Title: Pick 2 Draft 2013: Interest Thread
Post by: Roy H. on February 06, 2013, 04:26:27 PM
Has anybody felt like it's been too long since one of our fantasy drafts?  Edgar and I are still basking in the glow of crushing IndeedProceed's soul in the CB Draft Finals.  I'm assuming the rest of you all are bored silly, though, and need some distraction from the perpetual trade rumors.

That brings us to this year's Pick 2 Draft.  The basic concept is that members sign up to be a GM of a franchise.  That franchise starts with two current players (i.e., the GM of the Miami Heat might select Lebron James and Chris Andersen to build around).  From there, a "draft" of all non-selected players is conducted to fill out the rosters.

Last year's sign up thread: http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=52509.0

Last year's draft board:  http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=53186.0

We're going with the same rules as last year, with one exception explained after IP's description:

Quote
It's (almost) that time again! The 'Pick Two' draft is nigh upon us, my brothers!

The Pick Two game is a fantasy basketball game, but for those few uninitiated players, its not a fantasy numbers game like Yahoo Fantasy Basketball or anything of the sort.

Its a game where you use your own basketball knowledge and ability to pick out players' strengths and weaknesses to draft a team you think would benefit the franchise most. Are you a 'win-now' guy? A GM with an eye for the future? Its your team, pick who you want, how you want.

Each GM starts out with an existing NBA franchise. You then select two players from that franchise as building blocks, and the draft commences.

http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=44108.msg909928#msg909928

That is a link to the thread from last season.

http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=44612.0

That is a link to an idea of how the teams looked at the end.

This game has no winners, no real evaluation period (unlike the summer (and infamous) 'CB Draft').

Its supposed to be laid back and fun. If you join, and make it not fun, you get thrown out on your butt.

This thread is just to gauge interest. Draft will start on Monday, Feb 13th, team selections and keepers will be made the week of 2/6 to 2/10.

The draft will take 3 weeks (which will just about bring us to the trade deadline).

If you wanna play, speak now. Preference given to owners who successfully participated in the draft last year.

The one rule change:  this year, salaries count.  Each team will be given a budget, which will be based upon a team's actual payroll or the luxury tax line, whichever is higher.  Teams will not be allowed to exceed their budget at any time.

11 teams currently exceed the luxury tax line.  Therefore, budgets are as follows:

Atlanta Hawks: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
    Boston Celtics $71.6 million
    Brookyln Nets: $83.1 million
Charlotte Bobcats: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
    Chicago Bulls: $74.1 million
Cleveland Cavaliers: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Dallas Mavericks: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Denver Nuggets: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Detroit Pistons: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
    Golden State Warriors: $71.5 million
Houston Rockets: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Indiana Pacers: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Los Angeles Clippers: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
    Los Angeles Lakers:  $99.9 million
Memphis Grizzlies: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
    Miami Heat: $83.4 million
Milwaukee Bucks: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Minnesota Timberwolves: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
New Orleans Hornets: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
    New York Knicks: $81.1 million
Oklahoma City Thunder: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Orlando Magic: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Philadelphia 76ers: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Phoenix Suns: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Portland Trail Blazers: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Sacramento Kings: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
San Antonio Spurs: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Toronto Raptors: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Utah Jazz: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)
Washington Wizards: $70.3 million (luxury tax line)

The salary cap floor for all teams is $46.4 million.

Please indicate your interest below.  If anybody is interested in assisting the staff as a Co-Commissioner, it would be greatly appreciated.

We'll work out the timing of the draft and the number of teams once we see how much interest there is.

Yes, I'm interested too. I think the salary cap should be equal for all teams if used though. Although, it doesn't matter much. It looks like LAL and NYK (oh and Miami) are the only teams with a significant advantage.

It's an experiment this year, to give the draft a little more "reality".  Salary has always been a factor in the Pick 2 draft, although nobody has ever paid it much attention.  This year, GMs will potentially feel a little constrained by their budget, just like a real GM would.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I check the site every day, but only at a couple of different times. How long will the draft clock be?

I'd like to play, but only if the draft clock isn't ticking down so fast that I have to log back in every couple of hours to keep up.

ED: never mind, I see the rules. 3 hours during "on the clock" hours from 10am to 8 pm, so minimum four picks per day. I'd like to play!

Teams are given specific draft slots; so long as you check in by that time daily, you'll be fine.

And definitely, these things are a lot of fun.

Probably 12.  Trades are allowed, including for "keeper" players.  There's a very, very loose veto power, but I can't foresee using it in this draft.

yeah, just try and trade Odom for Granger (circa 2 years ago) and see what hornets nest you can stir up   ;)

Question: doesn't the team variance on tax #'s create additional advantage for teams that already have an advantage?

Welcome to the world of the NBA.

There's no advantage, because this isn't competitive.  It's meant to be reflective of where the real life franchises find themselves.  20+ franchises play by one set of rules, and a handful of others have a monetary advantage.

I love this draft but I always seem to run out of time at the end. This is a lot of fun and I would be happy to be an assistant to a GM or a Flip Saunders to your playoff team. I just can't dedicate enough time this year during the weekdays to run the show. Let me know if you think I can help your team to the top. If I have no takers I'll be lurking and commenting as it goes.

Oh, even better question:

If you have the Charlotte Bobcats and someone offers you LeBron James for your entire franchise, do you make the trade? One player for an entire franchise? Do you do it?

Couple questions:

1st-How is it determined which franchise you get?

2nd-When do you guys plan on doing this?

3rd-Just out of curiosity, why use the actual tax line, when in reality that isn't necessarily the limit each team is constrained by?  At the very least, the apron is the "real" limit, and for some teams (who haven't used the full mle) they can go as high as they want.  Just seems arbitrary.

About time!

There is a draft. All the players are put into a random pool, and you get a number. Lowest number picks the team first.

When are the draft times?

There will probably be an afternoon session and an evening session.  Once we have everyone signed up, we can determine if there's a huge preference for keeping the draft 9-5, or whether people need time at night.  The default will be to do whatever we did last year.

Franchise swaps *will* be allowed prior to Day 1 of the draft, so if a certain time slot doesn't work, you can always trade out of it.

1.  There's a lottery.  The GM with the best pick in that lottery selects their franchise.  Then, players are drafted in reverse order of that lottery.  So, the team that selects their franchise first gets last pick of players.  Also, this draft does NOT snake; the draft order is the same in every round.

2.  That's still to be decided.  We need to gauge interest, and then we'll figure out a schedule.  It will start in the next two weeks, though.

3.  There's not a lot that's arbitrary about it.  Teams were given their actual payroll or the luxury tax, whichever was higher.  The vast majority of teams don't spend up to the tax, so they're actually being given a handicap here.  If, however, we play with significantly less than 30 franchises, we may bump the budgets up a little.

Never done any draft on CB before, but I'm very willing to give it a shot, if there's space.

One question for Roy or anyone who can answer: are draft orders / times selected in a lottery fashion? If so, can we trade draft picks if there is a time conflict?

I think people will just track it for themselves.

Maybe put the salaries next to players on team roster page and total team salary alongside the roster. Each team owner can do that when posting updated team roster on that thread.

It's just a recognition that certain teams have built-in advantages.  Not only do the Lakers have Dwight Howard and Jodie Meeks, but they can spend $30 million more than anybody else.

If the idea of the Pick 2 draft is to start with the foundation of a real team and see where you end up, then it makes sense to use that team's actual situation.  We'd never do something like this in the CB Draft, on the other hand, as that starts from scratch.

I was so-so on this idea at first, but I'm warming up to it.  I'm looking forward to see how many of the wealthy team owners go willy-nilly on salaries and wind up putting together a bloated, overpaid, incohesive team.  Kinda like today's Lakers and last decade's Knicks.

So, how will we keep track of teams' salaries/cap room?  I'm fine with doing it for myself but with 30ish owners I'm guessing some will not pay close attention.
I think people will just track it for themselves.

Maybe put the salaries next to players on team roster page and total team salary alongside the roster. Each team owner can do that when posting updated team roster on that thread.

I love the salaries idea.

But why not we all just get one hard cap instead of using real teams' budgets? Just a suggestion.

I don't think that will happen to anyone.

I think what we will see is those teams will just be able to have more expensive role players on their roster. When other teams are looking for guys on minor perhaps even minimum contracts, the Lakers will be able to take guys like Bass at $7 million or Maxiell or $5 million with 9th-12th picks.

Yeah, hopefully it's as interesting as I'm hoping.  I wanted to add a deeper layer this year.  It's an experiment, and if it doesn't work, we'll adjust and/or scrap the whole salary idea next year.

See, I think that's how you or I or several other people would play it.  But in practice I think at least one owner will get budget-drunk and make some poor decisions because of it.

I am thinking a few teams are going to go over budget when adding their role players and end up looking for salary dump type trades in that second week to try and get below the salary cut-off.

Since salaries come.into place, what about future draft picks? Also, do trades have to conform to the CBA? Do they matter?

I don't know what you mean about future picks.

As for trades, the only financial rule is that a trade can't put you over budget.

I mean, future picks. If we have to conform to a salary cap, shouldnt we also be able to help our ability to bargain by buying a bad contract for a future pick. Seems have a lot of ccap space makes it easier for you to buy future picks which might make your own self analysis of the job u have done easier or more fun.

Well, in his defense, he also got a draft pick used on Thomas Robinson.  For his team, Lowry's superior defense and passing would have been helpful.

Yeah but the kid traded Lowry and Robinson anyway for Felton and Lord knows who, I forgot who he traded him for. I tell you, I won't be surprised if he trades superstars for fringe stars again this game. He's fun to watch.

No trade kickers or anything of that nature.

Salaries will probably be the ones listed at shamsports.  I'll put together formal rules before draft time.

I'm interested in participating again!

I'd be interested if there's space.

Never done any draft on CB before, but I'm very willing to give it a shot, if there's space.

One question for Roy or anyone who can answer: are draft orders / times selected in a lottery fashion? If so, can we trade draft picks if there is a time conflict?

Yes and yes.  You can also send a list to a fellow GM, and ask them to choose for you.

Okay, then I'm in.

interested if their is room...

I think that is everyone who isn't already on the list of participants. I hope that helps.

I think the "interest threads" usually run for a week or two before things get started anyway.

Yeah, I think 28 would be ideal. That would be great if we can get that many.

Dump Orlando and somebody else ... maybe Charlotte.

Orlando would really suck.  The Magic have to be the worst Pick II roster in the league. You would be starting off with JJ Redick or Arron Afflalo and Niko Vucevic. How do you build anything with that? Ugh ... that would be a nightmare.

I think it'd be better though if we all started with 70 million as it wont be competitive for the teams that have to get the bad teams like charlotte

There's no rush on this, folks.  Relax.  We'll get started when we've heard from more GMs.

Ideally, we'll have a full 30 GMs.  There should be a minimum of 24, but hopefully more.  If teams have to be contracted, we'll let the GMs decide what teams those will be via the draft (i.e., whichever teams don't get picked are contracted).

I'm retired, so my role will be commentary and consultation, mostly.  I've got a busy schedule coming up, so all GMs are gonna have to chip in a bit on Commish duties, as well.

I'm staying open-minded about participating in the historic draft, and I'll probably participate in the silly ones (Ultimate Draft, etc.)

I reserve the right to change my mind in the future, though.

So to people who are viewing this and have not participated in these kind of games yet, I have a question?

You think you can be a good GM? Test it now by signing up. Limited slots are left.

So, is the rule that you cannot exceed the cap your team has.  Like, for instance, if your team's salary cap was $70 million, the total salary of the players you select (12-15?) cannot pass $70 million.  Is that how it goes?

yes 12 players and you can exceed that cap

Suggestion for keeping things clean and organized- when you pick you should list

Player picked (salary)
Remaining salary
Maximum bid (salary - roster spot holds)

My fear is getting to the end and people having spent too much and not being able to fill out their rosters. Could be a real disaster

If you can exceed the cap, does that also mean you can be under it once you've selected 12 players?

Curious - if you were the Heat would anyone else consider not keeping Wade or Bosh?

I'm kind of assuming that at this point Bosh is the more popular choice than Wade (to play alongside LBJ)

Ditto. Wade/LBJ overlap a lot

But it is a great quandry for this draft, talent versus fit. I can see it working out either way you go.

Reality, yes. Just entirely too good of a contract and you know, check out the playoff numbers.

In this excercise - I probably try to have fun with it and build a cast of old guys who can compete now.

Okay, we'll have a finalized roster of GMs by this coming Wednesday at noon EST.  Draft order will be announced shortly thereafter.

The plan is to draft teams and "keepers" beginning on Wednesday Thursday.  The draft itself will start the following Monday.

Maybe?

Roy,

Are we using this year's salary numbers or last? Important for a guy like Blake who makes 7 this year, 13 next.

Also, if anyone wants an OK spread sheet I'm willing to share mine. I'm just using my existing one from the summer and then adding salaries in.

This year's.

For simplicity sake, we'll use shamsports' numbers.

If a guy is selected who is not currently playing in the NBA, I will (somewhat arbitrarily) assign them a cap number.  Anybody who wants to know a cap number for a free agent should PM we or ask publicly.

Sounds good. Only issue I could see is there's a lot of players who have years that are listed as (unguaranteed) without any real specifics.

I take Bosh. Bosh has been more important to Miami than Wade this year.

Plus, it is easier to build a team around Bron/Bosh than Wade/Bron. You have more flexibility in the types of players you can put around them. Wade + Bron kinda pegs you in. Limits options.

I don't take Rondo because he is out injured for the rest of the season.

I'd take Pierce and Garnett and try to build a short term contender around them.

I've been thinking on if I had the 4th pick for a team. There are clear 1-3 picks, or at least 3  teams that stand over the rest of the league.

It's a really tough choice. There are just big challenging weaknesses to every team.

Oklahoma and Miami. Clippers. Spurs. Knicks.

Hmmm ... not sure where I go after that. So I got five teams ahead of the pack.

A lot depends on where you're picking them. Some teams have a much higher value later in the lottery because you have an early pick in the first round.

I don't think Id go Spurs. Maybe Knicks. Probably not. The money tied up there, I balk at it, and frankly, I just don't think the incarnation now, in luxury tax super land, is all that good.

Guys , if you get Miami, be sure to trade Lebron. Trust me, it makes sense.

Ha.

No one asked your opinion, Proceed.

Hey IP,

Whats ur opinion on the whole miami situaish?

Sincerely,

StartO

He thinks you should take Lebron, and trade Bosh + pieces for Kyrie Irving.

Lebron + Irving would be the most dominant combo in the Fake NBA, and Chris Bosh is a girly man.

So am I allowed to take the And-1 team, or would that be unfair to the other owners?  Playing for 2nd before you make any picks would have to be discouraging.

I'd take Wade and LeBron. I know Bosh+LeBron would be a better tandem to build around, but Wade instantly becomes the #1 overall pick in all likelihood, or close to it.

And I think you can get better assets for Wade in a trade than you will have with Bosh+James.

Yeah, the smart move is probably to keep Lebron + Wade, and then trade Wade for the #1 pick plus a later pick.  Then you take Bosh, and have an extra pick.

Somehow, I forsee myself ending up with the Charlotte Bobcats and a roster consisting of Gerald Henderson, Corey Magette, Mike Dunleavy Jr, Josh McRoberts & Elton Brand.

Our email system isn't working correctly right now, so notifications might not work properly.

Just a friendly reminder to all:

Your email boxes can get filled up very quickly playing this game, especially if you do a lot of trade talk, sooooooo......

EMPTY OUT SOME OF YOUR OLDER EMAILS IN YOUR INBOX AND SENT BOX.

speaking of which, IP I sent you a PM with my team choices and keepers in the event I'm not available to pick after the first team is picked.  The message box isn't showing a track record of that message.  Can you confirm you received it?  Thanks.

Sure.  If you want salt lover's team, you're up now.

You'd get the 12th pick in each round.

If you're up for it, just make a team selection in the "Draft Order" thread, along with two keepers.

Welcome to the blog.
