Title: Poll: Would you trade Pierce for Gay?
Post by: ssspence on January 25, 2013, 08:00:28 PM
While Memphis has accomplished getting under the tax line, it's clear they're still open to trading Rudy Gay. A guy like Pierce allows them to take a crack at a title this year, yet have flexibility for the future. Gay's got lumps, but is 10 years younger. So... would you trade them straight up?

Absolutely. I'd love for this to happen.

Nah. He's not worth that money. He will cripple your salary cap. Pierce to Gay is a downgrade.

You don't pay guys nearly 20 mill a year when they're not even a top 20 player.

Is Pierce a Top 20 player? Combined, Green and Bass = roughly Rudy Gay.. which would you rather have?

The Cs are, by NBA standards, a big market team. Gay's far from perfect, and his deal has always been too big, but i think dismissing him based on contract alone is wasteful.

Moreover, the Cs aren't going to have **** for cap room over the next two years. So I'm not sure why I care about his salary if he's a meaningful long term upgrade that will keep Rondo pumped.

We are paying PP at the same amount. And if PP doesn't improve his play I don't think Gay would be a down grade. At least he may not fumble the ball out of bounds at the end of the game.

There's a reason the Grizz are looking to move Gay.

Tying up that much of your cap in a player like Rudy Gay just doesn't make that much sense.

agree and in situations like miami heat the experienced we need is on pierce, gay can hit 3points but pierce has the veteran experienced at his age when he scored 40 points? man what can i say, he deserves to be one of those hall of famers

Gay is an above average guy who has an All-Star game here an then. I don't know if I would do it.

Y E S.    I have had it with The Captain... He needs to come off the bench  to be honest

We should trade paul pierce and not make the same mistake with ray...losing him for nothing is the worst thing you could possibly hope for...his legacy in Boston will not be tarnished and he will forever be appreciated but its time to move on...again if he cant be traded then sit him or bring him off thr bench and play him an efficient 25 min a game.

Nope.

While a very talented player, no way that Gay leads BOS deep into the playoffs.

I'd rather keep the wily, playoff-tested, clutch veteran in Paul Pierce.

It's not Pierce's fault, Rondo's or KG's as the reason why we're losing.

As much as I like Brandon Bass, he just hasn't given us much, unfortunately.

KG is getting beat up inside...Rudy Gay won't help that.

Let The Captain retire as a Boston Celtic.

Pierce is such a better play maker, a much better shooter, more efficient scorer, and probably still a better defender at this point.

This shouldn't even be a discussion, let alone a 50/50 vote.  Who the heck wants to start 3 slashers?!  But hey, maybe he''ll get hurt and then our team will start playing better!

I voted No, and not because I don't think PP should be traded, I think that he should.

Next to RR, PP is our most valuable asset, both for his play and his contract.

I think that the two LA teams are our best potential trade partners. I'm sure that there might be others, but they are not jumping out at me at the moment.

We either need to get a big back for him (like Gasol)or  a package of a young stud like Bledsoe, expirings and picks.

I'd prefer the former for the present, but would take the latter for the future.

Again, I simply don't follow this logic. The Cs have no cap space. If they simply cut Pierce in the offseason, there will be no cap room created in the process. This is the reason the Ca overpaid for guys like Bass and Green in the offseason -- the alternative was min contracts.

My question was really related more to Gay the player than Gay the contract. I'm not sure the Ca could get more for Pierce from other logical spots like the Clippers.

The only reason I see for not making this deal is that you want Pierce to retire a Celtic.

This team does not look like they are going to compete for a title right now, if that is the case we need to make move that could help us in the future. This is one such move.

I think that's fair, unless there's a better one out there. That Gay and Rondo are friends doesn't hurt either, considering a grumpy Rondo disinterested in a true rebuild would be a less valuable Rondo.

Pierce for Gay straight up makes sense for both teams.  I have thought this for the last couple of years. Effectively,  the c's are paying about 26 mil this year at the small forward position (green,  pierce). Pierce is paid like a Max player, but he requires a 10 mil backup.  Get Gay and there is no need for green.  Gay can play the entire game effectively.

Additionally,  Gay is better than Josh Smith.  Smith is going to want Max money.  If I am paying the Max for a b+ player,  I would rather spend it on Gay.  Plus he is friend if Rondo too. That will help with the transition

Stupid. You complain about Green's inconsistency and now you want Gay?  Pierce is still way better than Gay even in his slump.

Nice to meet you too -- welcome to the blog.

Where did I call Green inconsistent? He's not - he's consistently bad, thus my tongue-in-cheek thread about his inability to focus long enough to net 20 pts in a single game this year.

As for your fantasy about Pierce being way better than Gay, I think you're missing the point: if the Cs don't trade Pierce this season, there's not likely to be any Gay OR Pierce OR any player of value in return for him on the Celtics roster.

I'm looking at one viable option. Gay may not be the best Ainge can get for Pierce, but he also may be.

I'm sorry, that wasn't directed to you, and thanks for the welcome.

Pierce is an expiring contract that Memphis may want, but I don't think Pierce is gonna go, who knows! Last year, we tried.

I think Gay is a poor player who chucks still, and if anyone, we should trade for Gasol, but that's unlikely too.

Green can be a starting SF in the future, and Gay will only block Greens development for the third time in his career.

What message would that send Rondo? The one telling him to move to a better franchise like San Antonio which respects its vets.

Bro, this is a business. Rondo has already been on the trading block himself and he knows this is a business. You can't worry about personal feelings you have to do what's best for the team point blank period.

U need to watch more Memphis games. Just comparing stats won't give u the complete story.  I see where other people make similar comments. Making that statement is overrating Jeff green,  and under rating Gay.  They both have similar personalities,  but that's it.  Neither has pierces "no matter what u think I am the best player in the league" attitude. They both try to fit into a team and that's their biggest fault.  From a skill comparison Gay can do it all whereas I see green as a good player with an incomplete offensive game.  He has a very limited mid range game.  It's either long jumper or drive directly to hoop.  No pull up. He also is weak handling the ball.  If Gay played with Rondo,  his passive nature would not be an issue.  Because of their friendship,  i think Rondo would bring the best out of him

Rondo would be happy to have Gay traded to the Cs. As for a message, one I'd love the Cs to get across to him somehow (though I don't think trading Pierce would really provide):

Play hard all the time, not just when you feel like it, or we'll trade you to Milwaukee or Indiana or somewhere else you don't wanna go.

Letting Pierce retire and leave for nothing is great for sentimental reasons. However it doesn't help us in the future. After thinking about it I believe cap space might be overrated to the extent we would be better off acquiring Gay as another asset for trade down the line.

I was going to make a new thread but I may as well bump this one. There are some lingering rumors about Memphis interest in Pierce. After the Rondo news we can all sort of take a sober look at this. Here is my perspective.

Pierce for Gay helps Memphis more than it helps us I think. Gay isn't a wow player, his stats are underwhelming for his usage and his salary is way over what he's worth. Pierce is a more efficient player and he's huge cap relief next season. I'd trade Pierce for Gay if we can shed a smaller contract like Bass along with him. Something like:

Pierce/Bass
for
Gay/Wroten/Leuer

That trade probably overvalues Pierce's cap space to the Griz but a small market team being over the cap for consecutive seasons can be really expensive. I don't think we should be in a rush to trade Pierce unless the right deal comes around. If Memphis wants to get under the cap we should make them pay with a prospect like Wroten and taking on Bass's deal.

Another option is the pitch the Dream Team idea to Sam Presti. Take Pierce on a 1-year, Garnett agrees to the trade and we get back Martin/Perk/Lamb/PJIII and Toronto's pick.. That is a lot to ask but it puts Oklahoma City in great shape salary wise and makes them the odds on favorite to win this season...and probably next if Garnett doesn't retire. The deal is essentially that they upgrade from Perkins to Garnett and give up 2 pretty promising prospects and a pick from a garbage draft (4-14 in 2013).

The upside for us is a ton of rebuilding blocks, cap space and Perk being back in Green. I know he's overpaid but I just love Perk.

Obviously I'm asking a ton in these trades but the premise is that we're not dying to trade people and we should only make a move if the right deal comes along.

Great post!  I was about to post a similar idea where pierce goes to Memphis fir gay and wroten, but I like your idea of throwing bass in to shed salary for the c's. I think that's too much to ask from Memphis,  but not a bad idea.  I see wroten as a talented player the c's could bring along slowly. I don't envision him as an immediate Rondo replacement

Thanks :) I had another idea about moving Terry to the Griz instead of Bass because I've heard a number of times they are in desperate need of 3pt shooters.

Pierce/Terry/Barbosa
for
Gay/Allen/Wroten

Don't know if the Grizzlies go for it but it's worth a try.

I would do Pierce for Gay but I'd rather do;

Boston sends Pierce for Zac Randolph

Memphis sends Gay to LA for Pau Gasol.

Memphis has the Gasol brothers in the paint, with Pierce
at SF= serious cnotender.

We can start Green at the 3, with KG and Zeebo inside.
Rondo comes back and we have a starting 5 of

KG
Zeebo
Green
Bradley
Rondo

done and done.

Rudy Gay is not worth the money he's making.  He's averaging 17 ppg and just less than 6 boards, 6 boards!  He's not going to help you much.  He's only shooting 41% from the field also.  He makes over 16 million per year now and the # goes up to over 19 million in 2 years!  No way do you make that trade unless you want to be average.

If you want to go purely by stats you could say KG is not worth the money he's making his entire stay in Boston.  Gay has talent, but there's a lot of talent in MEM so the stats get distributed.

Why do you think 6 rebounds is bad for a SF?

Anyways I doubt this deal happens.

I doubt most of you, who are bashing Gay have actually seen him play consistently. Stats don't always tell the story. Gay plays in a system that is centered on low post offense. Gay is a solid NBA player. He may not be a superstar but how many superstars are there in the league?

I think trading Pierce for Gay is a steal. Memphis cap situation is ripe for a deal such as this. It is a situation that doesn't always come around and the C's must take advantage of it.

Pierce doesn't have much longer and if Danny has a chance to trade him for a younger comparable player, who has the potential to get better, you have to pull the trigger. The way free agency is going now, there is no guarantee that we will be in position to get a superstar or if there will even be a superstar to get for that matter.

Gay gives us an asset! He doesn't have to be the MAN! He's just a piece of the puzzle. Gay could be the 1st guy added to the new big 3. We should look at it in those terms. I think he could fit in a Pierce role with two other guys helping carrying the load just like Allen and Garnett did.

We do have assets in Bradley, Sullinger and to a degree Green and Lee, depending on what a team needs are. We could possibly trade a combination of those guys for the 3rd member of the new Big 3.

Overall in the big picture Gay's addition would be great for the C's. Danny Ainge job is to ensure that the C's are prepared to move forward in the now and in the future and Gay helps with the now and the future.

No, no you couldn't. Stats show his defense is top 10 in the league. Maybe not box score stats but the more complex metrics do.

Don't think many of us think Gay is bad. The biggest criticism of him is his salary. He's not a max player pretty much any way you look @ him. I am 100% behind the trade. I also think he's overpaid.

Pierce and Bass to Clippers
Odom,Butler and filler to Grizzlies
Gay and Bledsoe to Celtics

Clippers lose their backup PG that would've left at the end of the season, but gain a playoff proven closer and solid scoring PF for their system lacking shooting bigs.

Memphis save 8 mil next year, and another 16 the following, while getting picks from Boston.

Bledsoe fills the role of Rondo until a return, and either replaces him entirely or becomes trade bait.
Gay becomes the franchise SF and shows how athleticism with a strong PG can keep this team in contention and/or at least entertaining to watch

You're right, KG shows nicely in the stats.

I think after yesterday's game people are ready to move JG to the PF slot.  But Miami is an anomaly and Green is much better at the 3.  So even after Pierce goes, frontline 3 is not a position of need--which is one more reason to get involved in the Gay deal only if it's a three way thing and needs a pick or other asset sweetener.

I voted no because Gay doesn't make Boston a contender (but improves them) and his salary is bigger and longer and thus more of a problem for flexibility.

I dont see how trading Pierce for Gay improves Boston. Maybe for the long term you can say its possible but then you're dealing with a long max contract.

Pierce is down to 42% shooting and 35% from three but averaging 18.7 points 6 boards and 4 assists per game. Not so great in the shooting department...

At the max, Rudy is at 40% shooting and 30% from three! Also averagin less assists about the same rebounds and the same amount of steals and turnovers.

Pierce is having a better year than Gay. And even though he has lost a step he is still a clutch performer who happens to be in a current funk of sorts. Also, Gay is younger and would be able to play more minutes, taking even more minutes away from Jeff Green.

I dont see how that makes us better with Rudy instead of Pierce

Rudy Gay is having his worse half season since his rookie year. I don't think calling him a 40% shooter is fair, he's been far better the rest of his career.

It is clear that he doesn't fit with Memphis and how they run things now.

I dont think calling Pierce a 42% shooter is fair either but currently thats what he is.

a 42% shooter this season, not for his career. Just like Gay its not fair to either player to use those numbers as a predictor of future performance. Shooting percentages fluctuate a lot year to year for players.

With the caveat is that Gay is in his prime, Pierce shouldn't be expected to match his overall career numbers because of his age going forward.

A straight up Pierce for Gay trade would be the best case scenario in terms of return value. I'd absolutely do it.

That said, I don't think Memphis would and I think the Celts pretty much stand pat.

We just beat Miami without Rondo. We beat the Knicks without him. We beat OKC this year (best record in the league). Let's give it 5 games and see how the chemistry looks.

I think Ainge will give it at least 5 at this point, while working the phones to keep his options open.

The question is simple: can the Cs beat each of those three teams 4 times in 7 games each.... in a row? It seems pretty dubious, but it's interesting to see how well they've played without Rondo.

So trade Pierce for a guy making 18m next year and 19.5m the year after that?

A guy who is ranked 86th in efficiency rating (Pierce is 43rd)?

Who has a PER of 14 this season?  (Pierce 18.5)

Who is currently worth about .081 Win Shares / 48?  (Pierce is worth 50% more.)

Who's career comparable is Keith Van Horn?

What's the upside here?  We're worse this year ... then we get to shell out max money for Gay for 2 more years where he can play slightly above average (if we're lucky)?

No thanks.

Pierce should retire a Celtic

Comments like this make me sick to my stomach. You people have to look at the bigger picture and not the one that means absolutely nothing.

Pierces number will be hung regardless and always be remembered. He doesn't need to retire a celtic for that to happen, it means nothing.

Particularly now that Rondo is out, trading Pierce for Gay would make us worse for this season.  We need the Captain to handle the ball and play point forward from here on out.  I don't think that's a role that Gay can play.

As for the future, I'm not sure that I like Gay's very large contract as a part of building the next phase of the Boston Celtics.

I think you guys are missing the point here. There's a third option besides "trade" or "retirement", which is "cut".

If the Cs don't trade Pierce -- either before the deadline or before the draft -- there's a strong chance they'd simply terminate his deal this summer. And then you get nothing for Pierce, and he retires somewhere else.
