Brandon Bass vs Paul Millsap
It will be strange to see the Hawks without Josh Smith but Paul Millsap is playing very well for them, averaging 16.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.  With Kelly Olynyk rolling his ankle and Jared Sullinger under the weather, it's not certain who the Celtics will start in the front court.  Either Brandon Bass or Jared Sullinger will have to contain Millsap and also have to make him work on defense.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/5234.jpg) (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4245.jpg)
Vitor Faverani vs Al Horford
Once again, the Celtics front court may be Sullinger/Olynyk or Bass/Faverani, or maybe even another pairing.  Horford is a force inside and is averaging 17.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game and whoever starts at center will have his hands full.

Game Notes

After just one game at home, the Celtics are back on the road to take on the Hawks in Atlanta.  This is the first of 4 games between these two teams.  The Celtics would love to hand the Hawks a loss for more reasons than one.

First and foremost, the Celtics have lost 6 in a row and they very much need a win.  Second, the Celtics will more than likely get the Hawks pick in the 2014 draft from the Nets trade and handing them another loss may just move them up a spot.

The Celtics are 2-6 on the road, while the Hawks have been playing well at home with a 4-1 record at Philips Arena.  Both teams are playing in the second of back to back games and both teams had to travel to get to this game. The Celtics are in the midst of playing 5 games in 5 cities in 7 nights, which is brutal for a young team just trying to find their way.

The starting front court is up in the air for this one.  Brad Stevens liked the Sullinger/Olynyk combination and went with them two games in a row.  But, Olynyk rolled his ankle in the Pacers game and didn't return for the second half.  Kyle Draper described Sully as "under the weather" and said that he is also questionable for this game.

Keys to the Game
Take Care of the Ball- The Celtics turned the ball over 21 times vs the Pacers and the turnovers was one of the reasons that the Celtics couldn't hold their lead in the second half.  They must focus on their passes and not give extra possessions to their opponents.

Rebound the Ball - The Celtics were out rebounded by 10 vs the Pacers.  They must crash the boards to keep the Hawks from getting second chance points and also fast break points.  Much of rebounding is effort and desire and the Celtics must have more of both against the Hawks if they want to win this.

Move the Ball The Celtics had just 11 assists in the loss to the Pacers.  They did great in the first half moving the ball and they went into half time with a lead.  But in the second half, the ball seemed to stick and they stopped moving the ball, and they lost the lead.  They have to move the ball and find the open man.

Run! - The Celtics have to run on made baskets, on missed baskets, every time up the court.  They are not a very good half court team but when they run, they get easy baskets and are able to get into the paint.  They have to run and move the ball up the court quickly.  Again, they ran in the first half and built a lead.  In the second half, they slowed it down and started to walk the ball up the court and over-dribble.

X-Factors
Fatigue and Focus
Both teams are playing in back to back games, but the Celtics are in the midst of 5 games in 5 different cities in 7 nights, which is a brutal stretch for any team.  Fatigue may be starting to set in. Also, they seem to lose focus as the game goes on.  Can they keep their focus for 48 minutes and get the win?  [/center}

I think this is one of those matchups where Faverani won't play much. Millsap and Horford are quick and too skilledaway from the basket. Brad Stevens has seemed reluctant to play Faverani against those types of threats. So it'll probably be one of the others.

I don't if Olynyk is going to be fit but even if he is, I don't think he'll be the best option against either player (Horford or Millsap). Both guys seem too well-equipped to take advantage of Oly's weak man-to-man defense.

Sullinger appears to be the best option against Horford. The best blend of muscle, quickness and defensive discipline. Bass is probably the best against Millsap. I am thinking Humphries gets some more minutes here too.

It would seem by the amount of interest generated by last night's Pacer game that we have finally gotten rid of the "fair weather" fans that are only around if the C's are guaranteed to make the finals. they don't even seem interested if the team could make the playoffs, that's even below them!!!
Doesn't take much to see what went wrong with last night's game, one just has to look at the third quarter output of 8 points. that's the same period that crawford decided to show us his Bob Cousy skills while everyone else just stood around doing absolutely nothing. all the good ball movement we had in the first half came to an abrupt stand still and this is the one thing the Celtics have not learned...YOU CAN NOT TAKE EVEN ONE QUARTER OFF  especially against a team like the Pacers!!!
Bradley and Crawford...too many turnovers even though Crawford had a great game, it's those little things that kill us.
Faverani has lost some of his aggresiveness and makes too many mistakes under the basket.
Another tough game tonight versus the Hawks especially if Sully and Kelly are out.

Unfortunately, maybe not.  He looks to have been dropped from Atlanta's rotation recently.

But carry on!

I just had a couple exchanges in last night's thread concerning this. Some seem to feel that only the pro-wantustolose people show up in the threads now(which is preposterous) when it is quite the opposite in my opinion as you have stated. Sure there are exceptions but the number of posters in the game threads has gone down considerably and I stated as much last night.

I have only seen one guy openly state he wants us to lose in any game thread here. ONE!

No Olly either! Geez, this game is going to be a tough one to watch. I was hoping to beat Atlanta and help the celtics' draft selection.  ;D

Sure they exist, but I doubt they spend much time posting on a Celtics blog forum.  I take it on good faith that a vast majority of those who post on these boards are committed Celtics fans.  If they weren't, they probably wouldn't be here.

P***ing contests about who is a bigger fan are pointless and annoying.

I'm shorter than six feet tall and well under 200lbs, so I know for sure I'm not the biggest Celtics fan.

BOLD PREDICTIONS

Paul Milsap drops a 20-10.

Avery Bradley comes down to earth with his shooting, going 4-13.

Brad Stevens actually smiles, or frowns, during the game.

There are no fair weather fans who post in the game threads.  Nothing but dedicated, hardcore fans here, regardless if they are pro-tank or not.  I noticed that the game threads are often slower on Fridays and Saturdays.  People are out doing things, or maybe at the game (or at a bar watching the game, etc).

I think this is the first time I've seen 3 defenders converge on a ball-handler, and the ball handler gets called for an offensive foul.

For me, he's one of those guys I didnt want to like. But honestly he can play and gets it done every nite on the court. I have always felt like he was playing out of position and would flourish next to a 'true' center.

Love to have him on our team in a 3 big rotation with Sully and Olynyk.

That guy is worth $12-13 million a year. Don't know why he has gotten so little attention during his two times in free agency. Teams have gotten bargain contracts from him both times.

I predict that Atlanta finally goes on a extensive losing streak after this game.

I agree,  they have only Horford , who really couldn't 't dominate Sully or Vitor. .........so how are they play against teams with a big inside game......two quick guards , Horford  and Milsap ....not enough .....too small.....

Hawks ....are not deep ,  four good players ..........they will drop like a rock

Sullinger was a big reason we won that game. He kept us afloat for the majority of the midsection of the game and played great defense. I've been more impressed by Sully's play than by Jeff Green & Avery Bradley. AB gets a lot of front rimmed shots and failed fast break attempts. I felt like i felt that block coming as soon as the play developed.

Tired of Dave Cowens, though.

"Why do they stop the game for blood on the jersey? they don't do it in hockey..."

Gee, it's not like one of the best point guards in the game became infected with a generation-crippling blood borne disease. ::)

Great player? Definitely.

Great thinker? Uh, hmmm.
Yeah he is not made for TV announcing.  His voice is monotone, he says boring stuff.

I have a pretty low tolerance for a lot of the people that rotate through the Celtics broadcast staff. Scal was great last year, PJ's done well, and I like Cowens, but he just doesn't work with a play by play like Gorman--If he had someone who could direct a conversation while taking up dead air like a Harlan or a Marv Albert I think he'd have a better time.

Homer as it sounds, after watching a smattering of League Pass games this year, I'm pretty sure Gorman's the best local broadcaster; he does a good job covering the game without over-explaining what you can easily see.

Also, the super calm and relaxed sounding guy from Memphis seems to have been replaced, which is a shame.

if brooklyn continues to stink, we'll get stuck with Atlanta's pick this year.  Tonight was kinda a lose-lose situation from a tanking perspective.  We want Boston to lose as many games as possible, but we also want Atlanta to lose as many games as possible.  But I'll take the win... anything to kick-start Atlanta's downfall.

Or a win-win for those glass half full tanking people.

PJ is bad he looks like he's on cocaine and desperately needs a throat lozenge before he says another word lol

Nice "Team" win!!!

The only glaring negative to this game, and it is something that must be cleaned up because it will cost us quite a few games....Atlanta scored 29 points off of 19 Celtic turnovers. these are the kind of mistakes that you don't realize mean anything until the end of a game that seemed pretty even until you look at the stat sheet to see why you lost!!!
Well, let's see if we can make it two in a row with those Bobcats on Monday.

If we cut turnovers in half , we win easy.  ....I was going nuts watching them throw the ball away , sloppy handling.

Think, this was the best outcome .   We are sure to lose our fair share .......HELPING Hawls lose was. The best deal, and we feel good doing it at the same time... ;)

Hawks were over .500 because of the easy schedule they had I think they are 40 win team.

I missed the game last night, and finally just caught the replay on CSNNE.  The most impressive part of that game was the intensity with which our team defended down the stretch.  It wasn't perfect, and the Hawks helped us out by missing some makable shots, but the energy and activity level was definitely there.  One play that stand out to me as emblematic of this was a play where Jeff Green raced about twenty feet across the court to put a really good contest on a three point shooter in the right corner.  I saw Jordan Crawford keep Jeff Teague in front of him on the dribble, Sully was using that big body to box out and clean the defensive glass, and of course Brandon had the two big blocks.

Yes, definitely, an engaged looking team in that fourth quarter.  It was nice to see.

Let's keep it up.

Abby that pretty blue dress looks good on you.

i still miss molly.  :'( :-*
Abby is really pretty but Molly was an absolute babe. I'm ok with the celtics getting new gorgeous women every year to keep it fresh, makes up for the rest of the jabronis on that channel.
