Title: Big Changes @ WEEI
Post by: Donoghus on February 13, 2013, 12:52:41 PM
Reports are that Ordway is out at WEEI with Mike Salk replacing him. Say what you want about the guy (esp the past decade or so) but he was a staple of Boston radio since the late 70s.

This comes on the heels of Morning show flash guy Kevin Winter getting let go on Monday.

How the once mighty has fallen.  WEEI used to be the top dog but its clear they are chasing Sports Hub at this point.

Personally, I think both stations are pretty horrific these days.

I have sports talk radio on my alarm, because it gives me enough aggravation to get out of bed.

Too bad that WAAF has the ridiculous Greg Hill in the morning, so I can' even get decent music on the way to work. Time to invest in some CDs.

Whoah, thats pretty crazy.  Thanks to the Big "O" for plenty of commutes home that he entertained me through.  Personally, I think that WEEI screwed up when they originally tried to shake up their lineup.

Dale and Holley was probably the most interesting and informative show on the station, they got rid of dale and tried to have holley help ordway.  Holley is still good but i honestly don't think they can compete with felger and mazz no matter who they pair Holley with.  Felger and Mazz is hands down the best show on sports radio in boston right now.

Also, didnt hear about Kevin Winter, but I think thats the right move he really sucked.  Meter was 10 times better than him.

I'm not saying this isn't true, it very well could be the reality of the situation going on behind the scenes, but I work for WEEI and this is the first I've heard of Big O being replaced.  There haven't been any inside rumors floating around the station at least which tends to happen when a shakeup is about to go down.

I wish they would get rid of those knuckleheads that are on in the morning. I can't listen to them anymore, spewing their republican agendas and kissing the ass of guys like Schilling. No thank you. Dump them please. Also not sad to see the Big O go, he's another one...

They actually don't talk politics anymore, not in several months, even around the election.  Also, I don't think they really care for schilling

Chad Finn was reporting it.  He's been pretty good on media stuff in the past.

I mostly enjoy the SportsHub.  Even when they're ridiculous, they're entertaining.

Not as big a fan of Gresh and Zo / Toucher and Rich.

Yeah, I saw the article by Finn who is usually spot on when it comes to industry news. As I said, this very likely could be what's going on, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they announced Big O was out as the afternoon guy.  It just hasn't been making the rounds within the station as a rumor.  I'm sure people will be talking about it now though.

Agreed.  As someone who has to watch the D&C show everyday for work I can attest to the fact that they rarely ever talk politics or even subtly share their political views anymore.  It's been a transition over the last year that I think is a positive for their program.

EEI is a ghost town, Maybe Big O can take over 98.5's terrible mid day show.

I am a huge T&R fan, but not sure how much of a shelf life those guys have... esp on Sports Radio.

Haha. It's true, Celticsblog was the place that broke this news for me.  These rumors haven't made their way down the hall to my office yet.

It will be interesting anyway to see what's happening around the office when I get back from my lunch break considering this is now the front page story on Boston.com.  I'm sure people will be buzzing about it.  As I said in my above comments, this news doesn't surprise me at all and I won't be shocked if this story is confirmed by the end of the day.  I think inevitable changes have been on the horizon for quite some time now.

Hmm I must've tuned out of EEI/D&C right around that time.  D&C was actually the last show that I would still switch over to EEI for on occasion.  I just remember those two would always get a laugh every time someone would call up and say "could you guys please talk sports!?" The response was always "haha, we talk about more than just sports here, deal with it."

Guess they should've been the first ones to see the demise coming...

WEEI isn't bad.  I prefer it to the sports hub, but WBUR is my top choice for radio

I've had the chance to work quite a bit with Glenn, he's a genuinely nice guy, always funny and friendly.  I think he's a pretty talented radio host as well.  Kinda stinks that this news got leaked before he had a chance to announce it himself.

I agree that Holley made Ordway much more likable and easier to listen to.  But I don't see how anyone can listen to Felger at all.

I love Felger.  I think he is the best on the radio these days.  It's nice to have an on air personality who challenges the audience, but then will actually have a relatively respectful give and take.

Most of the talking heads just yell over the callers and/or sound like shills for the team.  Felger takes ridiculous stances some times, but he does it to stimulate discussion, not to yell it at everyone until they are drowned out.

Felger's ridiculous opinions are just too much for me.  He is completely off the reservation 75% of the time (and that is being generous).  He just isn't a likeable personality.

I didn't hear it, although I would love to.  I imagine they said good things about them.  He helped them both out earlier in their careers, and I don't think there was any bad feelings between them.  My guess is they just bashed WEEI for dumping him.

One of the things I look forward to whenever I go up to New England is the talk radio, and in particular, sports talk radio.  Despite the complaints I just read, the pickings are much, much richer up there.  (I drive my husband crazy...started listening to sports talk radio when Eddie Andleman was on WEEI back in 1971.)  Of course I orinially fell in love with sports on radio listening to Johnny Most.   ;)  As soon as I hit the Massachusetts border, the CDs come out and radio goes on.

If you have a smartphone and an Aux-in for your car you can listen down in Florida. Both weei and the Sports hub have apps

;) I don't have a smart phone, or any other gadgets except a 10 year old cell phone that still works (I buy minutes).  I don't text.  I am so addicted to the computer...spend hours ever day on it...that I am afraid my life would be taken over completely.  I even still read "real" books, no kindle, no tablet, no smart phone, no mp3 player.  ha ha haha  just me and my laptop

Anyone else listen to the last Big Show? For a long time I really disliked Ordway, but felt like lately he had really stepped his game up since being paired with Holley. It sounded like a lot of the people there were close to tears. Sad to see him go, Monday at 2:00 should be interesting.

Felger and Mazz today:

Quote
MIKE FELGER: “I mean, he’s had a hell of a lot of success, and had a hell of a lot of success not all that long ago. And he’s been on the air with that show almost twenty years? I mean, probably over half of it, he was number one. And, it wasn’t all that long ago that he was still number one. And yes, we’ve had a good run here the last couple of years. But, what are [Ordway and Holley] now, I — you know, second to fourth… third, fourth, second, somewhere in that range. It’s not like they went to last [place]. And I just — from a personal level? Good God, I’m gonna be number one for twenty years, and then I’m third? And that’s tanking? And you’re out of a job? I don’t feel like being congratulated at all. That scares the crap out of me.”

TONY MASSAROTTI: “I actually spoke with him earlier today, and I hadn’t talked to him since; I’ve exchanged a text message, and said the same thing… I don’t get that whole thing, about, ‘congratulations’, for what? For, you know, for, for the fact that someone is now deprived of a livelihood?”

FELGER: “Well, it’s not just that, I mean, things change.”

MASSAROTTI: “Of course, they change.”

FELGER: “Quickly; we were third last spring.”

MASSAROTTI: “Hey, the Grim Reaper comes to get all of us sooner or later.”

FELGER: “Being another talk show host, I don’t like that one bit. Not good news, for me or anybody else. That third place is suddenly bad.”

MASSAROTTI: “I mean, in this business, to do that, for that length of time, is borderline unheard of, really. It’s extraordinary, and again, the — look, in this business, okay, you’re exposed. On a regular basis, every day, for twenty hours a week, and I’m not making a pity party. That’s the job. That is what the job is. And so, some of you love him, some of you hate him. Fine… but don’t disrespect the ability, is all I’m saying. And that’s how I look at it. So, I have tremendous respect for his talent, and again, I feel indebted.”

This is a bit saddening to me, as Ordway at least had some integrity and class.

You couldn't pay me enough to listen to or watch that afternoon nightmare with Felger and Mazz ... four hours of the most inane know-it-alls in the business, spewing anti-Celtic vitriol and blabbing about nothing.

Felger is the worst Boston-area sports "personality" to ever come down the Mass Pike, and I honestly can't believe people actually give weight to his twisted opinions ... he should've been booted from the Hub years ago, along with his loyal cronies.

Mazz is the same, just less intelligent and a smaller mouth.

Other than that, this is great news. :P ;)

Boston will miss the Big O.
