Rivers also holds the Hawks record for most assists in a career as a Hawk (3,866)
Celtics Assistant Coach Armond Hill played for the Hawks from 1976-80 and also during the 1983-84 season
Hawks Assistant Coach Lester Conner was an Assistant Coach with the Celtics from 1998-2004
Jason Collins played for Atlanta from 2009-12
Courtney Lee and Devin Harris were teammates in New Jersey during the 2008-09 season
Jason Terry and Devin Harris were teammates in Dallas from 2004-08
DeShawn Stevenson and Jason Terry were teammates in Dallas from 2009-11

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/BassBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/atlanta/JSmithAtl.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs Josh Smith
Smith is a very athletic and quick power forward and  Brandon must box out and keep Smith off the boards along with slowing him down on offense.  Smith is an average defender, though and so Bass should be able to get his shot off, although Bass hasn't been looking for his shot all that much.    Smith is averaging 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game so Bass will need to be aggressive on defense to keep Smith from having a big game.  Smith is coming off a 30 point night in a win over  the Bobcats.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/atlanta/TeagueAtl.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Jeff Teague
Teague is a good point guard and is averaging 13.2 points and 6.7 assists per game.  Both are quick and both see the court well and so this should be a fun matchup to watch.  Rondo is coming off yet another triple double vs the Knicks.  Hopefully he brings that same aggression to this game.

Honorable Mention
Kevin Garnett vs Ivan Johnson
With KG's move back to center, he will be matched up with Ivan Johnson,  who is a very tough and physical player.    KG is playing the second night in a row and so it would be great if Wilcox would finally be back.

Game Notes

The Celtics travel to Atlanta to take on the Hawks in the second of 4 meetings this season.   The Celtics are  in the midst of a 5 game losing streak and after going 3 games above .500 and are now back to 2 games under .500.  The Celtics are playing in the second of back to back games.  The Hawks have a day of rest.

Boston won the series 2-1 last season but all 3 games were close.  The Celtics won by 3 points and by 2 points in overtime while the Hawks won their game by 5.  Every game between these two teams seems to end up being chippy.  There is no love lost between them, that is for sure.   The Celtics won the first meeting in Atlanta 89-81.

The Hawks have several players who have been out injured.  3 are listed as game time decisions:  Harris, Horford and Pachulia.  Morrow and Lou Williams are out.  Williams torched the Celtics for 28 points in their first meeting.   It will definitely be easier if Horford and Pachulia are out, but players have a way of coming back just in time to play the Celtics.

The Hawks are a good home team with a 14-7 record at Phillips Arena.  The Celtics have been the opposite on the road with a 7-13 record away from the Garden.  The Celtics are now 5-5 in their last 10 games while the Hawks are 4-6 in their last 10, mostly due to a flurry of injuries.

Atlanta is in the 6th spot in the East, 4 games ahead of the Celtics, who are still in 8th, in spite of the 5 game losing streak.

Keys to the Game

Defense -  Defense is key to every win.  The Celtics need to play tough team defense.  The Celtics are capable of playing that type of defense but they are very inconsistent?   They have to guard the perimeter as the Hawks have good 3 point shooters like Korver who can kill a team from out there.   They also have to defend the paint because players like Smith, Horford and Johnson can get to the hoop and score there, especially on tip ins.

Rebound - The Celtics must make an effort to go after rebounds.  They must box out and prevent tip ins and to prevent the Hawks from getting second chance baskets.  The Hawks are a good rebounding team, but not great.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to go after rebounds and loose balls.  They must be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers.  They also have to be aggressive on defense and get stops. We saw all of this in the Pacers game.  Hopefully they will bring it again in this game.

Find The Offense -   The Celtics haven't been shooting the ball well at all.  Pierce's shot has no arc on it.   KG has been shooting a terrible percentage.   Jason Terry hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn.   Bass has been very passive and hasn't looked for his shot this season.  Jeff Green is very streaking and inconsistent.   Every one of those players must somehow shake off their slumps and find their shot.   They shot just 40% against the Knicks and a pitiful 16% from beyond the arc.  If those shots aren't falling they MUST go to the hoop and not continue to settle for jumpers.

X-Factor
Back to Back on the Road vs Desperation
The Celtics are playing in back to back games and are on the road.   This usually isn't a formula for success.  But facing a 6 game losing streak should have them feeling a bit desperate and that might give them just enough to pull out the win.

Good luck C's. Hope Rondo can convince J-Smoove to continue making poor decisions. Hopefully this is a momentum builder going into Sunday.

and did they just call that green drive a charge ? Harris was still moving, announcer calling it like it wasn't completely obvious.

i swear we have more fans in atlanta than the hawks do

Atlanta is a horrible NBA town. They really don't care. They love their Falcons and their Braves and I guess since Atlanta never fields a team capable of going to the Finals people don't care.

The only way Basketball will Really ever be relevant in Atlanta is if they get a true superstar who "puts on a show".

Tim Duncan, alone, for example wouldn't cut it. They need a Big Name like Kobe or LeBron.

That's why it's funny watching Ferry go the cap space route because it won't work.

I don't... but I liked the shot selection, taking it to the hoop. So in that regard, I'll welcome it. But I really haven't seen much success from him converting on contested layups, and he won't give you a good pull up attempt I reckon if needed.

It always amazes me when people lump Lee in the struggling list... He's been fantastic for a while now.

I think people can't get the first few weeks of the season out of their mind.  I agree he has been great over the last 4-6 weeks.  I think he has found his role.  I hope we can hang onto him.

I tune in at the half and this happens.

For someone as supposedly as smart as Rondo is, he sure is pretty Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ing stupid sometimes.  Walking the ball up the court and getting in the half court offense, letting their defense set up, spending 15 seconds just sitting at the top of the key.  On the other side of the ball they are blitzing down the court and getting wide open layups and 3 point shots.

What a freaking joke.

this is what happens when you put the starters back in when the bench was kicking butt. this comeback started in the 2nd quarter when we benched lee and green when they were leading the onslaught.

this. And then start playing like the game is over, with the lazy fancy passes.

Go Celtics!

How do we let a 19-0 run go and call only one timeout in the process?

Coaching on this team drives me nuts

Really COACHING? I say effort.

Rondo sits in the paint doing nothing while Terry tries to cover two three point shooters at the top of the key.

Rondo's lack of effort single handedly is losing this game.

i don't know if its rondo, or the (old) guys he's usually running with. but when we had the younger guys in there, we were running, getting easy shots, and had a 27 point lead. maybe its rondo. but its not like he can play fast when his teammates are trotting up the court.

Our "old guys" were getting up the court and waiting for Rondo as he casually walked the ball up with no interest in hustling and actually running like any idiot would realize he needed to do.

I cant remember ever seeing a team give up a 19 point lead in 6 minutes.

I was out and recorded the game. When I got home, a little tired, I said to my wife: forget it, I am not even going to watch the first half, I cant take another half of bad play. So I turn on the game live, coming out of the half with the 19 point lead. I laugh...of course, the night I actually skip a half they dominate.

Then I say: of course, they will now blow the 19 point lead and be losing by the 4th.

Dear Basketball Gods: it was just a sarcastic joke after the last five ridiculous losses. I get the point, now stop messing with me.

Rondo still walking the ball up the court.  Gotten bailed out by some lucky breaks/missed defensive assignments/jumpers falling.  But that won't last the rest of the game.  If we don't get easy looks in transition we are going to lose.

People wonder why we break down on offense.  It's because Rondo chooses to make the offense painstakingly easy instead of just sprinting up court for easy layups.  That's why the Heat have mediocre shooters in Wade and Lebron and still have a much better offense than us.

Very impressive win by the Bruins tonight.  There was even a Dougie chant at the end.  This team should be fun to watch this year.

Hey, look at that, the C's actually back out in front.  Just as I turn back I'm sure they'll blow it.  I must be begging for tortue.

And there it is, Korver for three.

SMH!

Time for you to watch Bruins postgame.

Korver is killing us.  We could use a player like that.

Sure would have been nice if we used our MLE on a guy like him instead of Shaq, Jermaine, Rasheed the past few years.

Imagine the lineup with Rondo-Ray-Korver-Pierce-KG

That's some insane spacing and shooting to give Rondo.  That would have been beautiful to watch.  Defense would be a bit iffy, but prior to last year and a half Ray was a very underrated defender.

How do you let a 19 point lead go to waste? Then how do you lose a 9 point lead when it mattered the most in the fourth?
Why can't they play consistently for 48 minutes?

I think Doc is trying to make a point -- that PP can't go for 38 minutes a night anymore -- and he'll have a lot of evidence when he sits him down this week to discuss a possible move to 6th man.

Let's see. Weak perimeter D. Check. not guarding the rim. Check.  Not attacking the rim. Check. Over-relient on (weak) exterior shooting. Check. Not taking care of the ball check.

I read the piece about riding it out and hoping for the best in the playoffs. I hear the logic, but....

Doc doesn't deserve to be fired..he'll just collect his paycheck and chill in Orlando.  Maybe moonlight a little for TNT.

He should be sent to the D'league to coach.  Red Claws, here you come Doc.

This is a rock bottom game no doubt. It's gonna be interesting to see who's gone before the trade deadline.

hopefully GLENN RIVERS is one of them.

Doc isn't going anywhere.

HOT GARBAGE. TRASH. that is what this coach and team are right now.

Not once have I ever been an advocate for blowing this team up.

Just can't fight it anymore.

I'd rather see them forfiet the remainder of their games, then continue down this road.

Up 27 and 19 at half and you lose.

I guess they really just don't have what it takes to play 48 minutes anymore.

This mess is embarrassing.
I just have to laugh right now at how they can lose a 27 point lead and a 19 point lead at halftime then they lose a 9 point lead 4 minutes left of the fourth quarter.

Some people need to go or they need to just save the embarrassment of getting spanked in the playoffs and just take an early vacation.

Doc isn't doing his job, but:

1. This is still mostly on the players; and

2. I wouldn't expect a new coach to make much of a difference.

Let's hurry up and rebuild so that we might have a team good enough to reach the second round.

To those calling for a rebuild, don't expect another 2007 worst-to-first scenario.  Rebuilding is going to be long, brutal, and ultimately, probably won't be successful.

I'm not sure if you were around for the 2007 season, but almost everyone was rooting for the team to lose.  Cheering for lottery balls, rather than the team on the floor, is less fun than it sounds.

And yes, rebuilding is almost always unsuccessful.  Unless you're blessed with a high lottery pick in a good draft who blossoms into a superstar, you're generally going to be screwed.

But you can want it or not: to win again you have to start this process... It's the only way, how long we can count on kg and pp?

Most likely scenario: you stuck with this team one or two years THEN you have to rebuild? Do you prefer?
