Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/gerald_wallace.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/gordon_hayward.png)
Gerald Wallace's status is uncertain for this game,  but this is a game where the Celtics would need his size at the shooting guard spot to match up with Hayward.  His defense is also needed on Hayward, who is averaging 15 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/vitor_faverani.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/enes_kanter.png)
Vitor Faverani vs Enes Kanter
Kanter has been playing very well for the Jazz, averaging 16.7 points and 10 rebounds.  Vitor, who is averaging 9.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, will need to play tough defense to keep Kanter from going off.

Honorable Mention
Jeff Green vs Richard Jefferson

The big question in this matchup is whether Jeff Green will have two good games in a row or fall back into the pattern of one aggressive game, two invisible games.  Richard Jefferson has lost a step over the years but he is still averaging 11.7 points and the Celtics will need to pay attention to him.

Game Notes
The Celtics and Jazz clash in a battle of two 0-4 teams. The Jazz come into this game after being blown out the night before by the Nets in the first of a 4 game road trip. They will continue their trip through Chicago and Toronto after this game. The Jazz are also short handed with 5 players on the injured list.   If ever there was a game that the Celtics should win, it is this one.

The Jazz are 36-50 all time vs the Celtics and 11-32 all time on the road.  They have lost 5 straight games to the Celtics.  No current players on the Jazz were on the last team that beat the Celtics on March 22, 2010.

The Celtics are still looking for their first win and hoping to avoid becoming the first Celtics team since  their first season in 1946 to open the season 0-5.  To do that, they are going to have to find a way to close out games.

Gerald Wallace left Monday's game with a bruised knee.  He is listed as day to day and should he not be able to play, I'm not sure who Stevens will start in his place.  Possibly start Jordan Crawford at the point and move Bradley to the 2 as that seemed to work in the preseason.

Keys to the Game

Run, Run, Run - The Celtics have to run.  They have the youth and the depth to run every time down the floor but for some reason they walk the ball up part of the time.  They need to get the ball up the court before the defenses can get set.

Rebound
- The Celtics have been doing better on the boards since that first game,  but they need to put out the effort every game to grab rebounds, especially on the offensive end.

Take Care of the Ball
- The Celtics are still turning the ball over too much.  They have to take better care of the ball, make smart passes, and limit their turnovers.

Play 48 Minutes
- The Celtics have been playing very well for 46 minutes and then in the last two minutes they seem to fall apart.  They must find a way to close out the game and execute in the final couple minutes of the game.

X-Factors
Home and Jazz Fatigue
The Celtics are playing at home and hopefully the home crowd will give them a boost in this game. Also, the Jazz are on a road trip and playing in the second of back to back games so fatigue may set in to give the Celtics an edge.

For all Celtics games this season, I am looking forward to the first half only  :-\

In the Detroit game, I went turned it off at halftime.

Wife: "How did they do?"
Me: "They are up at halftime."
Wife: "Well at least you can go to bed happy."

I have to thank her for that perspective and for the strategy.

I think Utah has the edge in this one.  They've faced a much tougher schedule than the Celtics have in Brooklyn, OKC (even without Westbrook, Durant can win a game by himself, which is about what he did in the season opener against them), Houston and a much better than expected Phoenix team which is 3-1.  If Utah was in the Eastern Conference, they'd be right there with the teams battling it out for the 7th/8th seeds.

I think Utah is ripe for the picking.

Their PG rotation is John Lucas III and Jamaal Tinsley. Neither one of which should be playing regular minutes in the NBA. Their big man duo of Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter is pretty solid but they have no depth behind them. I mean Rudy Gobert is their main backup big. Gordon Hayward is a strong player on the wing but after Hayward they are relying on Richard Jefferson and Alec Burks. Both are good backup quality wings and question marks as starters.

There is some young talent there to be developed for the future but in the here and now there isn't a whole lot of talent on that Utah Jazz squad. I think they are going to be something like a 25 win team this year.

Maybe, but you can make a similar argument about the C's.  Our starters are all bench players except perhaps Green.

Favors / Kanter / Hayward are three legit NBA starters.  They are all second banana types, but if/when they hit in the lottery this year they should get good pretty quick.

We on the other hand just have Rondo and Green, plus maybe Vitor, and guess what?  Rondo ain't playing.  Our team is garbage until he gets back and we add a top 5 lottery pick to the line up, plus a good FA

In a different way ...

Celtics have a lot of quality rotation players but lack high end talent.

Whereas Utah have some talent but a serious lack of depth.

I say we will start to see a better set rotation after 10 games. It's starting to take shape. Though I rather see Sully in the starting lineup over Bass

PG (I hope pressey), Bradley, Green, Sully, Vitor

Of course when rondo comes back, I hope

Rondo/Pressey (from Brad Stevens, doesn't seem like he'll play Pressey anytime soon)
Bradley/Crawford
Green/Wallace
Sully/Bass
Vitor/Humphries

Another bad team on the docket tonight?

The C's may have had the softest 5 game start of the season of any team and yet might start the season 0-5.

I think that says a lot about just how poorly constructed this team is(purposely, of course).

I think Kanter is a top 20 center in the league (or thereabouts). So middle of the pack starter or slightly below. A below par defender + defensive rebounder. A good but unexceptional offensive player and strong offensive rebounder.

Still very turnover prone offensively. So that 17.8ppg comes on 14 FGAs with only a small number of FTAs (3) and a large number of turnovers (3.5) which scores him about 0.922 points per possession. Not much of a passer yet either. His lack of explosive athleticism limiting him in one-on-one situations (turnovers, lack of FTAs).

Derrick Favors is a solid starting PF. A below average but solid starter. A very strong defender + rebounder but one of the more limited offensive threats in the league at the starting PF role.  A weak passer, a limited jump-shooter and not much of a post game. Value wise, Favors is pretty close to someone like Taj Gibson.

I think there is a lot of potential there but let's not confuse that with their current value (on the court). They are good players but not high end ones. Not dominant players. Not players who can lead a team. Good players who would be well suited to being the 4th-6th best player on title contender.

Aside from the Grizzlies?

Who, I guess, don't win games with high volume scoring, so that's fair.

I'm proud that we hung in there.  I hope all of them are hard-fought losses.  The grizzlies should be a playoff team this year... I figured that would have been our first blowout.

Need to bust out my lucky charms for this one and get that 1st victory. The over under of 27.5 is going to be way under if Rondo misses most of the season and a trade is not made. If there is a tank quality to this season it is that Rondo is taking the Derek Rose approach to getting back on the court.

Me too, actually. Was surprised to tune in and see us keeping up.

Anyway, we can beat the Jazz. We should beat the Jazz. If we keep winning 20% of our games we'll be right around the 16 wins you need for a top 4 pick.

Give a player enough playing time and looks and he will get 10 and 10. I actually think Faverani and Sullinger are an even matchup for Kanter and Favors, maybe even have an advantage over the Jazz duo.

I like the Sully vs Favors matchup. I think Sully is the more skilled player and maybe has the advantage there. At worst, it's neutral.

I don't have a good read yet on Faverani. He has shown some positive things and some negative things. His performance has varied widely at times and I am not sure how he'll fare against a guy like Kanter (since he hasn't faced anyone like that yet) so I'll give Kanter the nod here.

Where I really like it for Boston is whenever one of Kanter/Favors goes to the bench because Boston's other big men are much much better than Utah's backup bigs. Utah have no depth up front.

It's not just the downgrade of Big Al and Millsap to Kanter and Favors but it's also the downgrade of having Kanter and Favors as backup bigs (arguably the best big combination in the league last year) to the guys they got off the bench this year.

I also agree I like Fav-Sully over Favors-Kanter. Celtics front court is really not in bad shape. They can bang with anybody (add in Hump too) and there some good offensive skills in both Sully and Olynyk. Even Fav's offensive game is decent at times, just needs to be be more consistent.

Glad that Crawford is finally starting at point.

[reads comment, jumps in front of fast-moving vehicle]

I'm glad Bradley is starting at the two, where he belongs.

Crawford to start at the point with Bradley at the two.  Wallace off the bench.  Hopefully with Ab and Craw both staring Pressey will get some time.  But then I keep saying this and it never happens.

A. Sherrod Blakely ‏@SherrodbCSN 56m

Crawford at the point tonight. Bradley, green, bass and Faverani in the starting lineup for #celtics

I wish Sully was starting instead of Bass. I think they need more rebounding in that lineup. That perimeter group doesn't contribute enough on the boards. Puts too much pressure on the bigs (to rebound) especially when one of those guys is Bass.

Yes, you did, Gerald.  And then you got old and ineffective.  Sunrise, sunset.

Wallace is creeping ever closer to Eddy Curry "stay the hell away and we'll mail you the checks" territory.

My thing is, when I’m on the court, I compete to win. And when I’m not, it’s just cheer my guys on and hopefully we’ll get a win tonight."

Wallace said he won't approach Stevens about the change.

"I’m done talking. Whatever they say, it’s their team," he said. "They can do whatever they want to do. (I’m just) going to come out and compete hard and try to win."

I think Utah is ripe for the picking.  Their PG rotation is John Lucas III and Jamaal Tinsley. Neither one of which should be playing regular minutes in the NBA

FYI listening to Utah's announcing team.  They watched Rondo at half court warming up and one calf muscle is dramatically bigger than the other.  They said it will take a lot of time to build that up... suggested he's at least a couple months away.  I doubt we'll see him until after the all-star break.

I kind of don't want to say Bradley has a Low Bball IQ, but it seems like it, He's always half a second to 2 seconds late when trying to make a pass. I don't get it. Faverani was 5 feet away from him, then he passes it to whoever was crossing the back court. UGHHHH

Please Brad keep PP in the game! Let the kid ball. You can see the difference offensively with him in there.  It's such a difference having a true 1 than making a 2 into something he's not. For a few mins in relief is fine, but not starting and playing a majority of the game! I would start PP at the point and bring JC in to give him a breather every now and then. I would also play Brooks behind Bradley.

Interested to see how much Burks has improved and how he'll fare against an undersized SG like Bradley.

Olynyk making some good defensive rotations.

This is one part of his development I'm really getting excited about.

Coming out of college this was his biggest sort of weakness. I'm very happy he's doing good and holding his own. The offense will come around, but I'm glad he can pick up the rotations well.

He still has no offensive game. Lack of development.

He's a guy where I wonder if he'd be better off as an undersized but quick center rather than a burly power forward. Try to use his quickness to face up and go around opposing centers. Needs to upgrade his skill-level to survive at PF.

Oh the Jazz are headed to the lottery, no doubt. They're young and have no depth.

that's what I can't get over with this game.  no depth for Utah.  everyone but the starters should be collecting paychecks from a different league.

C's should win this simply because they have more mediocre players they can bring in off the bench than Utah.

Yeah, Utah didn't stand much of a chance tonight. Road trips are extra tough on young teams with no depth, and on the back end of a back to back.

Meanwhile, the Celtics are deep with an army of 8th men, plus Jeff Green.

This is interesting I wonder if this is how teams like the Bobcats talk every year. Huge tanks. I forgot what it's like to be the fan of a bottom feeder but ill take it, I want a top 3 pick in this draft. Give me Wiggins, Parker, or Randle please

Great read on that very subject from the guy behind Rufus on Fire:

Even when tanking you need SOME wins. I hope they string at least a few together, good for general morale.

Happy to finally see one especially at home, good job guys!

Yeah, I've resigned myself to a year or two of this brutality, but it's only because I have faith  that Danny will have us back in contention in short order. And we have the Sox, the Pats and the B's all in contention.

We're pretty spoiled here in title town.

And when I am wrong I say I am wrong. I thought Olynyk was going to be a bust but finally saw tonight what everyone else was getting so excited about. I am going to temper my expectations because I think he needs to add about 10-15 pounds of muscle to be most effective but, his chemistry and fit with Sully tonight was extremely encouraging.

So I was wrong. He won't be a bust, or at least lets hope not. But he will need to get a lot of work in to get some of those moves in versus the better defensive teams in the league.

Pretty bad performance here, 22 point lead entering the 4th, couldn't even maintain it to start padding stats :p I would like to see Green for 25 and Olynyk for 20, but the situation got so bad that couldn't be done... at least Bass got some stats :p

Good call nick. The guy is going to be a good player for a long time in this league. IQ, Motor and height alone is a dangerous combination

I thought he would shoot alot better than he has shown, but i'm sure he will get better. He is still a fantastic FT shooter and i'm sure his mid range will come around. He should avoid taking three point shots though imo

Olynyk has been huge in setting multiple picks so guys get open and on the defensive end causing havoc by running around like a headless chicken. He gets burnt once or twice but overall its causing opponents headaches.

I don't think you can really evaluate a big in terms of their bodies until their second year, that first summer when they're following a regimen the training staff gives them can make a big difference.

Very true, thought there are some body types you know the pro trainers and dieticians just can not do anything with, like JaJuan Johnson. He was strong but his frame was never going to let him get to be strong enough to make it in this league.

Olynyk's frame is good and he can add some muscle and be okay. Where I would like to see him put on some muscle is in his legs so he will be able to hold his position better down low. He gets moved around rather easily at times.

He has stated when he took a year off , strength trainning workouts were exclusively done standing up vs squatting and bench press heavy

He is a pretty strong kid naturally and scouting report do mention he has a thick lower body.

He just needs to refine imo. He won't be better at 260 bc then he will lose his agility. He is 240 now and 245-250 is prob an optimal weight range for him.

It will only prompt them to play as hard and it will help with player development, coaching development and that thing you call "raising trade value".

Wiggins can roll on his grave all he wants, we'll take the win and get more.

My grade for this game.  As always, our three objectives are #1 - hard-fought losses.  #2 - Develop the youngs.  #3 - Showcase the overpaid vets.

#1 - We almost pulled off the tank late, but ultimately let this one get away from us.   Our first win of the season.  Fail.

#2 - Great games out of Sully and Oly.  Bradley was his typical "meh" self.  Vitor's worse game.   Overall this was a good one.  CHECK.

#3 - Bass 20 points.  Wallace 9 and 9.  Lee had an effective 5 minutes.  I'll give this a CHECK.

Overall score:  C-    Our worst outing this year.  I understand it was vs the worst team in the league, but we can't make a habit out of winning.  Hopefully the Celtics right the ship next outing vs Orlando.  We just need to get through this stretch... softest opening schedule in the league.  It's been difficult to tank under these optimal conditions.   Luckily we have some quality teams on the horizon.

Wow. And here I thought pessimistic pro-tankers was a pleonasm. :]

Not meant in a bad way btw. I just don't agree with the C-. I'd say a B+. Showing that these guys can win you a game even when you're trying to lose makes them more valuable!

Yes, i'm jazzed at winning our first game (No pun intended)but not amused at all about that 4th quarter. luckily we were playing the Utah Jazz because just about any other team and we could very likely be sitting at 0-5.

Tommy Heinsohn hit the nail right on the head.....YOU CANNOT WALK THE BALL UP THE COURT THE ENTIRE 4TH QUARTER!!! as soon as the Celtics took thier foot off the pedal we went from a 25 point lead to only an 8 point lead and there were still four minutes left in the game which is plenty of time to turn a good game into a horrendous loss.
on another note, and I am not trying to start a conspiracy theory here, but isn't it customery for players to congratulate thier coach for his initial win in the NBA??? the only player that acknowledged Stevens after the game was Jeff Green. that seemed a little weird to me!!!

your constant bashing of the C's is just getting nauseating.  everyone's entitle to their opinion but you just post bash after bash.

An occasional win is all we'll see this year.  I intend to enjoy it. Also, the worst record has only won the draft 3 times in all these years so having the absolute worst record is no guarantee of winning the lottery.  With so much prime talent in the upcoming draft, not having the top pick is not a disaster.  No reason for the non-stop misery.

Seemed like Stevens wanted more quickness on the floor. Quicker big men. To compete with Utah's young frontline (Favors, Kanter) who were beating Boston's bigs up and down the court far too easily. And it worked, it worked well so he stuck with it.

So I think it was matchup related more than anything.

He seems to be really willing to sit people or switch things up.  Which is good to me, might as well with how weird our roster is.

But I think he wasn't playing well.  Stevens is willing to just play other people right now.  Olynyk has been really coming along I think.  Even against Memphis when he couldn't score I thought he was otherwise playing smart basketball.  Olynyk's jumper hasn't been falling but when it starts to he is going to be earning more minutes for sure.

This is what is striking me...

So we're supposed to not have a winning habit. Okay, so if this "we should go for losses" plan works and we get the number 1 pick, guess what, that supposed superstar comes to a team who doesn't know how to win, if he even turns into a superstar. And that's another thing.

And then we are just going to waste his talents and will rebuild again in the next 8 years because his supporting cast are perennial losers who never learned how win, because this crazy tank job prevented them to.

Sorry, I'd rather have a team who's hungry for wins. I'd rather have a team that will not accept losing and will battle it out every night for the W, in turn giving them valuable experience and development and also builds character. Give me that and the mid round pick that comes with it instead of that precious #1 overall pick and the repercussion of not having a habit of winning.

Stevens and team aren't trying to lose.

They are allowed to win ,  if they can,  DA has left the situation such that winning many games is highly unlikely .

DA also has imput to pull the trigger on the Celtics success via return of Rondo.

I look. To see what attitude / inspirational impact this win has on the team.

It is very possible they get their first road win tommorrow .Over a Magic team overlooking the Celtics as a push over.

Got to watch this one in person from the nosebleed seats of 330 row 15.  That's the top.

Jeff Green spent a lot of time on the weak side standing around.  Not sure what play that is, but HELLO, isn't he supposed to be the guy that can score?  He looked bored over there, too.  Can't blame him.

The starters simply sucked.  Turned around when Wallace came in.  He and Green seem to be developing some chemistry, I think, or at least something resembling a "together" thing.

Game was mostly individual scoring efforts/moves.  HAHA and Bass was top scorer.  Dude can't pass.

That Wallace/Green/Bradley/Sully/Olynyk group could cover the floor pretty quickly, and almost everyone looked to pass.  Best ball movement of the night, and ran up the score after the early hole.

And I pretty much think that should be the starting lineup until Rondo gets back, and just go with it.  Sub Bradley in early to keep either Green or Wallace on the floor.

Bass looks aggressive, along with Bradley, Wallace, Sully, and KO.  So he looked good in that sense.

Crawford can't see past his own defender, and consequently is of no help at all at PG.

Since we didn't play the most effective lineup (per the eye test) very much, I'd say we're not trying to win very much.

I am getting tired real quick at the "TANKERS" mentality on this board. they want you to believe that Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens are in league together in some kind of conspiracy to intentionally lose games. If you believe in fairy tales then just keep sipping that kool aid!!!
When this coach figures out who plays best with who, this team will win some games.  do you realize how many new people this guy has got to look at let alone thinking of who will fit the best with Rondo when he returns???
Relax, it will all come together sooner than you think.

Complete nonsense.  Cavs had a horrible losing culture when LeBron arrived and he eventually took them to the Finals.  Sonics were activately trying to lose games during Durant's rookie year and they eventually made the Finals.  Celtics tanked it up Rondo's rookie season and yet Rondo/Perk had no issue contributing to a champion the following year.

Losing this year is A-Ok and I'm actively in support of tanking.  Additionally... Maybe 2 or 3 players on this squad will still be Celtics the next time they make the playoffs.  It literally doesn't matter.  We don't have much to gain from winning right now.  The moderately talented youngs will get their reps in regardless.  Our foundation will be built on guys who haven't been drafted yet.

This is a one year thing.  I have no doubt Ainge will start to make moves to make us competitive next year.  In the short term, our only goals are to #1 - Lose Close Games.  #2 - Develop the youngs.  #3 - Showcase the overpaid vets

We'll take a couple wins every once in a while, but we're best off losing as much as possible this season.

You want more?  Boston finished with the 4th worst record in 1969-70... landed Dave Cowens for their trouble.  Eastern Conference Finals during Cowens' second year... eventually two championships.

Celtics win 28 games in 1978-79.  Larry BIrd joins the team the next season and they win 61 games.

Spurs win 20 games in 1996-97.  Champions within two years.

Winning games this season will have little impact on the future of our Celtic players.  If you add a Superstar through the draft, make some trades and Rondo comes back next season, there will be no hold-over from our "losing culture".

Relax, it will all come together sooner than you think.

The thing is, Jordan Crawford is starting, and Gerald Wallace, who had arguable the strongest preseason of any player and also is arguably one of the best players all-around on the team right now, and surely one of its best defenders by far, is coming off the bench.

None of the players that started could pass except for KO with the starting lineup against Utah.  Jeff Green was set up on the weak side 3pt line (not in the corner where he's good, BTW) for more than half of the possessions.

I don't think they're really trying to lose on purpose, but they sure as heck aren't trying to win.

Sully and KO are looking good together, and I think Green and Wallace are, too.  Start them all, and hope their mutual willingness to make the extra pass (as opposed to Bass or Crawford) make up for Bradley's lack of playmaking.  The defense will be as good as we can come up with, most likely.

Let Lee, Bass, and VITOR! come off the bench until Bradley takes Lee's spot when Rondo comes back.

Hump has no real use on this squad, and he hasn't earned minutes ahead of the other guys. Sucks for him. Not sure why he gets minutes.  Sit, please.

I do think we have some nice complimentary players.  Green and Wallace are solid.   KO and Sully are solid big men and Bradley is decent guard.   Rondo is a force multiplier who can change games.   But none of these guys are true superstars,  RR comes closest, but he is no superstar.   Add one good star and I like our chances.  If we get lucky in the draft( and I am not talking a LeBron but a good solid star not superstar, I wouldn't mind the superstar though) and one solid free agent and all the sudden we are not that bad anymore.   The complimentary players are here folks we just need an alpha dog.

We'll take a couple wins every once in a while, but we're best off losing as much as possible this season.

LeBron wasted 3 or 4 years IIRC of his career by being surrounded by talented players who has no winning mentality to the point that his Cleveland team had to overpay for just solid and washed up players just to contend. And he eventually left. Dwight did the same, technically. Youre probably going to see the same with John Wall. Cane in with immense talent but in a losing culture and look.

You underestimate the value of winning culture. Even if its just one season of losing, it still losing. Its not being competitive enough and accepting mediocity instead of beings p---ed and working hard the next game to get a win. That sets a bad example for this superstat you want picked. If he's surrounded by teammates who dont care about winning, he'll either not care about it as well or will have to mature faster and in turn will have a ton of pressure to succeed.

Look at Duncan when he landed with the Spurs. They were winning until the year when Robinson got injured and they landed him. He came in to a team whos expectations ar nothing but winning, and he was taught early in his career that theres no other way. Same qith Derrick Rose. Now both of them are obsessed with winning.

Then loom at Blake Griffin and imagine what his career with be without Chris Paul.

I get it, we will have a very good shot of being good next year with a top pick. But we can also rebuild by having a team who's hungry for wins. In turn the new players coming in will be expected to give notjing by great effort and not accept losing as an option.

You can have all the talent in the world, but without a womning mentality, your team will end up like Sacramento. I would rather be Indiana. A team that was built without a top 5 pick butws run by a winner and demands nothing but. Missed the playoffs but tried the hardest until eventually got really good because the guys coming In sees the value of winning.

I get the point. Were not good enough to win anything right now, so for now losing can be a bitter pill to swallow. But you dont encourage it, you try to win asuch as you can and build a habit of it despite the lack of talent. It builds character and a competitive mentality. Your notio. Is for our players to accept losing and be okay with it, well, yoyre superstar that you want to draft next year wi be the same or worse, will leave because he's surrounded by losers and are fine with it.
