlike most of the teams in the West.

I also wonder how many on this site who said we needed more stars to compete feel about how many stars we will need after watching Sullinger develop into a stud.

Could it be that Bradley and Sully are actual stars in the making? Starting to look that way if you ask me.

Agreed, imagine these guys and team play with Rondo back as well. Add it to the fact that I think we have a superstar coach in the making and I think we're a trade away from contention, not a high draft pick... and look at all those future picks to potentially use. Well played Danny.

I truly think we may win this division. Just think we could be the Knicks or Nets with no future. Thankful for our management

I still think in the fullness of time The Nets will catch us up and take the Division title, and at least two of the Hawks, Wizards and the Bulls will shape up well enough to finish with a better record than us. Having said that, this core is doing pretty well. Even if we miss a top pick, we have something to work with.

Nothing, Sullinger does surprises me. IMO, it was obvious after last year Sully was going to be borderline all-star at the very least. On the other hand, Bradley is convincing me that he's a legit starter by proving he can score efficiently without Rondo. I don't think he'll be an all-star, but with how he's playing now Rondo might help take him to that level. I'm starting to buy into the Rondo and Bradley back court.

the celtics have the fourth best record in the conference at 12-14. If the season ended today, they would have home court in the first round and the 19th pick in the draft.

It is amazing just how crappy the eastern conference is right now.

That was always the upside of forming a winning team this year.  You don't get the sexy picks in the draft, but instead the players you already have start amassing value.

At this point everybody in the rotation is playing well relative to realistic expectations.  Gerald Wallace is the lone exception statistically, but even in his case he's doing some good things on the court even when he's not scoring.

In particular, the quartet of Crawford, Bradley, Bass and Sullinger are performing beyond what could have realistically been hoped of them.  Should we choose to move them, they'll have suitors.

Speak for yourself.  I've always considered Bass to legitimately be at least a fringe NBA starting-caliber PF.  Bradley isn't even playing as good as I think he can be.  Crawford is playing a level that I thought he was theoretically capable of, but never had confidence that he could mentally sustain.  I'll admit to Sullinger being better than I expected this season.
