Game Notes
The Celtics and Lakers square off for the final time this season, this time at the Staples Center.  In their first meeting, the Celtics came out on top 116-95 in spite of having played the night before in Toronto and getting in at 3 am after going through customs and traveling back to Boston.

The Celtics are once again playing in back to back games, this time after playing another tough game the night before in Denver.   The Lakers have been off since before the All Star break and should either be well rested or rusty.  Hopefully, the latter.

The Celtics have dropped to 8-16 on the road while the Lakers are 16-11 at home.  The Celtics are 8-2 in their last 10 games while the Lakers are 6-4 in their last 10.  The Celtics are looking to start a new winning streak after the loss last night in Denver and the Lakers are also looking for a win after losing their final game before the break.

Although the luster may have come off the rivalry between these two teams considering their struggles this season,  it is still Celtics vs Lakers and that's always a game that the Celtics circle on their calendars.

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/CLeeBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/lala/KobeMVP.jpg)
Courtney Lee vs Kobe Bryant
Kobe has had some problems with his elbow, but that won't stop him from playing and from putting up big numbers.  Against the Nets on Tuesday, Kobe finished with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.  He had to shoot 24 shots though to get 21 points.  One thing is for certain,  Kobe will keep shooting, whether he is hitting or not.  CLee has to harass him enough to make him miss more than he makes.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg) vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/lala/HowardLAL.jpg)

Honorable Mention

Avery Bradley vs Steve Nash
Steve Nash can score  and can set up his teammates, but he has never been known for his speed or his defense.  With Avery's speed, he should be able to beat Nash and get to the hoop.  He should also be able to keep Nash from putting up big numbers.

Keys to the Game
Rebound -  Rebounding is key to getting a win.   A big reason for this is that much of rebounding is effort and desire and the team that wants it most goes harder after the rebounds and the team that wants it more wins the game.

Defense -  Defense is the key to winning this game and to winning Banner 18.   The Celtics have been winning with their defense and they need to continue that tough lock down defense, especially in this game if they want to get the win.   They have to defend both the perimeter and the paint as the Lakers are capable of hitting the long ball as well as getting to the hoop to score.

Push the Ball - The Celtics have found success in pushing the ball up the court quickly before the defense can get set.  They need to continue to do this and to advance the ball with the pass rather than walking it up.  Ball movement will be key.

Hustle and Effort -  The Celtics must come out with energy and go after every loose ball and every rebound.  They have to be the team that wants it more if they want to win this game.  The Lakers will be motivated to avenge the loss in Boston and the Celtics have to match their intensity.   The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.

X-Factors
Fatigue and the Road
The Celtics are playing in back to back games once again.  They were able to overcome the fatigue of back to back games in Boston but that was at home.  This time they are on the road and played a tough game the night before.  Hopefully they will have enough in the tank to pull this one out.

I hope Pierce finds his shot today.
If not, he needs to pass the ball to green.

Terrence Williams could be useful defensively today against Kobe Bryant.

As a result, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some playing time.

For some reason I have a bad feeling about this game, particularly considering the embarrasment we gave them in last game. The saving grace for me is that Kobe was supernova in that game, and we still killed them.

We got lucky to survive early on with the horrible job the refs were doing, putting our players in foul trouble very quickly.

That said, Pierce was supernova himself... chances are it may not happen again, though playing in LA seems to bring out the best of Pierce at times.

Why does Bass keep posting up?  And why do they feed him the ball there?  It sucks balls that Bass gets so many extended minutes in the first quarter when he's basically a zero on the court.

Jason Collins really killing our spacing out there, Dwight roaming too much defensively. Put Wilcox in, he can guard Dwight.

In your dreams or his?

Wilcox has had good success guarding him. This is not a hypothetical, it's already been evidenced.

I don't think it's fixed, but seeing the tribute along with Magic break down and Kobe looking like he wanted to cry I had a feeling this would be a different game than the last one.

I don't know how they're gonna get it, but this team cannot go far without another big man.

This isn't the Heat/Thunder/Spurs guys.

This is the 2013 Lakers.

A 15 point lead in the early second quarter is absolutely nothing.  Howard will miss fifty late game free throws and we have more than enough scoring to make up the difference.

btw way off topic but harden had 46 pts on 14-19 shooting tonight? woww...
I mean, I am excited for Greens future with this team, but imagine if we had gotten Harden instead of Green.

Imagine last years team with Harden instead of Green.  Imagine that 2011 roster with him.

Those 8 minute stretches without scoring?  Doesn't happen with Harden.  Green was still readjusting that first year and last year obviously didn't play.   Harden would have been huge.  We beat the Heat last year and likely the Thunder with Harden.

Ughhhhh.

Credit 1 to Doc and Ainge though.  They wanted Harden way before he became a house hold name.

Wilcox has to help Avery on those screens!

Not much one can do with Howard rolling to the basket. Avery has to do a better job fighting through it.

Knowing doc i bet he will get to play in his 10th game before he gets let go

The whole team is tired and we need another man to provide min on the court.

In case you haven't been paying attention recently... Pierce has been shooting like crap, but since Rondo went down he's averaged 16.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists and Boston is 8-2.

It's why I've been saying for the past two years in the face of all the Rondo hype that our best two players were STILL #1 - KG and #2 - Pierce.  Nothing has changed.  Pierce is still the 2nd best player on this team and easily our best offensive player.

Seriously?

He was playing in China for a reason.  If you're expecting even a Brandon Bass calibre role player, you need to bring your expectations WAYYYY down.

He is an end of the bench player who you play in garbage minutes or if foul trouble forces you to play him.  Nothing more.  Don't be naive.

Brandon Bass is that guy that you play pick up basketball with who you never want to pass to because you will never see it again. It amazes me how an NBA player can get away with his style of play.

If it's literally unwatchable how do you know it's literally unwatchable? You must be watching it otherwise you couldn't know?

I think we need to put a bigger body on kobe.  Doc please put JGreen on Kobe or put PP on him.  Kobe doesn't have knock out quickness anymore, JG can stay with him.

If we don't adjust our D we are going to lose by 30.  It is making mismatches all over the court.  Someone has to help CLee because Kobe is just backing him in.  Whoever comes to help on kobe, that guy or the next rotation guy is wide open.

Bad scheme on the lakers tonight.  Minimize AB and Lee, or AB and Jet at the same time.

Time to get Bass out of here. Teams are realizing they can just stick a smaller player on him and shut him down. He has no post moves so he can't make them pay on the switch and he has hands of stone so he can't be a factor on the boards when teams stick a guard on him.

BTW that timeout was about six points too late.

If we don't do something soon I'm going to bed.

It's good to get your best players involved (Pierce/KG) but you don't want to completely ignore every other player on the team (like Kobe loves to do).

Bradley seems to refuse to take a shot because he wants to get it to Pierce.

Until Bradley feels comfortable making his own shot (which he is capable of) he will never be more than a decent role player

I really like what I see as Bradley as the PG.  Defense is good, though not typical Bradley good.  His handle has seemingly improved (not saying a lot) and he's doing a decent job initiating the offense.

Obviously not Rondo orchestrator or anything, but potential is there.

We need him to be more aggressive on offense, not just defense.

To state the obvious, this game is over.

Yes, the worst D we have seen in a number of games.  Our matchups didn't help us any.  Why we don't play PP or JG on Kobe from the start, I have no idea.  He is too big, strong for Clee and especially AB.

Where is TWill?  At least give the guy with fresh legs a chance at playing some D.

No, this team is supposed to be the equivalent of a viking longboat, laden with weapons and trophies from raiding, set out adrift to sea bearing the fresh corpse of a fallen warrior, only to be set ablaze at the last instant before it floats out of range of a flaming arrow from a tearful onlooker's longbow.

Our starting frontcourt is Bass and 36 year old KG, backed up by Collins... and we're suppose to beat the Heat in 7?

in all honesty it makes what we accomplished last year one of our best seasons ever. we outplayed that team in 4 straight. if we do not get screwed by the refs in game 2 we win the series in 6. chew on that. however this year? i agree. even though we have AB and green and wilcox(who is terrible)and JET and not a hurt PP and RA i do not expect us to do any better.

Well, we're also missing the MVP/best player of that series, so...

Well, between Terry and Lee I expected them to each add something to the mix that wasn't there before with just Allen, and for them combined to be better.

Unfortunately it was a disaster out of the gate and Lee has gotten considerably better but Terry has stayed pretty much the same . . . mediocre and streaky.

Like the aggressiveness from Terry. Williams looks afraid to shoot but he is moving the ball well.

There is no way this is a championship team even if we miraculously come back and win. Too bad no one is offering a good package for KG and Pierce, because this team isn't going anywhere this year.

On that note this is over and I'm going to bed.
