Title: Report: Milwaukee Bucks interested in Magic guard J.J. Redick
Post by: crownontherocks on February 09, 2013, 12:14:43 PM

Could Jacque Vaughn be pointing at the trade target for the Bucks? (Getty Images)
If you can shoot the ball at an elite level and not kill your team on defense, you're always going to be a hot commodity in the NBA. And that's exactly what Orlando Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick is. The sharpshooter with the perfect shooting motion, endless motor going around screens and solid understanding of defending within the team concept is the target of many front offices, including the Milwaukee Bucks, apparently.

If the Magic are only looking for an expiring and a first-round pick in exchange for Redick, the Bucks look like great trade partners. They have two expiring contracts in the neighborhood of Redick's $6.1 million expiring contract. Either Beno Udrih or Samuel Dalembert (he of the 35-point explosion fame) would work under the Collective Bargaining Agreement trade rules, and the Bucks have all of their first-round draft picks over the next few years.

If the Bucks are willing to give up a first-round pick and not have heavy protection on it, that could be more than enough to snag Redick away from Orlando and leave the rest of the NBA scrambling to find another available shooter. But the Bucks wanting to retain Redick in free agency shouldn't deter them from not making a deal like this happen.

The Bucks are sitting in the eighth seed with a four-game lead over the Philadelphia 76ers. They are not in real danger of falling out of the playoffs, but they have a realistic chance of moving up to the fifth seed if they acquire another shooter for someone like Dalembert, who really isn't a big part of their success. Even though they have played Miami well over the last couple of seasons, avoiding the Heat in the first round and trying to upset someone like New York, Indiana or Chicago should be the goal.

Non story for me. The Bucks with Reddick are still not a contending team no matter how you look at it.

Could make who the Magic get in return -- either Delambert or Udrih -- a buyout candidate.

I would've expected it to be someone who would give Redick a starting spot.

With Orlando asking for so much in return, why match their offering price for a 20-25 minute a night bench player? I think Redick would need 30-35 minutes a night to make it worthwhile to meet Orlando's trade demands.

Milwaukee doesn't make sense to me as a landing spot.

I think they are a perfect fit, provided they move either Jennings or Ellis for him.

Or in a subsequent deal.

Why would they move Ellis or Jennings for Redick? That would be taking 3 steps back for one step forward. Jennings and Ellis are both far superior players to Redick.

1. Jennings wants a max contract after the season.
2. Ellis and Jennings duplicate each others talents, while they may be better than Redick, JJ is a better fit to pair with either one.

Doesn't matter. You still need more than Redick back to trade one of those two. Redick and a 1st maybe.

If it allows the Bucks to move win more games, then I think it does matter. I think Jennings and Ellis are wildly overrated and the two of them playing together are the reason this team hasn't won more games.

You are probably right that Redick for Jennings or Ellis isn't fair but it is a goo framework for beginning discussions. Phoeinix has been reported to have interest in Jennings, maybe a three way deal would make sense.

My blog has covered a trade rumor every day in February. Today I was thinking about covering this JJ to Milwaukee article. What do you guys think of this http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=b72osfk

the reason they haven't won more games is because they took way too long to fire Skiles. He ruined that team.

Their weight went up when Larry Sanders emerged.

How good do you think Larry Sanders is?

I am still not sure what to make of him. I was hoping to watch him tonight against Greg Monroe but Sanders had to sit out. Pity, that would have been a really fun head-to-head matchup.

I think he is really very good. Just watched the Bucks vs Denver game from earlier in the weak and he was more active than Faried on the glass and more of a threat to block shots than McGee. Of course I'm biased because he's exactly the type of player that kills us.

For a large part of the season his defensive rating was the best in the league (of any regular rotation players). For some reason the basketball reference website isn't loading for advanced stats. His defensive rating is 96, a statistic that is heavily influenced by his teammates. Except his next best teammate's rating is 100 and that belongs to Samuel Dalembert who rarely plays at the same time as Sanders. The next best defensive rating is 103. He leads the league in block percentage.
