Title: How did you become a Celtic fan?
Post by: CelticConcourse on January 27, 2013, 10:54:04 PM
Resident in Boston?
Family ties?
Like the logo?

Personally, I become a fan during the game where Rondo played through his elbow dislocation. What heart! From that point on, I became a Celtic fan for life.

Hopefully we can sticky this or something so we can all share why we love our Celtics!

I've problem this story so many times but here it goes.

My uncle John was down from Maine when I was in 6th grade and that was 01'. I had never really followed a team as I am in South Florida and was only 11. I will say loved MJ and the Bulls just because he was so great, But didn't know really anyone else on the team except for Rodman Tony Scottie and Luke Longly. (Even had a bulls blanket I carried everywhere) But my uncle was down and we we're watching the Celtics and the Sixer, and I also Loved AI growing up. So we are watching and he asked if i liked any teams. I said i love AI but not really a sixers fan. So he said Don't like the Knicks like your dad that team is putrid. Start watching these guys. So i did. I watched Pierce (who from that day foward will be my favorite player of all time) and Walker rain threes against the sixers. Along with a great playoff run to the ECF and one of the best games i've ever watched with the epic comeback against the Nets.

So here's to my uncle John! RIP and I love ya!

After high school a friend that I wasn't really good friends but friendly enough with started to ask me to play ball with him after work and at mens leagues.

At the time I was a Bulls fan(this all started in 96 by the way) and after a short while started to hang out a lot and he would have me over to watch the games.

I'd go over for just about every game and just fell in love with the team and tradition. And this was during some up and down times as well. Not sure why but they just sucked me in and now I can't leave!! :D

I'm from Greece and when I was about 13 years old I accidentaly got to watch an NBA playoff game between the Celtics and the Pacers... yep, it was that 2003 playoffs game 4 when PP went berserk in Q3 for 21 pts and the craziest in-yo-face buzzer right on Harrington's face to shut him up.

Pierce instantly became my favorite player, and the Celtics have been my favorite team since then... I went through thick and thin with this team and now I'm as loyal a fan as it gets, although I live thousands of miles away.
But now that Pierce might get traded or retire, it's gonna be weird... he's the reason I became a Celtics' fan after all!! :-\

Also, the color green naturally appeals to me, so that probably influenced my subconscious decision of "bleeding green".

I wish I was young enough to say Bulls-Celtics, but the game I was referring to was watched on a black and white television.

I remember watching them in the early 90's when I was just a kid and my dad and I were watching them play and at the time (and still is) my favorite color was Green. From then until about 2000 I didn't watch too much basketball, then I heard about Paul Pierce. Been a hardcore ever since.

1998. I was a huge Michael Jordan fan. Followed the NBA quite religiously, and that's coming from a 11 year old kid at that time in the Philippines. Got to see the games in the mornings or at times delayed telecasts. Jordan retired.
Fast forward to 2000, 13 years old, I stopped watching basketball, but kept playing for city leagues and played for my school. Decided to watch a game came across Celtics vs Timberwolves match. Fell in love with the game again. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett caught my eye. From what I remember they both had a pretty good game that night.

From then on I followed the Celtics because of Paul, and the Wolves because of KG, I even have their stickers on my notepads and pencil case for school. I drew Lucky and the Wolves logo on the back of all my notes.

2006, I left the Philippines and moved to Canada, didn't really know anyone, just turned 18, my only comfort was my guitar and watching the Celtics and the Wolves. Went to all the Raptors games when the Celtics or the T'wolves were in town. A year later, KG got traded to the Celtics, you wouldn't believe how excited I got.

I've since then abandoned the T'wolves and followed the Celtics religiously. I'm 24 now living on my own, not the depressed little musician kid anymore. Still loving the C's through and through. I feel like I grew up with the team. With Paul Pierce hitting that game winner against Harrington, Big Al Jefferson battling in the paint, Rondos rookie year, chasing other point guards, Chunky Perk, Delonte's tattoos piling up. Then the big trade for the big 3 happened. Championship. Coming up short a couple years after. And I'm still here. Still a fan. Overall a wonderful ride, and a ride I'm gonna be riding til the day I die.

That's my story.
Whats yours?

I became a casual Celtics fan in the 07/08 season. The reason why I became one or even wanted to support this team was because I wanted KG to finally win a championship (I will forever remember his face during the 04 WCF at the end) and because I was supporting a fellow Inglewoodian in Paul to win a championship. My family and some of my friends were calling me traitor during that time too because they were playing the Lakers and I was rooting really hard for the Celtics to win

I officially became full blown Celtics fan during the 2010 playoffs and never looked back.
I wasn't looking that much into the playoffs that season until a family friend was talking about Rondo and his game 4 against the Cavs. Rondo caught my attention then and I remember seeing Game 5 and 6 and hearing how shocked the NBA analysts were that the Celtics took down the Cavs. I liked that they were the underdogs and were doubted throughout the playoffs yet proved everyone wrong so I stuck with them.
After that series, I watched every single game and grew an attachment to the rest of the players, Doc and the overall history.

I'm ride or die with KG!

I was (am) a huge KG fan when he was in Minnesota, with him and Stephon Marbury. Huge fan, I mean as a kid I had a Minnesota Timberwolves bed spread in the middle of Indiana, during the hey day of the Indiana Pacers with Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose/Jermaine Oneal era.

When KG got traded to Boston, I changed my allegiance from the Timberwolves to the Celtics.

And also, bc of the fact that I loved the KG/Starbury duo in  Minny. I was admittedly giddy back in 09' when the C's signed Stephon...even though I knew KG wouldn't play again, I watched every game hoping he would suit up, and I'd get to see a Stephon/KG pick and roll alley-oop!

I was born and raised in the Philippines. Basketball is big.

This is mid to late 90's. Everyone was adoring MJ, Grant Hill, Penny, those names, I fell in live wuth Antoine Walker's game. The sight if a big man with handles, post moves and perimeter shooting kind of got in to me. I imitated his his game and his shimmy during rec league games.

Then Pierce came in and then I was in. But it was Toine who really brought me in here.if

Larry bird was the number one reason. And growing up in Charlotte in the late 70's and 80's we didn't have a team at that time so I picked the best team on the east coast. Who else could I like? The Hawks!?
I also loved the tradition and the "keep it in the family" ways of Red Auerbach. I loved the original Garden and the Parquet floor. One of my biggest regrets is never going to a game back then to see them. I loved the history and all the winning helped too.

My story begins with watching Saturday NBA Action at 3 pm during the 80's which was hosted by Quinito Henson here in the Philippines. Watched the bird-Magic rivalry and was hooked by the hardhat plays by the Celtics. I was not into the flashy plays by the lakers.

Now my son is growing up before my eyes wearing all Celtics. Playing like Larry Bird or KG. He's turning into a green monster just like me.

Maybe not the same route as alot of people, but I grew up an Atlantic Division fan.

From NYC. Watching Sprewell and Allan Houston on the Knicks, Iverson on the Sixers, Vince Carter on the Raptors, Kidd on the Nets, Pierce, Antione Walker, and Walter Mac on the Celtics. Good times

When I first starting have preference for the Celtics was when Pierce scored 50 on Lebron in 2006. Been a Pierce and Celtics fan ever since. And when Ray and KG came and won a title, boy that was the best High School graduation gift ever

Grew up in Los Angeles. I love the Celtics because of the color green! I am a diehard green-color guy. Oh and Paul Pierce too, one of the most underrated clutch players and decent iso plays at the end. He's a great role model to look up to!

And yes I get the hate from Laker fans here and there. But hey, Paul Pierce is a Californian right? Nothing wrong with liking a Californian right?  ;D

Believe it or not, the first basketball game I ever saw on tv was the Indiana state / Michigan state game. I was 7. Magic against Bird. As we all know, that game was amazing and told my dad that I was going to be an Indiana state fan because of Bird and dad told me that Bird was going pro to some team called the Boston Celtics. So, here I am 30+ years later

i like the color green too so there may be some subconscious as well, lol.  But i became a fan in 2008 after watching them in game 6 dismantle the Lakers.  Never grew up a big NBA fan, in fact I didnt like the Celtics very much becasue i thought Larry bird never missed a shot, and it became boreing, lol. But always despised LA and especially Kobe.  I loved the old school feel and the fact that Boston was back on top.  Just watching how they all worked together to achieve the goal then KG's anything is possible at the end about brought me to tears as we are the champions played in the background.  Just felt something in that moment and said, I like that team.  Didnt follow them much in 2009, then they made that run in 2010, and I thought man this team is really something else.  From the 2010 finals on I've been following the celtics like a diehard lol.  I'm on here, got my C's gear.  Never was like that with any other NBA team, and today, I'm proud to say I'm a Celtic:)

My sister who is 4 years older was a Yankees, Knicks, Rangers and Cowboy fan so naturally, I picked the  Redsox, Celtics, Bruins and Vikings- In the 70's, each arch enemy of her team, became my team and they were all chosen at 5 years old!

Fun times growing up in NY as a Boston fan especially back when they would lose everything in every sport but basketball. Thank God for the Celtics in my childhood though, great times watchin the teams from the 70's and 80's(especially the 80's).

Team association was not optional in my family.  Any son would have to root for Dad's teams.  Dad rooted for the Celtics, the Montreal Canadians, the New York Yankees, and the New York Giants.  These were all champion teams in the 1950's and 1960's when Dad choose his teams.  Once chosen though, he stayed loyal.  Mom told me once, don't talk to your Dad about anything on Sundays.  The New York Giants had a string of 10 - 12 years without a winning record, that included the 7-9 season where "the fumble" to the hated Philadelphia Eagles.  Thank goodness Lawrence Taylor came around when I was a teenager.
For the Celtics, my Dad passes on Russell, Cousy, Sharman, Nelson, Heinson 'Tommy Gunner', and the other classic Celtics.  I saw Cowens, Havlicheck, JoJo White, then Bird, McHale, Parish, DJ, Cornbread Maxwell, Ainge, and then Reggie Lewis, Paul Pierce, etc.
The only star my Dad was ambivalent about was Antoine Walker.  The only teams that were unlikeable were the "tanking" teams who had people like Curtis Rowe and Sidney Wicks traded in who though OK players were not really Celtics in their play.
So yes, Johnny Most was always objective:  we sometimes watched on NBC but turned off the sound and listened to Johnny on the radio.
Red Auerbach is a genius, and his choice of Ainge as "Mr. Lucky" was his last act of Genius.
And that Tommy Heinson once got a technical foul for just looking at a dirty low down referee endears him to our hearts forever.

Go Celtics.

Buddy got me hooked listening to Johnny Most radio broadcasts. Was Bill Russell’s first season as player-coach. (Season Wilt’s Sixers would win).

I’ve been a fan ever since, even though I moved back to NY in 1983.

In 1980, right as I was approaching my teen years.

I was transfixed at how this guy named Larry was head and shoulders above the players on the court and how he did INCREDIBLE things.

He was The Matrix before Shawn Marion was. The game seemed SLOW to him and it always seemed as if he was several steps ahead of everyone else.

Been a fan ever since.

My Sister was a big fan. She got me into the tail end of the Russell era. She even went to Dave Cowens basketball camp and I got to meet Cowens when we picked her up.  Those Cowens teams should've won at least 3 championships but Havlicek was injured one of those years.  Those 70's Celtics were so gritty. I also have some vivid memories of the balloon game. Those Russell teams were the 1st super teams. Just so much talent. If the League only had 20 teams now can you imagine how crazy these playoffs would be?

Well I live in California and when I was about 10 my brother would watch Laker games all the time and we only had 1 tv so I could never watch my shows. This is when I developed my hate for the Lakers. In 84 I was watching the Finals on tv with my brother and saw the Lakers playing the Celtics. Fell in love with the team right there and then. Loved the grit they showed. People always look at me funny with my Boston Celtics T on and ask if I'm from Boston and I say "No I'm just a California girl that bleeds green" I'm a wreck about tonight's game Go Celtics!

I was born and raised in Massachusetts, but honestly, I didn't really care for sports most of my life. Heck, I completely skipped out on those three Patriots Super Bowl wins because I just didn't care about or like sports. Watching the Celtics play in the 2008 season is what got me into it. After that I started watching the Pats as well, and now here we are.

I was a fan before but 1984 game 4 against the Lakers is when Celtic pride hit home. McHale closelines Rambo’s and guts and grit of that team then ML slamming home the the final nail saying “we’re coming back we’ll be back !!! “. That was Celtic pride , Boston Celtics basketball. I knew right then and there what Celtics pride was all about. I remember it like it was yesterday, I was 7 years old.

Blessed to be born Irish American (Catholic)  in the New England area. Not everyone is so perfect. I mean lucky. Further I was lucky enough that my childhood was filled with Bird.

And remember when someone calls you an entitled brat sports fan because you're from New England make sure to respond with "I am entitled."   Never run from being a small part of the greatest sports fandom and entities in the history of the universe.

I graduated HS in 1976 and had been a C's fan as far back as I could remember.  But it was the JoJo, Chaney, Hondo, Silas, Cowens Celtics that really made me feel like a true fan.  This was the team of my conscious childhood (the Russell years are a blur to me).    The C's-Suns triple OT game came on a night I was with friends -- we decided to listen to the end of the game as I drove my mother's station wagon to pick up some pizza (a bunch of guys who I haven't seen in 40 years).   We never made it into the pizza place.  We were riveted to the car and to Johnny Most for 3 overtimes.

Grew up in no man's land for professional sports with a family that didn't care about basketball. Started watching the Pierce/Walker Celtics and was hooked.

Came to United States in Fall of 1995 and didn't know much about basketball except a little about MJ. Didn't speak English but started getting a glimpse of C's towards the end of that season with Antoine Walker. I got really into them the next season, Pierces rookie season. It was easy getting into basketball since that was the only sport that I could understand and Americans weren't really into soccer. Still my biggest sport to root for (except for the World Cup which is in another level).

Basically I never knew the glory days until KG came in. Lots of years suffering but it was always fun to watch. I have always been a local sports guy so I was stuck with them and live it.

Bob Cousy's flash and Bill Russell's determination & cackle and Red Auerbach's feisty arrogance - favorite color has always been green (I am surprised how many other people said the color green).  Live in upstate New York - avoided the lifelong misery of being a knicks fan.

My dad occasionally got free tickets from work in the club section the first year the new garden opened in 95 when I was 7, and took me to a few games. Have been a die-hard fan ever since and been a season ticket holder since 2008.

Got into college basketball first in 1960 at the age of 9 and the Celtics around 1963. I did see Russell vs Wilt and both of them would have done well in any era, but Russell was the better player. My best sport was football, but basketball was by far mine and my family's favorite and I played into my early 50s before I decided that I wanted my knees to hold up.

Born & Raised in Malden, Ma. = Celtics fan for life. Even back in the 80's when it wasn't "cool" to be a black Celtics fan. lol

I think I already shared my story before, but here's again anyway: When I was ten years old, my father bought me a Bird's jersey (my first NBA jersey, no less), and he shared some stories about Larry Legend and the Celtics in general. In that moment I knew I wanted to be a fan of the best franchise in the NBA.

However, I'm from Argentina and back in those days, good luck if could catch an NBA game on TV. And when that happened, it was usually because the Bulls were playing (the most popular team by far, at the time). So it was hard to keep up feeding my fandom.

But then, a couple of years later, I got my first computer so with the help of Basketball games and the Internet I revived the love I had for the Celtics (starting during the Pitino era!) and kept growing to become what it is today: I watch all 82 games of the regular season + the postseason (if I missed one for whatever reason, I keep myself out of Twitter, sports TV and Celticsblog until I have the time to watch it); when we lose, it changes my day; when we win, it changes my week (unless there's a loss in the middle). You know, just like the rest of you.

To what extent are young black Bostonians still avoiding Celtics fandom?  It's only a singular anecdote, so I don't want to draw conclusions, but earlier this year I was in a high school just outside of Boston and was talking with a small group of students (probably 3 or 4) -- all were African-American.  I asked if they were Celtics fans and all shook their heads "no" -- one said "never".   It wasn't a situation where I could get into why.

My dad (R.I.P.) was the biggest Celtic fan I’ve ever seen, it was passed down on me from day one. Insisted on having the game on the tv in the hospital when I was born. God bless that man for teaching me about the history of this team and showing me the culture. Watching them win in 2008 was the greatest moment I ever shared with him.

Grew up in SW Ohio and the team I played for in the local community league was the Celtics. That simple. I was 10 years old Bird’s rookie year, so the formative years of my fandom lined up perfectly with the Big 3.

I shudder to think what might have been if my team had worn purple and yellow.

Back 7 years ago, I saw an entire basketball playoff series Throwback with Bird, Mchale, and Parish. I decided to stick with it because they were the only basketball team I knew. I soon started to watch a bit more Celtic games and started to get more involved with them. Whenever I saw them on TV, I rooted for them. However, as soon as I heard that B.S. was the new coach for the Celtics, I started to hone into the Celtics 24/7, especially seeing that Stevens was a great coach in the NCAA. I did this hoping that he would do something crazy for the team (we sucked right after the Brooklyn Trade). Of course, things have changed from 4-5 years ago, and we are almost seeing this team in the NBA finals! That's just a small story for me.

Tried to follow b-ball for years.  Couldn’t get into a team.  Kinda liked Detroit but more because they were beating the lakers which I hated.  Watched the finals in 2008...game 5...the drama, the comeback and the fact that they were beating the lakers.  I always pulled for the underdog and the team concept and in that game that’s what the Celtics embodied. Watched game 6 and how that team galvanized but when KG  broke down and said anything is possible as We are the champions played in the background..with a tear in my eye...and lump in my throat....I said... this is my team!  Proudly, I haven’t looked back since :D

49 yrs ago a 5 yr old kid got a nerf basketball set for X-mas.  One backboard was NY Knicks the other was Boston Celtics.  Being that my last name is Green I would always shoot at the green & whtte backboard when my friends and I would play full court in my room. The birth of being a Celtic fan began!

I've always lived in Texas.  Became a Celtics fan around 14 or 15 watching the Bill Russell led Celtics (at least I think Bill was on the team then) so I've been a fan for about 54 years.  The Cowens and Jo Jo White eras were great too.

Hope Celtics keep James out of another Finals...
