Title: Quiz: name the player and year
Post by: Boris Badenov on January 15, 2013, 01:05:54 PM
Here are per-36 numbers for four seasons:

Pts      Reb    Ast      Stl     Block    Shooting
20.6   11.3   2.8      0.8      2.2         .499
19.2   11.4   3.3      0.9      2.1         .484
20.7   11.4   3.8      0.5      1.8         .504
20.5   11.5   3.2      1.0      3.3         .500

Name the player and year in each case. These are all seasons by a starter who played in almost every game, so it's not a case where the player played 10 mpg in 15 games or anything weird like that.

(I know this probably seems pretty obscure but I think the answers are pretty cool).

If it helps, all seasons are post-2000 and the answers include no Celtics player.

Third one down is Duncan, 08-09.

First one is Duncan, as well, 00-01.

Rounded out with 05-06, and finally this year.

I see your point.  That's pretty remarkable.

Ha way to random for me to think of a guys per 36 stats.

Im assuming you could find tons of players with those same stats per 36 over the last 15 years

Gonna take a shot in the dark and say those are all Duncan, but over the past 12 years, showing how ridiculously consistent his production is.  Or as Charles would say:

Yup, wow.  So consistent over the years.

You guys got it. TD at age 24, 29, 33 and 36 (so far this year).

I didn't cherry-pick these either. You can pick pretty much any 4 years and see the same thing:

Id be willing to guess KG, Shaq have better numbers (along with others I can't think of now) oh maybe JO?

Nevermind not JO.

KG and Shaqs are pretty much the same tho.

All 3 HOF some of the best players with best stats ever so not a real surprise

It is the consistency that impresses me. Both Shaq and KG decline pretty clearly by age 36. You just don't see that with Duncan.

Don't forget KG has played what 4 more seasons than Duncan. Hence whybhe is ahead of Duncan in every statistical category.

I don't know what you are looking at. KG's numbers line up pretty close to Duncans besides this year. Your basically arguing over a point or a rebound here and there literally. Looks like KG's fg% has certainly been better though

I was looking at rebounds and assists. KG was up around 12 rebounds and 5 assists at his peak, and he's been at 9-10 rebounds and 3 assists for the last few years. Those are significant drops. His steals and blocks are down too.

Your point about age vs. years in the league is a fine one, but the differences I'm talking about existed even when KG was 32 and 33, and even now the difference is not all that great in career games (1338 vs 1427). I understand that KG switched teams, but for all practical purposes Duncan is playing on a completely different team now too.

Bottom line, Duncan right now is very close to his career bests in almost every category. KG is not and hasn't been for a few years.

The only real decline I see for Duncan is in FTA. But KG has that too, even more so.

Those numbers are excellent.  Only two guys in the NBA are averaging 20+ points and 10+ rebounds per 36 minutes this year:  Tim Duncan and DeMarcus Cousins.

Duncan's biggest decline was a defensive force. His rebounding and offensive output are still great.

I've seen some DPOY talk this year though, he might have bounced back if he's finally healthy even in that last area.

Since 2000-2001, there are only 27 seasons where a player qualifying for the leaderboards on b-r.com had between 19 and 21 points and between 10 and 12 rebounds per 36 minutes.  Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett combine for 13 of those seasons.  Al Jefferson, Jermaine O'Neal, and David Lee are the other players to have multiple such seasons.

If you take it the 57 seasons in the same timeframe where a player had 19+ points and 10+ rebounds per 36 minutes with no upper bound, 19 of them are by TD/KG and another 6 by Shaq.

he's averaging more blocks per minute than he ever has in his career which is pretty cool.
