Celtics rookie Feb Melo was working on his post moves at the end of practice, and you'll see future-Hall-of-Fame legend Paul Pierce notice him
-
love it, love how the captain is teaching the rookie how its done!
Fab Melo needs to be more aggressive if he's going to help us anytime soon...
this isn't the D-League...he needs to be mean!
-
He is what he is, but his hands are poor and he is weak. PP was pushing him around from what I saw, he is raw. Everytime they made contact Melo went backwards. He has improved since we got him but he needs a lot more work on his hands and strength. Both things that can be fixed with time.
-
Great stuff. So the rook gets stuffed on his first try, but then sinks a nice jump hook over the vet on the second try. Fast learner!
Why is Paul wearing Blazers shorts? lol

yeh I saw more or less the same thing...doesn't Fab have a good 5 inches and a good 40 pounds on Pierce??
you can't let Pierce push you around like that...this guy needs a speed course with KG
I can see him as a good help defender like Ibaka and DeAndre Jordan but I cannot see him as a good post defender like Perk was...well at least not yet...

Pretty sure he is stronger than what this video has shown, You can't rough up PP, he's the man. Can't go hard on him, But PP is still PP, he has a really good post up game for his size, so crafty.
Hope Fab gets a mean streak like Green has found in the last couple of games.
-
Pierce is still stupid good.
-
Cool video. I'd love to sit in for a full practice, all that behind the scene stuff is awesome.
-
Pierce is still stupid good.
Yup but the video didn't do a whole lot to show it off
-
I have always heard PP was really strong for his size.
-
TP. ! enjoyed the video. got a huge laugh
Pierce. hacking Fab....... ;D
-
Pierce is the man
As for Fab i dont think he was trying to get too physical with the face of the franchise for the past 15 years in little joking around basketball sequence.
-
Why is Paul wearing Blazers shorts? lol
He probably got them last year or maybe in 2005, just in case...
-
I have always heard PP was really strong for his size.
Well he's 6'7 ... I guess by nba standards that's normal but in reality yes he's very big and strong and uses his body well

Yeah, PP is tall and has a wide body. He uses it to its full capacity. PP is a Legend

It's a skill to learn how to work against pressure and how to protect the ball, and size doesn't make you not have to know how to do those two things.
He has to learn.
Big men just don't learn low post offense like they once did.
-
It's not like they were going hard. I'm sure if Melo wasn't going against the face of the franchise and it was a shootaround he could have stuffed Pierce. He has like 50 pounds and 4 inches on him.
What I think it does a good job of showing is the value of having veterans around like Pierce and KG so they can help the younger guys along and also keep the egos in check to make sure they realize they haven't made it. They can always get better.
-
Well, there is a reason I have suggested that Paul Pierce might make a better smallball 4 than Jeff Green.
-
pp is wearing the shorts thta oden gave as a gift when GO visited waltham ;D
-
KG is in the background working hard on his craft. Love it

So was Jason Collins, our secret weapon
Cannot believe some people got "Melo is weak" out of this video. Like some have already pointed out, it's practice against a teammate who is a lot smaller. You really want Pierce injured?
Nice to see that the vets are taking Melo under their wing. Melo has a good work ethic from what I've seen.

Most talented versatile scorer ever IMO

There are two of these threads going. Shouldn't they be combined?

He only benched 185 nine times in the combo so he is weak by NBA standards. I think him getting pushed around was about his lack of leg strength. PP got low and use a low center of gravity. One has to realize that Melo is a neophyte at basketball.
That being said he looks stronger than he did when he first got drafted. It may take a year or two to get NBA strong.

I've have seen 6'7 guys who are weak and not strong like say Reggie Miller. Height does give leverage but not always strength. I am over 6'7" so PP is not a big man to me. I am probably 1-2" taller than that depending on shoes but I am 6'7" in bare feet. It took some lifting and hard work to get stronger but it's not automatic ability of size.
Melo will get there, just takes some time, he is young. A twenty year old is not a full grown man at peak strength. PP could guard LeBron straight up and that is no small feat. That alone ought to show his strength. I have seen him back down Carmelo too, who is bigger. Give him a few years and look out he will be a wall down low.
-
I like that Fab doesnt back down after he gets bumped out of position. I thinkn its just basketball instincts. Still need to add more strength in the leg I think, but I like how he doesnt shy away from contacylt.

as clutch as anyone

haha spot on analysis of a lazy post-practice set. Go away

Apparently Sully did 9 bench presses too.

Plus Jajuan Johnson bench pressed 325 pounds.

even just messing around Paul makes it look so easy

Not the best, didn't say that
But deff the most talented and versatile. Scoring for him is easy. He has infinite amounts of spots on the floor that he can score. Can't say that for alot of players

I love that people on here actually tried to take something serious from a 1 minute video of those two dudes messing around.

typical overreacting on Celtics Blog lol

There are some things one can get out of these "messing around" videos in practice. I remember seeing Perk in training camp in his second year playing Pierce one and one and I was surprised at how well he moved his feet and guarded the talented SF.
Pierce got his shot off at will, but Perk was on his shooting hand and in decent position most of the time. Perkins also showed more handle with the ball than I thought he had. Very surprising.
This Melo video tells me that he plays "too high." He's got to lower his center of gravity a bit both on offense and defense. I'm guessing he doesn't have enough core strength yet.

Ha yeah I can't tell if people are saying things tongue in cheek or if they are serious with their analysis.
If you read it as tongue in cheek they are pretty awesome posts.
-
I can't resist joining the over-analysis.
Melo didn't look like he was playing very hard (not that he usually does).
He also appears to be drilling baby hooks to the right. Pierce knew where he was going and just took the opportunity to point out that he wasn't protecting the ball. There's a guy at my gym who is much older and smarter than I am who does the same thing to me, even though I manage to be a pretty effective post player in our games.
Of course Pierce schooled him one-on-one. Melo has literally never stood in front of someone who can score as easily as many ways as Pierce. It wouldn't matter if he was ten feet tall.
