Game Notes:
This is the first of 4 meetings with the Pistons this season.  The undersized Celtics will have their work cut out for them against the front line of the Pistons that includes 6'9" Josh Smith, 6'11" Greg Monroe, and 7' Andre Drummond.

The Pistons are 1-1 on the season.  They opened the season at home with a win over the Wizards and then lost to the Grizzlies on the road.  The Celtics, in the meantime, are still looking for their first win of the season.

The Celtics have started the same lineup in their first two games and they have started off both games fairly strong.  It may be a good idea to stick with the same starting lineup for awhile to give the team some continuity but Coach Stevens has said that he might change the starters from game to game.

Vitor Faverani has been a bright spot in the Celtics first two games and, especially against the big front line of the Pistons, he should get the start again.  Beyond that, any of the pieces may be interchangeable.  So, your guess is as good as mine as to who starts.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/vitor_faverani.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/andre_drummond.png)
Vitor Faverani vs Andre Drummond
Drummond is averaging 12 points and 12 rebounds so far this season while Faverani is averaging 12.5 points and 10.5 rebounds for the Celtics.  There should be a good battle in the paint between these two big men.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/jeff_green.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/chauncey_billups.png)
This is the one position where the Celtics have an advantage if Stevens sticks with the same lineup.  6'9" Jeff Green should have an advantage over 6'3" Chauncey Billups in size, speed and athleticism.  Hopefully the good Jeff shows up for this one.

Keys to the Game
Run, Run, Run - The Celtics showed that when they run and move the ball up the court quickly,  they do some good things.  They can't lapse into walking the ball up, playing half court and depending on iso's for scoring.

Focus and Effort- The Celtics must bring their focus and do the little things that help to win games.  They missed 12 free throws in the loss to the Bucks and that shouldn't happen.  They need to continue to play hard and put out the effort on the boards and on defense as well.

Move the Ball
- The Celtics moved the ball in the first half on Friday but in the second half, the ball movement would stop and players tried to do too much.

Teamwork - Hopefully the Celtics won't split into factions and point fingers at each other over the 2 losses so far.  They need to pull together and play as a team on both ends of the court.  Chemistry and teamwork are very important and as a young team,  they need to work at building both.

X-Factors
On the Road, focus, and Officiating

After losing 2 in a row, the Celtics need to focus on getting a win in this game in hostile territory. The officiating possibly had something to do with the Celtics' young players losing focus against the Bucks when they started falling for Pachulia's flops.  They can't let a couple of bad calls or the hostile atmosphere in the arena take away their focus if they want to stay in this game.

Detroit's not exactly a great team, but they are a bit better than the garbage teams we lost to in Games 1 and 2.  I fully expect us to start getting blown out once we start facing competent teams.  This might be one of them.

Still, it will be a fun ride.  I'm most interested to see Fav go against Drummond tonight.  Drummond is beasting.  That's going to be a great matchup to watch.   I use to think 20-year-old Drummond would be a good prospect to receive in a Rondo trade, but I can't really see the Pistons moving Drummond at this point.  He's the future of that team.  Let's see if Fav can hang with that size.

Beyond that, also interested to see if Sully can get some minutes vs Greg Monroe.  Detroit is big.  Josh Smith vs Jeff Green should be an interesting matchup as well.  I think Green is actually slightly bigger than Josh Smith.  Excited to see those guys throw down.

Should be a fun game.  My objectives are the same here as always.  #1 - Hard fought loss.  #2 - Develop the youngs.  #3 - Stat-padding for the crap contracts (Wallace/Lee/Bass).

Will the Celtics use the standard strategy of letting Josh Smith shoot open jumpers in the first quarter so he keeps shooting jumpers, open or not, in the fourth quarter?

hahaha  ;D

I'd love to see him play well.  I love Drummond though.  Shawn Kemp-esque.  I loved him in the draft and he is growing in the right way.

Often the silliest knock against a draft propsect: Low motor.  Drummond and Barnes both had that knock against them and both are very good young players who play hard.

I've been an AB defender on O, but he just doesn't make the shots.  They aren't bad looks either.  I don't know what to say.  Glad we haven't extended him.  If he comes along I'd love to sign him but if his offense doesn't grow I definitely don't want to be paying him like 6 mill per (the figure I've heard talked about).  TA only makes 4.

I kinda like Bass against Monroe. I think Monroe relies more on his quickness and agility to score the ball so I think Bass may be able to bother him a bit.

I would prefer Sully to Bass but not sure about Humphries over Bass. Humphries is pretty dodgy defensively. I think Monroe might be too smart for him. Anyway, I would like to stick with Bass for now and see how he fares against Monroe.

He'll be a fun distraction this year as this team plummets to NBA irrelevance.

I think Bradley has been thinking too much about his contract situation.. just keep playing the way you used to young fella!

Not really. He was doing the same crap last year when Doc made him the sole starting PG of the team.

It is irritating to see how often 3-4 guys will just stand around and watch the guard dribble. They are giving the lead guard no options. Be it A.Bradley or J.Crawford.

I want G.Wallace to go to the bench. I want Courtney Lee in that starting lineup instead.

Add another ball-handler + floor spacer into the lineup.

Gives the bench a sixth man who can make an impact and whose arrival onto the floor can offer all types of lineup options to the coaching staff. Go big on the wings with G.Wallace and J.Green. Go small with G.Wallace and J.Green at forwards. Or just play a normal lineup with Wallace checking in for J.Green.

That said, I have no idea why Det's announcers are blaming him for Drummond's dunk two possessions ago. Courtney Lee was beat in the post and given up the baseline. Olynyk had to come over. It was Gerald Wallace who was late with the help. Or even Bass. Not Olynyk.

Are the C's overmatch or just not playing hard?

They are a bit overmatched--particularly against those two studs on the interior.  They are playing hard, they just aren't playing very well.

They can make this a close game in the second half.

How good to you think Drummond can get in his prime?  He's 20.  When he was drafted they suggested his ceiling might be "bigger Amare in his prime".

I feel a little foolish for suggesting we could potentially trade Rondo + Wallace for Charlie V (expiring), Stuckey (expiring) and Drummond.  In retrospect, that's laughable.  THere's no way the Pistons would give up Drummond.

This is going to be a fun season...

The Pistons have a monster frontcourt, obviously we're going to struggle against them. If you can't make a shot for your life either, there's no secret why they're losing. Of course, they should try harder.

But yeah, Bradley's terrible, Wallace is right, Stevens isn't an NBA coach and Crawesome is poison. Really.

Go Celtics! Show some heart!

Overmatched.  The roster is set up to fail.  When Rondo gets back, we might putter along to 25 wins, but until then we're going to be horrible.  When we start playing competent teams, it's going to be ugly.  Major blowouts.

Neither. I mean, we're overmatched but the rotations have left a lot to be desired. We're getting killed on the boards and yet one of our best rebounders (Humphries) has yet to see minutes. And Avery, in spite of being useless on both ends of the floor, is still getting minutes. Lee and Crawford have both outplayed him, bench him and let him watch.

Are we watching the same game?  Drummond is beasting.  I'm not sure if the dude actually has post moves yet, because all we're seeing is dunks.  But I suggested multiple times over the summer that we could possibly net Drummond for Rondo.  A few people disagreed and said there was no way the Pistons would give up Drummond.  They were clearly right.  I admit when I'm wrong.  No way would Detroit swap Drummond for Rondo.  He's their future.

I think Monroe for Rondo is more reasonable, but there's no point to that.  The point was to dump bad contracts and get a guy on his rookie contract with serious potential.

Funny when I suggested Rondo + Wallace for Charlie V (expiring), Stuckey (Expiring) and Drummond... some fans reacted very negatively saying that was "nowhere near enough for Rondo".  Just LarBrd33 being cray-cray.  In retrospect, I was asking for too much.  That's obvious now.

There's no better option right now.  Bradley getting PG minutes is fine for the moment.  Long-term, he's probably a backup PG.  It's good for him to get his reps in now when there's no pressure to actually win games.

A couple years ago before Drummond was even drafted, I wanted to trade Pierce for a lotto pick.  I would have used it on Drummond.  Dude always had serious potential and he seems to be living up to it.   THat was my pipe dream back then... dumping Pierce for an expiring contract and Drummond.  OH well.

I think Jordan Crawford should start the second half against Chauncey Billups (SG).

Billups is a very good matchup for him. An older player. A limited scorer outside of spot-up shooting. Not much of a dribble drive threat. Vulnerable against quickness defensively. A PG who Crawford has the size + athleticism to cover on defense.

He's never really been a good shooter.  Not in college, not his rookie season, not last season... it was just a month where the dude shot like 66% from three while starting over Ray.  It wasn't sustainable.

I still like Bradley though.  He can be an effective defensive specialist off the bench.  Or long-term if we get a superstar like Wiggins... you could stick Bradley at the PG spot and just let him play defense and hit open shots.  No playmaking or anything.

Not a fan of the J.Green (SG) + G.Wallace (SF) wing combination as a starting combination.

I don't like how it works offensively. The PG play isn't dynamic enough. Neither are the bigs. There isn't enough floor spacing. A lack of ball-handling and playmaking help. Too often shrinks the floor and makes everyone's life harder.

He could have atleast, you know, pick his spots and be in a better position instead of just standing still.

I get that the play called is not for him, still not an excuse to just stay still, you keep moving and make the defense at least look like you're getting the ball.

Bradley is so, so bad at point guard.  I think the biggest criticism you can make of Stevens so far is that he's continued to play Bradley at point despite the fact that Bradley has never, in his entire NBA career, looked competent as a primary ball-handler.

Quickly switched over to the Nets game, silver lining to this painful Celtics game is that Pierce is clearly working on getting Brooklyn back in the game with a big drive and dunk.

Bradley seems like a hard worker and a good person, but he's going to have trouble sticking around in the NBA if his only NBA level skill is on-ball defense.

And I'll give him credit, he's finishing well tonight.  Looking more comfortable too.  Still optimistic on KO but he needs a chip on his shoulder down there.  Ideally one that makes him weigh about 20 more too.

Olynhyk with 5 fouls now. He has to learn to "give up" the play. Just too important out there to be fouled out.

I really hate Sullinger dancing around on the perimeter on the offensive end. He needs to live underneath the basket 24/7

So you know how the Celtics suck in the half-court?

Right now, they're last in the league in pace.

Something not quite right with that.

But Bradley shooting the 3?

FYI: Nets getting killed by the Magic
Is the 2014 pick unprotected?  Pierce should throw the season and come back to Boston next year.

They all are unprotected I believe.

So we have BOS, BRK, and LAC 2014 firsts?

Clipps is 2015.

Jordan's been really good in this game, but he's made a couple of terrible turnovers here in the last few possessions, and then he compounds it with a technical foul.

KO has impressed me tonight despite the physicality issues.  He's had some nice finishes, is moving pretty well on rotations already, and has the tools to get better.  Once the jumper starts falling he could be dangerous.

I'm proud of them tonight.  This is a real shame.  I hope we don't hear any nonsense about selfishness from Gerald Wallace after this one.

I agree.  Definitely earned the moral victory tonight.  The Celtics fought hard in this game, and did a lot of things well.  They never gave up.  But they simply don't have anybody who can run this offense, and the interior defense is pretty poor.

Chalk up another one boys.  3 down, 79 to go!

Good block by Kyle Singler

I really like that guy. Smart steady player. Can play three positions. Can shoot it. Decent defense. Makes good decisions on the ball. Fundamentally sound player.

Yeah, but that hairdo . . .

Can we bury him at the end of the bench yet? I don't care that he's "playing out of position." He's now manned the position for almost a year. You would think he would pick up a thing or two in terms of experience. Not to mention he's forcing shots left and right instead of moving the ball.

I guess if he's shooting and not moving the ball that means he isn't throwing it to the other team or making some boneheaded play...... SMH

Bradley killed us down the stretch.  Bad pass by Courtney Lee and he didn't step towards it (it was on Lee too)  but layup.   Two back to back TO's.   The PG experiment should end and hide him in a corner where he can drill the shot.   I realize we need his D but he is not a PG.

Either he benched Green because he's being passive or he's going into the disgraceful road of tanking.

I hope it's the former. Jeff should be more aggressive and I sure hope Stevens is giving him his due. Don't want to move on the court, then sit down.

Benching Fav though is a real head scratcher.

On 5 shots.

If he's our best player he should take more than five.

I did not see the entire game but happy enough to see the third to back up this claim.

Three possessions, he did nothing but stand up. He could at least, i don't know, ask for the ball. Or maybe he could at least move around and position himself better. Or maybe he could have move around and try to get open.

But no, he was just there, like a fan watching the game, only he's on the playing court.

Another respectable loss.  We kept it under 20.  2 out of 3 objectives complete.  I'll take it.

#1 - Hard-fought loss.  CHECK!

#2 - Good development out of Oly (15 points 8 boards), Bradley (13, 8, 3, 3) and Fav (8 points, couple boards and a block in 19 minutes).  CHECK!

#3 - The bad contracts failed to perform tonight.  Wallace, Bass and Lee all stunk it up.  No trade-value increasing stat padding from those losers.

2 out of 3 aint bad, but I need to see more production from the overpaid vets so we can trade those sacks of crap out of here.

Also want to see more from Obese SUllinger.  He hasn't been impressing me at all.

Overall, not a bad game.  B-

I really didn't think Rondo would make that much of a difference because of the shooting and defensive deficiencies but seeing as how the Celtics could be undefeated if they didn't dissolve into a puddle of turnovers late in the fourth quarter, he really might.  This team might be really solid with him back because he's sure not going to commit the same dumb turnovers that Bradley has in the 4th quarters.

Stevens has got to be tanking and showcasing. Wallace playing over Green is absurd. Wallace was terrible. Sullinger and Faverani are our two best big men, yet we get Bass and Olynyk for most of the game. I see Olynyk getting packaged with a pick and/or other players by February. Bradley is playing too poorly to get moved, but not giving him an extension made him much more tradeable to a team that needs a defensive guard down the stretch this season.

I really think he should make in bound passes at end game situations.

There's no reason to play Bradley at point guard.  It does him no good to handle the ball at all.  How is it helping his development to be put into a position to make so many mistakes?  He doesn't have a long history of success to draw back on him.  He's still trying to settle in going into his fourth season.  Just put him off the ball and limit him to spot up jumpers and cutting to the rim.  The guy is barely capable of throwing passes because he's so unsure of his handle.

Oh, and by the way, kudos to coach Stevens for having the stones to bench Jeff Green down the stretch in that game.

I sure didn't miss him.  Wake up, Jeff.

Huh? The guy shot 60% tonight. Don't quite understand the criticism, sorry.

In tonight's game Klynyk and Thumper were clearly our best bigs.  I don't even see how that's debatable.

Honest question--not trying to be a jerk--but, did you watch the game tonight?

I'm starting to wonder if you actually watched the game tonight

Yes, I did.  Anyway, sorry about that comment.  I honestly just wanted to know.  I guess I'll have to accept that you did, and just saw things differently than I did.

Oh and by the way.  KO is probably our best shooter passer and screener.
I really think he should make in bound passes at end game situations.

Too bad he can't pass the ball to himself when he is in the post.  He is our best post passer as well.

KO is definitely the 2nd best passer on the team and the best passer currently in uniform.
I agree.

Bradley has made some really big plays in the 4th quarter.

Too bad they won the pistons the game.

Is Humphries hurt?

the celtics have a bad offense, but they have absolutely no fourth quarter offense. a number of posters predicted this before the season started. there is no go-to player during crunch time anymore.

when the other team buckles down defensively, the celtics cannot move well enough off the ball to generate space and they do not have a single player capable of consistently winning against his defender in an iso situation.

as for bradley, i confess i admire his attempt to carry the team. but he just doesnt have the offensive skills to pull it off. he is trying so hard. rebounding, defending, stepping up and shooting, but as a pg he just is miscast.

i dont blame bradley for his poor pg skills. he is being asked to do something he just cant do well.

at this stage neither bradley nor crawford are pg material. cripes, if i had to watch crawford play point for 30 minutes ago i would have a seizure.

by process of elimination we may see pressey walking through that door. i dont have faith in an undrafted rookie to lead this team, but it would be worth seeing him play 10-15 minutes a night.

maybe stevens wants him to get more practices and learn more plays before throwing pressey to the lions. but i hope to see pressey soon.

pretty much. I watched the whole game, as I do almost every game regardless of how good or bad the team is. I saw some things I liked, but I also try to see things in the long term, and Green, Faverani, and Sullinger to me look clearly more talented than everyone else but Olynyk. Olynyk has his limitations though, and Wallace is a clueless malcontent who has lost a few steps over the years. Bradley is clearly not a PG. We badly needed a player who can create his own shot, and two of them, Sullinger and Green, rode the bench. Instead Lee and Bass and Wallace played major minutes. Go figure. Faverani is not only or best center, he is our only legit center, and yet Olynyk played center down the stretch. Showcasing imo.

Agreed.

He is such a heady player.  Does tons of things that won't show in start book.  I mean, little things like redirecting opposing guards with position defense and such.  He definetly understands angles.

Bradley
Lee
Wallace
Bass
Olynyk

The closing lineup and minutes distribution of the last 3 games tells me that Stevens is favoring effort over skills at this point.

Faverani's probably still recuperating from the preseason injury he had, the NBA workload, and the 37 minutes he played against the Bucks.

Also, I think Bass and Lee are going to continue to be showcased because they need their stats inflated for potential trades down the line.

that's a downright horrible lineup to closeout games if you are trying to win

Olynyk was our best center tonight.  Not only offensively, but more importantly, defensively.  I love what Hombre has shown so far in his short NBA career, but I absolutely agreed with coach Stevens' lineup to close out tonight's game.

Brandon was solid as well.  Sully may be more talented, but Bass has been playing better out there.

In retrospect, I would have liked to see Crawford finish out the game instead of Lee.  On the other hand, as well as he played for most of the game, he was making some bone headed plays towards the end of his stint.  Lee and Bradley were really hustling all night.  I thought they gave us a chance of turning defense into offense.

Jordan might have committed some terrible turnovers down the stretch as well.

The only way to keep Bradley's confidence is seemingly to not let him touch the ball. Fittingly, the best way to do this is stick him on the pine.

Being able to pass the ball laterally without turning it over is not a PG play -- it's a basic basketball play. It's unbelievable that a professional basketball player can look so fundamentally incompetent.
