Title: Open roster spots: sign KMart?
Post by: rondohondo on February 01, 2013, 04:27:36 PM
Kenyon Martin makes the most sense now, unless Danny trade PP and KG.

is Kristic still under contract in Russia?

We have 2 roster spots, not sure of the rules to get additional roster spots for injured players.

It's pretty rare that the league gives another roster spot.  You need at least four guys out with long term injuries, I believe.

I can say with certainty that it would be stupid not to sign Kmart if we can. We lacked big men before and now losing a PF we could use anyone really and Kmart was a decent pick up even before this injury

Minnesota got a temporary 16th roster spot because they had four guys out for at least two weeks.  A big is likely to become available because of that because the T-Wolves used their exemption to sign ex-Celtic Chris Johnson to two ten-day contracts.  They seem to like him so they might trade Lou Amundson to make space for him.  If not, CJ becomes available.  I would take either guy, as I suggested in a thread in the trades forum.

Is Leon Powe healthy these days? Ha Get Krstic or Darko back from oversees.  I'm afraid KG will burn out if we don't get able bodies soon.

K-Mart would make our defense that much nastier, but I'm not sure I'm looking forward to adding another 35+ year old guy to the rotation with our contention hopes shot.

A little too reminiscent of adding Bimbo Coles and Grant Long to that 03 Celtic team.

Naw . .. I'm sure Danny & co have a short list of guys they're ready to call in.

I know what you mean, but one injury to one of Miami's ''big three'' and depending on how Rose comes back and I'll take my chances with anyone in the east in the playoffs. K-Mart gives us a more legitimate shot than any d-league player or any other free agent big man available. A rebounder and defender is exactly what we need in a backup PF and that's exactly what K-Mart brings.

I sign him to the vet min no questions asked.

Lets get Kmart, AI, T-Mac and hell why were at it lets try to talk Yao out of retirement.

Teams done, better off trading pierce and KG to a team where they can compete for a title together.

Kmart won't do jack for this team

I have not been on the bring in KMart idea until today. I just did not see the guy that tormented Walker and Pierce so many years ago, wearing Green.

Now, I have definitely changed my mind. Yes, he is 35, and yes, he is not the same player that he was years ago. But he does have a nasty streak and knows how to rebound. KG and Kmart could ruffle some feathers in the playoffs and we are not beating teams like Miami/Chicago/Knicks without feather rufflers.

I say do it, 2002 is a long time and I will embrace Kmart with open arms if he can help us intimidate and win.

Instead of an injury-prone player, why not suggest someone who has the positive trait of usually being healthy?

Ask Jeff Green and RR about that... doesn't seem to matter whether they are always hurt or healthy their entire career before they got here, people just fall like flies here.

There's a reason why players like Kmart and Delonte West still can't find work even though they clearly can still contribute significantly to an NBA team, contender or not.  But given what has transpired this past week, I wouldn't mind giving Kmart a shot.

Yeah that's basically my thinking on it as well. Nothing wrong with a 10 day contract for the guy, right? See how he fits in, etc.

I'm not sure why you would think so. Martin plays really hard. He'd have more of an issue with a guy who simply doesn't care (i.e. Patrick O'Bryant)

This is back in 2010, but I find Martin's thoughts interesting and very respectful.

Quote
“I’ve watched KG a few times and I’m like…he’s just trying to gut it out. He’s not ready yet but…he’s stuck it out. That’s why he’s somebody’s trying to get this team…to go out and lead by example and get the rest of them guys to see…if I’m hurt playing this way, then you guys need to pick it up. There’s a respect factor going on. But they’re a [dang] good team still.”

From a distance, Kenyon Martin sees the leadership and sacrifice of Kevin Garnett. Martin understands that he himself is not so young anymore. He will rest as much as possible before seeing how much he can contribute come playoff time.

I'm guessing they pull someone out of the D League and wait to see if anyone gets waived.  But the chances of finding someone who could make a contribution to me are remote at best.

Whoever they brought in...would they be an upgrade on Collins - a guy who at least hustles, knows the plays and has been there all year?  We're talking insurance for someone else going down.

Sorry, too lazy to read. In any case, we have enough spots to sign whoever's out there -- the issues may be the cap situation and the fact that, well, there isn't much out there, really.

I'd read that Haddadi has visa issues that prevent him from entering Canada. However, Colangelo views him as a trade chip, and would probably waive him only as a last resort.

Danny said we will have 13 players (obviously RR and Sully are 14/15) on the roster when it's said and done and that we have "trade possibilities" and we'll see through the free agent deadline.

This would be the cheap man's route to get into the playoffs, which I could see us doing.

Anyone here recall the playoffs back in '02, when K-Mart was beating his chest in front of a front row seated Red Auerbach?

I know we probably can't get Big Al but whatever happened to his cousin and look-alike Tiny Gallon?

Haddadi will be 28 by the time the playoffs roll around. This doesn't qualify as young in my book.

That aside from the fact that he can't really play.

At this point I'd rather pick up some D-leaguers or some other unsigned young guys who have a 1/100 chance of becoming a rotation player long term.

K-Mart is just another Jason Collins type of player.

Not sure what you mean by that comparison. I would take KMart over Collins any day regardless of how old he is. In any case, I really hope Danny brings in a vet, not a D-leaguer.

I was always in favor of signing KMart but now with Sully's surgery it seems like a no-brainer.

I want KMart but would def take on Haddadi as well.

The thing is there aren't any options that are better and they are both better than Collins I don't even think there is an arguement.

Haddadi may be 28 but thats still young especially when you consider that he basically had never been to the US, couldn't speak a word of english and had was taught to play in  the Iranian professional league.

At the very least he can rebound, block shots, and set good picks which is better than Collins.

I just think we needed bigs before Sully (who barely classifies as a big) went down. Now we need minimum 1 or 2 bigs and I don't know where we are going to get them.

I guess we'll see who gets bought out but I'm thinking Haddadi will be a better option than some other 35 year old Collins equivalent who has "veteran experience".

He spent 4.5 years in the league clearly demonstrating that he can't last more than 7 minutes a game. I don't really care why.

Also, we already have the token project guy in Fab Melo, who's pretty much the same player, and is considerably younger.

What I mean by that comparison is that K-Mart is a "break glass in case of emergency" one season only role player.  He offers no value for the future, and isn't even particularly good right now.  He's only an emergency solution.

But winning doesn't even matter to me anymore.  I'd rather take on some D-league guys who have a tiny chance of becoming the next Greg Stiemsma (halfway decent role player) rather than a guy who has one foot in retirement already.
