Title: Super Bowl XLVII
Post by: Donoghus on February 03, 2013, 12:35:01 PM
Game day is finally upon us.

Thoughts? Predictions? Analysis?

Niners 24 Ravens 20

I expect a tight one and lower scoring than most pundits are predicting.  I just think, in the end, Niners D is a little bit better and they'll be able to grind it out on the ground in the end.

Tough to be going against a team that has been catching all the breaks (ala destiny) like Baltimore, though.

Not really too concered with who wins, I just don't have any strong dislike of either team.

Hopefully this will be an exciting game.  And hopefully my squares come up.  I have (SF-7/Bal-6)(SF-4/Bal-9)//(SF-2/Bal-3)(SF-3/Bal-0).

My predictions:
1st qtr: 7-6 SF
Halftime: 14-9 SF
3rd qtr: 17-16 SF
Final: 30-23 Bal

Gimme that MONEY!!!

I don't really have any thoughts.  I just got back from New Orleans a couple days ago, though. I was out there filming some behind the scenes stuff at the Superdome for my company.  It was pretty crazy over there.  I got to tour the stadium and also shoot some stuff at the media center.  Had a ton of fun.

I posted while I was there that I was in a quiet little dive bar from the 1700s at like 2 in the morning and the only other people there were Bill Simmons, Rembert and a few of their friends (possibly also Grantland employees).  I introduced myself to Simmons (I'm a huge fan)... shook his hand and told him I was a Celtic fanatic as well.  He said, "We've had a rough week"... they were on their way out, unfortunately.  I asked if I could get a picture with him (since I happened to have a camera on me) and he said, "I'm not supposed to be here".  Not sure what he meant by that since the fact he was in Nawlins was all over his twitter feed.  Oh well.

I made up for it (sort of) a night later by going into a little jazz club on Frenchmen Street.  I was told that's where the locals go (outside of the French Quarter)... Great music.  Then I spotted Neil Patrick Harris.  Introduced myself to NPH, talked to him briefly and asked for a pic.  He was super friendly and agreed.  Unfortunately, my coworker took the pic and it came out terrible.  Hah.  Andrew Luck happened to be at the same club.  I would have talked to him, but I don't know crap about the NFL.  I didnt' even recognize him until my coworker pointed him out.  So basically, I spent all night dancing on the dance floor with Andrew Luck and Neil Patrick Harris.  Fun times.

Here's some random pics I took.
(the woman who keeps reappearing in pics is our director of marketing that I traveled with)

I have so little rooting interest in this game.  Someone please give me a reason to like or dislike one of these teams.  I tend to dislike the whole Ray Lewis thing, but also dislike Jim Harbaugh and Kaepernick has not appealed to me in interviews.

I suppose I can just root for a good game. I find the pomp of the Superbowl irritating.  Haven't watched a halftime in years.  The commercials don't usually do much for me.

Maybe I'll read Grisham instead.

Reason to like the Niners if you're a Pats fan... Randy Moss.

I like the Niners in this game for that reason, as well as the fact that I have family from the area that are huge Niners fans

Moss isn't a plus for me.  He had a great season with the Pats, but that season ended in the biggest disappointment of all time (other than the '87 and 2010 Celts).  Seeing Moss is just a painful reminder.

No question about it - I feel foolish for getting my hopes up for this game.  They made critical mistakes against the Giants last year, and they made mistakes against Atlanta even though they managed to win that game.  Horrible turnovers.  I know there's still a ton of game to be played, but it doesn't look good.

Cary Williams is lucky that he didn't get anything for pushing the ref when they were fighting.
Also the 49ers and their turnovers are gonna hurt them.

Well, a 15 point deficit is anything but insurmountable, but it feels like the 49ers are on life support right now.  What a terrible half of football.  It's going to take a tremendous defensive effort to pull out a comeback.

San Fran DBs pretty much giving up.  They should probably ask some of their receivers if they'll consider playing DB, or this could get even uglier. At the rate they're going they better leave the DBs off the plane for the ride home. "Oh I'm sorry. This plane ride is only for members of the 49ers. That played in the Super Bowl".

Between the Ravens dominance, the worse than usual commercials, and Beyonce's "half time show" I rate this Super Bowl somewhere in the vicinity of getting teeth pulled or listening to Bill Maher talk. The only thing that can save it is playing in the dark, which is what we've always wanted

Baltimore came to play and to win so I have no gripes with them winning. Also I like Ray Lewis, but I know Ray will be crying and will show out tonight.

SF was robbed.  It is now acceptable to hold a receiver from yard 5 of the pattern to yard 10+ of the pattern.  Truly a LOW point for the league.

Why do they not give each coach at least one play where they can ask for a TV replay in the last two minutes and in OT??  Why would the NFL not want something like this so they don't look like the fools that they now look like.

Sad night for the NFL.

Smitty77

Would have been first and goal on the 2.5 yard line with about 1 minute and 40 seconds to go.  Unbelievable.

I think just as big of a botched call was the no-call offside on the ravens on that two point conversion attempt.

If San Fran converts that after a penalty putting the ball on 1, then they dont have to score a touchdown on that last drive.  They can kick a field goal at the 15 yeard line and take the game to OT

I agree—that was a bad no-call. But let's take the whole game into consideration: if the Niners hadn't played like a JV squad the entire first half, they probably win that game easily.

The penalty on their first play of the game to negate about a 15-yard gain.

James's fumble.

Culliver giving up that 30-something-yard reception down the sideline after it appeared the Niners would either sack Flacco or force him out of bounds.

Culliver giving up that ridiculous long touchdown.

Niners offsides penalty on third down, which led to a do-over on which Baltimore scored its first touchdown.

Let's face it: the Niners were brain-dead in the first half (and I wanted them to win).

I agree.
But just because a team plays bad in the first half, DOES NOT mean that you can not give them an OBVIOUS defensive holding call.

I mean imagine if a ref said that. "Well the Niners had so many other chances to win the game, we figured that this call wouldn't make any difference in the outcome of the game."

The bottom line is that no matter how bad they played in the first half, Crabtree was held to prevent the TD. THere is no way to excuse that.

I guess i'm just being a sore loser here but that was clearly a hold. Crabtree's jersey was in the DB's hands. I understand that my Niners shot themselves in the foot early, but that flag could've changed the whole thing.

Like Skip Bayless said, it is a "let em play" scenario, but when it's that obvious, you call it.

It's as clear as Kobe elbowing Mike Bibby.

BTW, Chris Culliver was was flagged on the same penalty (same play to, he had Boldin's jersey) in the 1st quarter on 3rd down, which resulted in a touchdown BTW, but they miss that holding on Crabtree? Am I saying that the refs sided with the Ravens, of course not. But they can't miss that call, just cant!

(i didn't even include the Roughing the Kicker, which they said was "touching the kicker).

Were the Ravens the luckiest team to ever win, they got like every bounce and break.
plenty of calls and bounces went against them (or at least non-calls). Clear pass interference against Smith early in the game was not called.  Flacco was hit at least a full yard out of bounds (should have been a penalty). Missed the fake FG run by a yard. 3rd and goal from the 1, they pass and then kick a FG. Flacco is sacked taking the team out of FG range. With momentum clearly to the Niners, Rice coughs the ball up. etc.

You can do the same thing with the Niners, but it isn't like Baltimore got every call or every break in the game.
