Title: BOS/MIL/MEM/PHX trade idea
Post by: saltlover on January 15, 2013, 12:31:35 PM
So I should preface by saying I’m pretty happy with the C’s roster overall, and do not think there are many obtainable players who would make the team better without costing too much in either present or future assets.  Still, if they could improve in one place, it would be to have a true, starting caliber center.  In that end, here is my absurd idea.

Boston trades:
Brandon Bass

Milwaukee trades:
Samuel Dalembert

Phoenix trades:
Jared Dudley
Marcin Gortat

Memphis trades:
Rudy Gay

Boston receives:
Marcin Gortat

Milwaukee receives:
Brandon Bass

Phoenix receives:
Rudy Gay

Memphis receives:
Jared Dudley
Samuel Dalembert

My premise states why I think this trade makes sense for Boston.  For Phoenix, they get Gay, whom they apparently want, and get rid of Gortat, whom they apparently don’t want.  Memphis gets to salary dump. They save a couple million this year, $13.5 million next year, and about $15 million the following year (Rudy Gay’s contract is terrible!) while at the same time remaining competitive.  Milwaukee can insert Bass back into the first-big-off-the-bench role that he’s well suited for, taking away Gooden’s minutes and the traded Dalembert’s.  His contract is affordable for the next two seasons.

The salaries all work out (EDIT:  Sebastian Telfair was originally included, but is not needed to make salaries work.)  Do picks need to change hands?  If so, who gives them up, and who gets them?

Works without Telfair, and makes more sense for Memphis without him, because it saves them more money this year.

Memphis would definitely need a couple draft picks though.  Certainly one would be going from Boston.  Not sure where the other one would be coming from though.

My mistake.  I forgot Phoenix can take on a higher percentage of salary than 125% + $100k.  I agree it works better without Telfair.

No way Memphis does that trade.  None at all.

I don't understand this line of thinking.  They get someone who steps into Gay's role at a quarter of the cost, offering a similar level of production (Dudley's PER is even higher than Gay's this year.)  Frankly, the team that it made least sense to me was Phoenix, because I can't figure out why they want to pay Gay almost $18 million next year and over $19 million the following year (since there's no way he isn't exercising that player's option.)

I think I'd rather have Dudley as a teammate.  He's not flashy but he is a better competitor.

Dudley and Dalembert are no where near the player Gay is.  Memphis isn't going to move Gay just to save some money.  Swap Dudley and Gay and their numbers and production are vastly different.  Gay would be a 25 ppg type scorer on that crappy Phoenix team and Dudley would barely play for Memphis.  Dalembert would be ok as a backup, but if you are a title contender (like Memphis) you don't seriously downgrade your starting unit to save a little cash and get a backup center.  Horrible trade for Memphis.  They don't even think about that trade for a second before laughing and hanging up the phone.  And frankly if they were interested in that type of trade they would just cut Milwaukee and Boston out of it and take Gortat and Dudley for Gay, which at least gets them closer in value (or they find some other team, like say LAC and get Butler, Odom, and Bledsoe with Gortat and Dudley going to LAC and Gay to Phoenix).  I think something like that then Memphis at least listens.

Memphis apparently asked for Dudley and picks from Phoenix for Gay, so clearly they're interested in Dudley, hence the entire point of this idea.  They are explicitly looking to cut a lot of salary, so Gortat, who is owed almost $8 million next year, makes a lot less sense for them than Dalembert, who is an expiring contract.

Meanwhile, Phoenix would like to get rid of Gortat's contract, especially if they're going to trade for Gay and take on that salary.  The better question might be why doesn't Milwaukee just take Gortat, and leave us out of it, but I think Bass' positional versatility has some value, which is something Gortat lacks.  Our entire frontcourt oozes 4/5 tweeners, so thus Gortat is an upgrade from Bass for us.

I do think picks need to be involved, but I don't know who's picks.

Um ... Rudy Gay is not a superstar. He has been good in the past, but this season he is playing terribly. Both Dudley and Dalembert have been better this season than Rudy Gay. Both are far more efficient, and have a history of consistency that Gay does not have.

4 out of 5 dentists who use the ESPN machine recommend trading Bass and Green to their patience who also use the machine.

Hard to see MIL trading for Bass. Logjam at the 4.

I prefer removing MIL -- Gortat to Cs, Gay & change from BOS to PHX, Dudley & Terry to MEM.

I thought about something like that at one point, but I just don't see Memphis being willing to take on Terry, or anyone else who is signed next year.  In order to sidle into a Memphis-Phoenix deal, we need to find someone who is interested in one of our players and has an expiring contract that isn't too big.  There aren't too many of those players/teams out there.  Luke Walton, but the Cavs would want a pick for helping out.  Beno Udrih, but he's already on the Bucks, so Dalembert makes more sense.  JJ Redick, but see Luke Walton.  Maybe the Bobcats would work with Diop, if they were actually interested in Bass/Green/Lee (don't see Terry fitting for them.)  The Hawks don't make much sense with Korver as the expiring option (and besides, if we they're willing to take one of our contracts, I'd be unhappy if we didn't come away with Josh Smith.)

Accordingly I'm sticking with the Bucks.  They're fighting for a playoff spot, and perhaps they think Bass would actually be an upgrade to their team.  There's at least an argument to be made for this, even if not an air-tight one.  If so, they're the most logical choice.  If not, then I think there's no way, since it wouldn't make sense to pay the cost to another team for helping out in addition to sending additional picks to Memphis.

Memphis doesn't want to dump Gay for expiring contracts. Dudley and Terry (or a like contracted player) allow them to get under the tax threshold while getting talent back and staying in the hunt this year.
