Title: Could DA convince KG and PP to retire?
Post by: kgainez on February 21, 2013, 10:13:38 AM
So of course, there's sentimental value about KG and PP. But looking at our road record and our '0 for' record against the West, a title doesn't seem possible at all.

So instead of trading them and potentially making your organization hated/a joke...do you think DA could convince them to retire in the offseason so we can go into full rebuild mode?

I think as a GM and the owners as well have to be concerned about tarnishing the great name of the Celtics organization. DA has to worry about his reputation as well...no one will want to play for him if he deals away the heart of the Celtics regardless of reason.

I'm starting to think it's time. After seeing PP struggle to get 10 points in the second half, looking at KG lose his touch for free throws, it's just getting bad.

So for those of you pro-rebuild now, what do you think?
And those of you not, how much longer can we hold on to KG and PP?

No.  When those players are ready to retire, they retire.

Do not be the team or guy that pressed two hall of famers out of the game.

No, and especially no for Pierce--who as it stands the C's would have to $5M to have him not play (for them) next year.

I don't know about convince, but he could nudge them into retirement by paying Pierce his $5m option this summer to make the last year of his contract disappear.  That could cause both them to retire.

I've always felt that KG was going to play two more years when he signed his deal last summer.  The scheme was to pay him max money, but spread it over three years so that the Cs would have room to pay Allen too as well as others.  That way, KG and PP would go out together when Pierce's contract ended in the summer of 2014 and KG retired from the last year of his deal.

I mean...what's the point in keeping them? Rondo's return?
And then they're another year older.
PP has had (inconsistently) poor stretches. KG is doing pretty well but he just is looking different out there.

They seem to be getting tired quicker.
You don't think if DA put it to them in a way that puts organization first, how not? You know they've been thinking about retirement. Why not give that extra push?

I feel like everyone who's saying no are also the people who think we can win it all lol
so my question to you is why?

What good would that do? We would still have $42 million on the books. ::)

You are better off trading them to rebuild, than you would have some assets, instead you want to go into lottery hell for years?

have you SEEN the proposals for Paul Pierce alone? LOL!
I'm saying for sentimental value. Is it really $42, tho?

Could he?  Maybe.  Would he?  No.  The C's would not benefit in the slightest from those guys retiring this offseason.  They would just be losing two high impact players, and two valuable assets.

I would not do that Nets deal.

Would you continue to drive your 1980 Dodge Dart for sentimental reasons, or upgrade to a 2002 Ford?

DA's pot of gold is gone, he should retire and take Doc with him.

If my 1980 Dodge Dart has gotten me everywhere I wanted to go, held up this long, and is still reliable, I'd keep it over upgrading to a 2002 Ford that won't do much more for me anyway.

If you'd offer me a Masarati or Lamborghini or Ferrari, that's a different story. That 2002 Ford is not going to impress anybody.

I think a trade to the Bobcats would convince Pierce lol.

He's not going to talk them out of playing just to clear cap space. He could certainly setup a situation where they don't want to play for the C's.
