Title: who would you want to replace DOC when he is done?
Post by: Ogaju on March 30, 2013, 12:27:52 AM
Of the present corp of NBA or college coaches who would you want to replace Doc, should he decide to hang it up with KG and PP in a couple of years?

My choice is Mark Jackson.

HANDS DOWN MAN DOWN.....MAMA HERE COME THAT MAN!!!!

I'm pretty partial to ol Kevin McHale right now, but it's gonna be a hardcore rebuild when Doc leaves, so Id go with Scott Skiles for 3 seasons so he can turn the scrappy bunch of youngsters into killing machines, then they can tune him out, and we can bring in Kevin McHale.

Outside the box choice, Shane Battier in 3.5 years. He's gonna be a rockstar coach.

Oh my how could I not remember Kevin McHale. Can I change my choice? If so, I will go with McHale.

Not necessarily in order: Popovich, Krzyzewski, Thibs, McHale, Calipari, Karl, Williams, Carlisle, Self, (and of course Jackson, if he could be coaxed out of retirement, though he really doesn't qualify for this list, technically) ... that's a good start. ;)

Scalabrine, if he ever decides he wants to coach...I think he would be great at it.

Chauncey Billups when he decides to hang the boots up is gonna make a killer coach.

although depending how young we are Skiles would be a good option. You will have Rondo as a vet who as adopted KG's persona and you will have a couple of other vets on the team that will put the celtics attitude into the young bloods

I agree with Ogaju on Mark Jackson. I would love to have that brotha coaching tha Celtics. I love his passion and approach to tha game. He's one of them old school cats. But I look at how he turned tha Warriors around and have them in tha playoff race. He's done a great job. He's another coach that gets tha most from his players imo. I would like to see Mchale coach tha Celtics. But I like him in my Hometown in Houston.

Honestly, outside of Pop, Thibs, and McHale there's really no one I would want to coach this team. I wish Doc would stay longer with us to help us win more championships. He's top 5 coach right now in the league and has a ring to prove it.

I'll take Kevin McHale, Mark Jackson, Rick Adelman, Scott Skyles or Scal..all capable, IMO.

I'd even consider our own Paul Pierce as an assistant...he's got a sound basketball mind, too.

KG as a Defensive coach...not sure how much basketball he'd want to be involved with, though....I thought I read somewhere that he wants to go away from the game for like 5 yrs once he's through.

Kevin McHale on our sidelines would be rather special.

I would love to get Larry Bird back in the Celtics family.  Maybe Scal as an assistant coach.  (I know it ain't gonna happen, though, just pondering out loud.  ;))

I don't know any names, but I hope they hire another someone who is from the Popovich coaching line.

Or Charles Barkley.

scal has gone on record on T&R saying he doesn't want to be a head coach, but would love to be an assistant somewhere.

Garnett? Nahhe wouldn't want to..

Probably someone who isn't a big name. Develop the new coach, hopefully (s)he is more offensive-minded though! I can't wait for an offense-orientated coach!

If that's what you want, Mike Brown is available.

Seriously, though, current Nets assistant Mario Elie seems to be a popular pick as a future head coach.  Maybe Bruce Bowen would be interested in following the broadcast-to-bench route.

if i go with a current college coach, its jay wight at nova or shaka stevens at vcu.  I believe doc will be around a few more years thus allowing these two to ain more experience.

if i go with a current or former nba coach, call me crazy, i like pj and believe he'd be available.  i also like svg and mike dunleavy.

I think I would have to see Tom Thibodeaux improve on offense and in his ability to manage minutes before I would feel comfortable seeing him as a Celtics head coach.

Yeah, it's a shame he didn't learn from Doc in those particular aspects of coaching...   ;D

I'd love Larry Bird as our coach or GM, but that would probably mean Danny is gone. If it's a rebuilding thing, McHale, Carlisle or Mark Jackson. Adelman or George Karl(the best outside Popovich) would be great for a couple of years, and Scals could be an assistant, Dooling or Cassell also.

But Doc will stay a Celtic for some time, and I like him as a person and as our coach, even if he drives us nuts with his rotations. We can enjoy the present and leave this for the future.

Oh my god there is no reason I've never seen that before. Holy crap on a stick. Man that was awesome. If Danny did that today there wouldn't be any 'we can't know the mind of Danny Ainge', it'd be a multiple game suspension.

Maybe Ainge values Rondo more than most because he sees him as a kindred spirit.

Danny was such a hard nosed player. He loved to rough it up...

but  I have always maintained that the practice of throwing the ball hard at an opponent to get an out of bounds play should be ruled unsportsmanlike conduct that draws a personal and technical foul. If BB is a non-contact foul why should you be allowed to use the ball as a projectile against an opponent?
