Team Connections

Avery Bradley and Hornets Head Trainer Jon Ishop both attended the University of Texas
Brandon Bass was drafted by the Hornets with the 33rd pick in the 2005 NBA Draft and played for them from 2005-07
Bass and Ryan Anderson were teammates in Orlando from 2009-11
Jason Collins and Robin Lopez both attended Stanford
Paul Pierce and Xavier Henry attended Kansas
Rajon Rondo, Anthony Davis and Darius Miller all attended Kentucky
Chris Wilcox and Greivis Vazquez went to Maryland
Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers is the father of Austin Rivers
Leandro Barbosa and Robin Lopez were teammates in Phoenix during the 2009-10 season.

Game Notes
Doc Rivers will have his first shot at coaching against his son Austin as the Celtics host the New Orleans Hornets.   The Hornets are coming in off a win over the Sixers on Tuesday night.  The Celtics are looking to extend their win streak to a season high 7 games.   Both teams are 6-4 in their last 10 games.  The Celtics are 13-6 at home while the Hornets are 6-13 on the road.

The Hornets have been inconsistent and have been dealing with injuries, but they are healthy and finally finding some consistency.  They are coming off a 111-99  road win over the Sixers and it wouldn't be a good idea for the Celtics to underestimate them.   As much as Doc wants his son to succeed,  he needs to do his best in this game to keep him from doing so.  It will certainly be a tough game for Doc as both a coach and a dad.

Key Matchups

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4149.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4759.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Grievis Vasquez
Vasquez has been playing very well for the Hornets and is coming off a 23 point, 9 assist effort to lead the Hornets over the Sixers.  Rondo needs to disrupt Vasquez with his defense as well as keep the Celtics offense moving.   It's possible that Rondo and Avery will swap on the defensive end.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4750.jpg) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4469.jpg)
Avery Bradley vs Eric Gordon
Gordon is capable of putting up a lot of points and so it will be up to Avery and Rondo to keep him from getting his shot going.  At the same time, it would be nice to see Avery's offense continue to improve.

Honorable Mention
Courtney Lee vs Austin Rivers
Lee and Rivers are old friends from Orlando.   Since Austin is coming off the bench for New Orleans the job of covering him will likely fall to Courtney Lee.  Austin has been struggling of late and it would be nice to keep him struggling just one more game.

Keys to the Game
Defense -  The Celtics have been winning with their defense and they need to continue to make defense their main focus.    As long as they play lock down Celtics' team defense, they will always have a chance to win games.

Rebound -    It takes effort to rebound and the Celtics must put forth that effort if they want to win this game.  They can't allow the Hornets to get second chance baskets.   They must be the team that wants it more if they expect to win this game and that effort and desire will show itself on the boards.

Be Aggressive -  The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to be aggressive on defense and they must be aggressive on the boards.  They have to win the 50-50 balls and they also have to take the ball to the basket and not settle for jumpers, especially if the jumpers aren't falling.

X-Factor
Home Court and Back to Back
The Celtics are at home and need to continue to use the boost from the home crowd to play their best.  The Hornets are on the road and playing in back to back games so fatigue may be a factor for them.

Can't underestimate the hornets, they've been playing really well lately. Still, we have as well. Can't slip up like we did against the Bobcats however, this is one team we need to put away early

Big team. Imposing physical size. Especially in their frontcourt.

Better defensively in halfcourt with their size/length than in transition. Celtics gotta run them hard. Not a good team when forced to make defensive rotations but pretty effective when you let them set up and attack in straight lines. Move the ball and they'll fall apart. Not a smart defensive team.

Only have a first line defense. 1-2 defensive rotations on a possession is all they can handle. Make them make 3-4 rotations and cracks will open up.

Anthony Davis has gotten caught ball-watching a fair bit when I have seen him. Still learning how to play team defense in the NBA. Has the tools but not the know-how. Robin Lopez is a solid physical presence and has good vertical size but doesn't move well. I don't think either player can keep their team defense in line if Boston move the ball and attack in transition.

Yeah Ok, I know I'm nuts but until we have no shot, I'll be hoping.

Unathletic at the PG and C positions.  Rondo and KG should live in the paint.  Bass and Sully need to keep their hands ready, because Davis will be leaving them to go for blocks all night.

Love the Bradley vs. Gordon matchup.  Bradley is tailor-made to stop EGor, as long as he stays disciplined and doesn't get in foul trouble.

Sully will be asked to guard Ryan Anderson at some point in this game.  Really interested to see how he handles it.  If I were Doc, I'd make an effort to keep Jeff Green on Anderson where possible.  He can handle his perimeter game and abuse him on the other end.

I'd love to see Jeff Green give Anthony Davis an official Welcome to the NBA poster...

Yeah Ok, I know I'm nuts but until we have no shot, I'll be hoping.

Now Ive actually looked at the schedules of both teams and think we can win 59 games and edge out Mia at 56 or 57 but in the best scenario we blow by them soon enough before they realize they better wake up. 5 games behind now.

This should be a good test for Rondo and Bradley. Hornets have a clear size advantage in this game. NOLA is better team than their record.

I worry about their size/rebounding with Lopez, Anderson, Smith, Davis, and Aminu at SF. I also worry about Vasquez. He's the kind of guy that Rondo might take lightly, but the kid can play. Still, I expect us to win comfortably. Especially since we are home, rested, and NO is on the 2nd night of a back to back and on their 3rd game in 4 days.

Brandon Bass having a great game, very active on both sides. When he plays like this, I don't mind him staying around.

If Jason can just find his game it will further strengthen this team -- he can be a weapon.

Defense looks pretty good.  Rotating and recovering from the screens pretty well.  They are running 3-4 screens per possession and are barely getting a step of separation out of it.

The mystery of Jets offense has been unexplainable.  I realize he's not a pure shooter like Ray, but he's clutch and a seasoned vet.  This slump has lasted WAY too long.  At least he's played some decent defense to make up for it.

I really think we haven't seen the offensive potential of this team.  The improvement on D has been the difference in this stretch, but I think Lee, Terry and Green all have a better and more consistent offensive game than they've shown.  Green is more speculative as I know consistency hasn't been his thing, but Lee and Terry continue to miss shots that they should make.

I don't know why Green isn't on Anderson.

Sullinger just can't keep up with Anderson's speed and can't contest him because he's not long enough.

9 players have scored, no one has scored double digits yet,

6 players have taken 3 shots.

I know it's on the players to play like the game actually matters but some of this is on Doc for not getting this team mentally in the game.  been his problem since the 2010 season.

I'm actually stunned that this isn't a game I have tickets for since this is what I endured at each game I went to in the past 3 years.

Sometimes I can't stand Rondo's idea of perimeter "defense." swiping at the ball as the man goes by you is counter-productive.

Anyway, this is as bad as the Celtics could possibly play and the game is still there if they want it. Thats a big if. Energy of the players is low, energy of the crowd is low, nothing good coming from this game.

I'm watching the game on LP and they keep showing Wyc getting out of his seat (basically on the baseline) and screaming at the ref.  You can hear him saying 1,2,3,4,5!  He's trying to show the refs that Lopez is camping out in the lane.

One thing that has been huge during our win streak was our rebounding esp on the offensive side. We needed that tonight.

I have been thoroughly impressed by Vasquez who is having a career year, and the young small forward Aminu outplaying Paul Pierce. I bet Grizzlies are kicking themselves trading Vasquez after his rookie season.

Anyone else hates Celtics offense at end of games? It consists screening for either Pierce or Garnett shooting away long jumpers. Difficult shot, after difficult shot. Why aren't they attacking the basket? Where are the post ups?

The Celtics have long suffered from a deliberate, predictable end of game offense.

They still succeed using it at times because they still have plays / players who just find ways to score even when the opponent clamps down.  But it works much less frequently than it did in '08.

no ball movement either. just ball hogging. maybe pass to a moving man who is open by the basket? wow. what a novel concept?
