PAPTBG Playoff Rules

Matchups

When all playoff seedings have been determined, the top seed will then pick for the league, (American or National), and team they prefer, with the other league being assigned to the second seed. The matchups will be as follows:

League 1

1st seed vs 8th seed  (1st seed gets choice of league and team)

3rd seed vs 6th seed  (3rd seed gets choice of team from remaining League 1 matchup)

League 2

2nd seed vs 7th seed  (2nd seed gets choice of matchup & team from remaining league)

4th seed vs 5th seed  (4th seed gets choice of team from remaining League 2 matchup)

Lower seeds must pick their players from their assigned teams, and you can only use a player once per series.

Re-seeding will be done with each new series, and the same preference of choices is given to the higher seeds. So if you are the higher seed and choose a particular team for the first series, it does not mean you have to keep using that same team if you make it to the next round.

Wins

To determine wins by game-to-game basis, the total number of bases decides the winner, if that's a tie, then it's the type of hit that determines the winner, (home runs beat triples, triples beat doubles, etc.), and if that's a tie, then the number of RBIs decide, if it's still a tie, then each player gets half a win.

As far as each series goes, the number of games won determines the winner. If the number of games won at the end of the series results in a tie, then the total number of bases decides the winner. If the number of bases earned results in a tie, then the type of hits decide the winner, (home runs beat triples, triples beat doubles, etc.). In the unlikely event that all these factors are still tied, then RBIs are used as the final tie-breaker.

Picks are due by the start time of each game, and missed picks, late picks, and DNPs, will result in a zero score for that game, or minus one base if the opponent earns no bases.

Please PM Bahku or 33-00-32 with any questions or concerns, or if you have any ideas about improving the game, just post them and we can kick them around a bit.

Thanks!

:)

Thanks again Bahku! This was a lot of work. I'm hopeful that we can get everyone to participate but I do seem to remember that CC isn't around this site anymore.

I will be playing and it will be great to get you and Slam and everyone else back into the game!

I'm going to go with the Sox now so we can get this moving a little. We need someone to step in and take the Sox opponents. No problem if you haven't played before it's easy and you will be rewarded with TP's.

Way to immediately put me out of my comfort zone.  The only National League team I am at all familiar with is Atlanta, so Atlanta Braves it is for me.

That's too bad d_l, would have loved your competitive spirit. I guess we have to decide whether we can grab 2 more teams or shrink this to 6?

Sorry boots, I thought it would be more fun to be cheering my Sox even though I think I hardly used them for picks during the season.

Is everyone  now relegated to  a League all throughout the playoffs  or is the seeding reset each round?  Sorry, I don't remember and can't find it....I have a feeling the answer is yes, because of the scheduling...but asking anyway.

My team pick is Atlanta Braves, my first player pick is Jason Heyward.  Now I am going to take a nap.  8)

(I seem to remember a rule that you can only select a player once per series, correct?  I am fast growing old, and my memory is declining.....)

Since we've now had two people bail, this is the match-ups, (unless we can find two people who haven't played this year to join us).

Redz can choose from remaining teams from either series. **

Why don't we go with the 6 of us.  The winners of the 3 series advance and the loser with the highest average TBs per game will get the 4th championship series round spot.

Well, unless we can find two other players, we really have no choice ... guess I should have clarified, but I assumed it was the obvious conclusion, as there would otherwise be no oppoinent for the last semi-final match-up. TP for the clarification ... my mind is just a spinning mess these days. ;)

** Leaders are marked in red, followers are marked in blue, and ties are marked in purple. All picks are due at the time of that game's start, and in case of a tie, the total bases difference decides the winner, if it's still a tie, then the type of hit decides, (HRs beat Triples, Triples beat Doubles, etc.), if still a tie, then RBIs decide. I was hoping to be able to pick American League...Rays are my team.  I even stayed up to watch both wild card games.  I will be watching to see how you do, Rondo2287.  Go Rays!   ;)

Big Papi loves hitting against the lefty Moore.

I was (and still am) a fan of the Red Sox.  I even personally knew a couple of them in the late 60's.  My most prized possession is of my dad playing golf with Yaz.

Tropicana Stadium was built before I moved to Florida, with no team to play in it.  They played basketball (college tournament) and tennis (Davis Cup) there and finally landed a baseball team.  It has been an interesting journey watching the new team go from the bottom to the top, and their scrappy play with no really big names, except those made right here, has really been fun. The rest of the league has sometimes used the Rays like a farm team...let the guy develop, then hire him away.  We are a small time team with little money or support who somehow find a way to win.

My husband is still a HUGE Red Sox fan...thank goodness we have two TVs!

You won't need two TV's to watch the Red Sox win their next series :)

Bahku, my friend, I didn't even realize that our first game is tonight!  Good luck.  I am really happy that you are my opponent and won't even be upset if you beat me...well, maybe just a little upset... ;)

This is the most fun time of the baseball year.

This is the most fun time of the baseball year.
I feel the same way, TB ... it's like I win either way, cuz I'm not competitive at all anyway, (lol - I know you know better - wanna buy a bridge that I own in London?). ;)

But seriously, this format is just so much fun, and I honestly don't understand why folks pass on it, cuz it's way better than the daily game, IMHO ... so many twists and turns, and you gotta guess when your biggest bats are gonna have their best night out of five, and that's tough.

You know me enough, (well, better than many people do, here and otherwise), to know that I wanna win as much as anyone does, but that's the best thing for me, if I don't win, it's still all fun, and still not as big a deal because I enjoy all you guys so much.

Fact is, I don't deserve to win, cuz I've been absent big-time this year, and I feel like it should go to one of the regulars, but if I should squeak through anyway, I'll deal with it, and certainly won't lose any sleep over winning, haha!

Problem with not having been regular is that I don't have anywhere near the same realistic perspective on the stats and hot-hitters and pitchers that I usually do by this point in the season ... I don't like that feeling.

Well, best of luck to all y'all, (especially you, TB, in this series) ... this is one of the few things that makes the approaching snow a bit more bearable, (a win wouldn't hurt either). :)

Funny thing about these Pick-A-Player Playoffs, though, I can NOT watch the game that my team/my pick is involved in ... not sure why, but I've never been able to do that.

One thing our "ripe" ages have afforded us, my friend, is knowing that this kind of luck never lasts.

That's why I'm short on banter during playoffs and why I never watch the games that I have a stake in, cuz I know it's just a matter of time before I'll be feeling the sting of reality.

If I say too much, that eventual embarrassment is all the harder to swallow. ;)

I know how a trapped animal feels!  Is 10 bases impossible to come back from?  Sure looks improbable...My husband was jumping up and down and saying, "I told you to pick the Dodgers...why don't you ever listen to me?!!!" This is where I go into my stubborn stature and say, "If you want to play, join, sign up, commit" (and I don't mean me).   ;)

I'd say you're pretty safe Bahku.  Even if you lose the series somehow, the worst your averAge is going to be is 2.6  which should be more than enough to grab the 4th spot!

I'm going with Torii Hunter fir game 2

Go Sox!

I didn't say I gave up on you! I just gave a hypothetical glass half full view for Bahku given the infinitesimally small chance that you happen to come back and win the series.  ;D

It was all very positive TB

Well, it sounds like the most questionable positivity that I have heard yet!  I am still going to wear my Rally Kitty TB tee shirt!  I know you have seen me with a full head of steam, and probably don't want to listen to a TB rant,  ;)

It is a good thing Bahku is my friend or I might take offense at this rough treatment.  Doesn't he know "Age before beauty" or "Ladies before gentlemen"?  Or maybe he thinks he is letting me sit down first....gee whiz, Bahku, I didn't look at it that way...Thank you, I guess...but it really isn't necessary.

Time to take a flyer...

Evan Gattis, Atlanta Braves.

He didn't do much in the regular season, hope he can continue to surprise me in the post season.

(Maybe next time I will listen to Wally.  Nah....too stubborn!  ;D )

Missed picks, late picks, and DNPs, will result in a zero score, or minus one base if opponent gets a zero. Thanks to everyone for playing/helping this year, we hope to see you again next season, and try to bring someone new with you ... the more the merrier! **

No.

I can't speak for Redz, but a walk takes no talent and is not really "earned", so it makes little sense to me.

This, (and the other Pick-A-Player games), have generally been more about the talent and achievements of the player than just about adding empty stats.

Again, just my opinion ... Redz started all this, it's his creation, so it's really his call, but that's pretty much what I've assumed from the parameters to this point.

Good for discussion, though, if anyone wants to continue or would also like to consider it seriously.

I guess I gave my vote at the top of this post.

I of course respect you opinion, but disagree.   ;D

Say you are watching a 10 pitch Dustin Pedroia at bat in which he battles, fouls off pitches and ultimately draws a walk.  I would argue that takes just as much skill as somebody hitting a seeing eye single up the middle of the infield or something.

And you could also pay any Joe Schmoe to stand at the base and let the ball go by ... only a skilled player can hit the ball consistently, it'd take some high odds for Joe to even get the bat around in time to be close.

True, but if a player didnt have the skill to hit the ball the pitcher could just fire them down the middle and not worry about having to pain the corners and risk walking a guy if he misses his spot

I learned a long time ago not to lock horns with you, Buddy, but there are certainly points to both sides.

Doesn't feel right to me ... I probably shouldn't have sounded like it was such an empirical answer, though, lol.

I was trying to make parallels to one of the other games, but couldn't come up with a solid one ... baseball really is pretty unique in that way.

Sometimes the rules are just the rules.  When I first started playing, I remember thinking every base counted, not just the bases actually gained by a hit.  (If a guy hit a single, but scored, for example, but no...it is bases actually hit by that batter.)  If you want to start another game with different rules, maybe that would be your solution, although I know Bahku and Redz always welcome questions and suggestions.

All I know is I would be pretty bummed out if this walk never happened

http://voices.yahoo.com/the-most-significant-stolen-base-mlb-history-12273392.html

Quote
Dave Roberts, 2004, #1

Only slightly less talked-about but far more significant, a steal of second base captures the crown. As a Yankee fan, I still cringe at this play and what followed it. However, as a baseball fan, I am happy to have seen it live. The extraordinary rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox has too many incidents to discuss in detail. This moment, though, changed on team's entire history.

It was the 2004 American League Championship Series. The Yankees led the series 3-0. They also led 4-3 in Game 4 with Mariano Rivera on the mound. Kevin Millar drew a lead-off walk, putting the potential tying run on base. Then, the most-expected move happened. Dave Roberts pinch ran.

Roberts spent most of 2004 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He stole 33 bases before the Red Sox picked him up at the trade deadline - for just this situation. Roberts was a very fast runner and successful base stealer. Everyone in the game and watching knew what Roberts would do. Rivera delivered; Roberts ran. If he were unsuccessful, the Yankees would win the ALCS over Boston for the second straight year and third straight postseason meeting between the two (1999). The video shows that Roberts beat the throw on a close play, but he was clearly safe. What followed became legendary.

Roberts scored the tying run on a Bill Mueller single. The game went 12 innings before Boston's David Ortiz homered to win it for the Red Sox. Boston then swept the next three games to win the ALCS and advance to the World Series. This was the first time in MLB history that a team trailing 3-0 in games came back to win a best-of-seven postseason series of any kind. Finally, Boston swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series.

I was in a meeting and thought about this walk so I had to post it haha.

I understand your point, but in this particular game you can win even if your team loses because it is based on the bases made on hits and not on the number of runs made.

Right right, I am only advocating treating a single and a walk as equivalent.  that way you can still win even if your team loses.

I don't agree with you, because I think that has nothing to do with anything the batter has control of...that is the pitcher's chess game.  You don't know if the batter would have flied out, struck out, or hit a home run.  I have nothing to do with the rules, I just like the discussion.  Soooo...how far do you think the rules should be changed?  Should a hit batter be awarded with a  base hit (that he might have made)?  Maybe it should be decided on batting average.  Since this is just a quick, fun game that is played every day in season,  and since there is so much administrative work that goes into it, I suggest we stick to the present rules and not make it even more difficult and time consuming for the people who administer it.

And what about the players who move from second-to-third or first-to-second on a walk? They're advancing bases, too, and if walks were allowed, wouldn't those have to be added under the same rule? Just seems "off" to me, and a bit too grey.

Yup.  Walks are as good as a hit, and a wonderful way of getting on base, but as a stat they don't have anything to do with Total Bases.

** Congratulations to 33-00-32 and Redz, who both win their series 3/1, + 3 bases ... they both move on to the next round. Not sure how this should go, but I assume that 33-00-32 earns a bye in the Semi-Finals and Redz picks conference and team against Bahku, (that's Redz's call). Thanks to Rondo2287 for being available for the playoffs and to Greenfaith1819 for a great run this season ... hope to see you both next Spring! (TPs to all). **

I think we decided we would bring the top base getter from the 3 losers as the 4th seed and my challenger as the #1 seed. Bahku & Redz will oppose each other in the division series remaining after I choose.

I believe the 4th seed would go to the lady in boots as she had the highest bases of the 3 losers with 6 bases. Now I'm sure she will go on to use the aforementioned boots and her bases skills to kick my...butt!

Good luck to all. I think I'll be taking the Sox as it's more fun to cheer for my team but I'll more formally announce that later.

TP's to GF and Rondo for taking part in the playoffs and Bahku for sorting this all out!

yup

TB moves on.  I'd suggested we used average TBs/game since there might be an uneven amount of games in different series, but either way it comes up TB as our Wild Card winner

Thanks ... I knew something had been put forth, but didn't have time to go back through the thread, (or maybe just lazy). (TP)

I'll have the Big Board up soon after the last game, but folks can post their first picks anytime after teams are picked.

I think I set a playoff record for myself ... doubt I'll even get a third of that score this time around.

;D

And they're sure as heck warmed up, lol.

That's OK, I've always had pretty good luck with the Cards in this game, (tho it may take more than that to keep up with the LAD bats) ... especially in the post-season.

What's up with Carl Crawford hitting like Mickey Mantle?

Yeah, really, huh?

I almost picked him in my last game, but I thought there was no WAY he would have two big games in-a-row.

Wrong.

Dont' you mean the good penny? ;)

I feel much better now, actually ... not the betrayer/giant killer I thought I was, (maybe that's what's been keeping me from sleeping?).

But all those bases for nothing ... sheesh!

When should we tell her that ss the wild card she has to blindfolded with one arm tied behind the back and she can only use pitchers (pray for more Joe Madden-like  moving the DH to the field moves)

Papi is 3 for 3 with 2 dingers lifetime against Anibel so might as well go for it....

Jacoby Ellsbury is my guy to even this thing up:)

Man are those Tiger pitchers looking tough, probably going to regret having TB back in the game.

Just as I feared...but at least it looks like we both wasted potential multi home run games from Papi and Cabrera.

I does look like it is going to be a pitchers duel of a series.  Sanchez was terrific, and he isn't even the club Ace!  It looked like every batter was perfectly planned and executed! (no pun intended,  ;))

If it is a pitchers duel...looks to be a loooong series for us, though.

I'm going to have a rough time winning if I don't get a hit at some point!  (perhaps we should consider that walks thing after all  ;) )

Carl Crawford for Game 3 please.

Han Ram out hurts.

A rather underwhelming semi-finals to this point as far as hits go, let's hope it warms up.

But a clutch 8th inning single by Crawford got me on board and evened us up!

I'll go with Han Ram for game 4 (though I might switch if they report he is out)

Really not liking the Verlander matchups or the fact I picked a team that isn't hitting. What a game that last one was!

I guess I'll hope it goes to enough games to allow me to get back in this thing. I'll take Will Middlebrooks in game 3 just on a hunch.

The Pick-A-Player moronic move of all-time ... I don't deserve to win after this, (and I've been spelling his name with a "J"!).

And after setting a bases record in round one, too ... sheesh!

Seven hours sleep in eight days, and I have now officially lost my mind. :o ::) >:(

No more heads-ups from me, ( I have enough trouble beating myself!) ... a pox upon thee! ;)

I won't concede but might as well. Hopefully there aren't enough games left in this series for me to catch TB.

I'm going with Shane Victorino for game 4, would be nice to get at least a base before TB eliminates me for good.  :D

Well, our flubs certainly make for an interesting series ... it will be interesting to see what happens if this goes to seven games.

I know it wasn't intended, but TP for making me feel not quite so bad, (all though mine still is the moronic one). ;)

Thanks, man ... I was thinking the same thing, (AJ, too).

Really surprised that the Cards were so dominant tonight ... just felt like it would be an LA kind of game, but it totally changed.

Good series either way.

Man, I'm glad I checked the lineups at 8:10 or so ... not something I do all the time, but I was looking for pitcher stats and decided to double-check while I was there. Doesn't make up for my duplicate pick fiasco, but I'll take it. ;)

** Congratulations to ThirstyBoots18, who comes from the default Wild Card spot to defeat 33-00-32 by a very close three-games-to-three, plus four bases ... she moves on to meet Bahku in the 2013 PAPTBG World Series! A very sincere thank-you to 33-00-32 who took over this game mid-season when I ran out of time to do so ... we most likely would not have had a playoffs this year if it wasn't for him. Also, the same wishes to Redz for a great series and for coming up with these games we've all become addicted to ... pretty amazing how they've developed over the years. TPs to all, and please feel free to send them some more. Hope to see TZT and Redz next spring for the 2014 season. I will be picking teams for the World Series ... really want to take the Sox, but not sure I want to risk what has become my relatively consistent jinx of them. Think I'll take a day-or-two to mull it over. Thanks! **

Wow, TZT.  If there had been just a little breeze, that foul ball might have blown fair...to a home run.  Soooo close.  Thank you for a fun series.  Go Sox.  All the way!

I'm so happy the Sox are in the fall classic. After last year I thought it might be years before they were back. Also happy two great people are meeting in our finals, good luck to TB and B! I'll be watching your game and rooting for you both! GO SOX!!!

Despite my fairly consistent jinx of them in the past, (and the great results the Cards have given me multiple times in previous series/seasons), I'm going to go with the Boston Red Sox for the World Series ... too many mixed emtions otherwise. ;)

I'll get the Big Board up soon.

Tomorrow is a really busy day for me, so I will make a pick now.

St Louis Cardinals, Allen Craig, DH.

Tight schedule tomorrow, so just in case I'm going to go with Victorino for game one ... I'll try to get the Big Board up before game time.

And so my consistent jinx of Red Sox players continues ... pretty much the only guy who didn't get a hit tonight was Victorino.

Amazing ... this is gonna be a breeze for you, TB.

I knew when I picked them, but I just couldn't bring myself to do the "Root for the traitor but root for my team, too" thing.

Whatever ... as long as the Sox dominate in wins I'll be OK with losing, (yeah, right).

No poisoned-tipped darts of opponent wisdom?

Isn't that what this game is all about? ;)

The last time I opposed you, Bahku (seems like just yesterday...) that breeze you mentioned blew a gale,  and knocked me down a peg or three.

My  advice to you is have fun.  My advice to me is go into survival mode and hope.... I am really hoping for a tie,  ;).  Is a tie even possible in this game?

I do not want to lose...nice of you to give me a one base lead, right off the bat considering what you could have done...but I have no doubt that those great Boston hitters will carry you onward and upward.  (You can not possibly keep picking the few with 0 hits, can you?  If you can, I would appreciate it...)

It looks like we are both saving our big guns, Bahku.  You know what is going to happen?  When we finally decide to use them....intentional walks!  Beltran's ribs didn't seem to bother him last night.  My second guessing is in overdrive.

Exactly right, TB ... the reason I didn't use Papi last night was because I thought he probably wouldn't have two big nights in-a-row, (the same reason I didn't use him for game three) ... if he has another five-plus night on Saturday I'll be really upset.

(And just because I said that he probably will). Thing is, if I change my pick to him he'll most likely come up blank, and the Sox need this game two to get the momentum back.

Look who has hits again, almost everyone BUT Pedroia!

It's really quite amazing ... AND discouraging.

Oh, I love amateur psychoanalysis!   The jinx might be that you are so sure you are going to lose, you subconsciously  sabotage yourself in your picks!

How is that for mumbo jumbo?   ;D  (Of course, that is exactly what it is...pure mumbo jumbo and bologna!)

The proof that it is a nutsy theory is what you did to me the last time we were matched up in this game!  Pure luck is all it really is, either yours or mine.  Bonne chance!

Yeah, I guess so, though I don't think it's going to matter much, down three games-to-nil.

Yeah, speaking things into existence ... it only seems to work for negativity, though, at least for me.

Oh, I'm not too excited, TB, I've got to win the next two games, (at the least), and do so with the bottom of the batting order, and I hold no illusions about the odds of that actually happening. A couple more wins and I'll be encouraged ... for now this is just a last gasp. I'm too old to get excited about things before they actually occur ... if it happens, it happens. (I like to think that's some sort of wisdom, but it's more like PTSD ;)).

Wow, Bahku.  I may have been called a lot of things, but I think this is the first time for "formidable"...since it is Halloween, I will take that into consideration,  ;) .

It was fun, and I am glad that the Red Sox pulled through for you.  Thanks to you and TZT for keeping this game going this year (through a few tough patches).

I missed the final of this whole thing. I think I'm losing my head at times lately. It was really great that when my calendar became overwhelming that Bahku could jump in and see this to the end, I couldn't have done it. Thank you my friend!

And now to my friend from the south :)

Congrats TB!! You see I wasn't trying to keep you from the AL in the beginning, I was setting you down a path for victory!! It was good to see someone who stuck with it all season take the win. Congrats again and TP's to you both.

See you all again next season!
