Became a fan after they lost? Reggie Lewis died that yearrrrrrrrrr

I became a C's fan probably around 1983 (I was eight years-old), and I guess my first memory is watching the C's on CBS with Dick Stockton and Tommy Heinsohn. I of course became a huge Bird fan almost immediately and the rest is history as they say.
-
Actually that's interesting since mine also was during a sad moment.

Larry Bird around 1983 or so. I don't recall what game it was.
-
First game of basketball I ever saw on tv, first game of basketball other than a HS game at all. It was a Sunday afternoon sometime in early January 1958. I think the Celtics beat the Knicks, and I was a fan for life. Oh, and I was 6. My dad was rooting for the Knicks, so I had to root for the Celtics.

2008 game 6 ;D
-
My first Celtics game was Michael Jordan's last game at the garden. I was only a kid at the time, but that's when I really fell in love with basketball, and the Celtics!
-
Watching the 86 Finals against Houston with my best friend and his older brother...watched the whole series and fell in love with Bird and the C's...
-
2002 Playoffs
I fondly remember the Game 5 massacre against Philly and the 4th quarter comeback against the Nets... I have also been a Paul Pierce fan ever since! ;D
-
I have no idea what game it was as I was young but it was early in Pierces career. He hit an important three and I remember my dad going crazy, lol.
-
The 1980-81 season. My favorite player on that championship team was Nate "Tiny" Archibald.
-
Though I definitely watched some games before this, no one can ever question me being a fan because my first game was this disaster. It was love at first sight.
http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=170420002
The ACTUAL attendance that day wasn't even close to that. There might have been 8,000 people and even that is generous. Also, check out the referees for that game. Maybe the Raptors were supposed to win big? :o

Buffalo vs Celtics, first game of season in 1973. I remember as a kid being blown away by watching a few players named Cowens, Havilicek and Silas and watching them beat some noob named McAdoo
Funny note on this is that I won a $100 bet years later in a bar with friend who swore and was positive their was never a team in Buffalo. That was an easy bet to win for me that night.

As a young adolescent in the early 90's, those awesome 'FaniMation' basketball cards had a big influence on me becoming a Celtics fan

My first enduring memory is being at the 1981 championship parade, and the famous "Moses eats #?%#" chant and followup line by Larry.

2002 ECF Game 3 against the Nets. Pierce nineteen point outburst was just amazing.
-
My first memories of intense C's fandom was after the Russell dynasty and at the start of the Hondo/JoJo/Cowens era. Around 1970.
My best childhood C's memory was actually as a senior in HS in 1976 listening to the C's-Suns triple OT game in my car with my HS friends. For some reason we left whoever's house we were at in the 4th to get pizza, figuring we'd listen to Johnny the rest of the game. We ended up sitting in the car outside the pizza place listening to all 3 OTs. Can't remember if we ever got pizza.

I was there too, and that was an all time classic moment.
My earliest distinct memory is also listening to the triple OT game on the radio in my parent's bedroom. My Dad was at the game and it was wayyyyyy past my bedtime, but there was no way I was going to sleep without knowing the result.
I have vague memories of some games before then (I think I even went to a few, but that's definitely the first distinct memory).

I was but a wee lad sitt n on my daddy's knee watch n Dave Cowans punishing the Bucks. Daddy had beer in one hand , other on my shoulder ......say n see boy , thats how a man plays basketball. ;)

I went to a Braves game as a young kid too. I remember being impressed with Randy Smith.

I became a fan after Pierce got attackted at that nightclub
-
I started very young as a Celtic fan, but my first vivid memory is Bird falling and hitting his head in the playoffs vs the pacers only to come back and torture chuck person...

my first post since getting disgusted with too many "fans" posting negatives on here
tp to all the older fans!
buffalo braves and no one mentions ernie D
my first memory is the season of '76 as both my parents loved the celtics, my first celtics' guys were 2 players who weren't the biggest or best at their posistions but outworked everyone hondo and cowens
was lucky enough to see that cowens intensity with hondo work ethic be morphed in larry birds rookie season
thanks, back to lurking

I had a bit of an obsession...i was 10 when Bird retired and I have 256 Larry Bird cards with no doubles...
the one I have always wanted but never got my hands on is his rookie card...

true fans root for championships even when their team misses the playoffs! ;D lurkers ftw!

KG coming out for the first time wearing a Celtics jersey.
-
I remember being intrigued when Bird hit his head on the floor, left and then came back thinking that one tough SOB. But at the time I was a Bulls fan, mostly because it was the cool thing and because of Jordan and Pippen.
But then after '96 I graduated highshcool and a friend of mine started to have me over to watch games after mens league. Then it started to become a couple times a week, to when I didn't show up at pre game, he'd call and ask if i was coming over.
I remember Tommy and "I Love Walta!"
But PP's come back against the Nets was the first legit game I could remember, my friend had left to sell some one his car because they were loosing so bad, and when he got back he was sooo mad he missed it. Didn't believe me at first when i said they won.
First game I saw we were 7 rows up behind the basket and I could see PP shake his head at who ever was guarding him, he made his move disappeared behind the post and next time I saw him he was finishing a loud dunk. That was awesome.

same for me i would say 1983 was correct. i was 13. yep. tommy was great on CBS.

October 31, 1997. I was 9 years old at the time. The Celtics beat Michael Jordan and the defending champion Chicago Bulls to kick off the Rick Pitino Era. Antoine Walker had a huge game, outscoring MJ 31-30. Antoine even busted out the "Walker Wiggle".
-
My first memory of being a fan was watching Dana Barros, Dee Brown, Rick Fox, Dino Raja, David Wesley, and even some Kevin McHale at the very end of his career. The first actual games I remember watching were of the 1995 playoff series against the Orlando Magic. My first great memory of the team was when they beat the Bulls the very first game of the year in either 1996 or 1997.
-
Unless you are a young fan if you became a fan when they got Ray and KG then you aren't a true die hard that suffered through the lean years like true fans did.

Tommy point. I think you are the first one on here who claims to have become a fan during the mid-nineties.
You definitely deserved 2008 for that.
Edit: Sorry, PRIDE, missed your post at first. One for you, as well.

1947 vs Toronto Huskies
-
early 1960s....i would sit in my room, listening to johnny most announce games over the radio.
i still can hear him calling play by play.... "jonjon with the ball. top of the key. bang!"
god i loved listening to him. he was great.
-
Watching Ron Mercer as a 5 year old, that's weird right?

I am unfortunately there but I had no interest in Boston sports until the 2007-08 Celts. I watched the Pat's and Sox dominate but it didn't do anything for me. I do follow the Pat's now to shorten by sports drought by a few months. But I was I could say I watched the old C's.

I do not remember Kuberski or Finkel perhaps I started watching in seventy four. I remember the rest of the Roster and Ernie D. was a local guy for Buffalo. Did Chaney later coach the team for a while? I have trouble remembering the coaches before Bill Fitch.
-
Been a casual fan since Antoine's rookie year. Became a doe hard during the 2001-2002 playoff run. That game 3 comeback against the Nets... O man. Probably one of the best celtics memory I have.
-

Overgeneralization showing it's bad side.
-
1987 Finals. Heck of a time to start rooting for them since I only had to wait another 21 years to see them redeem themselves :P
-
I watched the Celtics in the mid to late 90's but luckily I fon't remember any of it. When I became a die hard fan? That 2002 team that made that run in the playoffs - I loved that team, second only to the 2008 team. Watched almost every game since. I even enjoyed watching us sucking in the mid 2000's in hopes of some of our young players becoming stars.
-
TP for the thread.
I think my first memory of being a C's fan was them winning it all in 81....my first "vivid" memory of them, though, was the little Sixers rivalry they had going on the the early 80s..Dr. J and Larry locked in a choke hold:
They even made a video game for those two...for the Atari, I believe:

Listening with my Dad and Grampa to the radio to the game six Championship win over the Lakers in 1963, and seeing this the next day:

... my very first Celtic memory, or sports of any kind, for that matter. No details at all, but I knew it was a big deal, and I remember being happy to see my Dad happy.

Similar, but a little earlier...listening to Johnny Most call games on the car radio in the late 50's. Later seeing broken clips on the news on a black and white tv.

I became a fan after 2k4, where pierce was my fave player. My older brother then got me into the actual league.
-
Well i know i was a fan for a few years before this, but i was too young to hold onto any precise moment in time until milt palacio's buzzer beater in 2000. Probably one of the most improbable/absurd buzzer beaters of all time. ;D
-
Watching a game on TV confused why it was so important. Larry Bird's last game.
Potapenko, Montross, and Dee Brown playing cards soon to follow.

Got to meet and learn from Dee Brown and the Chief at a basketball camp in Mass in '91 or '92, and still have both Upper Deck card and photo they signed for me, (Dee's card sitting on stanchion after dunk contest, the Chief in-game) ... I remember being amazed that when I shook their hands, Dee's was almost as big as Robert's! (Also asked Dee's gf out during a demonstration, not knowing who she was, but that's another story). ;)

Great thread. TP's all around.
My first memory of the Celtics were the 1985 Finals. Back then, they didn't broadcast NBA games in Spain, so it was a report on TV of how the Fakers won in the Garden. As strange as it may sound for younger fans, we didn't have the Internet, so all info I got was from newspapers and the occasional TV report. Although the Fakers won in 6, I became a Celtic fan, and the next year I wanted them to crush the Fakers, but the Flakers just were too afraid to fight the Rockets, and you know.
Then the 1986 Draft came... and the McHale foot, and Bird's back, Reggie's death... and then Pitino. Through all those tragedies, always thought the Celtics are the best club even when they've had terrible teams. The Internet has made it easier to be a fan, so I've become a more die hard one.
The beauty of the Celtics is that you don't choose them, like they say, but you get caught in their charm even in their least brilliant moments. Reading the thread it's amazing how many of us became fans in losing times.
Go Celtics!!
-
I have been a fan since Antoine Walker played for the C's. I guees that's my first memory.
But my first memorable moment would probably be Game 3 of the ECF against New Jersey when the Walker and Pierce led Celtics we're down by as much as 29 points and muscled, clawed, and fought their way back like a proud bunch.
I remember this clearly because I was the only one in the house rooting for the C's while my friends (we have cable, my friends don't) who are watching along with us is calling it pretty much over. I looked at them and told them off. That was one heck of a performance (outside of Tony Delk taking shots he should not take), one heck of a 4th quarter.
Sadly, it wasn't enough as they lost in 6. But that Game 3 really was the first most memorable moment.

May 1988, 12 years young. Celts-Hawks, NBA Playoffs, second round. At that time, I had access to only three channels at home. We were on our annual school trip (where you stay at different lodgings and combine school work with field trips and "sightseeing".) They had cable TV in the rooms and we happened to catch one of the games in the series. I fell in love with Larry Bird.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/BOS/1988_games.html
Scroll for BOS-ATL box scores
The following years I didn't watch a lot of games except when friends would tape an occasional game and lend me the VHS or we would watch a game at a friend's. I would also buy copies of USA Today to get the box scores and the standings. And finally, after three or four years, I had access to regular NBA games through cable we got installed at home. Then followed computers and well... Here I am.
