Boston Celtics (29-26) at Portland Trailblazers (25-30)
Sunday, February 24, 2013
9:00 PM ET
Regular Season Game #56,  Road Game #27
TV:  CSNNE, KGW, NBA-LP 760
Radio:  WEEI, KXTG
Rose Garden

Throughout sports today, nearly every stadium or arena’s name has been sold to a corporate sponsor. In the NBA there are only a few arenas that are not like this, including the Portland Trailblazers home, the Rose Garden.  Unlike most other teams in the NBA, the naming rights to the Trailblazers new home was not sold. The team decided to name the arena after Portland as it is known as the Rose City and used the word, garden, because the word was often used as part of old arenas’ names. The Portland Trailblazers played their first game at the Rose Garden on November 3, 1995 against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Game Notes
The Celtics make their only trip to the Rose Garden this season for the 4th game of their 5 game road trip.  This is the first of back to back games with the second in Utah on Monday.   The Celtics won the first game in the series at TD Garden 96-78.   The Celtics won the only meeting between these two teams last year, 104-86 at TD Garden.

The Celtics have won 6 in a row and 13 of the last 14 games from the Blazers. The 6 game win streak is the longest active losing streak against any opponent for the Blazers.  The Celtics are the only team in the league to have a winning record in the Rose Garden (27-24).   Portland is a pretty good home team with a 17-9 record.  The Celtics have struggled on the road with a 9-17 record and won their first road game against the Western Conference on Friday against the Suns.

The Blazers are 2-8 in their last 10 games and the Celtics are 7-3 in their last 10.  The Celtics are looking for their second straight win on this road trip while the Blazers are stuck in a 7 game losing streak that they would love to break out of.  The Celtics should get a win in this game if they play aggressively and stay focused.  They also will need another solid effort from the new guys.

Key Matchups
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4750.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/5012.jpg)
Avery Bradley  vs Damian Lillard
Lillard has been playing very well and is averaging 18.4 points, 6.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game.   It will be up to Avery to slow him down.
(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3959.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4130.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs LaMarcus Aldridge
The Blazers are playing the 6'11" Aldridge at the 4 and the 6'9" Hickson at the 5.  I expect Doc to put KG on the bigger Aldridge, who is averaging 20.8 points and 8.7 rebounds a game. Stopping Aldridge will be key.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The biggest key to every game is defense. This is even more important on the road where the opponents get a boost from their fans and the Celtics will need to clamp down even tighter on defense.   The Celtics must make defense their number 1 priority

Rebound - The Celtics are shorthanded in the middle, even with KG back.  They have to make an extra effort to rebound as a team.  When the Celtics put out the effort to out-rebound their opponents it usually results in a win.  When they don't make the effort to rebound, it affects the effort in the other areas as well.

Be Aggressive -  The Celtics need to be the more aggressive team.  They were aggressive in going to the hoop against the Suns and they need to continue that in this game.  They also have to be more aggressive on the boards, going for loose balls and on defense.

X-Factors

Effort and Focus
The Celtics are on the road and in order to win they need to be focused and put forth a solid effort from the opening tap to the final buzzer.  On the road they can't afford to coast or put out less than 100% effort.

They're bench is pathetic, thus their starting five plays a TON of minutes, tiring them out.

As for the game, Boston needs to not only build a lead, but keep it, too.  This season, Portland has shown time and again that no lead is safe at the Rose Garden.

nah, I think Jeff should be K.G.'s early sub going forward & Bass will then slide to the 5. Green = more minutes

Boston should win.

They difference defensively between the two sides is a lot larger than the difference offensively.

Well, when it's a blowout (we're up 80-50), Leonard vs. Melo will be fun (both foul out within 3 minutes)

How Portland is not a better team keeps eluding me, must be the horrible bench, but even then...

That bench is horrific. Then again when we had everyone healthy our super bench was getting outplayed by the Clips bench.

Earlier in the season, their bench was averaging 4ppg LOL. I think when they played some team they were outscored 60-4 in bench points.  :-[ :-X

If Portland was playing any other team, I'd root for them ;D

We need to win this one badly to salvage this road trip. I really don't see this team team going into Utah and winning on monday night. Im curious to see what kind of minutes Doc is going to give Green, as well as how Williams and Crawford fit in with KG.

If we can win tonight, we can win in Utah. Blazers and Jazz are playing at about the same level and both get a huge advantage at home. Winning tonight would be great.

We're not playing the Suns... Blazers would actually be a legit 7th-8th seed team if their bench was at least respectable! To me they are the slight favorites given how we play on the road this season...

Anyone know why KG, after sitting out a game, had to rest after playing a **** 4.5 minutes?  Not only that, but it was so important to get KG rest that he had to call a timeout?  I swear, Doc is more focused on resting KG, on seeming wise about how he uses KG than coaching the freaking game.  Doc is one of the opposition's biggest weapons.

Doc is one of the opposition's biggest weapons.

whether KG has a day off or not.. he's always on a 5min rule unless the game is close at the end...

Why is Doc so content on playing from behind?  When you play for the second and fourth quarters with the substitution patterns, you're going to play from behind a lot.  It makes no sense.  He dilutes the starting and bench lineups with the mismatches HE creates for the opposition.

There is a pretty decent chance that if KG played until the 3 minute mark like the similarly ancient Tim Duncan does every game, that the Celtics either have the lead or trail by a small margin.  Then allow the subs to mix in while the opposition does the same.  No one coaches like Doc for a very good reason.

What the heck was T Will doing out there?  He made a great impression against Phoenix as a passer first.  That's his great strength. He's a very erratic shooter.  I don't know why he entered the game and gunned away.  He has no one to blame for getting only a few minutes.  I doubt he gets in the game again.  His chances of sticking after ten days have dropped dramatically after this performance.

To everyone that says Refs cant influence the game. This game is a good example of that.
Celtics off to a good start, and then got called for cheap fouls, and now they are struggling to make a basket.
Momentum is a big part of the game.

Hope we turn this around.

I'd appreciate if Bradley tried to get to the line a little more.  He's got the athleticism to go to the rim, but settles for the mid range jumper instead.

So Garnett played about 10 minutes of the second after playing just 4.5 minutes of the first?  I don't understand it.  You can't just unevenly emphasize one quarter over another.  What was especially dumb about Doc's early sub of KG was that Pierce was in foul trouble.  Obviously KG can go longer than 5 minutes.  Doc is comfortable doing that.  How about keeping KG out there when Pierce had to sit early?  Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.

Over the past two seasons, the Celtics have gone from a team that was strong in the first quarters for over 4 years to an average one last year and a terrible one this year.  It's because of how he uses KG.  KG plays the same amount of minutes but the matchups are screwy.

For the life of me, I don't understand why Bass plays so much.  The guy would not start for almost any other team in the league and he plays 30 plus minutes here.  Defensive miscues, spacing mistakes, missed shots, what have you, the guy is left out there to stink it up.  I hate Doc so much.  What an awful, awful coach.  I don't get him.

Quote
The nickname Rip City is usually used in the context of the city's NBA team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The term was coined by the team's play-by-play announcer Bill Schonely during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on February 18, 1971, the Blazers' first season.

In the days prior to the three-point field goal, Blazers' guard Jim Barnett took an ill-advised long distance shot that nonetheless went in, giving the new team hope for a victory against the powerful Lakers. Excited, Schonely exclaimed "Rip City! All right!" Schonely admits that he has no idea how he came up with the expression, but it became synonymous with the team and the city of Portland.

That's why you don't look at stats to judge a game. He isn't having a good game but he isn't playing terrible. Missed a couple of finishes with balls that didn't stay down. This is more about bass being horrible than it is about green being great.

Agreed Bradley did a very good job on Lillard overall, just made a bad play late in the game on that pick and roll. No reason to fight over it that far from the hoop. Help should have still been there though.

Liliard split the defense and got to the hoop or created an open shot off his penetration on many key plays down the stretch when Bradley was on him. Not to mention the key rebounds he came up with.

Lilliard owned Bradley tonight.

Lillard was 5/16 shooting at .31% from the field. He was 0-5 on his threes. He played 38 minutes.

Meanwhile Bradley was steady and didn't commit a turnover. 4/9 shooting, 8 points, rather modest. Bradley, however, was not the one being owned.

Doc's post game comment will be:
"It's a hit and miss game... we missed a lot of shots that we normally made"...

this is the story of our season...
our shooters are not playing like shooters..

Good thing the same is happening to Knicks and Bulls

I don't watch the stats, I watch the game, and when the game was on the line Lillard broke down our defense repeatedly.

Lilliard owned Bradley tonight.

Lillard was 5-16

so no.

Liliard split the defense and got to the hoop or created an open shot off his penetration on many key plays down the stretch when Bradley was on him. Not to mention the key rebounds he came up with.

One play doesn't tell the whole story, given that play was one of the most important of the game, but overall Lillard did not OWN Bradley.

You just want to put the blame on someone.

Blazers got some serious home cooking tonight with the refs. This game seems like robbery. The tech on Doc, Bradley knocking the ball off Hickson and Blazers getting the ball, Pierce driving and not getting calls, Garnett and the "holding" call at the end.

When you are made to feel like you can do no wrong, it builds your confidence to jack up step back threes - and make them.

He's right though. Its very blunt and matter of fact but if the Blazers didn't hit their three's, we win the game.

The bench was 7-26 tonight 0 assists. Green has got to able to make others better for him to take the next step.

It was multiple plays. I thought Bradley was supposed to stop the opposing guards from doing this to us now that Rondo is out and is not reaching for steals and playing matadore defense.

That was in the pick and roll and the help screwed up not Bradley, Bradley did a very good job. Twice no help came and gave up lanes to the cup.

If anyone got "owned" it was whoever was guarding Matthews. Kid was red hot.

And its the same thing with Rondo, blaming him for "not keeping a guy inbetween his knees" when you can see him getting hit with a pick to free up his man.

It's easy to point fingers isn't it?

That play was a pick and roll, and nobody stepped up when Bradley got picked.

We lost this game in the 1st quarter, allowing them to shoot +60% and we shot 38% in the first half.

If we had just a little more from the bench we would have had enough to squeak out a win on road against a Western Conference team.

Before this 5 game road trip started we were 8-15 (35% win percentage) on the road.

If we can some how get this win against Utah we will have gone 2-3 (40% winning percentage).

It's not great, but not that awful either.

What would have been the worst is if we continued our O-fer streak against Western Conference teams on the road.

yep, that's the point I'm trying to make. You can't blame our poor defensive stretches on Rondo, and Bradley is not some defensive savior. It's our team defense that wins or loses games, but fans around here are too quick and adamant to blame it on Rondo or give the credit to Bradley. Of course Bradley didn't get owned tonight, just wanted to make a point.
