Title: Welcome Terrence Williams!
Post by: CelticConcourse on February 18, 2013, 01:05:49 PM
For a 10-day deal.

gary washburn ‏@GwashNBAGlobe
Terrence Williams signing is a done deal according to #celtics source

I'm very hyped about this kid. I'm thinking about using my 1.15 on him!

Great signing imo. He's extremely talented, and still young. Can play multiple positions, very athletic. He was a knucklehead, but playing in China should help correct that. Doc will help too.

I hope we have some devastating Lee+Williams going.

Please make a good impression and stay for the season

Heck yeah!

He's an NBA talent. We have another good passer in the lineup. If he buys in to the defensive mentality as well, whoo hooo.

dude's legit, if he wasn't a headcase I think he would've panned out in the Nets.

we still have a couple of positions open, so I think we will go after a few big men.

Can we somehow convince Darko to come back?

What I find interesting is that he can play the two or the three... More possible that Green or Pierce get moved?

I dont know, I dont think the signing of a CBA players to a ten day contract really signals signs that he will be the back up to a position of a major trade for the rest of the year.

filling. idk why we'd only sign a guy to a 10 day to make a big trade later on.
ppl think this means JG/BB for Smith is happening.

not sure why we'd sign a 10 day to watch this guy play maybe...2 games and move jeff green up outta here.

The guy is capable of playing three positions (four if we go small).

Super athletic, great rebounder for his size, good defender, explosive driver, great ball handler.

Can't wait to see him play.  Hopefully his time away from the NBA has humbled him a bit.

I was high on this kid coming out of college, and I thought he looked promising early on in New Jersey.

If he can get his head straightened out in Boston, this could be a great signing.

Welcome, Terrence.

great signing for a 10 day contract. williams has 10 days to convince people that the "knucklehead" part of his past is dead and gone.

outstanding talent burdened with a crushing ego so far. let's hope he has learned his lesson and will give the celtics some strong play off the bench. if williams has turned his head around, then danny has made a great addition to the team.

Great find! He's actually a really good playmaker when he chooses to be. My only dislike of him is he cost me my fantasy league playoffs last year...lol  :P I picked him up wehn he played for Sac & he shot horrible from the freethrow line (5-11 i think killing my percentage) Resulting me losing.  :'(great find nevertheless

No, he didn't. He was asked "What about Delonte West?" and said that he's "on the list" (the list at this point probably included every unsigned guard that can dribble a ball).

I agree, but when Barbosa went down, Doc was explicit about getting anybody who can ball, regardless of position.

TWill has a good handle, had a triple double with the Nets once, and fits in well with our point guard by committee.

Rare to get someone 4 years out of school and still have good upside.

Very excited.

Good handle, decent passer, can score off the dribble. Check out this game vs Suns last year.

I remember watching Terrence Williams for the Nets in a preseason game against the Celtics (I believe it was the Celtics) and remember thinking that this kid is gonna be one of the next great offensive players in the game. Too bad he couldnt get it together then, but hope he got it together in China and gets it for us now. In terms of pure talent, there was nobody better available.

Remember Doc said they don't need a pure PG, they just need someone to handle the ball, this signing falls in line with that.

Remember Doc said they don't need a pure PG, they just need someone to handle the ball, this signing falls in line with that.
I think there are two issues that are important here:

(1) I don't think there's anyone out there who's got the talent level to just be given the ball and trusted to be the full-time PG. Hence the need for a ball-handler (someone who can get us to the front court without turning it over) rather than a PG (someone who will direct the offense).

(2) We desperately need another player who can defend bigger guards (at some point we had to put Jeff Green on Kobe; he didn't embarrass himself, but I can't quite see this as a long-term solution).

So in a way, this is a two-in-one move to address both issues. Pretty nifty, if Williams can prove he fits the bill.

Seems a pretty spot-on analysis to me.  Man I hope Williams can at least give us 75% of what Barbosa was giving us.  I don't know much about him.  Is he known as a good def player at all?

Doc said he wants guys who can play regardless of position. Meaning the best guys to look at, when there are no clear cut guys based on talent, are versatile swiss army knife type players. Guys who can play multiple positions make it easier on the rotation's flexibility.

Williams fits that.

Great! Now Danny has to waive Barbosa (like they did with Green last season) and sign Yi Jianlian from China. Another lottery talent who couldn't live to big expectations, but who is a more mature player now. He can shoot, he's 7 feet tall and KG can hide his defensive flaws.

Trade Bass for Mozgov+Randolph and we're set.

At least, I hope T. Williams can help the team and stay for the season.

Oh yeah and tell them we'll move Collins for McGee too!

Bass is a very undesirable quantity at the moment. Good luck moving him at all let alone for a center who is NBA caliber.

I love the Williams signing too. Hope he doesn't get punched by KG for being a fool :)

Okay signing but to be honest, I don't expect him to see the floor much. He's here to have a warm body in practice, to learn the system, to be injury insurance against Lee, Terry and Bradley going down, and to play in the occasional garbage minute or so.

If at the end of his 10 day contract he has played more than 20-25 minutes total(six games), I would be shocked.

It really depends on how the games go. If they all go down to the wire, I wouldn't be surprised if he played 10 minutes total. If most are blowouts (for us hopefully), I wouldn't be surprised if he played 50 minutes. And then we can always get him on a second contract. I really want him to stay for the season, and I haven't seen him play in green yet. ;D

Normally I'd agree with you -- T-Will is the type of player who tends to have a lot of trouble seeing the floor on this team.

But if Doc Rivers really only plays T-Will 5-10 minutes a night when we have three healthy guards on the roster (including one who is 35 years old), then he's an complete and utter moron.

At this point, Doc needs to put his rotation together with the primary goal of not wearing guys out and preventing further injuries.  Putting the best team on the floor is kind of secondary when there are only 10 healthy players on the roster and one of them might as well still be in college he's so raw.

I like this bit of info from ESPNBoston

Quote
* TALENT OVER POSITION: Celtics coach Doc Rivers said that he and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge agreed last week that the team wouldn't seek a body based solely on positional need and instead would attempt to ink the best available bodies with the idea that pure talent had a better chance to crack the rotation. Rivers had said his wish list included a ball-handler and frontcourt depth. The 6-foot-6 Williams doesn't exactly fill either need, but he can handle the ball and distribute (a 21.7 career assist percentage), while also being a competitive rebounder (20.1 defensive rebound percentage). To put that in perspective, Pierce has a 22.9 assist rate this season (second only to Rajon Rondo on the Celtics), while Jared Sullinger's defensive rebound percentage was 22.2 percent before his season-ending injury. A former first-round pick of the Nets (11th overall), Williams' all-around skill set can potentially help Boston more than what's otherwise available at the positions of need for the Celtics.

I don't see your reasoning here.

This team is going nowhere and two of the guards in the rotation are very young. If Lee and Bradley can play 34 minutes a night that leaves the "old" Jason Terry with still having a conservative 28 minutes a night.

I don't see the need to play them less and arranging playing time to prevent wear and tear when none of your players are playing over 34 MPG is just coaching scared, IMHO.

Doc has his nine man rotation pretty much down. Anyone added via free agency is not going to crack that rotation nor should they. They will be there exactly for what I described. Now if there is a trade to bring someone in, that's different.

We just got a Tyreke Evans calibre player but with better athleticism. Excellent defender

Just like Evans he can't shoot the ball very good.

But i think DA did great getting a guy who replaces Barbosa's ways as best as he could. Driving the basket, passing, handling the ball, defense. If he shot well also, he would be a marquee nba player. Hopefully he can at least turn into a decent FT and open jump shooter.

So they win 8 of their last 9 games and that is going nowhere?

Further, Doc has been playing Pierce at the 2 and Green at the 3.  Basketball is a flexible game.  You don't have to play in the frontcourt if you are over 6'6"

Good 10 day. Makes you wonder with his talent just what kind of nutcase this guy is; but any time you have someone who has his ability have to give it a try.

As for minutes he has Bradley in terms of size and should give Lee a run for his money if he can get his head on straight.

The best player in China right now..I ll go with Steph Marbury..whatever you say, he was a champ last yr n look rejuvnated to some degree. Not a good pick up for the Celtics

He looked like the second best player on his team that was 28-4.  He might have been the best player but Yi Jillian was getting 10 more minutes a game than anyone else on the team.  In 27 minutes a game Williams was scoring 18points a game and had a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio.

Doesn't seem so bad to me.

Terence Williams hopefully will play better than he ever has playing on a team with direction and future HOFs.

He needs to learn not to do certain things on the court at certain times and also to execute things he is able to do, and can do well.

For example in our system, he will not dribble endlessly (a bad habit of his), pass the ball around, or pass it to the open man without needing to dribble much. When he sees an opening, using his dribble, quickness and athleticism to drive to the basket and either score the layup or pass it to the open man. When he is near about the foul line, and clearly open, to take the 2 pt shot. As for defense , i'm not worried as much because the team, kg and the fans will make him play great. You can't switch on us when you got got 3 or 4 guys on the court at the same time able to guard 2 to 3 positions.

What he cannot do again is
1. Dribble endlessly
2. Shoot threes, even open ones i think he should just hold off for now
3. Gamble on defense too much and just keep his man in front of him
4. Screw this up. If he gets in the rotation with a well coached team like the celts, he will get numerous offers from around the league. Not alot more coaching is needed then.

if the guy wanted to rejuvenate his career, he doesn't go to play in China, there are better leagues out there by far: Spain, VTBL, Germany, Italy.

Yi was great in the Olympics, I'd give him another chance just like Prigioni, Mills, de Colo, Shved, Kirilenko got chances.

I am sorry Kirilenko got chances??? The guy is the best all-around European player who went to play home to get healthy, there's not a team in the NBA that wouldn't want him.

Yi has always been a FIBA superstar and an NBA scrub. His game is just more suited to European rules and those types of opponents.

I really like this pickup - as far as low cost signings go, this is a pretty great one.

Fairly young guy who's a bit of a risk, but incredibly high upside if he gets his head on straight.  Very physically gifted player with the size and athleticism to defend and play three positions - like a rich mans Marquis Daniels, and that is exactly the type of guy I think we need.

Plus I think we could use another energy guy who can throw down so highlight-reel dunks and get the crowd and teammates energizsed, because I can't help but feel we get a little too 'nice' and 'passive' sometimes sitting around taking jumpshots.

If he gets his head on right, he has the potential to give us plenty of minutes across the PG, SG and SF postions...possibly even spend some time as a (very) undersized PF if we go small, as I've heard he's played stints at PF in the past with some success.

Nah, he wasn't a star before entering the NBA. He isn't a FIBA star now either, but he could give the Celtics 10 minutes a game if he's willing to work hard on D. He can shoot and his length could be useful for the C's. Plus, he's the biggest star in Chinese basketball and giving him a second chance would be big for business, too.

Provided the Celtics find a big who can protect the rim and backup KG at the center position, Yi could be a fine contributor as a stretching 4 with size.

This is probably TWill's last legit shot at the NBA. He has to know this since he was cut by Detroit in the preseason and ended up in China. Hopefully, this will motivate him. Plus, with Doc as his coach, he will have every chance to succeed.

Without Williams, the Celtics have nine healthy players and only three guards.  With a back-to-back in Denver and LA, I'd be shocked if he didn't see 5-10 minutes a game.

Terrence Williams is with #celtics but "highly unlikely" to play tonight according to Danny Ainge. Still waiting for letter of clearance

2. Doc worked out TWill this summer.

2. On TWill's twitter on Jan 29th:

Terrence Williams ‏@TheRealTWill
"People Will Be Shock To See What Uniform I Will Be Wearing Lol, God Is Def Working....."

http://twitter.com/TheRealTWill

Put 2 and 2 together, and it sounds like TWill knew he was leaving his playoff bound Chinese team 3 weeks ago and specifically for our Cs.

That can't sit well with the Chinese and may be why it's taking so long for their release or "paperwork" as Danny calls it.

Interesting. Maybe Doc and Danny are hoping something becomes available to move Lee or another few pieces. Cause if the tweet was that long ago, than they didn't know about Barbosa's injury then. So interesting to say the least.

But Rondo had just been injured, and the Celtics already had two open roster spots, so I would doubt that if this tweet was referring to the Celtics that it was for anything other than a reaction to Rondo's injury and needing more backcourt depth.  If they have really been planning to ship out a different 2-guard, why only sign him to a 10-day contract?

T-Will = great fit. He'll remind us of Ricky Davis when he came to town. Now C's need to get that Rondo for Howard swap deal going.  :)

Whenever, wherever. It's not like TWill would've gotten playing time the second he got here. Would prefer he practiced with the team first.

I think that the Chinese could be already ticked off at TWill for the reason mentioned earlier in the thread.

Don't think the paperwork is on their fast track.

well doc's comment don't help either. Chinese team is probably looking for some money from the celts first if they want speedy service.
