According to Hoopsrumors.com
Celtics Sign Shavlik Randolph
March 1 at 8:47am CST By Luke Adams
Shavlik Randolph has received his letter of clearance from China and has signed a 10-day contract with the Celtics, agent Joel Bell tells Shams Charania of RealGM.com. According to Charania, Randolph is participating in the Celtics' morning shootaround today, so it sounds as if the team will announce the signing later today, making Randolph eligible for tonight's game against the Warriors.
Randolph, 29, has been out of the NBA since the 2009/10 season, when he briefly appeared in three games each with the Heat and Trail Blazers. However, as Ryan Raroque of Hoops Rumors noted last night, the former Duke Blue Devil had a tremendous season in the Chinese Basketball Association, averaging 32.0 PPG and 14.6 RPG in 28 games for the Foshan Long Lions.
-
We might as well have a Chinese D-League team affiliate.
-
Interesting, hopefully he can average that here ;)
-
He was terrible at Duke...left early and I was shocked he made the NBA
Highly touted out of high school....his grandfather Ron Shavlik was a legend at NC State in the 50s or early 60s
-
Per youtube highlights he can... umm... be a solid help defender? I mean really, he has very few "highlights"... I don't judge players by them but I'd like to see what he does... anyone have his China highlights or something? Is he a 3 or 4? Sometimes he looked kinda tall in the videos (his summer league clips) then when he played for the cHeat he looked shorter.
Edit: He's 6-10, so a PF.

Paperwork would be too confusing.
Suddenly I'm amused, picturing Danny sitting Fab Melo down and telling he's playing in China for a few weeks. Makes Maine in January seem pretty inviting.
-
Had a horrific ankle injury that derailed his career for a bit.
Those of you clamoring for height, careful what you wish for. I'm guessing the Celts lost out on Amundson.
-
I remember him as a promising backup big man, but then he kind of disappeared from the radars.
Anyone knows what he did over the last couple of years?
-
Predictions? Worse than old friend Shelden?
-
to those that wanted to "blow up" the team - imagine a lineup of TWill, Crawford, DJ White, Shavlik, and Melo running down the court wearing Celtic green and try not to dry heave
it would be tankerific for sure, but... yikes
-
I pray this guy sees the court for little or no time.
-
Why S.Randolph over L.Amundson?
-
Predictions? Worse than old friend Shelden?
Much worse. Shelden gave us a few good games. I don't see Randolph even doing that.
-
Why S.Randolph over L.Amundson?
http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/226430/Bulls-To-Sign-Lou-Amundson-To-10-Day-Contract
All signs point to the Chicago Bulls signing Lou Amundson to a 10-day contract on Saturday.
The signing would bring the Bulls' roster to the maximum 15 players, bringing big-man insurance while Taj Gibson recovers from a sprained MCL in his left knee.
The Bulls have enough money under the hard cap to sign Amundson for the rest of the season.

I get the impression that Amundson chose the Bulls over the C's.

I've seen Shavlik play since he was in high school. UNC/Duke went through an intense recruiting battle and he ultimately chose Duke.
Like a previous poster said, he was very underwhelming at Duke (He was by far the best player in the state of NC, and one of the best in the country, going into school). He was considered one of the biggest recruiting busts ever in College basketball history.
He left school early, which left everyone scratching their heads. Predictably he went undrafted. He just isn't skilled enough to contribute on this level, or even on the College level.
Celtics fans should hope he gets little to no playing time. DJ White will be MUCH more valuable to this team.
Shavlik's biggest claim to fame is his quote from an article about potentially playing with gay players (after Amechi had come out saying he was a homosexual), "as long as you don't bring your gayness on me." ::)
-
To me he's a good low risk pickup on a 10 day. Plus Randolph is bigger than Amundson also.
Amundson saw a bigger short term need with the Bulls with Gibson being injured right now.

After watching that (fastforwarding through a bunch of talk), he might be closer to Jordan than Jackson. 0.0

I find it disturbing that even on this board, where every marginal NBA player is a borderline All-Star once the Celtics sign him, that this entire thread contains virtually nothing positive about this guy. Including his dancing.
-
Shav is yawn-worthy. I'm sort of a Duke fan and he was an enormous disappointment. He was chiffon soft. Anyway, meh to this.
Now, as roster spots go, I'm guessing Danny is hoping Cleveland buys out Casspi, in which case he'd make a play, and if he could do it, I bet he'd drop Williams and sign Casspi. My WAG for the day.

We have no need for Casspi. He'll get zero playing time being the third SF on the roster.

He may be yawn-worty, but he's one of the better rebounders off the scrap heap. He'll help if he's healthy.

If the Cs wanted to use Green some more at PF, and reduce PP's minutes some, he could see some action. He has had some good play in the NBA. We've got four guards in AB, Lee, Jet, and Jordan. I happen to like Williams potential, but a 5th guard is something of a luxury. Casspi is a more proven commodity. I don't regard it as any sort of probability, but I could see Danny making that play.

We'll see. Maybe he's improved a good deal over the years. He knows how to play. He was just very soft in the execution. It's nice that he put up good numbers in few minutes. Beats the alternative. He may or may not beat out White for minutes to even get the chance to help on the boards.

Ya don't say...
-
So out of all the guys we signed on 10 day contracts how many of them do you think sees the floor in meaningful mins? Who do you think we sign for the rest of the season?
-
He can play, I remember being thoroughly impressed with his game when he played for the Sixers a couple years ago. I'm happy with this signing.
-
FWIW Randolph is a better career rebounder in the NBA than Amundson.
-
Midnight tonight is the nba deadline for buyouts?
-
Wanted warrick
-
Wanted whiteside. Oh well Danny knows best?
-
Predictions? Worse than old friend Shelden?
Much worse. Shelden gave us a few good games. I don't see Randolph even doing that.
Sheldon Williams couldn't average 32 and 16 in my nephew's 5ht grade league.
-
FWIW Randolph is a better career rebounder in the NBA than Amundson.
If you're talking about rebounds per minute played, perhaps.
Shavlik's career rebounds: 230.
Amundson's career rebounds: 656.

So I guess my question is whether Randolph will take the 12th seat on the roste or will Melo.
I am guessing that Randolph is better right now than Fab so I guess Randolph suits up and Fab goes back to Portland?
This is based of course on the assumption that DJ White will suit up and actually play.
-
Wanted whiteside. Oh well Danny knows best?
Let's hope so i was also hoping for Hassan Whiteside

Same with White. If each can give a hard 6 minutes a game they will give KG a chance for a little more rest. I'd say it's a long shot, but worth a try.

I don't have any real issue with this signing. We're dumpster diving at this point anyway. I just have a lingering dislike for the guy's game from his Duke days, back when I used to watch a lot more college basketball than I do these days. Was a Duke fan, and I hated his game back then. But whatever. As you say, he's six fouls. Now, when it comes to our 3 10-day guys, the only one that I can see having a future with us is Williams, who I hope we sign to another 10-day.

Shavlik's career rebounds: 230.

You should use a rate-based stat rather than a career counting stat, unless you want to claim that Brandon Bass (2026 career rebounds) is better than both of them.

Haha, sad but true :P

Can we just let Ainge sign his token white guy in peace? Thanks.
-
Ok w/ this signing. One will stick one won't. Was also hoping for Warwick.
-

Most likely, two will stick... maybe all 3. Since Doc plays small ball (loves it), I'm thinking that TWill will have his shot tonight and maybe another 10 day.
-
Its a good signing and only for 10 days if things don't pan out.
Randolph from what i can remember and seen from summer league play is the type of player DA would sign.
He is quick on his feet for a 6'10 guy, has decent length, has good bbiq, rotates on defense, grabs rebounds and takes charges (DA has some infatuation about this quality)
The reason he was suppose to be the next big thing out of high school was his size, quickness and iq. But in college he lacked strength and many said Duke was a bad fit for him. It was a disaster and he didn't get drafted into the nba.
So for the past 5 years or so, not being in the nba, he has added the necessary strength to let his strengths be able to shine now. So i guess we will see what he can do. After Amundson signed with the bulls, DA had to do something and get another big man that can help us out.
So far our PF/C positions look like
Starting - KG, Bass and sometimes Jeff Green
Bench - Wilcox, White, Randolph
In reality i'm hoping for
Starting -Kg, White or Randolph
Bench - Bass, Wilcox
I pray Bass comes off the bench. He has been better , plus the team is better when he comes off the bench

Having more rebounds total doesn't necessarily make you a better rebounder. I don't understand the infatuation with tallying total stats.

Just pointing out that the phrase "better career rebounder" needed clarification/qualification. It didn't sound right to me when I read it.
Broken down by minutes played, it's a virtual tie (although Amundson is actually slightly ahead).
-
Nu-uh is this serious?
-
Nu-uh is this serious?
yeah. What do you expect, suddenly KG has a twin brother who is just as good as KG, signs a 10 day contract??
Lets just hope these guys have tapped into some of their potential and are better than when they left the NBA
-
This guy is worse then Pavlovic. He has no chance of seeing the court. Why would we not get Warrick?
I guess he has no interest in Boston because these guys style of play is very similar except Warrick is vastly more talented.
-
This guy wouldn't even see the light of day.
Unless we have a blow out game.
In which case, I'd rather get Fab in there so he gets some experience.
I like the signing though, its insurance at this point.

Wow, and Shelden was pretty bad, especially in the playoffs when it mattered most. :-\

Well, I mean, you said it yourself. If that were the lineup, we wouldn't be watching the games. We'd be watching college hoops and dreaming of lottery balls.
-
Wanted whiteside. Oh well Danny knows best?
Let's hope so i was also hoping for Hassan Whiteside
Hassan Whiteside is not even half as good as Ryan Hollins.
We already have one completely unskilled 7 footer on the team, and he doesn't see the floor.
-
I'll give him 10 days. I think white will be overall better where as Randolph should help with rebounding i hope based soley off of observation of a few vids.
-
Honestly, if he plays as well as he did those two seasons in Philadelphia he will be a good pickup. He played limited minutes, but put up good rebounding numbers, above average scoring efficiency, almost no turnovers, and decent defense (though a little foul heavy).
That's exactly what we need. A backup big man who can just corral the caroms and occasionally get a bucket, and not be a complete sieve.
-
SR's NBA game highs are 12 pts, 13 rbs, and 5 blks. I think those were all 2006 totals before his bad ankle injury---but those aren't bad! You don't pick up 13 rebs or 5 blks in garbage time! And I don't care what PRO league you're talking, AVERAGING 33 pts and 15 rebs takes some kind of talent! And that was in 36 minutes.
So the guys got some skills, and if can give KG a 5 min blow each half it'll be a great signing--if not, it's only ten days.
-
We might as well have a Chinese D-League team affiliate.
Paperwork would be too confusing.

Portland's finest sends you love!,
-
I despise this guy. I hope he never sees the floor during the 10 days and he's sent on his way.
-
We are really scrapping the bottom of the barrel at least he is a big.
-
I despise this guy. I hope he never sees the floor during the 10 days and he's sent on his way.
hmm why?
i don't have any idead abt him.. can't find any good highlights from this guy on his nba/cbl days..
-
An old Hoopshype player profile on him says:
"A pretty good shot....pretty big...has a mean streak."
There weren't any negatives on the write up.
We could use a banger and a guy that can rebound. He is at the end of the bench. I would keep him around, he may produce way above his pay rate - like a Brian Cardinal type value player.
NBA players are way over paid and if it weren't for the referees and media building up players way beyond they capability, the league would be more fun to watch.
for example, how many people are sick of Wade getting every possible call going his way for free throws?
Look at Curry last night, because he scored alot of points the night before, the league/referees feel a need to build up a "superstar" and give him all the calls (think Bradley's fouls)....on it goes.
I found the Celtics/Phoenix game one of the most enjoyable games to watch in many years because of the new players and the fast breaks and hope for the future. Let's welcome the new players that are trying to play hard and make a difference - without all the fouls going their way.
Let's see what DJ White and Randolph can do. Hopefully Doc will give them a few minutes night...we already know what KG can do...but he has a high mileage engine and if we do not develop some role players in a hurry, we will be one and done in the playoffs.
-
For those clamoring for Warwick, what the heck for? This team needs and infusion of actual size and warrick is not it. Now Randolph may suck, but he is a lot closer to what we need.
-
gosh i love cb.
where else do we have 5 pages on someone like shavlik randolph? :D
-
Well, if he likes to rebound, at 6'10"...he should get it done.....or fab melo playing in CHINA....another odd move.....as doc had PLENTY of time to play the man from Sept-Jan....but did he....no...as he never does with BIGS....playing in the NBA is the only way to be NBA ready....all the other prep is the same....it will only bring you to the same point...in need of NBA time. Fab could have gotten shot blocking, timing, REBOUNDING, CONFIDENCE, time around the MASTER..KG.....and at least a chance to come around, be seen....at least s part of trade bait......doc does this all the time.....collins was better than showed here....he hardly played.....doc has no clue what to do with bigs.....and don't say "what about kg" kg was the man at age 15...not many like that in the world......kg could get dennis rodman to play straight.....maybe....LOL.
-
If he schooled DJ White in China, would be worth seeing what he can do in practice and who knows he may get some playing time if he can pick up the defense quick enough.
Like the T-Will signing. Just because he was not a strong shooter in college does not mean he can't improve. Showed real skills. T-Will stuck maybe one of these guys will as well. Randolph is pretty quick for a big and that is half the battle.
-

Another 6 blocks last night for Whiteside in just 23 minutes. I had no idea Hollins was that good.
