Title: Would you work for the NBA? For the Celtics?
Post by: green tea on February 27, 2013, 05:14:22 PM

I consider myself to be a pretty knowledgeable Celtics/NBA fan.  And yet, I'm floored by the overall knowledge of some of our very own posters (mmmmm, Roy Hobbes come to mind...but there are several others, too).

If the NBA or the Celtics ever came knocking on your door to ask if you wanted to be a full time consultant (in all likelihood for less pay), would you quit your day job to work for them?

Would working for the association take some of the fun out of being a Celtics fan?  Or would it be your dream job?

I could very easily see the talents of some long time posters being parlayed into real NBA jobs.  I'd be very interested to get perspectives from some long time posters....

I think it would be very interesting, and I remember over the summer, some random Brooklyn fan was hired. He was walking down the road and happened to see the Brooklyn Nets' CEO, so he asked for a picture or something. He got hired on the spot. (most people can't recognize a team CEO by their face, or they wouldn't even know their CEO's name)

If I were ever offered, I might take it just for fun, it would be an interesting job. I'm pretty knowledgeable about hte NBA as well, imo, and I could probably name more current NBA players off the top of my head, than most of you (hehehe).

The NBA is something that is very appealing to me, maybe because I'm interested in math. Stats are big in basketball, and I can typically memorize box scores of big games, and individual stats for a handful of players. I'll always know the leading rebounders in the league (or top 5), as well as assisters, blockers, etc. just because I just happen to read so much.

The NBA is probably my biggest hobby by far, and it would be really interesting to work with them as a consultant, but as fans we're totally biased and never know the full image. I think a lot of fans are much more knowledgeable about the NBA than so-called "analysts". The only problem is, a lot of fans on this blog are very biased and can't see the big picture.

But then again, I'm a pretty staunch supporter of Jeff Green.

I would take a job. Yes. [sorry for bragging so much]

I bet it would be fun, especially a gig with the C's.

I'm a Celtics fan, not an NBA fan LOL. But yeah, if I know ALL of the Celtics knowledge, definitely taking this job! Ask me about the Memphis Grizzlies or Milwaukee Bucks...wouldn't know much about them therefore I ain't no NBA fan hahah.

I'd know some rivalry information though (Lakers, Heat, Knicks, etc) so that can help (:

Heck I'd be one of those guys mopping the basketball court or collecting their workout clothes during a Celtics home game hahahah!

I certainly would.

I know a lot about the Celtics and the NBA in general, so it would be a pretty sweet gig.

My dream would to be like an only basketball Ahmad Rashad, where I get to interview all kinds of ball players and sit down for an hour and just talk.  I think that would be awesome.

I am pretty much in the same boat as this, although, I would love to do a podcast, or radio, or something along those lines.  I am a huge fan of the league, and have been for nearly 2 decades.

Dude. You're way too overconfident. Memorizing a ton of stats means nothing. Are you living in the Stone Age? Even an idiot could look things up through databases or the Internet. That's not even what they do. You need to know way more to have a chance at a gig.

And plus, you totally suck at money management. I mean, look at your Pick Two Grizzlies team. Probably a perennial lottery team. I highly doubt you meet any of the requirements an NBA team would have.

Just stick to what you can do, kid. There's no way an NBA team would ever hire you.

But I'll TP you out of pity, anyways.

;D If I got to pick an NBA job, I'd be a player!

I think this is what would doom a lot of us.  We'd see everything with green tinted lenses.  ;D

I think very logical thinkers (I'll use Roy as an example again) could easily parlay their knowledge of the CBA, legal issues, and broad knowledge of the game into something...maybe turn it into a scouting or agent-type gig.

I agree with another poster that many of the posters here DO in fact know much more than the so called "experts".  The only problem is that we're not as marketable for TV.  Nonetheless, some people could probably be very good behind-the-scenes types of workers....

I'd like to work abroad for the Celtics as a scout.  Brazil, Italy, Spain or Portugal as base but travel around when necessary.  Ready for China too....

I'd mop the floors of the garden, and be pretty [dang] happy.

I'd be a scout too. That job would be so much fun. Traveling around the world and just watching basketball.

I'd love to be an assistant too or someone who gets to interact with the players, like equipment guy or something.

Or if nothing is available, I'd be a ball boy.

Depends in what capacity but I def could see it tainting the enjoyment a bit in some roles.

Ive also heard some pretty bad things about the C's players from a friend who works in the organization and I feel like that would def taint it a lot.

I guess its kind of sad but too much transparency could get ugly.

Sometimes I think interviewing them or stuff like that would be cool but in reality I doubt anyone of them care or feel like answering your questions they are just obligated to

Sure. We all love the game as fans, but any fan who hasn't come to terms with the business side of the league would be a poor team employee and fan both
