Game Notes
The Celtics begin a tough stretch of games with a stop in Minnesota.  These two teams faced each other in the preseason, ending with a 104-89 loss for the Celtics.

Both teams are playing in the second half of back to back games and both had to travel overnight, so there is no advantage for either team in that sense.  The Wolves lost in Denver while the Celtics lost to the Blazers at home.

The Celtics are 29-17 all time vs the Wolves and are 14-9 in Minnesota.  A victory in April of last year stopped an 11 game Celtics win streak against the Wolves.  The Celtics are 2-3 on the road while the Wolves are 4-1 at home.

Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/brandon_bass.jpg)  vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/kevin_love.jpg)
Kevin Love is a tough cover for anyone and is a 20-20 threat on any given night.  Brandon Bass has been praised for his defense this season and he will have a challenge in this one to defend Love.

(http://a.espncdn.com/i/nba/draft2013/headshots/19918.jpg)  vs (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/nikola_pekovic.jpg)
Pekovic is a strong and athletic big man and Kelly is going to need to defend as well as to make him work on the defensive end.  Faverani might be the better match up here.

Honorable Mention
Jordan Crawford vs Ricky Rubio
Rubio is a very good point guard and Jordan will need to stick with him on defense.  Rubio has also been known to slack off on defense and so Crawford may be able to get his shot a bit easier against him.

Keys to the Game

Defense - The Celtics must defend. The offense feeds off of the defense and if the Celtics can't get stops they struggle on the other end as well.  In their last two losses, they have allowed way too many easy baskets.  They have to make defense their priority.

Rebound - The Celtics must get rebounds to prevent second chance points and fast breaks. Rebounding takes effort and desire and the Celtics have got to show both and crash the boards as a team. Pekovic is a beast around the basket and the Celtics must box him out.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and rebounds and in taking the ball to the basket. They also have to be aggressive on defense. When they are aggressive in going to the hoop good things happen. They must be the more aggressive team and they have to stop depending on jumpers, especially when the jumpers aren't falling.  The Celtics have to play like they want it more.

Set the Pace- The Celtics must run from the beginning of the game until the final buzzer.  Running will allow them to get easy baskets as they get down the court before the defenses set up.

X-Factors
Road Game and Back to Back
Once again the Celtics are on the road and playing back to back games.  Since Minnesota is also playing in back to back games, whichever team is better conditioned and can keep the pressure on till the end will get the win.  Also, the Celtics have to keep their focus playing in front of a hostile crowd.

Thanks TB  I always post that on the Game threads on the front page.  Maybe I should include it in the forum game threads, but the specific info isn't usually up when I do the game threads.  Maybe just a reminder about the show.

What do you think?

I also put it in my game chat reminders.  The game threads have a much larger audience, and a lot of members go directly to forums, not seeing the Home Page.  If you can add the podcast notice, that would be great.  If not, I can add into the thread.  Thanks!

I really want Sully out there against K-Love and Faverani against Pekovic.

Sticking with Bass and Olynyk is going to cause problems.

Agreed.

I think Pek will abuse Olynyk as he just doesn't have the beef yet to defend big physical centers.

Bold Predictions: Sully looks like more Kevin Love than Kevin Love. Cs get more turnovers than they concede offensive rebounds. You know what Kris Humphries get big minutes in the low post.

Bold Predictions

Jeff Green scores 24
Crawfman gets 10 assists
Bass finds his rhythm back, scores 17
Sully and Kelly will both score double digits each.

We win by 10

Bold Predictions:

Ricky Rubio undertakes a one man "hearts and minds" campaign with his passing, and there are 75 posts in this thread about how we need Rondo and his assists back ASAP

Kevin Love finishes with 25-9-4 (two of those being outlet passes), but will continue to make the game of basketball look kind of gross.

Jared Sullinger drops a 15-15 and uses his Moses Malone style rear end to forcefully excommunicate K-Love from the Garden.

Avery Bradley quietly releases a Madlib-inspired hip hop record under the name Bravery Addley.

I am wondering when Faveroni and Sullenger will be our starters over Olynyk and Bass. In reading over the game tapes last night against Portland, our best big man combo was Faveroni and Sullenger where they played Portland even while we lost ground with Olynyk and Bass.

Jeff Green and Avery Bradley need to make a better account of themselves, also. Or else I am gonna call for Gerald Wallace and Courtney Lee to get their minutes.

This team does have more long term capability than last years team but it might not translate to a winning record this year because other teams passed us in talent and have been doing so in the past two years.

Thirded.  Make Love play D.  Get the ball to Sully in the post and have him attack with extreme physicality.

The problem is that you're too short-sighted, and honestly coming here to root for a team to lose, regardless of intentions, is pretty much trolling.

So if you guys want this team to lose, and want to root for the team to lose, you can honestly go do it elsewhere, this isn't the thread for it or the blog for it.

It's not about being sensitive, I'm just saying that coming into a Celtics Forum Game Thread, just to root for a team to lose is most definitely trolling, and it's certainly not welcomed.

If you want to keep at it fine, but don't act all indignant when people call you out.

I don't mind it.  I represent a percentage of this fanbase that is rooting for a tank job.  We see it as the best move for our long-term success.  I think a recent poll showed that 60% of this fanbase would rather we finish with a Top 4 pick than make the playoffs with the 8th seed.  Or maybe that's just what they thought was more likely... I forget.

If Clench123 would rather us lose this game, so be it.  That's what he wants.  I don't honestly care if we win or lose this... i just want to see development of the youngs.

Of course you don't mind it, you're pretty much doing the same thing. Who's ever going to mind a troll for doing the same thing one is doing.

I guess the problem is that you guys don't see it as trolling because you have good intentions, but it is what it is, coming into a team's fanbase game thread to make comments that you and all the ones that want to root for this team to lose are aware that it goes against the CelticsBlogs trolling rules:

"Commenting in a thread or elsewhere on the site in a manner that is likely to provoke an angry response from others is not permitted."

I mean, what do you guys expect on this regard? And then act all indignant when people call you out, please.

The one place that should be off-limits for this sort of discussion is the game thread, at the very least I say.

I don't see any conceivable way in which a person can't fathom that coming here to root for the Celtics to lose, just because one considers himself a Celtic fan, is not trolling.

I NEVER EVER pull for any of my teams to lose. However if we lose and get a great pick i am fine with that. win-win scenario in my book.

However, I hope you have the best intentions for the franchise when you make that statement, so I will not hold that against you.  :)

Time to lose again, please.  Lose.  Like Fantasia said, sometimes you have to lose to win again.  Classic case of the current Celtics.  Let's lose big.

You're disgusting.

I'm tired of defending this so I'll just keep it moving and I'll keep rooting for them to lose because I love this team and don't want another 20 something years drought of gold.  Yea, I'm disgusting.  Guilty as charged.  Happy?

The problem is that you're too short-sighted, and honestly coming here to root for a team to lose, regardless of intentions, is pretty much trolling.

So if you guys want this team to lose, and want to root for the team to lose, you can honestly go do it elsewhere, this isn't the thread for it or the blog for it.

lol Relax, man.  Stop being so sensitive.  If you see it as trolling, so be it.  I know I'm not, but whatever.  Fair enough.  Carry on

It's not about being sensitive, I'm just saying that coming into a Celtics Forum Game Thread, just to root for a team to lose is most definitely trolling, and it's certainly not welcomed.

If you want to keep at it fine, but don't act all indignant when people call you out.

you make some good counter points budman. maybe he should not be here if he wants us to lose. But again, i hope he has our best intentions in mind when he says those things. I will give him benefit of the doubt.

Best intentions in heart?  I'm a Celtics fan through and through.  Check all my post.  I have better things to do than to go on a forum of a team I don't care about and "troll."  But if this guy chose to call it that, then whatever.

I want this team to fight and win, if we lose, so be it, we're not gonna win many games with this current roster anyways.

But I'd never root this team to lose, or try and lose purposely. That's just idiotic.

Go C's

Look at a fry pan calling pot black.  You're basically doing thesame thing only framing it differently but yea, I'm the bad guy

Not sure about posting up Bass against K-Love. I would think Bass would be better off trying to go around K-Love rather than trying out-muscle him.

Nice post up bucket by K-Mart over Bradley.

I was just looking that up. Thanks!

Five year college career because of that injury. 16ppg and 7rpg in final two years. Fairly pedestrian shooting numbers. Looks like they were better before the injury. 2 point shooting fell off. Wonder if that was his ability to finish close to the basket. Three point percentages stayed steady so it looks like his jumper was in tact. 2apg, 1bpg. Low turnover numbers.

Yeah, I think you want Pressey or J.Crawford out there alongside Brooks instead of Bradley. A non-passer in the backcourt with Bradley makes that backcourt too limited facilitating-wise.

He was quite good in the ACB Spanish League with Obradoiro. Right now Mike Muscala is there and he's doing pretty good, too. The ACB is a good place to learn to be a pro, and a lot of young prospects should avoid going too soon to the NBA, because the NCAA is really bad at developing the huge talent it has.

The Wolves are two or three steps ahead of us right now. Not mad, but I want the kids to play some D.

Go Celtics!

This has been a good few minutes. Jeff Green getting to the FT line, Faverani hitting two triples and Crawford getting to the rim and scoring on consecutive possessions. Pity Jeff Green turned that one over on the break. Could have cut it back down to single digits.

Good response by the C's. They have weathered bad patches impressively of late. Gotta believe the coaching staff has had a part to play in that. Keeping them even-keeled and continuing to work hard.

OT, the Wolves broadcasters are quite good. And they just praised Mike Gorman, so they know their trade.

This Celtics team is a good draft pick and a season away from being a legitimate ECF contender. They're progressing and they are more talented than what they are showing. Fav, KO, Sully, Bradley, Pressey are very good prospects.

Amen.  I think Bradley thinks he is Kobe and Crawford thinks he is the other Jordan.  Let the bigs get some touches on the post.  Our guards are terrible at running the offense.

green is invisible.
no good switches on defense.
too many jump shots.
poor team defense.

this is what makes the celtics a bad team over the course of a season.

tonight, i dont mind the loss, but the execution was poor. and that is disappointing.

Really poor performance when you are not contributing much. 7 rebounds and 2 blocks isn't anything to call home about.

That said,I hate the whole "go to guy" concept. Basketball is a team game, and you should have 5 guys out there who can make baskets and share the ball. Setting your teammates to score is more important than scoring itself. But tonight the Cs have completely forgot to play Celtic Ball.

That's not unexpected, though. We knew this is a learning process and it will hurt.

I think Green's scoring is going to significantly improve once Rondo is back and we have a PG that actually looks to pass the ball and can get it to people in the right places

that is what happens too often with a bad team. i dont care about the final score, but i do care about effort and execution. i was not happy with either.

kevin ve is no flash in the pan..he burns EVERY team both inside and outside.....

He might want to learn how to play defense in the next seven or eight years, though.

And this crap with all the big guys shooting threes is just that, crap.

You realize the guy that torched us tonight, Kevin Love, made his name doing that right?

And how deep into the playoffs has that gotten him so far? He was better off when he first made his name by rebounding.

Ah, yes, the classic let's evaluate a single player by how his team does in the playoffs.

It's not the player I'm evaluating, it's the strategy. It doesn't win you championships to have your best post player and best offensive rebounder out on the perimeter shooting threes.

better D would help.....for sure...but it must wear out the guy covering him to make them not so much an offensive weapon..and who else in the league at that spot is both good on D and O....they are usually defenders...or KG when he was young....

I like the versatility of the bigs because they can shoot and work in the post but they need better passes to post up and our pick and roll sucks.

Just got back from the game. Biggest takeaway for me was how bad our guys' body language looks. Not a hint of camaraderie, and lots of frustrated gesturing and eye-rolling. Tough game to watch. At least AB's jumper was falling.

Great game from AB unfortunately only Vitor came to play besides him and he got ate alive on D with dump off passes.

I can't believe how Mike Gorman went on and on about the simple inside out dribble Rubio did like it was out of this world.

The best of part of the game was when Max said that Pekovic looked like the mute kryptonian from the superman movies.

Because I was "off"  ;) last night, I didn't feel like proving that Bass had a bad game. I don't even remember who I was arguing with about it.  :o Now that I'm not in a haze ;D...

Bass had an excellent 1st Q, I won't deny that, the eye test and his stats say that.

1st Q
Bass had 8pts/1rb/1ast/1blk in less than 8mins (his only assist and was 3-3FG and 2-2FT) and held Love to 0-5 shooting (he was 1-6FG 2-2FT in the first Q and 5pts)

Now let's look at what went down AFTER that good first Q

Bass went 3-7FG 1-2FT for 7pts (2pts each 2nd and 3rd and 3 in the 4th)

He had 1rb in the 2nd Q and 3 in the 4th

All of his PF(3) came in the 3rd Q

He had 4 turnovers, 1 3rd Q and 3 4th Q

He was mostly on Love but Pek had his way with him too, Love was 5-11 (1-3 from 3) after Q1 (1-6), to end the night he was 6-17 with 23pts (18pts after Q1 5-5FT).

It was also brought up that Bass had a +/- of +5 (Fav was a +4, only 2 in plus side).

Well let's look at the +/- of two of the T-Wolves to show you why you have to take it with a HUGE grain of salt b/c they don't tell the whole story.

32mins: 7/16FG (2/4 3s 7-7) 23pts, 12rbs (2OR), 2ast, 1stl and 7 turnovers/3PF

30mins: 8/9FG (4-5FT) 20pts, 12rbs (8OR), 1stl and NO TURNOVERS/0PF

The first set of stats were Love's, he was +20
The 2nd were Pekovics', he was +5

So, Bass had 1 great Q and 3 terrible ones... like I said last night, he wasn't terrible like Sully was (14m 1/6FG 1/2FT for 3pts, 4rbs (3OR), 1ast, 3PF, 1 turnover), but he was pretty bad for the majority of the night. Bass played 30mins and managed 3 more rbs than Sully, 12 more pts (8 to Sully's only 3 in Q1), 1blk, and 3 more turnovers. While Bass had far more pts than Sully that's the only place he out performed him in 16 more minutes. They both didn't defend well (Bass was good first Q but you see what happened after that).

Bass, for the last time, wasn't terrible (Sully, yikes) but he didn't play much better than Sully after the first Q. Sully coming off the game the day b4 where he went HAM on the Blazers, a bone bruise, and he isn't in great shape, unlike Bass who is always in top shape and rarely an injury to talk about, the guy is a specimen and a picture of health (a great thing BTW)! Bass had all the reason in the world to play better and he came out HOT in the first quarter after having a few terrible games in a row (he was ABUSED by LMA and gave NOTHING to offset it)!

I'm telling it like I saw it, just b/c you don't agree with me or don't like it, doesn't mean I'm hating on Bass. It also doesn't mean I secretly don't like him either, you can believe that but all I can do is tell you how I feel about him, it's not like I can prove that I do b/c lying about what I see from him is not something I'm going to do. When he plays well, I'm always cheering him on and talking it up. When he plays bad, most of it I let pass b/c everyone has off games but he hasn't played a good game in a while, there's only so much I can take.

AB is my favorite player on the team (2nd fav w/ KG), I almost hated Doc last season for letting him play so much when he was TERRIBLE. I wanted AB sat so many times during the playoffs it would have been funny if it wasn't making me lose my mind, I was ticked. He was garbage out there and I said it many times. It's one of the reasons I didn't care that Doc left (I thought CBS was the same the first 4 games but saved himself after, THANK GOD). AB should NEVER EVER play PG, he is so bad it makes my blood boil... how can someone be that bad of a ball handler I don't know. I love the kid as a SG but if he ever has to man the pt again for a good stretch, I may change my mind and beg for him to pack it up (yep, he's that bad)! I can keep going on the things I have said about AB but it's not about him.

Bass will turn it around on offense (he did last game overall 6-10) but his defense (HELP DEFENSE especially) is something that won't be changing. He's great on a contender where he doesn't have to try to be the man or one of the big dogs. I loved Bass' play even more when he had KG to take care of his defensive liabilities. BASS IS A 3 ON D!

Okay, I'm done!

Not much to say on this game, it just seemed that nobody was on the same page.
But here's a thought....do you think these games might be just a little bit closer if our guys could make some layups???
I have never seen that many missed chippies since.....the last Celtic's game!!!!!
