Title: The Hawks have suspended Josh Smith for one game
Post by: crownontherocks on January 16, 2013, 11:26:24 AM
The Hawks have suspended Josh Smith for one game and he will not play on Wednesday.
Smith was fined and suspended for conduct detrimental to the team and the Hawks are providing no other explanation. He will not play on Wednesday as a result, meaning that Zaza Pachulia could slide into the starting lineup in place of Smith. Smith was reportedly kicked out of practice on Tuesday, which led to his suspension. Larry Drew promised to shake things up, but this comes completely out of the blue. Smith has apologized in a statement and is expected to be back after his brief suspension.

I hope Josh Smith leaves Atlanta this summer. I am really fed up that team + I would love to see Josh Smith play under a top quality coach in a good situation.

I am ready for that Atlanta + Josh Smith marriage to end.

I think Josh Smith will go wherever the money is. If that is Atlanta, it's Atlanta. If it's somewhere else, it'll be somewhere else. He'll follow the money.

Atlanta can offer him more than anyone else with that extra year. I wouldn't rule the Hawks out. I think they still have a better than fair chance of keeping Josh Smith.

I hope they don't though. Like I said, I am fed up of this Hawks team.

Edit: Sorry, to be more clear -- with Josh Smith able to earn $20 million a year, I don't know if he'll be a guy with multiple offers on the table for max money. $20 million a year is more than a bit pricey for a player like Josh Smith. And with Atlanta able to offer that extra year, even if others do offer him max money, they can still out-bid any and every offer. Why I think they have a better than 50-50 shot at keeping him despite the warning signs.

I actually think the Lakers and Hawks are on a crash course for a trade.  And I think what it might end up being is Howard going to Atlanta for Horford, when the Lakers see the writing on the wall and realize Howard is not staying this summer.

Hope the Hawks doesnt do like Toronto and Phoenix did..let there superstar walk for nothing (Bosh and Amare) Both said they probably wouldnt resign and they didnt..No way Smith will resign with Atlanta..they better trade him for something

Horford would be brilliant with Pau Gasol ... and Steve Nash and even Kobe Bryant.

Horford would really help bring that team together in ways that Dwight Howard cannot do offensively with his (Horford) jump-shooting, passing and overall high post play. In addition to his other assets. The Lakers would get so much more out of Pau Gasol.

A Horford, Pau, Nash and Kobe > Dwight, Kobe, Nash and Pau foursome

Still, I hate the trade. It's a massive loss in terms of individual talent (Dwight to Horford). I'd have to be very worried about Dwight leaving ... not to the roll the dice on him staying during free agency this summer.

I was thinking somethikng similar except Howard for Smith.   maybe broaden it to Howard/Gasol for Horford/Smith/Pachulia.  not sure the $ works and that would be a major shakeup for both teams but it would clear the discontent in LA and still fibe atlanta that foundation player they really need

The problem is, Smith is the lure for Howard.  Smith and Howard are buddies, and the Hawks are holding on to Smith in the hopes of luring Howard and Paul this summer to Atlanta.

For this reason, I think there is very little chance Smith is traded anywhere this season, unless Howard and Paul come off the table somehow.

But, if Howard tells LA that he isn't going to resign (or they see the writing on the wall), they could just decide to blow it up, and run with Horford.

I seriously feel Josh Smith is not worth the hassle.

I had expected him to make a significant leap to the next level after they traded away Joe Johnson, but it hasn't happened.

Atlanta was really high on Fab Melo during the pre-draft workouts. Boston picked 1 slot ahead of Atlanta and took Fab Melo. It was Danny using his leverage for a potential (long-shot) Josh Smith trade.

I bet danny atleast makes a phone to see what it will take

I see where you're coming from on the Smith/Howard connection.  if anything, I think the more likely scenario is LA moving Gasol and pieces to Atlanta for Smith.   I don't see the appeal for Atlanta to do that deal and I don't think LA would take Horford for Howard (even if say Teague and/or Pachulia were thrown in)

Yeah, I think the Gasol deal makes a ton of sense, but won't happen as long as Howard and Paul are free agents this summer.  Could be an interesting sign and trade this summer though (I forget, do the new sign and trade rules for teams in the tax kick in this summer, or next?).

As far as Horford for Howard, I think that only happens if the Lakers hand is forced.  If Howard basically tells them that he is walking, then a Horford/Teague package would be hard to beat.  But if Howard continues sitting on the fence, you are right, they will just wait it out.

Right.  The question is, whether the Lakers management are as big suckers as the Magic were.

Yeah, if Atlanta believes they have a real shot at Howard with Josh Smith in the fold, I also doubt they make any Smith trade.

Such a huge longshot though.

And no way does LA consider a Horford for Dwight swap.

I hope the Cs stay away from this mess. I've never been a big fan of Smith's. He is a headcase who love to shoot to many jump shots.

I expect the Mavs and Lakers to be all over this. I dont think the Mavs have much to offer. The lakers could try to sell ATL on a trade built around Gasol. Not great for the future but Horford would get to play more PF if Pau joins the team. The lakers then have to sell Smith and Dwight aout staying with kobe.

He is a head case.  And he does shoot too many jumpshots.

But he is exactly what the C's need to solidify the team on an elite level.  If you add a (committed) Josh Smith at PF to Rondo, Bradley, Pierce, and Garnett, that might be the best defensive team Boston has had in a long, long time.

That team would be the best defensive squad we've had in the KG era.

People get so caught up in Josh Smith's jumpshooting, they gloss over all of the other great things he does. He can score, he rebounds, he can pass - actually,  his ability to read the defense and pass the ball is constantly underrated - and he can block shots. I'd love to see KG play next to an elite shotblocker like Josh some day.

At this point, I'd rather not touch our team and wait and see if perhaps we could get him this summer.

If he doesn't somehow land in BOS, I'd hope he goes to HOU.

C - Asik
PF - J Smith
SF - Parsons
SG - Harden
PG - Lin

Bench: Royce White (Hopefully), Patrick Patterson, Dequan Cook.

He'd propel HOU well into the playoffs...I'm not sure how they'd do vs OKC, MEM, or Spurs, but that would be a nice lineup, IMO.

At this point, though, I'm thinking he wants Banners, which leaves BOS (Somehow) or the Lakers.

I don't see how he'd like LA, though..I'm not sure if any combination of talent that the Lakers trade for can get them past OKC. Even with Smith, I don't see how they contain Westbrook or Durant.

The Grizzlies make sense.  Memphis is apparently shopping Gay, and Atlanta is incredibly thin at the SF spot.

Dallas would have to be a free agent destination.  I'm not sure what they could offer that the Hawks would want.

Houston could try to send all those rookies to the Hawks.  That'd be a waste of Al Horford's career though, so if they trade with the Rockets, Atlanta would probably need to trade Horford (and maybe Teague) too.

Josh Smith's agent spoke with Danny Ferry on Wednesday to discuss his client's "frustration" with the Atlanta Hawks' recent spiral.

"As far as moving forward and whatever changes will be made, that's more so management's job to field those calls and make the decisions they feel like are best to move forward," Smith's agent, Wallace Prather, told CBSSports.com.

Prather stopped short of requesting a trade.

Smith will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

The Hawks have conducted trade talks centered on Smith with multiple teams, according to NBA executives.

Smith is athletic enough to play the 3, but your point is valid.

I'm not a big fan of Smith, but his versatility is fascinating,  if we could pull a trade for him that sent away Green, I'd be okay with it because when Pierce goes out, Smith can slide over to the SF position and still give us production.

Suspensions don't mean much unless Mark Cuban owns the team.
