Game Notes
Players on both sides are saying that this is just another game, but it's far from it.  For one thing, it's a division rivalry.  For another, it is the first of 4 meetings between two teams that made a blockbuster trade this summer.  Players on both sides would love to beat the team that traded them this summer to show that their former teams should have kept them.

The starting lineup in the Nets notes has Shaun Livingston starting at the point and Alan Anderson playing at small forward.  However, there have been reports that both Paul Pierce and Deron Williams are expected to return from injury in this game.  Jason Kidd may bring them off the bench or put them right back in the starting lineup.

Paul Pierce broke a bone in his hand just 10 days ago and was expected to miss this game, but he was back at practice on Monday and said he expects to play in this one.  His early return shouldn't come as any surprise to Celtics fans who have seen the former Celtic play through injuries over and over throughout the years.

Deron Williams has missed the whole season so far with an ankle injury.  He has also been practicing and expects to make his return in this game.  On the Celtics side, Kelly Olynyk has been sidelined with a sprained ankle since November 23 and practiced on Monday for the first time since the injury.  He is listed as a game time decision.

The Celtics have won their last 3 games, while the Nets are looking for their second straight victory.  The Celtics are 5-7 on the road and 6-4 in their last 10 games while the Nets are just 2-6 at home and 3-7 in their last 10.

The Nets last played on Saturday when they were able to get past the last place Bucks 90-82.  The Celtics played a matinee game on Sunday, annihilating the Knicks by 41 points.   The Celtics also are playing in the first of back to back games with the Clippers waiting in the wings for a Wednesday game.   Whether they admit it or not, this game is special.

Key Matchups

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/jared_sullinger.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/brook_lopez.png)
Jared Sullinger vs Brook Lopez
Brook Lopez is one of the top centers in the league and is going to be a tough cover for Jared Sullinger.  Lopez is averaging 20.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/brandon_bass.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/kevin_garnett.png)
Brandon Bass vs Kevin Garnett
Brandon Bass learned a lot while playing along side Kevin Garnett and now the student must stop the master.  This should be a good matchup.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Celtics have been winning with defense and they need to continue to play tough team and individual defense in order to win this game.

Run
- The Celtics play best when they set the pace and run on every possession.  They can get easy shots when they beat the defenses down the court.

Rebound
- The Celtics have been doing a good job of crashing the boards as a team and they need to continue to do so.  When they rebound as a team, including the guards, it gives them a much better chance of winning.

Move the Ball - The Celtics play best when they move the ball and find the open man.  When they dribble too much and stall the ball movement, they struggle.

Go to the Hoop - The Celtics have been shooting the ball well, but they shouldn't fall too much in love with the long jumpers.  When they take the ball inside, good things happen.  They either get an easy basket, draw a foul or have an open man to pass out to.

X-Factors
Focus and Emotions
Emotions will be running high on both sides and the team that can keep their focus and control their emotions the best will more than likely get the win.

Very interested to see Bradley on Johnson.

Joe is massive for a SG (6'7 240lbs) and Avery may have problems.

Looking forward to it!

This will be a good game, they're taller than us, more experienced, more expensive and more dysfunctional ;D

Tim Bontemps ✔ @TimBontemps
Williams, of course, is expected to play tomorrow.

Stefan Bondy @NYDNInterNets
Paul Pierce said there's a good chance he plays tomorrow

I'd say Celtics run The Nets out of the Building but that wouldn't be a BOLD PREDICTION.  Anyway, Jeff Green to in for 40 points and 10 rebounds, Jordan Crawford to hit more 3s than the whole Nets team, and Faverani gets away with a moving screen on Kevin Garnett, twice.

Because of his mass, Johnson's weakness on defense is closing out on a spot-up attempt on the perimeter.  Perhaps Bradley can exploit that.

If you don't count Green and Wallace, I don't think any guard on the roster will clearly do a better job defending JJ than Bradley.

In my mind this game defines which team is playoff bound and which one isn't , Rondo withstanding.

the Nets have a lot riding on this game .....not being the laughing stock of the NBA, I look for for them fight tooth and nail for their respect...I think Pierce see,,if Nets lose here ,....the team might just explode .....this is a critical game for,the Nets

A Celtics win over a  underachieving All Star club with their back against the wall. Would be nearly as epic as the win over the Heat....if Nets lose this , I think the coach is in very serious trouble  .......it just flys in the face of the whole Nets organization to lose this game is just not an option.....to,save face.

On the other side......the Celtics may hold  an ace in the hole ......there are a couple guys that would like nothing more than to PAYBACK the Nets organization ...

I think JCraw wants to prove he can compete with the likes of DWill and all his hype that goes with his career .

There maybe a lot of hate ready to fly in the face of the Nets tonight.

I look for several ejections from both sides . Tons of emotion......none of it love

The total, key is to keep Lopez in control and get him in foul trouble early ......make KG play .

Go Celtics !

BOLD PREDICTIONS

MarShon Brookes finishes with 7 points in 7 minutes.

Paul Pierce reveals to the world that he really can't grow facial hair. Or hit a shot, as The Truth goes 0-7 from the field and 3-5 from the line.

Kevin Garnett sneaks onto the Celtics bus and smuggles himself back to the TD Garden

Deron Williams goes ham. Literally. He orders a hoagie from the bench during the game, finishes the whole thing during the first quarter, and doesn't get a single crumb on his suit and/or jersey.

Celtics Win.

By A Lot.

The nets look good when they pound the ball inside. Lopez and KG are so good down there. But instead they just play my turn, my turn basketball, and brick away.

The celtics should loose this game, based on the inside game matchup. We will see....

You guys know how Tommy used to always go crazy over the fact that Joe Johnson would back guys down with his arm out pushing the defender back? Well isn't that exactly what that Brillo pad haired freak has been doing in the paint the whole game? You'd have to pay me to watch Brook Lopez play basketball on a regular basis.

8:59 Brandon Bass misses a 7-foot jumper in the lane
8:23 Brandon Bass misses an 18-foot jumper from the top of the key
7:33 Brandon Bass misses a 20-foot jumper from the left wing

he took and missed 3 shots on their 3 of their 4 possessions in that sequence. I know you love bass and all but you cant honestly ignore this.

We have no answer for a team with a dominant center and if we get pressed on d.  Rondo will address the latter, Danny will need do adress the former.

bass' ballhogging got us out of the game!

he took 2 shots

come on brotha

he took three shots, also had one turnover.

What matters is whether or not those are shots he is supposed to take within the flow of the offense.  Whether or not he makes them is somewhat irrelevant.  The overall process matters, not the immediate results.

That's why we need a huge center to offset the Lopez , Chandler, types other teams have.......Fav looks like miget standing with Lopez.

With Asik to offset  these huge centers other teams put in we would have a fighting chance.

I think the end result is a huge trade or Rondo moved to get a center to play against Lopez types ....

lots of effort by the celtics. typical inconsistencies on defense. crawford jacked up a few too many shots. but over all a watchable game.

I thought that when Crawford was in tonight, the offense didn't flow. It was a lot of one on one ball stopping going on. You could hear CBS telling them to speed it up and move the ball. When AB and Lee were in together the offense seemed to flow better. I'm not talking about any other game I only mean tonight, Lee and AB should have stayed in together. I noticed it every time AB/Lee (Wallace) together made the offense flow better... I don't know why he pulled Lee right as we were coming back, as soon as Lee was pulled for Craw, we went back to stagnant offense. Then Crawford started to attack and we looked better, you could see that that's what was missing all night. Craw didn't penetrate like he had b4 tonight and it hurt. We win this game if Bass or Craw (both) had better games... don't look at the stats b/c you would be fooled.

When we move the ball and share, we win! When we hold the ball (1-2 players touch the ball the entire possession), we lose. It's as simple as that. Lopez killed us for sure, but even with that we could have won if Craw and/or Bass played better.

Sully disappeared in the second half. I didn't know he was out there most of the time. He hit 2 3s early in the 3rd and wasn't heard from again.

I don't know how we managed to pretty much shut Lopez down in the 4th but I do wanna know why it took so long.

Lopez ...simply changes the game , the way our players play.....they  hesitate play out of sorts, do all kinds of bone head plays avoid the paint ......when Lopez is in there

I ll say if  we had Asik or Gasol or Hibbert or Howard .....on the Celtics we win the game

Otherwise ...we can't expect guys like Sully and Bass to have freakish Lebron James type game at will ......every now and then ...Green, Sully and smaller players can take Lopez or Duncan , or Howard ...but not on a consistent basis....not enough to win a title ....aye a few game a year

I knew we'd lose this game.......the panick, desperation ,  PP came back......all the stops taken back to win this game.......but with Lopez they will win best of a series every time .....

We an t winning a series without a serious center ,   No matter who the rest of the team is ....

Without a Duncan , Howard , Gasol , Noah, Chandler type ......we will never bet better than a fourth seed.

Or wait till a center accidentally falls into Boston.....About  2020

We most definitely waited too long to address the Lopez issue. I thought for sure Stevens would take care of it sooner in the second half because he alluded to making changes with regards to Lopez at halftime.  that Lopez is a load!!! well, as long as we learned from it, I can live with it.
Not a bad game though, a couple things go different here and there and it's a win.

Here's what Celticshub thinks of the matter:

Quote
Stevens gets a big bump for essentially taking Lopez out of the game in the fourth quarter with his double-teaming defensive strategy, but why didn’t he go to it before? Sorry Brad, you’ll be back up at A+ soon. Hopefully this doesn’t ruin your 4.0. (http://celticshub.com/2013/12/11/nostalgia-brooklyn-over-boston-104-96-full-recap/)

I can live with it b/c it will help us in the future. I just hate it took so long.

With RR we win this game. We were much better when someone was penetrating. Even with Lopez going off we had our chances, we just couldn't do anything offensively, the ball stuck far too much.

I'm hoping the player of the week didn't get into Craw's head. This is his worst game, he wasn't penetrating, the ball was sticking in his hands and he took some bad shots that he hasn't been taking this season (he usually takes only one a game and we can live with that but tonight it seemed he was doing too much).

Wallace that was uncalled for.

Eh, a bit of feistiness doesn't hurt. I'd like to bottle it and give Jeff a transfusion.

Its not feistiness, its being frustrated and unsportsmanlike. And no thank you, I dont want Jeff Green committing unecessary technical fouls, esp non verbal ones
