Game Notes
The Celtics travel to Madison Square Garden to take on the Knicks for the 4th and final time this season.   Although the Knicks have taken the Atlantic Division crown from the Celtics, there is still plenty to play for in this one.  First and foremost, this may be a preview of the first round playoff matchup if the standings remain as they are now.  Second, these teams really don't like each other and there is pride involved.

Third, there could still be some shake up in the standings and the Celtics could move up in the standings whereas, the Knicks are trying to hold off the Pacers and keep from dropping to the 3rd spot.  The Celtics are 3 games in front of the Bucks, who are in the 8th spot.  They are also 1.5 games behind Chicago in the 6th spot and 2 behind Atlanta in the 5th spot.  The Knicks are just percentage points in front of the Pacers and need the win to stay in the 2nd spot.

The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games while the Knicks are 7-3 in their last 10 games.  The Knicks are a good home team with a 26-10 record at MSG, but one of those 10 losses was to the Celtics.  The Celtics haven't played well on the road but must find a way to win away from TD Garden since they must win on the road in the playoffs.  The Celtics are just 13-23 on the road, but again, one of those 13 wins is against the Knicks.

The Celtics are looking for their 3rd straight win while the Knicks are on a 7 game win streak, looking for their 8th straight win.  The Knicks are in the final game of a 3 game home stand.  The Knicks are looking to win the season series with the Celtics for the first time since the 2003-2004 season.

The game notes have the same big starting lineup that Doc has used i the past two games.   He has said that he's not sure who will start each game, but that lineup is 2-0 and so it seems logical to stick with it while they are winning.   Hopefully the bench will also produce as they did against the Hawks.

Key Matchups
(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Wilcox_Chris_BOS.jpg)  vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Martin_Kenyon_den.jpg)
Chris Wilcox vs Kenyon Martin
Kenyon Martin had 9 points and 5 rebounds in the Tuesday's game and afterwards said that he had a chip on his shoulder against the Celtics for backing out of a deal to sign him.  Danny since said that he never talked to Martin so he may even have more fuel to his fire in this game.  Chris has to be aggressive on both ends of the court.

(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Green_Jeff_BOS.jpg)  vs  (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Anthony_Carmelo_nyk_11.jpg)
Jeff Green vs Carmelo Anthony
Paul Pierce has said that the toughest matchup for him in the league is Carmelo Anthony.   If Doc sticks with the big starting lineup he has used in the last 2 games, it will fall to Jeff Green to try to stop him.  Slowing Melo down is key as the Knicks go as Melo goes.  In the last 7 games between these two teams,  in the Knicks 4 wins, Melo has averaged 32 points per game, but in their 3 losses, Melo has averaged just 23.7 points per game on 34% shooting.

Keys to the Game
Stop JR Smith - JR Smith has emerged as the Knicks top gunner.  In Tuesday's game against the Celtics, Smith scored 32 points off the bench.  He then went on to score 35 against Memphis and 37 against the Bobcats, both Knicks' wins.  It will be crucial for the Celtics to try to slow Smith down and keep him from having another big game.

Defense
- The Knicks have been playing good defense since Woodson took over as coach and the Celtics have also gotten back to their defensive roots, although they have also strayed from it in some games.  The Celtics have to make defense their priority in this game especially because the Knicks can be a very dangerous offensive team.   The Celtics must especially guard the perimeter as the Knicks are 2nd in the league in 3 pointers made and they aren't shy about shooting them.  But they also have to guard the paint because the Knicks have several players who can take it strong to the hoop like Melo, KMart, and Smith as well.

Rebound
- The Celtics are 29th in the league in rebounding  but he Knicks aren't all that much better, coming in at 24th.  Chandler is questionable for this game and they will be a bigger threat on the boards if he plays.    The Celtics have got to crash the boards as a team and win the battle on the glass if they want to win this game.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to be aggressive in going to the hoop and not settle for jumpers, especially if the jumpers aren't falling.  They must be aggressive on the boards and in going after loose balls and winning the 50/50 plays.  The more aggressive team gets the calls from the officials and that will be important in this game.   We know that the Knicks will be aggressive and so the Celtics have to match that intensity.

Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics must get off to a good start and play hard for 48 minutes in this game.  The Celtics have gotten off to strong starts only to collapse and give up big leads.  They have also gotten off to slow starts and sometimes have come back and other times have not been able to catch up.   They may get away with slow starts or with letting up in the game with some teams, but they can't count on the Knicks to let them back in if they get themselves down in this game.

X-Factors
Focus On the Road
The Celtics have been terrible on the road this season and that's putting it mildly.  They have won just 13 games away from home this season.  It will be crucial for the Celtics to find a way to get back to winning on the road since they won't have home court in the playoffs and will need to win on the road then.  This would be a good time for them to find that focus and prove that they can beat a quality team on the road.

Doc, limit the Captain's minutes tonight to 24. Free him in the 4th quarter though to score the winning shot.

More minutes for the Chinese 3, Wilcox and Crawford. We want the Knicks in first round, so any outcome will be good for us.

Go Celtics!

TP, FL. Great game preview.

Hope Bradley can get into Jr´s head, he´s been on a roll lately. Would be huge if we could limit him to 10/15 points.

I'm a big big big Bradley homer.  I loved what we saw out of him when Ray went down.

But man he has been horrible on offense lately, and even his defense has been significantly worse.  There is no way he isn't injured.

Also the perimeter defense has been pretty horrible so far.  Offense looks okay.

Lebron and Melo are special. Small forwards that can play pf. Like Mark Aguire back in the day. Pierce not so good at it. Green a little better, but seems more comfortable at the 3.

Bass has been playing very well lately
Bass is a better post defender than Shav
Bass is a better pick and roll player
Bass is a better perimeter defender can switch and guard 3s
Bass is a better shooter
Bass is a better post player
Bass is the superior player to Shav in almost every single way except rebounding.

However, I did advocate for him to get signed.

Whatever, so did everyone else.

He was had worse numbers than the other guys we signed and hadn't showed ANY signs of recovering or his knees not looking like Jello every time he walked.

It happens.  Ainge doesn't have a crystal ball.  Sometimes you miss out.  EVERY sign, EVERY metric pointed to him being done.

nice effort...too bad you are wrong...Bass has a good game every now and then....but too few for his minutes....way too few......no rebounds and a LOT of taken shots.....slim effort when he CAN play......shav blocks many more shots on ALL..and has played much less.....but you and doc love bass.....i see his talent....but he doesn't bring it much, not as much as he can.....he cost us that game vs miami when he could have easily dunked...instead a lazy lay attempt, then miami won by THAT 2.....typical....he has good games.....but he could be consistant....

Bass is no superstar, but to think Shav is suddenly the answer, you are a bit over the top. Shav had a great game against Atlanta, and may well make a difference tonight, but really? you want to insert him into the lineup like he is the key man? Bass is not playing badly tonight and I don't even like Bass. If we can get a decent game out of Bass and have Shav come in off the bench, things will be much better than the other way around.

well, his reply was too pointed....i like shav....sure, different....play him...well of course i would...i always play the hot player....they try harder when they know someone else wants their minutes.....we need rebounds...it hurts the other team....what bass does...all the guys can do...his outside shot..somewhat consistant...so what.anyone can do that..we need a rebounder/shot blocker....it changes everything more than a guy who shoots a 10 footer does. Bass has great skills, he just doesn't try hard all the time.

Well Shav has been awful so far, so maybe Doc is wiser than us when it comes to making his lineups.

One thing that isn't mentioned about Crawford much - his court vision is much better than I expected.  He's actually a good and willing passer.  I thought he was a black hole.

Shav working hard, looks nervous. Hard to rebound when it's 1 on 4.

besides, directly comparing bass and shav....how can we.....bass has been here for 2 years...playing a LOT...gets FIRST look passes, expected to shoot....shav has  been here 2 months...maybe.....gets little looks, little passes.....so actually that makes shav look better....he made his own spot. no one SET HIM up....he went and got the ball.

well, his reply was too pointed....i like shav....sure, different....play him...well of course i would...i always play the hot player....they try harder when they know someone else wants their minutes.....we need rebounds...it hurts the other team....what bass does...all the guys can do...his outside shot..somewhat consistant...so what.anyone can do that..we need a rebounder/shot blocker....it changes everything more than a guy who shoots a 10 footer does. Bass has great skills, he just doesn't try hard all the time.

Well Shav has been awful so far, so maybe Doc is wiser than us when it comes to making his lineups.

I want February AB back  :( ...He has to have some sort of injury, cuz his defense is starting to slip some too.

so when Bradley sucks, he must have some sort of injury, and when Green struggled, he was just called horrible and weak-minded  ::)

I don't know who you're referring to because I've always given Green the benefit of the doubt especially after coming off a major surgery, so that probably needs to be directed to someone else.

Doc will try same strategy. It does not work!!! Has tried it for two games this week and nothing. But I guarantee you, he will try it in the 2nd half.

Why not try something different? Go real big. And keep it that way. What could it hurt? Pound them inside and on the boards. Play everyone straight up, no help.

I really hate Avery's game right now.  What the heck is he doing?  He can't make shots, he turns the ball over and he commits terrible fouls every game that gets him out of the game and helps get the Celtics into the penalty.  I don't even care if they're bad calls against him; it happens every game, at some point, the guy has to back off and stop committing pointless fouls.

What the heck happened to his movement off the ball?  He's playing to his weaknesses or Doc is by having him on the ball so much.

-Definitely..they just don't pose a major threat...yeah they'll win a game or two, but I don't see them winning an entire seriesl

Man you all give up too easily.

???? Everything is going the knicks way. Pointing that out doesn't mean we're "Giving up". When the knicks are hitting 3's tho they're nearly unbeatable.

Well, 3 people basically said that they were "out" or turning off their TV, so I could only infer that they were giving up on the game.

Yeah cosign. The only team I seen that went far with that scheme was when the Magic made it to the Finals in '09. But even the Magic also played pick and roll wit Howard

It will be sweet to see all of these frontrunners on the Knicks get beat in the playoffs though, hopefully by us.

Knicks keep a big in though. K-Mart or Copeland. And Carmelo is as big and powerful as a PF. Hard to stop. Very similar to how they were playing at the beginning of the season. Amare messes up the chemistry. They will only be better when Chandler gets healthy.

I'm sure he can't be negative towards the team on a general basis (wouldn't think that applies to particular plays or perhaps even a game) but he's made a number of valid points about this team and questionable coaching over the years.  would have liked to have seen the C's try to bring him back instead of hiring Doc but guess that's just crazy on my part.  would love to see 70's style C's basketball brought back to the current NBA.

You are my favorite coach of all time.

Pierce is hurt? Ice on foot while sitting on bench, much like KG had.

Can't keep watching. C's got killed behind tha 3 point line. Nobody outside of Pierce and Green really gave much effort. This game is depressing unless you're a Knick fan. Time to catch up on Walking Dead.

The rebounding on this team is ridiculous.  How can Pierce outrebound his own teammates?  He's only 6'7 at that.  When Ainge is thinking of re-signing Bass for 18 million over 3 years, does he not consider that Bass does only one thing well and that one thing is not what a team should be engaging in too much?  Bass was a horrible rebounder and defender last season.  They certainly didn't win because of what Bass did.  And here is Ainge, giving out a contract to the worst rebounding big in the league when that's our biggest weakness.

This team has not rebounded since 2008.  It's been a long time and it hasn't been addressed.  I don't get it.

4 total points from our starters not named Green or Pierce.

My god that's disgusting and inexcusable.
I'm not watching the game, but I thought you meant 4 points per player... until I saw the scoreboard. 4 points total is comeletly inexcusable and disgusting.
Also a 35 yr old SF should NOT be leading in rebounds especially by such a wide margin.

Now it's 6 points total.

He's an average coach, but if you were to look at his salary, you would think he's the second coming of Red Auerbach.

The Celtics tried to get too many switches tonight on offense.  It was just so slow and methodical.  It took forever to get a switch, then to feed the post only to have the Knicks quickly double team and the Celtics hurry the ball to an available shooter with the shot clock going down.  The Knicks didn't have basket protectors and the Celtics should've just tried fanning out and penetrating over and over.  They tried to take advantage of size mismatches and it didn't work and they adjust.

Why do we switch on defense all the time now?  I don't remember all this switching when Garnett was in the lineup.  What's the difference.  This is like pre-Thibideau Doc again.  Doc has to be the most overrated coach.

Cs today played a horrible defensive game. Knicks are very good shoting team. They have a great GM who got in 2-3  years great shooters like Jr Smith, Novak, Prigioni etc, instead of Cs GM who is discovering cheap junk in chinese league.

I understand that KG is presently on the shelf, but I am still stunned to see a Celtic starting lineup of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-7 and 6-8.

I played small college basketball 25 years ago and our starters weren't too far off from what the Celtics are currently trotting out there to compete in the NBA.

But Danny wanted to convert his big, physical championship team to a more stylish small-ball group and he has unfortunately succeeded. if memory serves me, we were leading the Eastern Conference when Danny's makeover began - I think we are presently hanging on to the 7th seed for dear life.
