Hawks Assistant Coach Lester Conner was an Assistant Coach with the Celtics from 1998-2004

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/BassBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/atlanta/JSmithAtl.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs Josh Smith
Smith is a very athletic and quick power forward and  Brandon must box out and keep Smith off the boards along with slowing him down on offense.    Smith is averaging 17.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game so Bass will need to be aggressive on defense to keep Smith from having a big game.  If Bass continues to struggle as he has in recent games, it might be a good time to give DJ White some run.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/atlanta/HorfordAtl.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Al Horford
Al Horford is playing well and is averagin 17.4 points and 10.0 rebounds per game and KG will have his hands full keeping him away from the basket.  Not only KG and Bass are key, but also the bigs off the bench as well.  Al Horford scored 21 points to go with 12 rebounds and six assists in the Hawks win over the Sixers on Wednesday.

Honorable Mention
Avery Bradley vs Jeff Teague
Jeff Teague is coming off a game with 27 points and 11 assists and is capable of putting up big numbers.  Bradley's defense will be key, not just to contain Teague, but also to slow their offense down and keep them from getting into their sets until late in the shot clock.

Game Notes

After their 2 game road trip, the Celtics return home to face a tough Hawks team in a game that has playoff implications.  The last time these two teams met things were weren't going very well for the Celtics.   After losing the game to the Hawks, the Celtics had lost 6 in a row and were 3 games under .500.  But even worse, it was in that game that Rajon Rondo tore his ACL.

Last season, Boston won the series between these two teams 2-1 but all 3 games were close.  The Celtics won by 3 points and by 2 points in overtime while the Hawks won their game by 5.  Every game between these two teams seems to end up being chippy.  There is no love lost between them, that is for sure.   The Celtics won the first meeting this season in Atlanta 89-81 but Atlanta won the second game, also in Atlanta,  123-111.

The Celtics have played well at home and have a 21-9 record at the Garden.  The Hawks are just 15-16 on the road.  Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are on a 4 game win streak while the Hawks are looking to win their second straight.   Atlanta avoided a 4th straight defeat Wednesday night with a 107-96 home win over the 76ers. The Hawks  are in the midst of a tough stretch where they play 10 of 14 on the road.

Every game is important for playoff positioning as they head down the final stretch.  The Celtics are still in the 7th spot, 2.5 games ahead of the Bucks, who are in 8th.  The Hawks are in the 5th spot just one game ahead of the Celtics.  Brooklyn is 4th, 1.5 games in front of the Celtics.  And Chicago is in 6th just half a game ahead of the Celtics.  A win in this game would shake up the standings quite a bit.

Keys to the Game

Defense -  Defense is key to every win.  The Celtics need to play tough team defense.  They have to guard the perimeter as the Hawks have good 3 point shooters like Korver and Teague who can kill a team from out there.   They also have to defend the paint because players like Smith, Horford and Johnson can get to the hoop and score there, especially on tip ins and second chance baskets.

Rebound - The Celtics must make an effort to go after rebounds.  They must box out and prevent tip ins and to prevent the Hawks from getting second chance baskets.  The Hawks are a good rebounding team, but not great.  The Celtics have moved up to 28th in the league and the Hawks are just 25th.  If the Celtics put out effort on the boards as a team, they should be able to win the battle of the boards.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to go after rebounds and loose balls.  They must be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers.  They also have to be aggressive on defense and get stops. When the Celtics are the more aggressive team, they get the benefit of the calls and they also are tough to beat.

Ball Movement
- The Celtics have made up for the loss of Rajon Rondo by moving the ball and advancing the ball with the pass.  Hero ball rarely wins games.  They need to continue to move the ball and play unselfishly and find the open man.  But, in moving the ball, they also have to make careful passes and not turn the ball over.

X-Factor
Home Court and Final Stretch
The Celtics are at home and they have played well there.   They need to get a boost from the home crowd.   They know they are entering the final stretch and they also know that they are fighting for playoff positioning and home court for the first and possibly the second round.  That should give them extra motivation to stay focused and get this win.

I know I don't do well with predictions but, I'm predicting a big game from Paul Pierce, and Courtney Lee, and maybe a DJ White sighting!

must win game.   C's may drop the OKC game.......so they need to win this to keep pressure up on the teams ahead of them in the standings.

I think Jeff Green is again the X factor ,  when he brings his "A" game along with PP and KG, the Celtics are a tuff out.

The last win might give them the confidence to take this one too.

Go Celtics !!!! :)

Avenge Rondo's death and the loss of that 27-point lead. That was the last day we sucked.

Keep the momentum going.

Celtics by 40.

KG, Bass, Wilcox, and Green need to keep Smith and Horford from easy inside buckets (or at least make them really work).

Gonna be at the game tonight! I thought with Rondo gone we'd miss out on a good game, but now this game looks amazing. It's on the list of most important games remaining on the year.

Can't wait to see KG, Pierce, Green, and Bradley

Let's go Celtics!

He made it to the NBA, yes he is good. Is he good enough to stay in the NBA? Who knows. Is he good enough to take minutes from guys ahead of him? Probably not.

I want to see more of DJ White (he looked solid in 4 mins lol) and I'd like to see Shav get some action too, but I trust other guys over them and we have been in all close games as of late so they shouldn't be getting much/any burn unless it's a blowout, if KG needs time off/rest, foul trouble to our best bigs, etc.

Lovely block by Wilcox on Teague's drive.
Argh, then he falls asleep and leaves Horford wide open for a jumper right at the start of the offense.

How the hell do you know Jon? You were playing at that time.

I watched most T'wolves games in that era. KG was the MAIN guy.

If it's the play I'm thinking of, I think Pierce was the one who needed to contest, as Wilcox just came off from taking a layup and was still getting back to defense, but Pierce was in full position to contest there.

They were right next to each other. Wilcox's mistake was not even looking at the play, just ran to the pain. Pierce was looking who knows where while Horford was shooting, both were together, none looking at the ball. But Pierce was in the position to contest.

Point is though, ankle braces are even better at protecting your ankles. What I'm trying to say is that different people like different levels of comfort :)

I've played with, and without, and currently wear shoes that are right in between high and low, without braces (unless I play more than 2 competition games in a week, in which case I'll wear braces on the third+ games.)

Well, not a bad end to the half. Could have been a better lead, but I'm content with it considering our turnover prone offense that has been run for the second half of the quarter.

I was impressed by that Deron Williams thing until I saw they were playing the Wizzards.

Wizards defensive rating ranks 8th in the NBA.

But some guys, like Sully, can't jump great but have great timing to know when. Zack Randolph also.

Hate the refs in the NBA. This time just because they've swallowed their whistles... which is brilliant, if they'd consistently do it. Not just one game in the season.

Oh no doubt, I understand completely why you would give up on them. No reason this game should not be a 3 point lead for Boston instead of an overtime.

I'll tell you this, if Atlanta can pull off this OT win, I will be impressed. Nothing I have seen in this game - including that run - makes me believe they have the stones to do it. But, as you say, if Boston keeps playing with their heads in their shorts, then anything can happen.

Doc did, in fact, come up with a scenario where Atlanta can win though. Park it in Pierce's hands for 10 seconds, then force KG to take a shot he would have the same chance of making blindfolded. Genius.

Josh Smith wants to be a hero.  He can do good things, but he will ultimately clash with Doc Rivers over his "no  hero-ball" philosophy.

Nice, Pierce. DON'T give it to Green open in the post, instead hold the ball, then make KG take a contested 3.
that was what i saw.....internal problems....pp has too big of an ego...won't let the new guys do it...it has to be pp..... ???

I have a feeling that we will be playing atleast one 7 game series in the playoffs. So that may be an advantage if they do play them sooner then later.

6th seed and rising... aside from that tiny hiccup during the stretch where Barbosa went out and we were incorporating Crawford (where we lost 4 games), this team has been brilliant since our 3rd best player partially tore his ACL.

Get ready for a last-second loss, everyone. Way too many turnovers and missed open shots.

I find it very, very hard to imagine a scenario that ends up with Atlanta winning this game.

Quoted for posterity.

You guys just give up too easy. Atlanta is not the dregs of the league, they made a run in a road game. It happens. I still don't believe Boston loses this game. If they do, then I will add being wrong to my sorrow, but I do not have faith they can complete the comeback against the Celtics.

I'm just messin with you.  ;D I do give up too easily sometimes, but these guys are just so frustrating.

Genius.

I'm glad to say that you were right and I was wrong!

Hahaha love it!

THIS is exactly why Terry is so critical.  Terry is one of the most clutch shooters in the league today.  Much like Pierce and Ray, he's the kind of guy who can shoot 1-8 through a game, only to hit the dagger to win it at the end.

It takes a special type of player with an extreme confidence to be able to take  shots like that without hessitation no matter how they have shot for the rest of the game (or week or month or year).

In fact when last season ended the first thing I said (after looking at our last few seasons) was that we needed a guy like Terry on our team - somebody who was a pure leader and deadly scorer off the bench who could hit huge shots come playoff time.  Somebody who could hit that huge basket when KG is resting and Pierce is struggling.

He's been a bit up and down this season but that has never phased me - when you have a guy with the attitude he has who has been as consistent as he has over his entire career, you know he'll always come back around.

Teague hates the C's , he plays like an all star every time they meet .  If Teague played this hard against every team their record would be much better.

Irving is totally awesome . Avery looked a little tired to me.
